Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. Right in time for the movies, Deadpool co-creator + writing legend Fabian Nicieza joins our host Lodro Rinzler for Count Nefaria stealing Washington D.C. He would have gotten away with it too if not for those pesky telepaths. Born in Argentina, Fabian grew up on (and learned English from) X-Men comics so we dive into issue 23, syncing with his arrival in the good old U.S. of A. Count Nefaria has kidnapped the X-Men and is holding Washington D.C. hostage for seventy trazilliom dollars. Also in this episode: what it's like to sell literal millions of comics each month (it was the 90s) Professor X forgets that the telephone exists Alfred Hitchcock has nothing on The Scarecrow in the 60s framing the X-Men was just a thing everyone did the first person to call Professor X a dick on panel - Fabian will kill off Colossus (if he has to) What does any of this mean for Fabian's future? Tune in to find out! Fabian Nicieza has worked for Marvel since 1985 when he started out in the department for Fisher-Price licensed activity books. He moved on to become Marvel's Advertising Manager and then during that time, Fabian also began writing for Marvel on a freelance basis. His first published book was PSI-FORCE #9 in 1987. He then went on to write THE NEW WARRIORS which was simply wonderful. Clearly a glutton for punishment, Fabian also began writing several of Marvel's top-selling X-titles, including X-FORCE, CABLE, DEADPOOL and the company's #1 selling book, X-MEN. These books not only sold millions of copies to gazillions of readers, Fabian also got to star in a series of X-Men Pizza Hut videos. And outside of comics, Fabian has worked with STARLIGHT RUNNER ENTERTAINMENT for 20 years on story world development and franchise management consultation for some of the biggest entertainment companies on some of the biggest properties. He has written two novels including SUBURBAN DICKS which was nominated by the Mystery Writers of America for an Edgar Award. His NEW comic Free Agents is out NOW! You should go pick it up it's a lot of fun. We chat with Lynne about her book and what foods she uses to substitute for products that are on the NO GO List.  Quotes from This Episode: " I just made a decision early in my life in my forties that I was going to do everything I had to do to stay healthy, stay on my feet, stay alive. I was a single mother of three. So I was determined to do what I needed to do." A whole food plant-based diet is so beneficial for chronic disease. Plants give us nourishment we need and help us avoid the saturated fat that animal products contain. While adding some animal products from time to time is still okay when you want to maintain some balance, making sure they are high quality is important. It's also important to take care of your mental health. Yoga, meditation and mindfulness can all help control stress. As can doing things like family dinners, movie nights and other ways to connect with those you love. When we keep ourselves in a mostly stress free state this helps our health overall. The mind and body are very connected! Sleep is another thing our body needs in order to stay at optimum health. Our diets, exercise and mental well being can be so influenced by how rested we are! It's also very important to check in regularly with your doctor and see your doctor should you feel something is wrong. On this episode of the Superpowers podcast, Bill and Chris talk with Deborah Wahl, Global CMO at General Motors. Growing up, Deborah earned the nickname “Big D” from her siblings for her go-getter attitude and unrelenting pursuit of success. Deborah was born and raised in Detroit. Her father was in the auto industry and she did her first internship at GM back in the 80s. She told Bill and Chris, “I looked around and said ‘wow, this is a tough industry for women.’” Undeterred, she pressed on and triumphed. She received her MBA from Wharton and spent four years in the world of finance, travelling the world while working at Chase Bank. Later, she worked in Paris on a project for an anti-allergy bed sheet company that taught her important lessons on how to grow and develop a business. After 3 years in Paris, Deborah returned to America to seek out marketing jobs that would benefit from her global business perspective. She took an interview back in Detroit at Ford. “They picked us up from the airport and took us directly to the test track,” she told the hosts. The excitement drew Deborah back into the auto industry. She asked to be placed in Latin America and was offered a job as an Advertising Manager in Brazil. Deborah’s passion for marketing led to jobs at Mazda, Mercury, and Toyota. In 2007 she joined Chrysler and moved back to Detroit. That fateful decision changed her career course after the financial distress Chrysler faced the following year, causing Deborah to leave the auto industry for ten years. In 2014 she joined McDonald’s as CMO. Deborah told the hosts, “I couldn’t resist the challenge. It was an American company that needed to transform.” For three years she oversaw health changes in the menu and the implementation of “All Day Breakfast” – a move some considered key to the fast food giant’s turnaround in the 2010s. After McDonald’s, Deborah returned to the auto industry as the CMO of Cadillac in New York. A year leader, she took on her current role as the Global CMO of GM. Deborah has been instrumental in putting safety and electric vehicles at the forefront of GM’s branding. With her guidance, GM is making swift innovations to pursue its goals. Before leaving, Deborah shared advice for young women tackling the auto industry: “Watch who speaks to the room… often women don’t speak up. Take a seat at the table and don’t be afraid to speak up… listen to the other women in the room and build on their statements.” The hosts decided that Deborah’s superpower is the global perspective she’s brought to her hometown, the auto industry, and Detroit, as well as her willingness to take calculated risks with a tenacity that many people are too scared to do.

