WARNING: Explicit language throughout this episode. Do not listen with children around.   Tisha is running late. Damo had a few drinks. Damon will be the “Designated Driver' for this ride! The guys get caught up on why they've been missing for a few weeks. Spoiler Alert: Blame Damon. Haha. Are HTs the DCs big bros? Recruiters were ordered to work 6 days a week but that was quickly shut down. A Class “C” fire was recently reported on the USS Abraham Lincoln, but why? Should rank “have its privileges”? Damo has an update (and more jokes) about the CMDCM that told his command to “clap like you're in a strip club.” Is the “Division in the Spotlight” program necessary or a waste of time? Damon asks when will we have a woman be selected as the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy? Should 100% disability be awarded to every veteran that served over 20 years? The crew talks about their initial experiences when they checked into their first ships and walked into berthings for the first time. This leads to a conversation about women vs men berthing cleanliness. Damo reflect on his “shart” story. Is there a such thing as “too much liberty”? A 14 year old girl was found in a Marine barracks on Camp Pendleton. The family is alleging a human trafficking attempt. The opposition is claiming that she lied about her age. A Sailor was caught trying to engage in sexual relations with a minor. An armed Navy veteran was recently arrested near the Obama's home. These topics and more are covered in this episode. The gang kicks off this episode with a quick “Wellness Check.” It's been a while since the team connected so Damon, Damo, and Tisha all get caught up on each other's Valentine's Days. The NAVADMINs for CMDCM and CMDCS and CWO/LDO were released. Congrats to everyone that was selected. The Army's “first full time rap artists just started basic training” but what do we think about it? Can you be a stripper and/or have an OnlyFans account if you're in the Military? This leads to a story about a Command Master Chief that stepped down from his role after receiving some backlash for trying to be just a little too cool. More objects have been seen in the sky. Are we taking these reports seriously? The DoD released a warning against poppy seed intake due to traces of codeine in multiple servicemember's urinalysis results. Is “physical fitness” in the Navy becoming less of a priority than ever before? NAVADMIN 042/23 is discussed. A larger conversation about leadership responsibility, personal responsibility, and overall health gets a deep dive. Another discuss about “EPs,” Damo plays “Devil's Advocate” on a few takes. How far away are we from an African American and/or woman Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy. The crew discusses maintaining personal relationships with your family while being in the Military. Dr. Vince Patton served as the Eighth Master Chief Petty Officer (a combination of a rank and a position) of the Coast Guard for more than 30 years until his retirement in 2002.As the service's top senior-ranking enlisted leader and ombudsman during that period, Master Chief Patton was the principal advisor to the Commandant of the Coast Guard, his directorates, and the secretaries of Transportation and Defense. Dr. Patton's primary focuses were on quality of life, career development, work environment, and personnel matters, which affected over 45,000 active duty, reserve, and civilian personnel service-wide. Dr. Patton received his Doctor of Education from the American University, Washington; a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Loyola University, Chicago; a Master of Theology from Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley; and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Pacific College, Angwin.Dr. Patton set his eyes on becoming the Coast Guard's Master Chief Petty Officer after two weeks in boot camp in Cape May, New Jersey. He drew strength and inspiration from Pelé's words, the legendary soccer player, who said, “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, but most of all, love of what you're doing or learning to do.” In 1976, during his journey climbing the ranks, Dr. Patton took a Dale Carnegie class that helped him improve his confidence, communicate better, and discover his core values and vision. He is delighted that Dale Carnegie became a stepping stone to leadership and is still ongoing today. And he now understands what a good foundation this program is in helping individuals in their leadership journey & developing their personal philosophies.Dr. Patton had a communication problem and overcame his stuttering by singing the Star-Spangled Banner every day. That gave him renewed confidence to sing out loud, to read articles and books out loud, and helped him become an influential leader in the U.S. Coast Guard. When Dr. Patton finally reached his goal of becoming a Chief Petty Officer, he realized his job was a privilege and served multiple purposes. The best way to describe it is that he was a cheerleader, a consultant, an advisor, and a chaplain, and heard all kinds of things from people in terms of what's needed in the service. The experience also helped Dr. Patton develop his core values centered on people, passion, and performance. Our capabilities and ability to handle responsibilities start with our core values. We are where we are today because we stood on somebody's shoulders. And wherever we are heading, we need to give back.Join us to learn how to be better, do better, and excel in order to mentor other people to be the best they can be.Listen to leadership and communication insights from Doug Escher, President of  Dale Carnegie Rochester, NY, Boston, MA, and Buffalo, NY.

