Military personnel and first responders show up to other people's worst day, every day. Exposed to workplace experiences the rest of us can't imagine, some experience post-traumatic stress, and some work through that experience to demonstrate post-traumatic growth. Can yoga play a part in biasing these populations toward growth? Today's guest, Dr. Nicole McKenna, is here to share her thoughts on the topic. Dr. McKenna has a Ph.D. in Forensic Psychology with a concentration in crisis response and is also a Yoga Medicine Therapeutic Specialist. She started her working life in the military as an Army Master Fitness Trainer and now blends her fields of experience and expertise to help military personnel, veterans and first responders manage the physical and psychological impacts of their work. In this episode, she and host Rachel discuss post-traumatic stress and its symptoms along with tips for working with veterans and first responders. Show Notes:  CAPT Brent & Nicole Breining, USN (Ret.), return to the podcast today to continue our series on pornography and sexuality. If you haven't listened to the first two episodes in this series, I encourage you to check out those episodes first, get to know Brent and Nicole's story, then return to hear today's episode as we explore the concept of betrayal trauma in the context of marriage and romantic relationships.  In this episode, we discuss how the symptoms and effects of betrayal trauma present uniquely in different individuals, then Brent and Nicole share their personal experiences with betrayal trauma. The Breinings remind us that this betrayal trauma falls under the category of inevitable struggles Jesus promised we'd face in this life, but they remind us of our hope we have in Him.   Check out the various resources mentioned throughout this episode:  Your Sexually Addicted Spouse: How Partners Can Cope and Heal by Dr. Barbara Steffens  Struggle Well by Ken Falke and Josh Goldberg   Pure Desire Ministries, through which Brent and Nicole help men and women heal from unwanted sexual behaviors and their repercussions    If you would like to share your own story, complete the form on OCF's “Be a Guest” webpage. Alternatively, if you have an idea for a guest or topic I should consider for a future episode of the show, send an email to podcast@ocfusa.org.  As you listen to this conversation with Brent and Nicole, here are a few questions to ponder in your personal time, with a small group, or with a mentor:  Have you experienced hurt that has prompted you to question God's goodness? How did you work through that doubt?  How might a desire for control over your own life be connected to betrayal trauma?  How do traumatic experiences shake your understanding of your core beliefs?  What is the value of processing past traumatic experiences to better understand your reactions to present circumstances that might result in trauma?  Nicole shares several things she found helpful in her recovery from betrayal trauma: finding community she could trust, practicing self-care, educating herself about sexual addiction and betrayal trauma, not rushing into big decisions when working through betrayal trauma, and creating boundaries for safety. What practical ways within those categories might you be able to work through or help a loved one work through betrayal trauma?

It is SO impressive what The Boulder Crest Foundation and The Boulder Crest Institute are doing for our Combat Veterans to help them heal from traumas. Their work is groundbreaking and it's working! The focus is on the teachings of posttraumatic growth. Ken Falke, Founder & Chairman of Boulder Crest, is a 21-year combat veteran of the U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) community and retired Master Chief Petty Officer. He believes there's no greater mission than helping Veterans, first responders, and their families rediscover hope, purpose, and a future that is truly worth living. It's his passion. He spends the majority of his time educating the public and private sectors on the issues surrounding the long-term care of our returning military personnel and their families from the last 20 years of war. Ken is excited about the breakthrough success he's seeing at Boulder Crest, and says this is the coolest thing he's ever worked on and he's worked on some pretty cool things. Ken is highly respected around the world as an innovative and forward-thinking leader on the subjects of wounded warrior care, military and veteran transition, counterterrorism, military training, and innovative technology development. I'm so honored to be able to shine a light on Ken Falke and Boulder Crest this Veterans Day and every day. To help transform 'struggle to strength', Boulder Crest offers 2 peaceful locations for struggling veterans to come spend a week, spend quality time, be embraced, understood and heal. One location is in Bluemont, VA and the other in Sonoita, Arizona. Plus they offer many other programs across the country where those who are struggling can get the quality help they need to find the path to a life worth living. Their efforts are working. The Boulder Crest locations feature things like ADA-accessible cabins with plenty of amenities for comfort and for families to join in. Therapeutic and recreational activities like equine, archery, art, music, labyrinth walks, and fishing. And optional organized group activities, like barbecues and bonfires, which create opportunities for guests to connect with, and draw strength from, one another in what they've coined as a 'warrior's paradise'. The Boulder Crest Institute, located in Bluemont VA,  serves as the hub for the development, delivery, study, and scaling of their groundbreaking, Posttraumatic Growth-based programs. The Institute led the development of the Warrior PATHH curriculum, which is now delivered in nine locations across the country: Boulder Crest Virginia, Boulder Crest Arizona, Boulder Crest's Mobile Training Team, and through partnerships in Florida (GratitudeAmerica), Georgia (Camp Southern Ground), South Carolina (Big Red Barn Retreat), Maine (Travis Mills Foundation), Arkansas (Sheep Dog Impact Assistance), and Washington State (Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation). The Institute is also currently leading programs in Miami, Florida and Tucson, Arizona, to integrate Struggle Well Training and Posttraumatic Growth into their police departments. This project is made possible by the support of the FirstNet by AT&T, the Gary Sinise Foundation, and the Community-Police Relations Foundation. Since the Institute's opening in January 2018, Boeing has been an invaluable strategic partner and supporter, enabling them to develop and deliver training on Posttraumatic Growth for the mental health community. Ken Falke and Boulder Crest Institute Co-Founder & Exec. Dir. Josh Goldberg, also co-authored a book that's taken the mental health world by storm. It's called "Struggle Well: Thriving in the Aftermath of Trauma."  It's changing the lives of Veterans, First Responders and anyone who's been worn down by 'struggling'.  "Struggle" the authors say, "is the story of every great leader, every great man, and every great woman. Through encountering obstacles, heroes are tested and forged into becoming the great, authentic human beings they are destined to be." I love this quote on their website:  " It's time to learn how to struggle well. Because struggle is a terrible thing to waste." Ken Falke and Josh Goldberg, the authors of Struggle Well, have trained more than 40,000 people in the principles and practices of how to Struggle Well. Boulder Crest Foundation is doing amazing work and would love your support. Here's where you can find out more about them and donate. And if you want to meet a real hero please take a few minutes to meet Ken Falke, Founder & Chairman Boulder Crest Foundation, in this warm podcast conversation from The Debbie Nigro Show.  The world is a better place because of people like Ken Falke.

