What does it take to lead, particularly, lead a school? Josh Tovar has some ideas. On this episode, Josh talks about what it takes to be a leader of a school, how leading by example and focusing on what's best for kids (not always what's easiest for adults) can have a tremendous impact on a school. Listen here! . . . Josh Tovar is the proud son of Virginia and Jesus Tovar who immigrated from Cd. Juarez Chihuahua, Mexico in the late 70's. Raised in El Paso, Texas, he faced adversity as an emergent bilingual student who graduated at the bottom of his high school class. He knew he needed to change his life, so he enlisted in the United States Marines.  After attending artillery school, he began attending UTEP, where he earned a BA in History and Minor in Education. He has been in the education system from pre-k to the university level.  He was in the classroom for ten years and the last twenty-two years has been an administrator.  He assisted in graduating all students who passed the state exam in 2008, turned around a medical magnet program and assisted in transforming a school of 2550 students from a D- to B- in three years. He currently is the proud principal of Memorial Pathway Academy in Garland ISD which supports EB students and those who might fall through the cracks in a comprehensive high school. He is the proud father of Cashew, Aaron and Matthew.  He has been supported and married to Berernice. Finally, he knows that kids do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.  Connect with Josh X: @MPA_GOJAGUARS X: @JTSPOTLIGHTS . . . In part one of this series, I discuss the idea that nothing changes if no one changes. Before changing policies about grading, discipline, testing, and more, we must change our mindsets about how education should look. We must change our habits to become better for our students, and sometimes we need to tell ourselves to shut up and teach. On this episode of the Shut Up And Teach Podcast, I spoke with Larry Carey. Larry has a background in teaching Pre-School and early childhood development. He shared how he developed a passion for literacy. Larry's book, Alliteration Boosts Communication: The ABCs of Vocabulary, is highly differentiated and a lot of fun while exposing students to literacy components including letter/sound correspondence and vocabulary. He is also a PBIS Coordinator, and he shared some wisdom and insights into how PBIS can be implemented effectively. . . . Mr. Larry Carey is an educational consultant and owner of Larry Carey LTD. He is also in his first year as a Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports Coordinator in Columbus City Schools. Prior to this role, he was acting as a teacher on special assignment for the NEA Organizing Fellowship Academy. This exclusive fellowship selected only twelve educators across the country to learn the role of organizing and how to engage, assist, and support educators throughout the United States. Mr. Carey's journey began as a student in the Columbus City Schools, where he attended Indianola Elementary, Johnson Park Middle, and graduated from Eastmoor Academy in 2003. Upon receiving his bachelor's degree in Communication, it only took him a few years to realize that he was not walking in his purpose. In 2014, after working as a Pre-Kindergarten instructional assistant and library aide, Mr. Carey enrolled back in college to obtain his teaching license to pursue his goal as an Early Childhood Educator. During the pandemic, Mr. Carey, an admitted perfectionist, began trying to find other ways to make sure his scholars were learning. He created a YouTube channel for those students who may not have had access to a computer but had access to a tablet or phone. He also began completing the final touches to his book Alliteration Boosts Communication: The ABCs of Vocabulary. After publishing his book, Mr. Carey created companion activities that align to the National Standards for fellow educators that range from Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade. A vast number of the activities focus on letter recognition, sounds, colors, identifying what is occurring in the illustrations, and of course, vocabulary! For the higher grade levels, vocabulary and creating their own alliteration is key to mastery. These activities along with the book can be found on his website www.larrycareyltd.com. We dive into how he views school culture and how he transforms the teaching norms into what young kids would understand.Elijah emphasizes how much better learning could be by using language or games or pop culture references that kids would understand. And by telling captivating stories and incorporating the subject matter within it as moral lessons, the students are kept engaged and wanting for more. As his book says, school becomes “A Place They Love.”We also talked about the ways of keeping the school fun, engaging, and safe, and we challenged the notion that learning can either be fun or rigorous and hard. Elijah dials in on the truth that when things get more fun, learning becomes even more rigorous, except it becomes less hard and more engaging for the students. Elijah's stories will encourage you to be bolder, more creative, and more engaged with your students more than ever. Ready to transform your classroom into a place that the students will love? Tune in to this episode filled with inspiring stories and valuable takeaways!Stay empowered,JenLet's keep the conversation going! S3 Summer Conversation Series E03 with Gabbi Buckley and Elijah Carbajal We are back again this summer with our Summer Conversation Series! Our goal is to hit up as many educators as we can and share their response to a single summer question. Last year we asked all our guests a question about an external goal for education. “What's one thing you want to change about education?” This year though we are going with a more internal and reflective question. “What is one thing you want to change about yourself to be a better educator, leader, or colleague?” On this episode, Josh sits down with Gabbi Buckley, a high school principal who is about to start her fourth year as the principal of Dobson High School in Mesa, AZ and Mike sits down with Elijah Carbajal a reading interventionist from New Mexico to chat and get their answers for the summer conversation series question Intro/Outro music - "No Pool Party Tonight” by Huntingtons Transition Song - "Anesthesia" by Bad Religion Find Gabbi at: www.twitter.com/principal_gabbi www.instagram.com/gabbibuckley www.instagram.com/dobson_mustangs Find Elijah at: www.twitter.com/carbaeli www.instagram.com/carbaeli Search for the Shut Up and Teach Podcast on your favorite podcast app! In Episode 65 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about their experience with bringing the Curriculum documents, or standards, into our classroom spaces. We often utilize the curriculum documents to plan our learning as teachers, but rarely ever include them as a part of the teaching and activities to help students learn. Chey and Pav talk about ways that they have employed the documents in their classes, or how they plan to in the future. A great conversation, and a fantastic opportunity to jump off with new ideas to try in the classroom! Chey and Pav talk to Elijah Carbajal, Grade 4 teacher from Albuquerque, New Mexico, for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. On this very special episode. I had a one on one with my good friend and former co-worker Elijah Carbajal. He is a teacher for Aztec Municipal Schools in Aztec,NM. The recent events in our country inspired us to have a raw, uncut and unfiltered conversation on race, class, privilege, resources on self education of systemic racism and the big question of how do we move forward as a nation. So for this episode only the show will be referred to as Beyond The Cover. Listen with a clear heart and mind.

The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education

In this episode, I chat with Elijah Carbajal, an innovative educator who believes in challenging the norms by creative authentic learning environments by immersing his students in the content. Imagine finding gold doubloons and secret messages from Blackbeard and the excitement of his actual arrival. This is just a taste of how this educator is helping to change the narrative for education. Elijah is an educator and blogger currently living and working in Aztec, NM. His activism includes mental health and suicide awareness, as well as advocacy for student equity, safety, and positive student relationships. In his spare time, Elijah loves to create music, exercise, and watch The Office while hanging out with his cat, Nala. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thecounternarrative/support
