In this crucial episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosted by Ashlie Walton, we dive into the heart of trust within relationships, especially focusing on the unique challenges faced by first responders. Trust is the foundation of any strong relationship, but how do we rebuild that trust after it's been shaken or broken? This episode provides practical advice, examples, and exercises designed to help first responders and their partners learn how to trust again after betrayal and strengthen their bonds. Understanding Trust Issues: A first responder might develop trust issues due to the high-stress nature of their job, leading to emotional detachment at home as a defense mechanism against the trauma experienced on duty. Healing After Betrayal: A practical step is initiating open communication sessions where both partners express their feelings without judgment, fostering a supportive environment for healing. Exercises to Build Trust: Setting aside time for activities that require teamwork, like a cooking class, can help rebuild trust through cooperation and shared success. Balancing Duty and Relationships: Implementing a 'no-interruptions' policy during family meals or designated couple time can ensure that both partners feel valued despite the demands of a first responder's schedule. Strengthening Emotional Connections: Encouraging participation in couple's therapy or resilience training workshops offered by mental health professionals can enhance emotional understanding and trust. Practical Examples: Scheduled Check-ins: Implementing regular, open conversations about feelings, fears, and aspirations to rebuild mutual understanding. Shared Experiences: Engaging in new, trust-building activities together to create positive memories and strengthen bonds. Trust is a journey, especially in the high-stakes world of first responders. Subscribe to the Tactical Living Podcast for more insights into building stronger, healthier relationships through understanding, resilience, and empathy. In this insightful episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosted by Ashlie Walton, we delve deep into the dynamics of unilateral decision-making within first responder marriages. Balancing the demands of a first responder life with the intricacies of personal relationships presents unique challenges, including the propensity for one partner to make decisions independently. Unilateral decision-making refers to situations where one person in a relationship or group makes a decision without consulting or gaining agreement from the others. Here are five examples: Financial Expenditures: Making significant purchases or investments without discussing it with a partner. Relocation Decisions: Deciding to move to a new city or country without considering the partner's opinion or the impact on the family. Career Changes: Accepting a new job or making a career shift without the input or support of a partner, especially when it affects the relationship or family dynamics. Healthcare Choices: Making important health or medical decisions independently when it should be a joint discussion, especially in matters affecting shared responsibilities or family health. Parenting Decisions: Making critical decisions about children's education, discipline, or activities without consulting the other parent, undermining co-parenting efforts. In relationships, especially in first responder marriages where stress and unpredictable schedules are common, communication and joint decision-making are key to maintaining trust and mutual respect. We explore the impact of such decision-making on relationships, offering practical police tips and relationship advice to foster mutual understanding and empathy in uniform. Our discussion extends to strategies for balancing relationships and career, underlining the importance of peer support and mental health for first responders. This story is about a high school teacher's extraordinary efforts to support her students and her belief that relationships must come first. It's about a parent who takes the time to acknowledge this teacher's commitment to her son. And it's a story about mental heath and the struggles so many young people face today – struggles that affect their schoolwork, their relationships with friends and family, and the quality of their own lives. In the 10 years leading up to the pandemic, feelings of persistent sadness and hopelessness—as well as suicidal thoughts and behaviors—increased by about 40% among young people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. The pandemic, of course, only made thing worse. During the pandemic, 29% of U.S. high school students had a parent or caregiver who lost their job, 55% were emotionally abused by a parent or caregiver, and 11% were physically abused, according to the CDC. Numerous other factors like online shaming and bullying have also contributed to the crisis. The good news is that there are steps schools can take to help address the problem. One, they can increase the number of professionals who are trained to recognize and treat students suffering from mental health issues. Too many schools across the country have virtually none of these professionals. Another step is for schools to incorporate social and emotional learning programs at all levels of the system – the kind of programs that can dramatically reduce bullying for instance. Unfortunately widespread efforts to promote these programs have been thwarted because social emotional learning programs have become a new target in the culture wars in education. But if parents are able to cut through the noise they will see the true, sometimes life-saving, benefits of these programs for their children.