It is SO impressive what The Boulder Crest Foundation and The Boulder Crest Institute are doing for our Combat Veterans to help them heal from traumas. Their work is groundbreaking and it's working! The focus is on the teachings of posttraumatic growth. Ken Falke, Founder & Chairman of Boulder Crest, is a 21-year combat veteran of the U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) community and retired Master Chief Petty Officer. He believes there's no greater mission than helping Veterans, first responders, and their families rediscover hope, purpose, and a future that is truly worth living. It's his passion. He spends the majority of his time educating the public and private sectors on the issues surrounding the long-term care of our returning military personnel and their families from the last 20 years of war. Ken is excited about the breakthrough success he's seeing at Boulder Crest, and says this is the coolest thing he's ever worked on and he's worked on some pretty cool things. Ken is highly respected around the world as an innovative and forward-thinking leader on the subjects of wounded warrior care, military and veteran transition, counterterrorism, military training, and innovative technology development. I'm so honored to be able to shine a light on Ken Falke and Boulder Crest this Veterans Day and every day. To help transform 'struggle to strength', Boulder Crest offers 2 peaceful locations for struggling veterans to come spend a week, spend quality time, be embraced, understood and heal. One location is in Bluemont, VA and the other in Sonoita, Arizona. Plus they offer many other programs across the country where those who are struggling can get the quality help they need to find the path to a life worth living. Their efforts are working. The Boulder Crest locations feature things like ADA-accessible cabins with plenty of amenities for comfort and for families to join in. Therapeutic and recreational activities like equine, archery, art, music, labyrinth walks, and fishing. And optional organized group activities, like barbecues and bonfires, which create opportunities for guests to connect with, and draw strength from, one another in what they've coined as a 'warrior's paradise'. The Boulder Crest Institute, located in Bluemont VA,  serves as the hub for the development, delivery, study, and scaling of their groundbreaking, Posttraumatic Growth-based programs. The Institute led the development of the Warrior PATHH curriculum, which is now delivered in nine locations across the country: Boulder Crest Virginia, Boulder Crest Arizona, Boulder Crest's Mobile Training Team, and through partnerships in Florida (GratitudeAmerica), Georgia (Camp Southern Ground), South Carolina (Big Red Barn Retreat), Maine (Travis Mills Foundation), Arkansas (Sheep Dog Impact Assistance), and Washington State (Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation). The Institute is also currently leading programs in Miami, Florida and Tucson, Arizona, to integrate Struggle Well Training and Posttraumatic Growth into their police departments. This project is made possible by the support of the FirstNet by AT&T, the Gary Sinise Foundation, and the Community-Police Relations Foundation. Since the Institute's opening in January 2018, Boeing has been an invaluable strategic partner and supporter, enabling them to develop and deliver training on Posttraumatic Growth for the mental health community. Ken Falke and Boulder Crest Institute Co-Founder & Exec. Dir. Josh Goldberg, also co-authored a book that's taken the mental health world by storm. It's called "Struggle Well: Thriving in the Aftermath of Trauma."  It's changing the lives of Veterans, First Responders and anyone who's been worn down by 'struggling'.  "Struggle" the authors say, "is the story of every great leader, every great man, and every great woman. Through encountering obstacles, heroes are tested and forged into becoming the great, authentic human beings they are destined to be." I love this quote on their website:  " It's time to learn how to struggle well. Because struggle is a terrible thing to waste." Ken Falke and Josh Goldberg, the authors of Struggle Well, have trained more than 40,000 people in the principles and practices of how to Struggle Well. Boulder Crest Foundation is doing amazing work and would love your support. Here's where you can find out more about them and donate. And if you want to meet a real hero please take a few minutes to meet Ken Falke, Founder & Chairman Boulder Crest Foundation, in this warm podcast conversation from The Debbie Nigro Show.  The world is a better place because of people like Ken Falke.