Attribution Discovery & Secrets To Scaling Your Digital Marketing with Vanessa Branco

Vanessa Branco knows:  When you buy digital media at scale, you need to have advertising attribution.  She used Attribution to discover the 'halo' of digital advertising which filled the funnel for one public company and increased their ROI over 300%!  Tune in for an insightful episode as Vanessa offers important advice on creative performance, what to budget for testing, and how long you should test for (it’s longer than you’d think!).   Guest bio: Vanessa Branco has been working with startups, Fortune 100’s and publicly traded companies for well over 15 years. Her extensive experience includes digital branding and marketing, expertise in media and creative optimization, performance-based marketing, traffic growth, attribution, and customer retention.   She first started as Advertising Manager for a publicly-traded company which was advertising in-house and operating sites including screensavers.com. She currently serves as Vice president of business development for a white label trading desk and through her digital consultancy, VersaNine, Vanessa provides brands who are looking to in-house their media buying a hands-on expert.   Key takeaways: [1:33] I introduce today’s guest, Vanessa Branco, and ask her about how she came to be where she is today from a false start in finance in the early 2000s. [4:42] Vanessa calls herself white-labeled which means that she works in-house but she is still an outsourced asset — a contracted CMO. [6:17] Priorities are always the same: acquiring customers, driving revenue, increasing ROI; it’s the methods that have diversified. Vanessa talks us through her experience at screensavers.com. [10:25] Without attribution, manual reporting, a three-month turnover customer rate and a constant need to acquire new people, Vanessa talks about her strategy to start slow. She also talks about the birth of the affiliate networks, pixels, and the secret sauce back then (the Halo effect). [14:21] After her crazy experience at the very start of MySpace, Vanessa was already trying to prove that display worked. She recounts her experience with over-counting. [21:09] After all this over-counting and inaccurate reporting, what happened when attribution came into this scenario? Vanessa shares a funny story about her big vs. small vendor. [25:17] Vanessa details the results of using attribution: testing different creatives, changing affiliate programs and search terms and changing vendors, the way they’re viewed, and the parts they play, which in turn, changes budget attribution. [27:05] Whatever happened to that small vendor? [28:35] I highlight a great point Vanessa has made: it’s not only about the math, but you also have to move slowly and get the people on board — 3 to 6 months is usually what it takes, according to her. [30:29] Can attribution tell you what creative is performing? Vanessa insists it absolutely can, granted you put in the work and tag it properly. Attribution, along with the CRM data, can also give you the ‘why’ of a customer’s decision, and this is important information for future campaigns. [33:40] Vanessa explains how many sets of creatives you should be running simultaneously for an example budget of 250K a month. She also shares advice on how long to test your creative for! [36:47] Vanessa shares one thing that she knows that no one else knows: if you’re not using attribution for everything — capturing the whole journey and it’s much, much longer than you think — you don’t have attribution. I thank her for coming on the podcast and sharing so much of her experience.   Be sure to tune in for the next episode and thanks for listening!   Connect with our guest: Vanessa M. We take a break from sourdoughs and sprouted grains to talk about a very different category of bread: cornbread! Mark Kelly, PR and Advertising Manager of Lodge Cast Iron joins us to talk about the storied history of the family-owned company and the National Cornbread Festival they helped found in 1996. Lodge Cast Iron was founded in 1896 when Joseph Lodge and his wife settled in South Pittsburg, Tennessee and opened their first foundry. South Pittsburg is nestled alongside the Cumberland Plateau of the Appalachian Mountains, and today has a population of about 3,300 people. Mark talks about the tight-knit community that’s instrumental to the success of Lodge’s American-made cast iron. Lodge has been on the cutting edge of technology for its entire history. In 1950, they converted the foundry from a hand-pour operation to an automated molding process (a rare upgrade for the time). This led to safer and more efficient manufacturing and helped keep up with increasing demand. The replacement of coal-fired cupola furnaces with an electro-magnetic induction melting system in 1992 earned a Tennessee Governor’s Award for Excellence in Hazardous Waste Reduction. They changed the game once again in 2002, with the introduction of pre-seasoned cookware, eliminating the hassle of its unseasoned counterparts. It was an industry first that has since become an industry standard. HRN On Tour is powered by Simplecast.