Whether we are talking business, or life in general, putting genuine and real connections with people as a top priority above all else is the key to success. That doesn't mean being a people pleaser and always saying “yes”, but it means operating out of a mentality of always being ethical and expressing gratitude for the people in your life. Knowing when to say "no" and set boundaries is important, so finding that balance between love for others and love for yourself is an important skill to have. In this episode, Alison sits down with Emily Frisella to discuss the wisdom she imparts in her book, “Relationships First.”Emily Frisella is a multi-passionate entrepreneur, business coach, speaker, and author of three best-selling books. She started her first business at just 20 years old, and since then she has built successful businesses by prioritizing relationships and operating from her core values. Emily's mission is to help women reach their potential and empower them to lead in their personal and professional lives through self-development, awareness, and learning to brand their passions and talents. Emily has a message that is especially important for young people to hear early on, and that is people who will criticize you have a problem with themselves, so always stay true to yourself. This is an episode you will want to share with people of all ages as Emily empowers you to love people fiercely while being authentically you.Emily gets real and honest about how she manages to get everything done and how she has been able to reach the success she has accomplished. She shares how she manages stress and how she got comfortable saying no while continuing to operate from a place of gratitude and integrity. It is important to protect your peace and energy, so knowing how to audit the circle of those around you will help you keep a healthy balance of pouring into others while not neglecting to pour into yourself. Too many people are operating out of a mentality of transactional relationships and only caring what other people can offer them, but Emily encourages us all to be genuine in our relationships and the rest will fall into place.Key highlights:Emily's childhood growing up as a shy and very introverted childLessons Emily learned growing up and her message for young people to not pay attention to those that criticize and learn to love yourselfHow people treat you is a “them” problem, not a “you” problem Build a community that is for you and not against you Gradually working people out of your lifeHow Emily got comfortable saying "no"The trouble with social media and people not being honestHow Emily manages stressPeople, passion, and profits: Treating people right will get you profitsTime is love, and the power of handwritten lettersEpisode resources:Get a copy of Emily's book: Relationships First Connect with Emily: Instagram: @emilyfrisellaWebsite: emilyfrisella.comConnect with Alison:Instagram: @alisonanswers | @lagercounselingWebsite: LagerCounseling.comYouTube: Alison AnswersFacebook: Alison Lager Lcsw Casac

When we think about a lender, we don't always consider how a great lender can be so valuable to our business. It's so much more than just getting to the closing table. A lender that puts their agent and client relationships first is going to go the extra mile. Our preferred lender, William Koedatich of Crown Home Mortgage, does just that. Do you own your business or does your business own you? Far too often, entrepreneurs lose the point of why they started a company in the first place. Their net worth continues to rise, but in the process, every other area of life takes a hit. And I'll be the first to admit, I've been there! I kept telling myself, “I'm doing it for my family.” But it turns out, it was at the expense of my family. I was building a life around my business, instead of the other way around, and knew I needed to make a shift. This is ultimately what led to starting Front Row Dads. I realized that wealth wasn't the destination, it's simply the vehicle to get you there. The purpose of building a business is to fund your perfect life. That's what today's episode is all about. As a lead up to the Business Evolution Online Summit, I'm talking with Kyle Reedstrom. Kyle is the Co-Founder of Passive 25K Group—a company that believes in putting lifestyle before work by building up passive income sources and finding financial freedom. He's currently working towards reaching $25k/month in passive income and teaching others how to do the same. If you have a goal to buy back your time so you can spend more of it with your spouse and kids, this episode is for you! Kyle Reedstrom Podcast Highlights How the FRD community helped Kyle get through a difficult time with his newborn daughter. Building a life around your business, not the other way around. Focus & Finish: Kyle's mantra for accomplishing big goals and how he's using it to work his way up to $25k/month in passive income. How can someone go from working 40+ hours/week to beginning their passive income journey? Learn Kyle's process for filtering out business ideas (even the good ones) so you can stay focused on the finish line. The easiest passive income investing vehicles to get started with. Don't let your thirst for more get in the way of what matters most. Hear the story of how Kyle's Dad spent their entire family vacation working, instead of spending time together and getting to know his grandkids. We are relaunching the Equity Is podcast. For this first episode back we are looking at one of the ways that equity is restorative, by looking at the Relationships First Program. This is a restorative justice-practices philosophy that emphasizes the importance of positive, authentic human connection and its link to both academic success and social-emotional learning. In the first part of the episode we talk to Abby Gray and Josh Staub who implemented the