Twelve years later she imitated Saint Teresa by becoming a Carmelite, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Born into a prominent Jewish family in Breslau, Germany—now Wroclaw, Poland—Edith abandoned Judaism in her teens. As a student at the University of Göttingen, she became fascinated by phenomenology–an approach to philosophy. Excelling as a protégé of Edmund Husserl, one of the leading phenomenologists, Edith earned a doctorate in philosophy in 1916. She continued as a university teacher until 1922, when she moved to a Dominican school in Speyer; her appointment as lecturer at the Educational Institute of Munich ended under pressure from the Nazis. After living for four years in the Cologne Carmel, Sister Teresa Benedicta moved to the Carmelite monastery in Echt, Netherlands, in 1938. The Nazis occupied that country in 1940. In retaliation for being denounced by the Dutch bishops, the Nazis arrested all Dutch Jews who had become Christians. Early childhood centres are stretched as they deal with more children with learning and behavioural challenges.   The Educational Institute says the increase has meant waiting lists for specialist support are far too long.   It's thought there could be a connection between the issue and children experiencing Covid lockdowns early in life.   Speech and language therapist Conor Fraser told Mike Hosking that the services have been stretched for a long time.   She says this year, there's been a 20% vacancy in special education roles.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Covid lockdowns may have played a part in the increase in learning and behavioural issues being picked up at early childhood education.   The Educational Institute says the increase has meant waiting lists for specialist support are far too long.   Clinical psychologist Dougal Sutherland told Tim Dower that the main thing kids that age do is play and interact with other kids, which provides social and cognitive development and learning.   He says that while teenagers could jump online to socialise with their friends, that play and interaction can't be replaced, so young kids missed out during isolation.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Labour is being warned not to start telling teachers how to do their job. If elected the party plans to direct teachers how to teach reading, writing and maths from 2026. The Educational Institute and the Primary Principals Federation says teachers would back the model though the institute warned it would not work if it was too detailed and prescriptive. Certainty there is a case for investigating whether sexism is lowering teacher's pay. The Ministry of Education is looking into whether teachers are paid badly because of gender, a claim made by the Post Primary Teachers' Association and the Educational Institute. The majority of teachers are women with a base pay scale ranging from $51,000- $90,000 annually. New Zealand Work Research Institute associate director Katherine Ravenswood says decades of research has shown female-dominated occupations are paid less. "Partly because of how we view women's work, but also because of gender discrimination where we just pay women less." LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Born in Breslau, Germany, murdered in the Nazi death camp of Auschwitz, Poland, Edith Stein dedicated her life to a pursuit of truth leading from her roots in Judaism, via adolescent agnosticism to the study of philosophy, to Catholicism and ultimately to life as a Carmelite. She served God with prayer, scholarship and dedication to her fellow human beings, created in God's image. In 1933, while others kept silent, she sought help from the Vatican for her beleaguered Jewish community, an Esther who pleaded for her people. In her writings she probed the meaning of suffering and reached for closeness to God. She endured the indignities inflicted by her Nazi persecutors sustained by prayer and caring for the children around her. With her older sister Rosa, she died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz. Edith Stein was beatified and declared a saint by Pope John Paul II.” Text by Susanne M. Batzdorff  (Poet and Writer; niece of Edith Stein) “Those who join the Carmelite Order are not lost to their near and dear ones, but have been won for them, because it is our vocation to intercede to God for everyone….I keep thinking of Queen Esther who was taken away from her people precisely because God wanted her to plead with the king on behalf of her nation. I am a very poor and powerless little Esther, but the King who has chosen me is infinitely great and merciful. This is great comfort.” (Edith Stein on Carmelite vocation, 1938). After being transferred to Dutch Carmelite convent from Cologne because of severe persecusion of Jews in Nazi Germany, she wrote in her will these words:  “Even now I accept the death that God has prepared for me in complete submission and with joy as being his most holy will for me. I ask the Lord to accept my life and my death … so that the Lord will be accepted by His people and that His Kingdom may come in glory, for the salvation of Germany and the peace of the world.”“ A brilliant philosopher who stopped believing in God when she was 14, Edith Stein was so captivated by reading the autobiography of Teresa of Avila that she began a spiritual journey that led to her Baptism in 1922. Twelve years later she imitated Teresa by becoming a Carmelite, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Born into a prominent Jewish family in Wroclaw (Poland), Edith abandoned Judaism in her teens. As a student at the University of Göttingen, she became fascinated by phenomenology, an approach to philosophy. Excelling as a protégé of Edmund Husserl, one of the leading phenomenologists, Edith earned a doctorate in philosophy in 1916. She continued as a university teacher until 1922 when she moved to a Dominican school in Speyer; her appointment as lecturer at the Educational Institute of Munich ended under pressure from the Nazis. After living in the Cologne Carmel (1934-38), she was moved to the Carmelite monastery in Echt, Netherlands.  In Echt, Edith Stein completed her study of “The Church's Teacher of Mysticism and the Father of the Carmelites, John of the Cross, on the Occasion of the 400th Anniversary of His Birth, 1542-1942.” In 1941 she wrote to a friend, who was also a member of her order: “One can only gain a scientia crucis (knowledge of the cross) if one has thoroughly experienced the cross. I have been convinced of this from the first moment onwards and have said with all my heart: ‘Ave, Crux, Spes unica' (I welcome you, Cross, our only hope).” Her study on St. John of the Cross is entitled: “Kreuzeswissenschaft” (The Science of the Cross). In retaliation for being denounced by the Dutch bishops, the Nazis arrested all Dutch Jews who had become Christians. Teresa Benedicta was arrested by the Gestapo on 2 August 1942, while she was praying in the convent's chapel with the other sisters. She was to report within five minutes, together with her sister Rosa, who had also converted and was serving at the Echt Convent. Her last words to be heard in Echt were addressed to Rosa: “Come, we are going for our people.”

Conductor Bruno Walter said that the first Edinburgh International Festival was a ‘magnificent’ experience, which ‘renewed human relations’ after the war. But not everyone felt included. For some years Glasgow Unity Theatre – led by a former factory shop steward – had been discovering working-class talent and presenting popular, professional theatre. International Festival director Rudolf Bing thought Scottish work unlikely to meet his standards; and making the Festival accessible to a wide social range of ‘local visitors’ was not a consideration. Glasgow Unity came anyway but had to perform, self- funded, on what later became ‘the Fringe’. This two-part event examines the origin of the ‘culture wars’, an under-appreciated part of the development of Edinburgh as a Festival City. Supported by Edinburgh Trades Union Council and Scottish Trade Unions. Part one: Through a combination of docu-drama and readings based on contemporary sources, we look at how the first Festival came about in 1947. This is a true story, sourced from contemporary – albeit incomplete – records, performed by Helen Mackay and Kevin Lennon, and narrated by Terry Brotherstone. Part two: https://soundcloud.com/artsbritishcouncil/contestingthespirit2 A panel including Larry Flanagan (General Secretary, Educational Institute of Scotland) and Joyce McMillan (theatre critic, National Union of Journalists), address what has changed since 1947, particularly with regard to the role that the International Festival has played, is playing, and should play, in enhancing the life-long educational experience of Scotland’s people. Chaired by International Festival Director Fergus Linehan.
