See the full video here:https://youtu.be/131ZABgskxcHow often do we hear, "Who am I to judge?" in response to LGBTQ topics in a Latter-day Saint context? Sometimes, that's a perfectly reasonable response. But more often, we use that line to justify our fear of addressing the topic altogether. In this new series, I want to explore the state of the LGBTQ conversation within Latter-day Saint circles. What do we say that unnecessarily alienates people? What might we say that inadvertently undermines important, eternal truths? What are the negative consequences of not saying anything? In this first video, I explore 3 rationales for maintaining a morally apathetic approach to the question of LGBTQ relationships and identities. If you'd like to support the channel, consider subscribing. I post the transcripts and other related content on my Substack:https://skylersorensen.substack.com/All our links:https://linktr.ee/SitdownwithskyOn this podcast, we are faith-affirming first. Throughout Mormonism's history there have been a series of "rescues" where grassroots members, teamed with local church authorities, band together to rescue Saints in despair.  Are we seeing an LGBTQ+ rescue in Mormonism? We're digging in...and talking about it.  Inspired by Elder M. Russell Ballard's charge to "better understand the LGBTQ community," Ben Schilaty and Charlie Bird, gay Latter-day Saints, have been training ward and stake leaders/members on LGBTQ inclusion and love. Through these efforts, Ben and Charlie aim to change the tradition and culture surrounding queer experiences in Mormonism and creating a space of better understanding regarding sexuality in the church (not much is being said about gender identity).  In this special episode hosted by Latter Gay Stories and Mormon Stories, a panel of queer voices, moderated by John Dehlin, tackles this topic by analyzing a recently recorded fireside in a Surrey British Columbia Stake. Is this new method of training effective? Does it move the needle? #LatterGayStories #BenSchilaty #CharlieBird #GayMormonRescue #LGBTQMormonism

Some questions that will be addressed by the panel include: What aspects of this training are groundbreaking and should be celebrated? How do efforts like this one help LGBTQ youth in the LDS pews? Is this a local/grass-roots effort or is it sanctioned by top LDS Church leadership? Does this training represent a "Gay Mormon Rescue" of sorts, reminiscent of the Swedish Rescue and Boise Rescue from previous years (see here and here)? What possible risks do trainings like this introduce for LGTBQ youth and young adults? To what extent do less-official, "grass roots" efforts like this prevent top Mormon church leaders from taking responsibility for the LGBTQ crisis (past and present) within Mormonism? Carol Lynn Pearson is a Mormon icon. In the early 1960's two monumental experiences happened in her life: she married Gerald, a gay man—and she published her first book. From that first publishing—and her relationship with her gay husband—Carol Lynn Pearson forged a path forward for Latter-day Saints to better understand the LGBTQ experience. Her life has been a lesson of love, compassion, understanding and advocacy. Escaping the gazing eyes of Utah Mormons, the Pearson's left Salt Lake City and settled in California to allow their little family the opportunity to embrace the unknown and to grow in uncertainty. Through her best-selling book, “Goodbye, I Love You”, Carol Lynn allowed the world too peer into the Pearson family story. For the first time a well known Latter-day Saint family was openly talking about homosexuality, mixed orientation marriage, kindness, advocacy, harmful doctrine and more. In this episode Carol Lynn sits down with Kyle to dive deeper into that journey, discuss the impact it had on Mormonism, and how marrying a gay man changed her life. #LatterGayStories #CarolLynnPearson #Family #Love #ChurchOfJesusChristofLatterDaySaints

Weston Smith came out as gay while his dad was serving as a bishop in the Mormon church. His parents were understanding, but navigating life a gay Mormon teen, trying to better understand your sexuality, and remain the “best” Mormon possible is often a recipe for disaster. Weston was no stranger to the turmoil that often comes from being gay and Mormon—a situation, for Wes, that led to serious suicidal ideation. He ultimately decided to serve a mission as an “out” gay Mormon, but even in the mission field the suicidal thoughts persisted. It was there, on his mission, that he resolved to leave the church and live an authentic, happy life. After leaving his mission early and finding complete familial support, Weston has thrived. He recently published a memoir titled, ”This Body of Water”, detailing his journey and what the future looks like for him. A copy of Weston's book is available at WestonSmithBooks.com. Parallel to the LDS Church's shifting position regarding homosexuality, there have been new crops of faithful gay public figures who are held up by the church as role models on how to be a faithful gay member of the church. As the LDS Church has softened its stances and opened the window for “righteous celibacy,” gay public figures in mixed-orientation marriages have lost popularity and a more nuanced breed of celibate role models has emerged E.g. Charlie Bird and Ben Schilatty. In this episode we discuss how these public figures enable the perpetuation of harmful church rhetoric and spiritual trauma towards the LGBTQ community, and explore some possible solutions that could help ignite positive change in the church. ————— We are 100% donor funded! Happy Utah Pride Week everyone! To celebrate Utah Pride week, I am sharing one of the most important interviews in the history of Mormon Stories Podcast. It is the story of Kyle Ashworth – a dear, brilliant, talented friend, and the host of Latter Gay Stories podcast. This interview is important for at least 3 reasons: Kyle is a truly brilliant, caring human. That should be enough. It conveys super powerfully the myriad of ways in which the Mormon Church harms its LGBTQ members AND its straight members – including a deep dive into the serious problems of mixed-orientation marriages within Mormonism, along with the deep ineffectiveness and deceptiveness of organizations like North Star International. Finally, It is ultimately a story of “love winning out” as Kyle, his ex-wife, and her family fulfill their mantra, “One Family, Two homes.” Today we will show Part 1 of the interview, and tomorrow we will share Part 2. Please watch and enjoy, and please spread the word!!!

