Retirement is no longer viewed as a single event marking the end of one's career, but rather as a chapter with multiple phases and possibilities. This shift has led advisors to rethink their approach to retirement planning, with a focus on balancing financial strategies, healthcare needs, and lifestyle choices. In this episode, Jack Sharry talks with Ken Dychtwald, Founder and CEO of Age Wave. For 45+ years, Ken has been a leading visionary and original thinker regarding the lifestyle, marketing, health care, economic, and workforce implications of the age wave. Ken is a psychologist, gerontologist, and best-selling author of 19 books on aging-related issues. Jack and Ken discuss the changes brought about by increased longevity and the aging population in the financial services industry. From financial readiness to the evolving role of financial advisors, Ken explores what it means to live longer, healthier, and more purpose-driven lives. In this episode: [01:26] - Meet Ken Dychtwald [02:29] - Why people are rethinking their retirement plans [07:00] - How longevity has redefined retirement  [11:15] - The importance of mentors and mentorship [14:19] - The changing role of financial advisors  [19:04] - The need for advisors to be more holistic [21:56] - A shift from accumulation to decumulation strategies [25:29] - Ken's key takeaways [28;43] - Ken's interests outside of work Quotes [07:43] - "Aging isn't what it used to be. More and more people today are realizing that they don't want to live a longer life just to be old longer. They want a more cyclic life. People increasingly refer to this new chapter of their lives as a time of freedom, not a time to decline." ~ Ken Dychtwald [20:45] - "This age wave and this longevity revolution don't just mean that there'll be more older adults, but a new generation of older adults. These boomers are really demanding and want to be listened to and asked questions." ~ Ken Dychtwald [25:04] - "The entire population needs to be better oriented towards the financial considerations of 'How do I live long, how do I live well, and how do I make sure my wealth span matches my lifespan?'” ~ Ken Dychtwald  Links  Ken Dychtwald on LinkedIn Age Wave Chip Conley John Thiel Edward Jones The John A. Most people have a vague idea of what it takes to stay healthy as we age—some combination of cutting out the delicious, irresponsible activities while adding in more nutritious, boring ones. While it never seemed overly complicated, it also didn't sound very fun. Today's guest flipped that script. According to Maddy Dychtwald, a healthy mindset can lower stress, which can actually make it easier and more enjoyable to exercise and socialize. In other words, you don't have to white knuckle the tedious tasks. You might even look forward to them! For nearly 40 years, Maddy has been exploring all aspects of the Age Wave, and she's contributed to researching how an aging population can have profound business, social, healthcare, financial, workforce, and cultural implications. She's a national best-selling author, including her latest, Ageless Aging, an acclaimed public speaker, and an overall thought leader on longevity, aging, and the new retirement. Her insights and research have been featured in Bloomberg Businessweek, Forbes, Newsweek, Time, Fox Business News, CNBC, and NPR. For years, a common belief was that genetics predetermined much of our destiny, but Maddy says that may not be true. New research suggests that up to 90% of our health and well-being is related to our lifestyle and environment. I grilled her on the questions people want answers to. Are trends like intermittent fasting dubious, or can they help? Is walking 30 minutes per day enough, or do you need to add strength training? What's the latest you should eat before bedtime? Can adopting a pet add purpose to your life? Are men or women more likely to suffer from Alzheimer's? Maddy's answers and wisdom shed so much light on what people can do to stack their heart and brain health to increase both the span and quality of life in later years. We all want to live longer, better lives. Maddy might be able to help us enjoy the process along the way. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Maggie shares her key ingredients to living better longer and her “holistic recipe” for aging well based on interviews with 100 different physicians, researchers and academicians and insights from the Age Wave think tank. About Maddy Recognized by Forbes as one of the top fifty female futurists globally, for nearly 40 years, Maddy Dychtwald has been deeply involved in exploring all aspects of the age wave and how it's fundamentally transforming our lives and the world at-large. This has led her to become a national bestselling author, acclaimed public speaker, and thought leader on longevity and aging, health, wellness, and the new retirement. The Age Wave team has worked with more than half of the Fortune 500 in industries ranging from healthcare and medical technology to financial services and consumer products. Key Takeaways Most research and clinical health trials are done on men. In 2016, the FDA requested pharmaceutical companies include women in clinical trials. Women live, on average, six years longer than men, but often not in good health. On average, women spend the last 12 to 14 years in a cascade of poor health. Genetics are not destiny—90% of our health and well-being is within our control, having to do with our lifestyle and environment. Women are twice as likely as men to get Alzheimer's disease. Exercise positively impacts your brain health—it can increase the size of your hippocampus, which is where we store memories, Not having your financial house in order increases cortisol levels. High levels of cortisol levels negatively impact your heart and increase the chances of getting a stroke. Your attitude towards aging has an impact on how long you live and how well you live. If you think more positively about your own aging, you generally have significantly more gray matter in your brain compared to those who don't. Long term studies show positive perceptions of aging add 7 ½ years to your life.

