Due to some trouble in college Ryan was not eligible to get a promotion to assistant manager at a movie theater with the only plan he could come up with was being a head janitor until he could retire. This was the plan until an opportunity arose for him to get into D2D sales.With the first check being  roughly $200, Ryan had a choice to make.  Either he quit sales and go back to his custodial aspiration, or become a student of of the game and improve on the things he can. Spoiler alert, Ryan did the latter. After studying different aspects of leadership, self development and sales, Ryan became a top earner.With success comes obstacles along the way. So I'm going to start with yet another apology and say that I'm sorry for not publishing last week, not uploading any episodes. I know that I've made quite a few commitments to myself and to each and every one of you listening that I will be posting consistently going forward... But there's no excuse. There's no justification. But the last couple of weeks were a little bit tougher than what I'm used to. The summit went live, the summit ended, then I went through a whole period of uncertainty and not knowing which direction to go. So with everything added together, it's been a little overwhelming the past couple of weeks, but I'm glad I'm back. And I feel like I spent a lot of time processing and I have more of a direction with the podcast and the direction I want to be taking it. So make sure you stay tuned for that. But today, I really want to just share more about the biggest takeaway that I've learned throughout the process of putting together the summit, and how that would actually help you start redefining what success means to you. [Cue Intro]So where do I even begin with the last three weeks? It's been such a crazy roller coaster ride that I'm still taking the time to process what has really happened. I would have to say ever since the end of 2019... Sorry, not 2019, 2020. Just this last year, is when I really fully committed myself to the summit. And ever since then it's been just sprinting in a marathon, not knowing when you're going to run out of gas. But knowing that once you start, you have to finish you got to see it through. So finally being on the other side of that conversation being on the other side of the summit. And now with everything said and done, it's been really hard just figuring out what really comes next. Because for each and every one of you that has been following me this whole time, you'll know that I've been taking this journey really step by step. I really hadn't really planned out everything before taking that first step. And why I did that was because my whole life I've always struggled with over planning, overthinking and as a result, not taking any action because I would always think about how things could go wrong or how things have to fit into place, and is it worth taking the risk. So I was really that person that really took it to the extreme where I needed to know every step of the way. I needed to know every piece of the puzzle before I was really even willing to commit that very first step. But during this whole process of putting this summit together, I learned that I can't be more wrong about that. Because for the first time in my life, I decided to go out on this path, this journey and put together a summit — a free event for three weeks without the promise of money because the event was free, right? People had the option to upgrade their ticket to an All-Access Pass to keep lifetime access to each and every one of the interviews. But at the same time that wasn't required. For the people who did just wanted to show up for the three days that the summit went live, the event was free. So going through this process has been the I would say the most uncertain it's ever been, not knowing where I was going to be financially coming out of this. I didn't know where I was going to be mentally, emotionally and physically having to put in so much work in such a short period of time. And I'm glad I did it. I really am because both- it was just my business partner I that pulled us together, it was a team of two. And we pulled together a three-day virtual summit that had 31 speakers from I believe six or seven different countries. So it was quite the accomplishment, putting it all together, organizing it, and also learning the skills that were necessary in order to get there. So when the summit first went live, it was one of the most unreal moments of my life because I've worked on this project or on this project for the last three months. And I finally shared it with the world and over the course of the three days the summit went live, it was a whirlwind. It's kind of funny, because when the summit goes live, when the event goes live, you're supposed to bring the most energy, as much as you can. But I was the most exhausted. I've literally been pulling all-nighters for pretty much three weeks in a row. My business partner has been pulling all-nighters for three weeks in a row. We were exhausted. So over the three days, we were literally engaging as much as we can with our online communities we built because since it wasn't exactly a live event, and all the interviews were pre-recorded and broadcasted for 24 hours on each day because we were trying to reach a global audience, it was hard to facilitate networking, it was hard to facilitate that sense of community. And that was something that we really learned in that process. But when everything was said and done, that was, honestly the hardest period... was when the summit ended, because I didn't really plan for what life would be like after the summit. Some might call me crazy, some might call me courageous. But whatever your opinion is, that was the reality. Because I wanted to use the summit as a vehicle for me to learn more about my audience, to learn more about the people I'm trying to serve, I'm trying to help. So I can actually create a service or a product that will actually serve a need. So it's a- I don't know what you call it an "unconventional" way of doing business, but it was different than how I've ever done business. Because like I said earlier in this episode that I tried to plan everything else out before I ever take action. So this was a very different approach for me. So going through those, like I would say, the last three, four days, there was just a lot of like, "what now?" Like we were reaching out, we were sending out surveys, we were actually getting feedback from everybody who attended the summit (or the people who are willing to submit a survey). And it was... it was just I think the hardest part was really deciphering what people wanted. Because at the end of the day, it really still is an assumption on our end. We can gather as much