I have created a wellness course based on a healing framework that I would like to reach the families and friends of veterans. Eventually I would like to help people from all areas of trauma and struggle not just our veteran families. What were some small shifts in your mindset that you started doing to help get you to where you are today?: Well there is definitely a turning point when I started to educate myself on post traumatic growth. That has helped me to identify different ways to get more in touch with myself, practice mindfulness, and a whole lot of self-care. What breakthroughs have you had in life?: I would say the last year and a half there has been a number of breakthroughs. One of the first would be suffering from a head injury in February 2020 which then led to a rough recovery. Once identified that I was not in a good place emotionally, I knew I had to do something to get out of my funk. So from there I decided to get back to writing and write the book I told myself I would write for 16 years. I did just that but along with it came more breakthroughs with my own personal development as well as healing between myself and my husband who is also a combat veteran. Leaders are readers. What was a book that assisted you in life or is your "go to" for motivation/inspiration?: Struggle Well:Thriving in the Aftermath of Trauma by Ken Falke and Josh Goldberg --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/forginglife/message

Camaraderie comes in many forms, from combat deployment to live-fire ranges, or field exercises. To ruck marches to morning PT sessions and back-to-back hour-long death by Powerpoint mandatory annual training. Service members almost always had a battle buddy there soldiering through it together. But, civilian life is much different and for some of us, the loneliness and lack of connectivity with others make even the most mundane aspects of life sometimes hard to bear. That is why there are many on this side of the DD-214 who have dedicated themselves to walking side-by-side with veterans through thick and thin, ready to encourage and help bring restoration to our warrior spirit. We speak with three men who have dedicated themselves to that cause today. During this episode of the #StillServing podcast, Host Rob Couture speaks with Stuart Taylor, President & CEO of the Allied Forces Foundation who describes the challenging, yet rewarding events his charity puts on for veterans from both sides of the pond. Ken Faulk, Founder and Chairman of the Bouldercrest Foundation, talks about his retreat setting in Northern Virginia and how it's helping veterans and their families cope with past traumas and feel whole again. She currently lives in Cary, NC for her job with BAE Systems, Inc where she works as a software trainer, technical support, and a Jane of all trades in the GEOINT (Geospatial Intelligence) community. Erika attended the Warrior PATHH program at Boulder Crest Virginia in October of 2019 and is a proud member of WP class 072 (Valkyrie). She actually put off attending the program for over a year & a half because she felt there were other vets who needed it more than her, but thanks to the gentle persistence of Joe Wood, she relented. Today she readily admits that she needed the program more than she realized & that self-care is NOT selfish, but necessary.Erika’s biggest personal accomplishment this year was being able to be her mother’s primary caregiver in her last chapter of life. Throughout the year Erika shared her journey through public posts on Instagram & Facebook in hopes of reaching people who are either in similar situations or may be in the future. Her goal was to help just one person, but now she has expanded that goal to reach as many as possible. She is working on a YouTube series about being a primary caregiver & is also in the very early stages of writing a book on the same topic.www.strugglewell.comwww.bouldercrest.org