Howard Bomstein is a native Washingtonian. Listen in to Howard talk to Andy O about his immigrant parents, school, his family, the Army, his early career choices, opening and closing the doors of his advertising agency, and landing on his feet at the Washington Post. Howard Bomstein - Advertising Manager Washington Post - Our Town Howard also shares personal stories such as how he fell in love with, and married, Polly, and how it was that he and Andy ended up in a feud that lasted many years until a mutual friend interceded. One thing for sure, you will come to understand Howard’s staying power in the market: connections, connections, connections. Howard Bomstein was born in Washington DC in 1948 to immigrant parents. His Dad immigrated to Baltimore in 1920, and graduated from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in 1935. When he found he could earn $5 a week more in DC, he and Howard’s Mom moved there, and ran the Pharmacy at Union Station. Howard never knew his Dad. He died 12 days after Howard was born. His Mom raised him as a “single Mom”. She didn’t remarry until Howard was in his early 20s. Howard began his life with his Mom and Dad on Roxanna Road NW just south of the 16th Street Circle. In 1961, his Mom moved the family to Montgomery County where he went to school. Howard attended Blair High School in Silver Spring, and went on to the University of Maryland where he graduated with a degree in Information Systems Management. He says “Unfortunately it was not something I was very good at . . . I was terrible at it. . . to this day I'm terrible with computers.” Andy asks Howard about his family and how he and his wife Polly met. Polly worked as a receptionist for Howard’s advertising agency, The Bomstein Agency, and they were moving offices. “I remember the day I was smitten with Polly. We were moving the office . . . literally across the street . . . basically carting things from one office to the other. The [new] office had hardwood floors and I remember as we were moving things in Polly caught my eye because she was wearing blue jeans and Nike tennis shoes and a sweatshirt and I just thought she was beautiful.” Howard and Polly have three beautiful daughters all of whom are college grads. Andy chuckles and tells Howard that he looks a “little heavier now” now that he’s finished paying tuition. A conversation ensues between Andy and Howard about college in today’s world and we learn that Howard is an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland. He teaches marketing and branding. Andy asks Howard what led him into advertising and starting his own agency. Howard Bomstein takes us through life after college and some of the jobs he had before creating The Bomstein Agency. In 1970, before graduation from the University of Maryland, Howard knew he was going to be drafted so he enlisted in the Army and “rose to the enormous rank of specialist fourth class and my military occupational specialty MOS was a 76B20 I was a clerk typist. . . in a supply unit and what you learn to do in is to count blankets. “ He became very good at counting blankets before leaving the Army and coming home to go to grad school. Howard Bomstein graduated with a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Penn State, but instead of working in public administration he took an offer to work for his cousin in the home building business. He became an assistant in the marketing department at US Homes for $8000.00 a year doing statistical analysis. “In the Fall of 1974, we had a recession. It was pretty severe. . .” and was due to price control of gasoline. “So, Herman came to me and said I'm sorry I've got some bad news but I have to lay you off because we're not selling any houses and the markets terrible.” All was not lost, however, because Howard had gotten to know Bill Regardie. Bill and his wife, Renay, had Housing Data Reports to which US Homes subscribed.