Tom Christofferson’s journey through life has been anything but ordinary. On the surface, itbegan as a typical Mormon story. He grew up in a close gospel-centered LDS family and wenton to serve a faithful mission. But during these years, he was also trying to deal with aninconvenient truth: He was gay.Although his life and family had been firmly rooted in the church (his older brother Todd waseventually called as an LDS apostle), Tom came to a point at which he could no longer envisiona place for himself in the church, and he left. He went on to become an accomplishedbusinessman on the east coast and created a good life with his partner of nearly twenty years.Later in life, however, Tom felt strongly called to return to his LDS faith and community. His new book “That We May Be One: A Gay Mormon’s Perspective on Faith & Family” (Deseret Book) includes his story of making a spiritual home in a faith that often may not feel like home to its gay members.Tom Christofferson sat down with Terryl Givens in the studios of Faith Matters Foundation(faithmatters.org) for this extraordinary, personal conversation.Links:That We May Be One: A Gay Mormon’s Perspective on Faith and Family

Tyler Glenn is best known as the lead singer of the multi-platinum alternative pop band Neon Trees.   Tyler was raised LDS/Mormon in Temecula, California.  After discovering a love for music in high school and serving an LDS mission, Tyler moved to Provo, UT with his buddy Chris to form Neon Trees (named after the trees on the In and Out signs).  Neon Trees signed with Mercury Records in 2009 and went on to release three successful alternative pop albums: Habits (2010), Picture Show (2012), and Pop Psychology (2014). Tyler knew he was gay as a child, but struggled as a teen and adult to reconcile his sexuality with his LDS faith.  These struggles took Tyler to some sad/dark places, which were only exacerbated by his fame as a pop star.  At age 27 (around the release of Picture Show), Tyler seriously contemplated ending his life. In spite of these struggles, Tyler remained a full and literal believer in the LDS Church.  In 2014 Tyler decided that being a closeted gay man was contributing to his suicidality.  Consequently he came out as gay to his family, band, friends -- and to the world in Rolling Stone magazine -- prior to the release of Pop Psychology.  From this point forward it was Tyler's full intent to find and marry a gay man, and to raise children in the LDS church as a gay married Mormon.   Then, in November of 2015, the LDS church released its new policy branding same-sex married Mormons as immediate apostates, and prohibiting children of same-sex married couples from being baptized.  This policy change sent Tyler into a tailspin, ultimately shattering his plans as a believing, gay Mormon.  In this three part interview, we explore: Part 1: Tyler's early years as a young Mormon struggling with his sexuality. Part 2: Tyler's ascent (along with Neon Trees) into stardom...and the sadness/despair that followed. Part 3: Tyler's faith crisis instigated by the LDS policy change, along with his current beliefs/views regarding the LDS Church.

“We are not looking to change church policy. What we want is to create an atmosphere in the church where gay people no longer feel that they would be better off dead.” Bryce Cook, by his own admission, used to be homophobic.  He was brought up in a conservative LDS family in Mesa, Arizona, and fully embraced traditional church policy. And then he and his wife Sara received an email that changed their life.   Their son, at the time in school at BYU, wrote to tell them that he was a gay Mormon.  “That was a huge surprise, we had no idea that could happen,” Cook says.  Later, another admission.  A second son came out of the closet.   The Cooks were shocked that two of their six children were gay, but they say, “all came under the microscope of greater understanding.” It has been a ten year journey for this family.  Not only have they worked to seek understanding, but also advocate for grassroots change in The Church of Latter-day Saints. “I am here today to be an advocate and a voice for those who don't have a voice in our church,” Cook says.   Sara and Bryce Cook started an organization called ALL, which stands for Arizona LDS LGBT http://allarizona.org/ It is a fast growing support and social group for LDS members who are LGBT, as well as family members and allies who want to support them.  They meet monthly and interact on a Facebook forum.   In recent months, the group has gained some high profile support as well. At the upcoming All Are Alike Unto God conference in April of 2016, the keynote speaker and special guest will be former NFL Quarterback Steve Young, a well known member of the LDS Church.  Cook says Young and his wife have embraced ALL's efforts to open dialogue and increase tolerance.   The Cooks say the greater goal is not to change church policy.  Rather to spread the message that there shouldn't have to be a choice between your faith in God and love for the church, and your love for your child.