program here at the district. We also look into what this program looks like at one of its schools, Taylor Elementary. We interviewed their principal David Laver, Nicole Molino an RF coach, and Mason a student at the school. When asking a group of teachers what has the most impact on their students' performance in their classroom, the resounding answer I've heard in my career is without a doubt relationships - building relationships with our students that lets them know we are rooting for them, guiding them, and that allows them to trust us and invest in the course and what we're asking them to do. As much as we recognize that relationships have the most powerful impact on moving the needle with our students, all the other aspects of teaching that pile up in a day take precedence over taking the time to build relationships. In today's episode, I have a proposal on what it could look like to actually make relationship building a top priority. And if there were a calendar of how you spent time in your classroom, this proposal I have for you would allow you to spend more time working one-on-one with your students, and ultimately building relationships than any other item on your docket. After listening to this episode you'll know the best way to streamline the content delivery of your course, what ultimately takes up the most time, am I right?, so that focusing on students and not feeling guilty spending time building relationships with each of them is a real thing that happens in your classroom on a regular basis. Because here's the thing. As the teacher in the room, you want to know your students. You've felt the pressure of doing everything else other than just getting to know your students, and it's time that you actually have time to focus on building relationships without feeling like you're wasting time doing it - without feeling like you're missing out on pressure time spent on the content. I can't wait to let you in on this strategy. Let's get to it. The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education
Welcome to the Counter Narrative Podcast, a show designed to change the way we talk, and think, about education. By sharing stories of successes and triumphs, we aim to challenge the dominant narrative that often negatively portrays our disenfranchised populations. I'm your host, Charles Williams. An educator for 15 years, a current school principal in Chicago, and an educational consultant. Let's get started. In this episode, I chat with Dawn Harris, a passionate and energetic educator who lives by the motto, “Relationships First.” In her roles as a secondary English Language Arts Educator, Gifted and Talented Teacher, and Associate Professor of Teacher Education, Dawn continually strives to bring authentic and engaging learning experiences to students of all ages. Dawn's professional teaching experiences have been showcased in scholarly journals and at local, regional, national, and international conferences. Dawn's first book, Plan Like a Pirate, is set to release in 2021. During our conversation, we discussed the power of creating equity committees as we attempt to give students a full educational experience. To do this, however, we must question how racism affects those around us by attempting to understand their perspectives. It's important to note that this takes work and that mistakes will happen along the way. Dawn recommends several ways to move forward including hosting watch parties to discuss the plethora of virtual professional development now readily available. Relationships are the key to long term success in business and in professional services. Today's show, which is day ten, in ten days of success, outlines the five ways you can put relationships first in your business.First: Start with an external orientation. You have to put the needs of the client at the forefront of everything you do. Every conversation with the client should focus on what they want, what they need, and how you can help them - even if that help is outside of the scope of your normal duties.Second: Measure lifetime value of client relationships. Stop thinking about individual transactions. Think about the value of the relationship over the course of a lifetime. Your client, the person, will be with you forever if you think about helping them over and over again during your career. They may move from job-to-job but they will stay with you if you think about the totally of that relationship and not individual transactions.Third: Think of the value exchange. Sometimes it is goods and services for money. Sometimes the value is simply an answer to a question. But each time you interact with a client, they have to come away feeling like they received great value from you. Fourth: Provide support beyond the typical relationship. No matter what your product or service, you are responsible for the growth of your client's business. This is important for the survival of the business as well as the growth of your relationship. You must buy from your client. You must pass referrals to your client. You must introduce your client to people who can connect them with additional opportunity.Fifth: Be easy to work with. Don't make people jump through hoops to work with you. Answer your phone. Return calls. Reply to email. Give people straight answers. Treat everyone like they are your best friend or your most treasured relative. If you do, they normally have a chance to last your entire career. These relationships are usually formed with people who have the ability to influence (see send) consistent business to your agency. However, if that's the first and only way you approach them, there's a good chance it won't make it that long. You'll know it's working when you have enough people sending you all their business with you asking. That's what I talk to Josh Berg, of Blue Lion Insurance, about possibly having too much authenticity.