In this episode, Steven Mario Cavallo discusses many aspects of how to grow your sales, how to do business development effectively and efficiently; and also brings you information about cultivating business using the LinkedIn platform – the world’s biggest professional network. Today we focus on the system that drives sales revenue, as this is usually the focus of most businesses’ efforts. Note however, that an increase in sales does not necessarily result in increases in profits, as large volumes often require low margins. Certain market conditions must already exist in order to make a meaningful number of sales: Market must be of a viable size and have buyers with the economic means to purchase Buyers in that market must have a need they want to fulfil with your product or service Buyers must be made aware that your type of product or service exists and how it benefits them Certain conditions must be met by the firm in order to make a meaningful number of sales: Your business must have a reliable supply of the product, or the capacity to produce the service you sell You must have adequate distribution (either physical or virtual) through which to sell (either owned by you or supplied to the market via distributors) Most importantly, your product or service must fit the actual need the market has (i.e. it must effectively solve the problem, or cater to the needs of the buyers in that market). CRITICAL: The buyer must perceive that your good or service provides them with more value than the monetary value they’ve forgone. In this way, a small component or ingredient that saves a business a million dollars a year (or makes them an extra million dollars a year) is WORTH a lot of money to the buyer, even if it costs a few cents to make. (e.g. infrared heater for commercial painting industry). If your buyers perceive the value they get is less than the dollar price of your offering, then either your price is too high or you need to develop your product further (or create a new one that more directly fills their needs). Best practise is to conduct research that gives you a detailed understanding of what buyers actually want, and then go make it to that exact spec. That way, you have an offering that ‘ticks all their boxes’ and appears custom-made for them. LEAD GENERATION From a microeconomics perspective, you must know the meaningful market segments of your buyers Consumer Businesses Government Geographic Demographic (age, income, education) Size Cultural Industry classification (ANZSIC in Australia, NACE in Europe, UKSIC in Britain, NAICS in North America) Understanding the problems from the perspective of each of your segments. Whether you sell to consumers or business, always be certain on how your product or service takes their specific pain away. Remember, each segment has different pains/needs/wants so alter what you tell each so they only hear what is relevant to them. Choose appropriate promotional channels and methods Advertising Trade magazines (companies that supply to specific trades) Television and radio (broad based appeal, FMCG, lowest cost per impression) Newspapers (ability to include more detail in an ad, cut-out coupons) Online (interactive, control costs, able to target niche interests via Facebook ads) Promotion via independent distributors or satellite branches (push initiatives such as holidays for highest performing vendor) Networking events (represent your company where influencers are, promote to industry groups) You must have a soundly designed referral system that generates new customers automatically. There are certain attributes of such a system that are critical, so ensure you engage a firm that understands those principals. If set up correctly, it can be extremely powerful in growing your business as is evidenced in the referral programmes we have set up for clients. Public relations, publicity, events etc. (if your business has notoriety, new invention, provide commentary to current events of controversy) Include an appropriate call to action Toll free number Visit a store or distributor Book a free consult Go to the website Click to initiate chat session Click to buy now (online) In app purchase SALES MANAGEMENT Sales force in the organisational structure Best integrated as part of the marketing function Sales Manager, Advertising Manager, PR Manager, Market Research Manager, Customer Service Manager all report to the Director of Marketing This ensures coherence and that all outward efforts are unified (e.g. nothing worse than a sales rep that is not aware of a current special when quizzed by a customer) Ensures as customer feedback comes back to organisation, it is properly assimilated into product development Most importantly, it gives the organisation a market orientation (i.e. everything is aligned with the needs of the market) Sales territories Ensure the basis by which you assign territories is based on the characteristics of the PEOPLE that comprise the market, i.e. the nature of the buyers. This may not have any correspondence to commonly accepted geographical