Lenora Turner interviews Ken Falke, 21 year Navy veteran, entrepreneur, author of Struggle Well and founder of Bouldercrest.org. Many are familiar with PTSD and the intense challenges that can follow the aftermath of trauma but too few know of the hope that can be found in Post Traumatic Growth. After extensive research and disappointing data on the mental health treatments for PTSD, Ken came upon the research of Dr. Rich Tadeschi and Post Traumatic Growth. From there he began a partnership to document and scale what has been discovered through those who've gone on to thrive after trauma. Boulder Crest foundation locations in Virginia and Arizona have been the proving ground to test and improve the program and now Bouldercrest Institute can equip others in the methodology to scale this effective program to countless other locations. The interview and conversation is honest and brings awareness to the low percentage of success until this proven program approach. You'll want to get the book "Struggle Well" and share this information with veterans and first responders struggling with PTS or PTSD.Visit Bouldercrest.org for more information and to discover new hope for a future where individuals and their families can learn to thrive after trauma. This video is from "3Ps In A Pod" Episode 10, a podcast hosted by Lenora, daughter of a Korean War veteran and program Director for youth and veterans at a Fortune 500 company. Ken Falke and Josh Goldberg train combat veterans battling PTSD to understand and achieve Post Traumatic Growth PTG. When we are struggling we are not living the life we desire or deserve. There is hope. This book teaches us the ability to embrace struggle so we stop surviving and start thriving. PTG Post Traumatic Growth enables us to use times of struggle to create a life that is more meaningful, fulfilling, and purposeful. This book provides actionable strategies for making peace with your past, living in the present. and planing for a great future. LET'S TURN STRUGGLE INTO STRENGTH AND GROWTH. Struggle Well. OVERVIEW Sometimes things are going to be bad. If the title resonates with you. chances are you are going through a struggle. If you are seriously struggling: REMEMBER Struggle can produce profound gifts, if you can struggle well. Step by step journey based on research and experience working with veterans and military family members who had PTSD. Inspired by Tedeschi who coined the term Postraumatic Growth, who emphasized that people could find meaning, purpose and significance even out of the worst tragedies. PTSD shouldn't be a disorder that follows you around for the rest of your life.  PTSD is like driving slow while looking in your rear view mirrors straight to your garage. EG Ferrari. PTG is like being in the drivers seat, looking out the front windshield, pressing the gas and being in the moment. People want fulfilment and connection. They want purpose and progress. They want growth, love and peace. Making PTG happen we must understand that everyone struggles. Bad things happen, but what distinguishes the people who grow and prosper is the fact art they're not afraid to struggle. They embrace struggle because they know it's inevitable and even useful. Trauma is nearly universal, PTG teaches us that it's what we choose to learn from our struggle that matters. Life is going to slap us in the face, maybe even punch you. You can choose to react negatively, or you can choose to respond positively. TURNING STRUGGLE INTO STRENGTH. Why Listen Well, this is the first interview I’ve done with a vineyard owner, and the first interview I’ve done with the owner of a wellness retreat for Veterans. These are both great resources and career overview for listeners, but Leon and Ken cover so much more ground. They both served in Explosive Ordinance Disposal while in the military. They have some incredible nuggets of wisdom about doing your job better rather than looking for a better job, and how work-life balance doesn’t exist. Prepare to be motivated, because Ken and Leon make for an incredible combination of wisdom in this episode.    About Ken & Leon Ken Falke is Chairman of Boulder Crest Retreat for Military and Veteran wellness, which is a free, first-class rural wellness retreat for America’s military members, veterans and their families to recover from visible and invisible wounds by providing rest and reconnection time, reintegration training, and world-class combat stress recovery programming. He also serves as the Chairman of the EOD Warrior Foundation. He served in the US Navy for over 21 years, retiring as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Master Chief Petty Officer. He has also served as the CEO and Founder of A-T Solutions, and the CEO and Co-Founder of Shoulder 2 Shoulder.    Leon Tackitt Started his career in Navy Search and Rescue as a helicopter aircrewman in the Anti-Submarine Warfare field. He transitioned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal in 1985 and rose to the rank of Senior Chief before he was commissioned as a Limited Duty Officer in 1998. He retired in 2007 as a Lieutenant Commander

On May 3, 2012, an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) detonated while Taylor was clearing a path into a building to provide his Special Forces A- team cover from enemy fire during a mission in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The blast took all four of Taylor’s limbs. Taylor spent two years of rehabilitation in the hospital and has an incredible positive outlook on his future. Taylor is a great example of posttraumatic growth and how he is able to keep pushing through when so many others might lose hope. Ken Falke, Founder of the EOD Warrior Foundation, discusses life as a Navy bomb specialist and how it led him on a path to helping veterans with psychological trauma from explosive devices. He shares his intimate understanding of what it’s like to hold one of the most dangerous jobs in the military and the therapeutic resources needed for these people.   With up to thirty-percent of veterans suffering from PTSD symptoms it’s clearly a crisis that needs to be addressed. As discussed in the episode, the military does an excellent job in training service members on active duty and how to regulate the mind and body while on the battlefield. However, where services seem to fall short is in the aftermath. When things go “wrong” and a service member needs support for psychological trauma their options are very limited to modalities that don’t show high levels of efficacy or patient follow-through. Ken will share about another way of working with veterans who suffer from PTSD. The model he and his team developed relies heavily on coaching techniques and post-traumatic growth orientations. In this episode you’ll learn: How the military trains self-regulation How trauma stacks up in service members Why Vietnam POW's displayed fewer trauma symptoms than other veterans Clinical mistakes are made when over focusing on combat An inspiring story of a quadriplegic Visit www.higherpractice.com/podcast to get the show notes and to learn more about Ken Falke.