Today I had the pleasure of speaking with MCPOCG (Ret.) Vincent Patton III.  Master Chief Patton became the first African American selected as the Coast Guard's senior-most enlisted member as the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard in 1998. His career included staff and operational assignments both afloat and ashore throughout the United States, and a joint military service assignment in Cuba and Haiti.  Master Chief served as the eighth Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard from May 1998 to October 2002. As the service's top senior enlisted leader and ombudsman, he was the principal advisor to the Commandant of the Coast Guard, his directorates, and the Secretaries of Transportation and Defense.  During this conversation I spoke with Master Chief Patton about his Coast Guard career, his time as a recruiter in Detroit, his leadership philosophy, how he earned his Jump Wings, and what it meant to him to become the first African American Coast Guard member to be selected as the Master Chief Petty Officer Of The Coast Guard.  I hope you all enjoy this discussion as much as I did and are able to take away some pretty inspiring parts of his story.  Thanks for listening. Legal Disclaimer:As a reminder, the views, information, or opinions expressed during this podcast series are solely those of the individuals involved and do not represent those of the United States Coast Guard or any other government agency. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE RUSSIAN INFORMATION OPERATIONS CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE UNITED STATES AND ABOUT MALCOLM NANCE, A SPECIALIST ON INTELLIGENCE, TERRORISM, NATIONAL SECURITY AND THE RUSSIAN ATTACK ON AMERICA. Today we’re coming to you from beautiful Belmont University where we’re talking with Malcolm Nance, career Navy man, counter-terrorism and national security specialist, author and expert on the Russian information warfare campaign being waged against the United States. There could be no more timely conversation just as headlines focus on a new effort by Vladimir Putin and Russia, to deflect blame for its information campaign against the 2016 election. We will unpack Russian information operations with Nance whose books, public speaking and television appearances have earned him recognition as an expert on the subject. But first we’re going to talk with him about his background, Navy service, and work in intelligence and national security that led him to getting inside the Russian attack on America. Mr. Nance hails from a family rich with military tradition, traced back to a great grandfather and grand uncle who escaped slavery and joined a regiment of the Federal Colored Troops in Tennessee. Nance chose the Navy like his father, a career Master Chief Petty Officer and was trained as a linguist in the Cryptologic community – the Navy’s elite group that exploits adversaries’ communications. He became an expert in Russian Cold War military and intelligence activities and in the Arab world. Nance retired after 20 years and promotions to Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer. Among his post-military pursuits was work in preparing Navy special operations forces, SEALs and others, in methods to endure captivity at the hands of a new class of enemies like Al Qaeda militants. He also worked in security and intelligence activities in Iraq after the 2003 U.S. invasion. Along the way he became an expert on extremist threats in Iraq and literally wrote the book on ISIS producing a handbook that became a counter-terrorism bible. Nance’s research and writing about ISIS’ use of electronic media led to his dive into what was to emerge as a wide-ranging Russian information warfare capability and campaign. In the months leading to the 2016 presidential election Nance knocked out a book called, “The Plot to Hack America.” It was written and released in the same timeframe as the U.S. Intelligence Community’s analysis of the Russian support for the Trump campaign and eventual public statement charging Moscow with an attack on America’s elections. What followed? What is the story of Nance’s relentless analysis and speaking out? That’s what we’re getting into today with Malcolm Nance – Navy leader, intelligence and national security expert, author, commentator. This Episode is brought to you by In this Episode of the Hangar Deck Podcast, the team interviews the 9th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, MCPON Jim Herdt.  We discuss his time as the Command Master Chief or CMC of the Aircraft Carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71).  This interview is by far our best work and we appreciate his stories and memories. Jim Herdt  is the CEO of Herdt Consulting, Inc.  Jim transitioned from active duty in April 2002 with 35 years of active naval service.  He served the last four years of his active service as the most senior enlisted member of the United States Navy.  As such, his responsibilities included leading program and policy development for an enlisted force of over 400,000 personnel.  Additionally, he served as a personal advisor to the Chief of Naval Operations, Secretary of the Navy, Secretary of Defense and U.S. Congress on all U.S. Navy personnel policies. This is an awesome and inspiring conversation from MCPON Herdt and he takes a trip back in time to the early to mid 90s in the US Navy and onboard a Nimitz Class Carrier.  Raging Rick, Fast Eddie and myself had a great time with Jim and we hope you continue to enjoy our stories and interviews. The Hangar Deck Podcast would like to thank our audience for the continued support on our venture.  We reached a milestone of over 6,000 downloads and continue to grow our audience.  If you would like to be a guest on The Hangar Deck Podcast contact us at .  The Hangar Deck Podcast Team continues to strive and bring great interviews for the aviation enthusiast.