They discuss the importance of hormone replacement therapy for brain health, the impact of an anti-inflammatory diet on metabolic health, and the significance of exercise for maintaining muscle mass and balance. Maddy also delves into skincare and hair health tips, emphasising the benefits of vitamin C and Retin-A products. KEY TAKEAWAYS Eating an anti-inflammatory diet, staying hydrated, and avoiding added sugars and alcohol can improve skin and overall health. Incorporating strength training exercises and balance tests like the Flamingo Test can help prevent falls and maintain physical health as one ages. Focus on getting quality sleep rather than just quantity, ensuring you wake up feeling refreshed. Practices like sun exposure in the morning can aid in regulating circadian rhythms. Consider bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, especially for women experiencing hormonal imbalances during menopause, to support brain health and overall well-being. CoQ10 can be beneficial for muscle strength and counteracting side effects of certain medications like statins, providing a natural alternative to address health concerns. BEST MOMENTS "I've been on this beat of longevity and aging and retirement for, Gosh, close to 40 years. So you do the math, you can figure it out. I'm 74 years old." "I'm looking at you and I actually can't believe that you just said you're 74 years old because you look so young." "I think knowledge is power. Having that information is really powerful." "I find that if I don't drink a lot of water one day or if I've had a little wine, I see it in my skin." He emphasizes the importance of men openly discussing prostate health issues, as many of his friends had experienced similar diagnoses. When presented with treatment options, Dr. Dychtwald was intrigued by the potential of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), a minimally invasive procedure he had previously advocated for in his work. Under the care of Dr. Shinohara at UCSF, Dr. Dychtwald underwent HIFU treatment, which precisely targets cancerous tissue while preserving surrounding healthy tissue. The procedure itself was swift, lasting less than 15 minutes, and Dr. Dychtwald was able to return to work the same day. He expresses his gratitude for the availability of this advanced technology and encourages others to inquire about focused ultrasound as a potential treatment option. Both Dr. Dychtwald and Dr. Shinohara express optimism about the advancements in medical technology and the potential for focused ultrasound to revolutionize the treatment of various cancers and other conditions, ultimately contributing to improved quality of life and longevity. When Betty White died in 2021, we were somehow surprised. Even at 99-years-old, it felt like she was gone too soon. Smokey Robinson just released a new album at 83 years of age. Martha Stewart posed in a bathing suit on the cover of Sports Illustrated at 81.   How we think about aging is much different than it used to be, and Ken Dychtwald is one of the foremost authorities on these changing perceptions. For more than 45 years, he's been an original thinker on the lifestyle, marketing, health care, economic, and workforce implications of the age wave.   In today's episode, he tells us that older adults no longer have to put up with being called “golden agers” because they're too busy leading vibrant, productive lives beyond traditional retirement. As shown by the growing unretirement trend across the country, happy retirees don't necessarily stop working. They just start saying “no” to the things they never liked in the first place.   With a mindset of 'usefulness' over 'youthfulness,' Ken Dychtwald encourages older individuals to balance work and personal pursuits. He wants them to focus on the significance of life's moments and connections and reimagine retirement as a dynamic stage of life.   Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A psychologist and gerontologist, Dychtwald is a best-selling author of 16 books on aging-related issues, including Radical Curiosity. With more than two million people worldwide having heard his speeches to corporates, associations, social services, and government groups, let's take a closer look at who Ken Dychtwald is and why he is so influential today. Ken Dychtwald's Impact on Businesses Dychtwald's work centers around understanding how businesses can capture the attention of mature consumers as they age. He provides advice on how businesses can use this knowledge to create products that better serve mature consumers' needs while increasing their own profits. According to Dychtwald's research, older adults are some of the most affluent consumers in the market today – making them prime targets for any business looking to increase its customer base. His approach has been adopted by many companies looking to expand their product lines into age-specific markets as well as attract more customers from different generations. Dychtwald's Impact on Health Care In addition to his work in business, Dychtwald has also had a significant impact on health care systems across North America. He has argued that our current health care system does not adequately address the needs of older adults – particularly those living with chronic conditions or disabilities – because it fails to recognize their unique circumstances and challenges faced by caregivers. As such, he advocates for changes in policy that would better equip health care providers with strategies for addressing these needs more effectively. Additionally, he works with governments around the world on programs designed specifically for older adults—such as enhanced home-based medical services or improved access to quality nutrition programs—in order to improve their overall quality of life and well-being. Conclusion: In short, Ken Dychtwald has become one of the leading voices when it comes to understanding how aging impacts businesses and society at large. Through his work at Age Wave, he continues to provide valuable insights into how companies can better target older consumers while also advocating for policies that will improve the elderly's quality of life through better access to healthcare services when needed.