regions, particularly within a single city. Territorial design is at optimum when all districts equal in both sales potential and the sales reps’ workload. When sales potentials are equal, then it is easier to compare the sales performance of individual reps and it also improves the morale of your sales force. As population density shifts over time, you must adjust the territories to match or those you rely on to create your revenue will have disputes amongst themselves. Overlay all targets from the different segments onto a geographical area to fully understand the total sales potential of that area. Sales reps are very expensive so aim to minimise travel time wherever possible, and train each rep to be able to properly service different types of customers in the one area to avoid duplication of sales routes by multiple reps. This could drastically increase the number of sales per hour. Use computer aided tools that help solve the travelling salesman problem when in drawing the most efficient sales routes. Build incentives and rewards to encourage high sales performance in your staff and avoid disinterest. Ensure you have the proper amount of sales supervision Enough to provide training and assistance Adequate enforcement that company policies are followed Monitoring of performance Provides relationship, encouragement, assurance and recognition for your people out on the road alone, facing rejection after rejection. Formal motivational drivers e.g. team goals, personal goals, enjoyable work culture, job security, belonging to a strong social structure (look forward to coming back to the workplace at the endo fo the day to see their work mates), respect, involvement in regular staff meeting to contribute and feel ‘ownership’ of the work at hand. Improves morale and leads to greater sales performance SALES PROCESS Let’s visit some of the most crucial elements in personal selling as it pertains both the B2C and B2B. I will touch on areas you cannot afford to be weak in as mistakes here result will prevent any chance for sales growth, no matter how fabulous your product or service is. Readiness of your sales staff Are they adequately trained? Knowledge of each customer segment and its specific needs Up to date with all current specials and has copies of all advertisements Guidance of most appropriate offering matches each type of customer Product knowledge Organisational strengths and competitive advantages/disadvantages Sales technique FAQ (overcoming common objections, returns policy, pricing authority) Indoctrination and belief Sales aids Scripts Brochures Financial simulations that prove the financial viability for customers to buy Demonstration stock Video Provide your sales staff and support team with good CRM and tracking systems so they are informed of the customer details, purchase history, delivery status, financial status and case notes of previous interactions with your organisation. Even the high-end versions of off-the-shelf software such as QuickBooks Pro or Reckon Premier or Xero can do this reasonably well, if the creation of your own custom database is not feasible. Consultative Selling Approach  Is indicative of a relationship-based approach to selling Salesperson focuses on the needs of the buyer (not on their own needs) The client has an issue or problem, which is discussed and understood by the salesperson The client is treated as an equal in this consultative process The salesperson then solves the client’s problem as comprehensively as possible by suggesting the products or services that suit the needs of the client (only suggest things that are relevant) If the buyer understands the seller can remove their pain and the proposed product or service is perceived as more valuable than the asking price…only then can their be a sale. The salesman that talks too much and doesn’t actively listen to the customer cannot transfer to that customer a full appreciation of the incredible work done for them, by everyone in your business. The full value of your work can only be understood when the entire picture is revealed. No professional filmmaker would ever allow an incompetent projectionist to obscure two thirds of a cinematic masterpiece from the audience’s view. Group presentations Common when selling to businesses Presentations are often made to a panel of professional buyers, each of whom represent a different functional department within the organisation: e.g. operations, marketing, finance, engineering Ensure the presentation covers the needs (i.e. solves the problems/ticks to boxes) that are unique to each of these departments (i.e. has a specific part for each of the panel members) Make sure every person fully understands how you can solve their problem or satisfy their need Much more effective to answer questions throughout the presentation, rather than withholding them until the end Include quantitative and qualitative proof that will help the panel (or individual) arrive at a positive purchase decision (e.g. calculations using their real numbers to give reliable estimates of savings; or