information as we possibly can, but we don't know what the people really want, and the survey was the closest for us to get that information. And going through that process of figuring out processing and having people asking me, "Was the summit even a success"? And I had so many friends ask me because how can I blame them? That's- the summit has been literally everything I've been talking about up until this point in time. So with all the questions on top of, you know, my own struggle of finding clarity, it got overwhelming. And I kind of dropped off social media for a bit, I didn't publish any podcast episodes for a bit, and it was just an emotional roller coaster. But like I said, it's always the periods of time that are the toughest that you learn the most. And I can confidently say that the past week, like right after the summit, was definitely the hardest it's been in this journey. And I find that surprising because I thought going through the summit, putting it together, learning how to conduct interviews, edit interviews, put- build up the funnel and the sites for the summit, those were going to be the hard parts, because there's a lot of learning involved. But it was really the last week because I felt like I still had a focus when it came to the summit. So when the summit ended, and now it was really up to me to build out the next part of my business, of this business, it got scary, it got hard because now I had to make decisions. And each decision, as educated as it can get, is still an assumption. And this is where for me my ability to really critically think actually holds me back. Because for the most part, critical thinking is great. You know, I mean, you process everything you make sure you- have all your ducks in a row, you make sure you tie up all loose ends before making a decision. But at the same time, when you overthink it that would actually prevent you from taking action. However, we have been getting feedback, I can't deny that it's been a slow, gruelling process. And at the same time, it's really taught me to really... I wouldn't say be patient, I never liked telling people to be patient, because you need to be aggressive in getting what you want, but at the same time, you have to recognize that in order for you to do anything great, it takes time. And at times, it might feel like waking up to the same reality. And that was pretty much what it was like for me for the summit. Now I've made so many great connections now have a platform, I have a clear direction. But it took three months of waking up to the same reality for me to get to this point. And every day when I woke up during the process of putting together the summit, I would question myself, "why am I still doing this"? "Is it worth it"? "Is it worth the time I put into it"? So I think a huge lesson to be learned here is that you have to be aggressive... I wouldn't say be patient, but at the same time, you have to recognize that change doesn't happen immediately. And there will be days that you wake up working towards a goal or a project that will take quite a bit of time for you to complete and during that period of time you will be waking up to the same reality. So you have to build the grit, right, and you also have to have a clear vision of where you're aiming for because it will be a process. For the summit, which took three months. For me to really build up Neo Genesis and create a community around it and build it out the way I want it to build, it'll take years, there's no doubt about that. So it's so important for you to be passionate about what you're doing. It's not because passion will pay you money, you have to find that good in-between, between not working on something that you won't hate waking up in the morning to work on. But at the same time, you have to be able to monetize it because I feel like on a creative standpoint, now I've been networking with more creatives and I have been becoming more of a creative myself, is that while doing something that you're passionate about is great. But at the end of the day, if you can't monetize it, you can't continue doing it because we still live in a world that is run by money, right? Like it or not, and it requires money for you to continue to do what you're passionate about. And more importantly, impact people by doing what you're passionate about. And that was a huge key thing because you have all the entrepreneurs that only care about money. I can't say for every entrepreneur, but you have all the business people that is very money-focused, but then you have all the creatives that are really focused on their passion and how their work can impact people. But it's an in-between. and I could go on and on about the different lessons that I have learned, but the one thing I do want to bring up before I go to my biggest takeaway from the summit is that all entrepreneurs are creatives, and all creatives are entrepreneurs. And that's how it should be. And I think that I come from more of a business / entrepreneurial background. I never saw myself as a creative before the summit before this podcast, and I also know a lot of creatives that don't see themselves as entrepreneurs, because they just see themselves as artists. And that's not a bad thing. But at the same time, I feel like entrepreneurs and artists, creatives are really one of the same because if you think of our businesses in this way, in this perspective, a business is really a creation, right? It's an expression from your soul. If you are able to create a business that can impact people, that was an idea that you formed, and you were using your idea as a vehicle as your business as a vehicle to create impact. So no, I really want more and more entrepreneurs to see themselves as creative. But that's me on a tangent, on a side note. To get to the meat of this episode, the biggest lesson I've learned from the summit. And I think that you might be surprised, you might not be, and the biggest thing was really don't get too attached to an outcome. When especially when you're determining if something was a success or a failure. It is very easy for us to fall into that trap because this is something I've literally been struggling with this past week. And it's something that I've been very aware of, even before the summit launched, was how was I going to define what was a successful summit or not. And because of how society has taught us how to view success, a lot of the time we tie it to an outcome. So for example, with the summit, I could have easily said that the summit is only a success if I get X amount of speakers, or the summit is only a success if I get X amount of people registering for the event, or it's only a success if I make X amount of dollars. A lot of the times in business, that's how we