-Adam Popp is a 12-year combat veteran of the Air Force with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team leader. In 2007, while working to disarm a roadside bomb (IED) in Afghanistan, he was injured by a secondary IED resulting in the amputation of his right leg above the knee.-In the years following his injury, Adam endeavored to find meaning and purpose. Ultimately, he found that running, sports, and advocacy work was his path to fulfillment and self-actualization.-He is a seven-time Guinness World Record holder, became the first above-knee amputee to complete a 100-mile ultramarathon within 30 hours in 2016, has five 100-mile finishes, and set an amputee record time of 16:13:43 for 100 miles in 2024. He won the 2024 Boston Marathon's Para Elite division and set a world best of 3:08:52 at the London Marathon six days later. He saw the myriad ways that people handled the process of recovery, many using sport to not only overcome their new adversity, but to rise to a higher level of functioning in the aftermath of trauma. By the end of his stay at Walter Reed Medical Center, he made a pledge to himself that he would utilize his experience, understanding, and compassion to help others overcome their individual physical and emotional challenges to reach their maximum potential.-He completed a Master's degree in Rehabilitation and Clinical Counseling from George Washington University and a second master's degree in Sport & Performance Psychology from the University of Denver. On episode twenty-three of Mindful Warrior Radio, I am joined by Suzi Landolphi, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with extensive experience working with veterans. Most recently, Suzi worked as a Senior PATHH Guide at Boulder Crest Retreat (BCR) in Bluemont, Virginia, a privately funded retreat for combat veterans, their families, and first responders. Suzi is one of the co-creators of BCR's signature program: Progressive and Alternative Training for Healing Heroes (PATHH). PATHH is the nation's first curriculum-based retreat with eighteen months of follow-up support based on the science of Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG). Suzi's understanding of and expertise in childhood trauma and it effects on adult development is a cornerstone of the success of the PATHH program. In addition to BCR, Suzi has consulted for The Wounded Warrior Project, Save A Warrior, Veterans 360, The EOD Warrior Foundation, Operation Mend, and Team Rubicon. She is also on the Advisory Board of Merging Vets and Players (MVP), an organization dedicated to connecting and supporting elite athletes and veterans. In 2007, Suzi founded BIG Heart Ranch and Farm (BHR) in Malibu, California she works with clients of all ages to form deep connections with animals to facilitate healing from the effects of trauma. While managing BHR, Suzi also developed an equine therapy model called Horse Inspired Growth and Healing (HIGH) which includes both ground and mounted activities to nurture healing through trauma and to support holistic wellness. In addition, Suzi was the first Clinical Director of Alo House Recovery Centers, a progressive strengths-based, dual-diagnosis treatment community with facilities in Malibu and Los Angeles. Alo and Suzi continue to support veterans and first responders by creating new treatment programs housed at a working horse ranch. Before becoming a licensed therapist, Suzi received a BA in Theater from Middlebury College and worked as a theater, video, and film producer/director. She hosted her own television and radio programs in Los Angeles and is a frequent guest on national talk shows, including The Oprah Winfrey Show.Suzi and I talked about managing life transitions, the connection between self-confidence and self-value, how our childhood impacts every part of our adult lives, how to mitigate triggers and emotions, the role that animals–and horses, in particular–play in healing, the importance of trusting your spirit rather than your thoughts and feelings, and the power of sharing your spirit with others.Suzi talks about the power of self-value: “Confidence comes from value. If your value is about winning, if your value is about the uniform, if your value is about your title and the people you hang out with and then all of that is gone, then most of your value is what you do and not who you are.”Suzi reflects on the human spirit: “Spirit is the basis of our principles. It shouldn't be our thoughts. It shouldn't be our feelings. I may be the only therapist who says I don't give a shit about your thoughts, and I don't give a shit about your feelings. I care what you do! And spirit is ‘do.' It's what you do! It's how you walk the surface. It's what you say. It's who you are with. It's how you are with yourself and others. That is spirit.”To learn more about Mindful Warrior and Mindful Warrior Radio please follow us on Instagram @therealmindfulwarrior and check out our website at www.mindfulwarrior.com

Ken is now helping veterans and civilians alike who are suffering from PTSD --- in other words, numerous challenges that can be given one of many different names, such as anxiety, depression, addiction, even cancer a car accident or the like. After retiring from the Navy in 2002, Ken started and later sold A-T Solutions, a counter-terrorism company. Ken Falke, the Chairman and Founder of Boulder Crest and the EOD Warrior Foundation, and Josh Goldberg, the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Boulder Crest Institute for Posttraumatic Growth, co-wrote a book called “Struggle Well: Thriving in the aftermath of Trauma” last May. Since then, Struggle Well has been spreading all over the nation. Now, these two mental health innovators decided to take the message further and launch the Struggle Well Podcast, supported by the Mental Health News Radio Network. Listen to Ken and Josh talk about their journey from Boulder Crest Retreat to the launch of the podcast and what it’s all about.