photographs and video or before/after results; and wherever possible, live demonstrations that involve the audience such as torture tests). If you sell to resellers, clearly communicate how your product or service is commercially advantageous to them: The resale-ability of your product and how easy it is for them to sell Opportunity for greater sales volumes, more gross profit on resale and is cheaper for them to acquire, has lower transport costs, can be delivered more quickly, proximity means they need to warehouse as much etc. Emphasise that you provide superb training support, marketing support, easy ordering, easy returns for returned items, favourable credit terms and another other benefits. Responding to objections and problems Common types of objections Related to the customer’s situation or attitude (e.g. loyalty to a current supplier) Related to your product or service (e.g. price, missing features) Related to your company or the salesperson (e.g. company reputation, rep is too young) Receiving objections Anticipate and prepare (be ready for the common concerns) Your sales staff must never avoid objections Analyse their background and cause (to understand them) Prepare sheets for your sales force detailing common objections in each segment, with the appropriate responses Be positive and confident, but never cocky. Your salespeople’s goal is to provide genuine help, not win an argument Your staff should deal with each objection as when it is raised or the buyer will not hear any more of what the salesperson says because their mind will be stuck on the unresolved issue and so block any chance of a sale Objections to Price (3: you’re too expensive, it’s outside my budget, it’s not worth the money) Price and value It is your sales team’s responsibility to ensure the buyer has a full opportunity to examine value rather than the initial price. Very few buyers can buy solely on price (this is possibly only with commodities) Make this your sale team’s mantra: “Value of the total benefit of owning a product/service compared to the total cost of owning it” The total cost of ownership includes the initial price, plus the cost in money, time & inconvenience of operation, service maintenance or repairs, over its useful life. The total benefit of ownership includes both tangible benefits (works correctly, is reliable, durable etc.) and intangible benefits (reputation, vendor support, services, prestige, peace of mind, improved self-image etc.). Ensure your sales force has the ability to properly demonstrate the lifecycle costing comparisons using real-life figures over different time periods that provide the total cost of ownership is less with your product, despite the higher initial price. It is essential you provide them the tools to do this easily and accurately (e.g. a spread sheet or online calculator). I have done this very successfully a number of times where I sold large-ticket equipment to businesses that were hundred of thousands of dollars more expensive than a competitor’s offering. In every case, the product was genuinely better for their operations and I was able to provide them unequivocal mathematic evidence of this, using their actual input variables and to project the resultant savings they would enjoy over the next months and years. What initially looked to them like an overpriced offer ended up becoming a purchase they simply could not do without. Every sale I presided over went through. Building relationships with key customers Your sales staff should be investing in customers at a genuine level and show interest in the personal lives of the buyers they come to know (e.g. remembering birthday, enquiring about kids’ progress etc.) Good account management Integration of sales into the marketing function (keeps sales staff more up to date with market trends, gives buyers a greater sense that your organisation is a market leader) Develop a documented account management plan that includes all customers (don’t allow a haphazard approach to customer care as it will alienate customers and cause sales atrophy) Reduce entry friction wherever possible and build maximum exit barriers for customer growth and retention.       00000084 0000009A 000082E2 000082F3 0028B397 0028B397 00007E63 00007EC0 0028B292 0028B1DB

Hannah Papp has truly lived by the premise that life is research for your novel. Seeking her own moveable feast, she embraced enterprise and experience from an early age.  As a teen, she tried her hand at proofing pastries in a bakery, pumping gas, waiting tables and even drove a backhoe on a construction site.  Never far from prose, in her twenties she worked for her university’s English Department and as Advertising Manager for an English language publication in Europe. While living abroad for several years during her mid-twenties, Hannah traveled extensively and documented her experiences in an endless stream of journals, on paper napkins and filling hard drives. These notes became the foundation stones for The Mystical Backpacker.   Learn more at www.inspiredconversations.net