measure success, it's if you think about it, it's actually very similar to a school, if you get X amount of marks, you get an A, you get X amount of marks, you get a B, you get enough A's, a high enough GPA, you graduate or you get to go to post-grad, whatever it is, that's just how our society runs. So as a result, it is actually very, very ingrained in us how we should determine if something we did was successful or not. But if I've learned anything in this process of putting together this summit is that if you tie your success to the outcome of whatever you're doing, you're looking at it completely wrong. What you need to be doing instead is to look back at the project, or whatever you're working on, and see what you've learned in the process. So I'm gonna use the summit, for example, because this has been my life. And this is where I'm drawing this experience from. And during the summit, like quite honestly, I didn't hit the number of registrations I wanted to hit. I didn't make the amount of money I wanted to make. Yes, it was a free event. But I also had a certain expectation that there would be a handful of people upgrading to the All-Access Pass... and that didn't happen. So very naturally, I would be disappointed. I'd be like okay, I put all this effort in and it didn't really have the desired results that I was looking for. And for a while, I was going towards that way of thinking. But I had to remind myself at the end of the day, what is considered a "success" is up to you. And a lot of the time, we don't think about that is because society has taught us to view success in a certain way, right? If we make X amount of dollars in a project, in business, now you're a success, that project was a success, that venture was a success. And I'm not saying that's not great at all. But I feel like if you determine it like that you miss out a lot of it because it's really about what you learn in the process. I don't know, am I repeating myself at this point in time, but like I said, for the summit, right, I've learned how to interview people, right? I went through a whole pressure cooker of learning how to facilitate interviews with 31 expert entrepreneurs. I had to learn how to build a membership site for All-Access Pass members. I had to learn how to build the site for the summit. I had to learn how to create great interview questions. I had to learn how to deal with all the emotional garbage that's happening in your head while you're going through these periods of growth and discomfort. And over the three months, if I look back on it, I definitely have become a different person than the process. And if I didn't go through it, I would still be... I would say, not less of a person, but I would be less capable because I didn't push myself to do this. So... So this process was priceless, in a sense. Before the summit even launched, I already saw it as a success. Obviously, it's one thing to tell yourself, and it's another thing to emotionally feel it. And that's why it's so important for you to be conscious because I'm telling myself that this is summit was a success no matter what. That doesn't mean that I'm in a- I'm going to immediately feel that result. And I think that's important part is that, oh, I need to feel it immediately if I see something a certain way. But that's not the case. It's about being very conscious that even though I might not feel like the summit was a success right now, I know deep down it is. And I need to keep reminding myself every time I have a negative thought of like "why I did this summit", or "why did I put so much time into it", I remind myself that I put in so much time not because of the money, not because of you know the clout, or how many people I can even reach, but who have I become in the process of putting the summit together? And I think that it's so important and it's a point that so many people miss. So I'm going to repeat it one more time: Do not attach the outcome to what you determine as successful or not. Because the more you are open to any outcome, the more you are less married to a particular outcome, the more you learn from that experience. The more you learn from that experience, the better you get. The better you get, the more accomplished you get, and the more confident you get in yourself. And the more you learn, the faster you grow. And it's all tied in together, right. And that's why it's so important for you to start off with the right perspective to see things in the right lens... is because it's really the beginning of everything. How you see things, what your perspective is, will determine how you tackle each challenge every single day and what you learn from each challenge. And I think that is a huge part where, you know, we always talk about how two people can tackle the same situation with a different attitude. But at the same time, not a lot of people talk about that two people can walk away from the same situation, learning differently, learning at different paces. One person might come out of the same situation learning 100 times more than another person. And it all starts with how they view the challenge, how they view what they do, and their perspective on what they determine as successful. So, yeah, that was really the biggest takeaway I had. I've learned a lot more, and you know, I will be continuing to dissect the different things I've learned to apply to myself and to apply to know the content I'm deciding to put out going forward. But that's all I have for you today, there's really one key takeaway. I know I had a few other nuggets sprinkled in, but the one thing I really want you to remember is to stop determining what you see as successful or a failure based on the outcome. Start basing it on what you've learned in the process, how you've grown in the process, and the person you've become in the process. So I hope that's helped. I have a couple more episodes before I'm actually ending off this season. I'll have more details on that I'm not going to go too far into it. But it feels right for me to turn this show into a season-based show just to kind of document my journey. Now the summit's over I believe that- or I feel like it's best for us to start Season 2, a new chapter. But I will actually be going into more detail in a later episode on this. Petar Lackovic is a master salesman. He is the Director of Sales and Entrepreneur Development at The Entourage and has helped thousands of entrepreneurs achieve life-changing results in their business. Petar has always had a talent for sales. He landed his first sales job at a gym, and within two weeks he was promoted to Sales Manager on the back of his outstanding results. Another two and a half weeks later, he was promoted again and found himself managing his first business.