Every job in the military has it's negatives, but even with the high risk involved, many civilians look back on their lives wishing they'd served their country in some capacity. They often glamorize titles like Sniper or Medic, but I don't think anyone would envy the title of Mortuary Affairs Marine. However, that is the job that was given to L. Christian Bussler, and many of the horrors serving in that position followed him after his military career, leading him to drink, and desiring a permanent end to his life. Needing a therapeutic outlet, at the advice of an older combat veteran, Chris started writing, eventually leading to his self-published memoir last year, "No Tougher Duty, No Greater Honor." The book documents Chris being raised in a military household, pursuing a career in the Marines, and the unexpected turn of events when the country went to war during his service. A lot of tragedy endures as you could imagine, but as you hear him speak about in this interview, through the honor he had for the job, he finds a way to pay tribute to fellow service members that has continued to live on. A portion of the proceeds for the book and audio book go to benefit great charities like EOD Warrior Foundation, Semper Fi Fund, and WWIA. EOD Warrior Foundation helps the men and women who save lives by performing the military’s scariest job.
Episode 322 with SGM Mike Vining was one of our most well-received shows to date, and we promised a part two that many of you have been anticipating heavily. As promised, we delivered, and went very in-depth with one of the true pioneers of Army special operations. We pick up right where we left off and dive into SGM Vining's military career after Vietnam. We cover operations Mike was a part of in Grenada, Beirut, Haiti, Iran, and Kuwait. Some heroic stories of guys he served with, as well as some tragic stories, and Mike's take on the rise of IEDs being used to kill our warriors in combat. You'll also get a few laughs as well though, when you hear about Mike's childhood background that was sure to lead to a career as an EOD technician. Mike is currently travelling the country with his wife and enjoying some great outdoor adventures. He does some excellent work with the National EOD Association and EOD Warrior Foundation. We're also excited to hear that SGM Vining will be inducted into the U.S. Army Ordnance Hall of Fame in Fort Lee, Virginia on May 1st, 2018. The following Saturday, May 5th this year marks National EOD Day, and Mike is pleased to announce that there will be no new names added to their memorial this time. Ken Falke, Founder of the EOD Warrior Foundation, discusses life as a Navy bomb specialist and how it led him on a path to helping veterans with psychological trauma from explosive devices. He shares his intimate understanding of what it’s like to hold one of the most dangerous jobs in the military and the therapeutic resources needed for these people. With up to thirty-percent of veterans suffering from PTSD symptoms it’s clearly a crisis that needs to be addressed. As discussed in the episode, the military does an excellent job in training service members on active duty and how to regulate the mind and body while on the battlefield. However, where services seem to fall short is in the aftermath. When things go “wrong” and a service member needs support for psychological trauma their options are very limited to modalities that don’t show high levels of efficacy or patient follow-through. Ken will share about another way of working with veterans who suffer from PTSD. The model he and his team developed relies heavily on coaching techniques and post-traumatic growth orientations. In this episode you’ll learn: How the military trains self-regulation How trauma stacks up in service members Why Vietnam POW's displayed fewer trauma symptoms than other veterans Clinical mistakes are made when over focusing on combat An inspiring story of a quadriplegic Visit www.higherpractice.com/podcast to get the show notes and to learn more about Ken Falke.
Partner marketing focuses on communicating value to, with and through resellers, distributors, alliance partners, agents and other third-type companies to help market and promote your organization. No matter what you offer, when it comes to partner marketing, there are two important questions that all parties need to answer: What's in it for them and why should they care? In this week's episode of The Brand Ambassadors, Merritt and Gary welcome Boulder Crest and EOD Warrior Foundation chairman and founder Kenneth Falke and Leon Tackitt, owner of Tackitt Family Vineyards. As retired Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians, Ken and Leon have a passion for helping fellow combat veterans and their families deal with the issues surrounding long-term care and emotional support of returning military personnel and their families from the last 16 years of war. They will discuss how partnering their very different companies has increased brand awareness of both organizations.
SGM Mike Vining is a man who has been there, done that, and lived to tell about it. From attending OTC Class #1 (the first ever Operators Training Course for Army Delta Force) to being a part of the failed Iran hostage rescue mission Operation Eagle Claw, Desert One which resulted in the death of eight Air Force and Marine Corps crewmen, Vining has some very rich history that operators of today have benefited from tremendously. We also get into Vining's job as a bomb disposal technician during Vietnam, and the story of him watching the demise of his teammate Sgt. Maj. Kenneth Foster in his heroic attempt to defuse a bomb during a rally featuring then Vice Presidential candidate Bob Dole at a rally taking place at an Illinois high school. These stories may be heartbreaking, but it's great to see that Vining is in great condition himself and in good spirits. He currently does work for the National EOD Association as well as the EOD Warrior Foundation, and enjoys traveling across the country with his wife. On this episode we also check your emails sent to sofrep.radio@sofrep.com, and answer an interesting question from an Australian listener about secrecy (or lack thereof) in the SOF community. We also Throat Punch an idiot by the name of Gregory Salcido, as he used the platform he holds as a high school teacher as his soapbox to disgrace the U.S. military. You'll also hear Jack's recap of SHOT Show, as well as the Women's March, and you won't want to miss that. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers
