This week, I received a magazine from the Wisconsin Maritime Museum celebrating raising 9.5 million dollars to build a tower that houses all sorts of displays for the museum. This just happens to be the tower that my Dad designed and created when he was the President and Chairman of the Board. Until my Dad took that President's seat it was nothing more than a wish and he turned it into a reality. I started reading the names of the donors and I realized that my community had donated a ton of money cumulatively to my father's dream. This is the direct result of building a community of people around you — friends, family, and acquaintances — who work hard to put themselves in a financially advantageous place, then pay it forward without the expectation of anything back. IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT: Dedicating time and energy towards making other's lives better, and the ripple effect it causes for those to pay it forward making life better for others. Reminding you of my promise that I will always keep putting out tons of free content that will make your life better and easier The core of my message: When good people make good money, they can do great things. I really really think a lot of you are going to benefit from today's spiel. Last week I started reading a book called the Feel Good Effect by Robin Downs. And it's just a little baby book, something I found at one of our department stores. It was a short read but a GREAT reminder of those mindset tools I'm talking about all the time and kind of a wake up call to let go of my perfectionism/all-or-nothing thinking. All-or-nothing thinking is like believing if you can't do something 100%, sometimes even 1000%, then you can't do it at all and there is no in between. It's thinking in extremes, absolutes and contributes that perfectionism mindset. And I don't feel like I'm that way in my business, I'm pretty flexible and give myself grace there, but as I really started reading about it, I realized I am “all or nothing” in how I treat myself and talk to myself. I'm sure you can think of instances when you've let all or nothing thinking influence you, too. So forget about that perfectionism and needing to make a night and day difference. Just tackle one thing at a time and focus on being one percent better, not 100%, or even 1000% for you overachievers. What can you do today to be a little bit better than you were yesterday? I see this a lot with spending or exercising or eating healthy. I see people expecting to quit soda cold turkey, go to the gym every day and spend like nothing for a whole month. But guys, that doesn't work! And I bet you've tried the same, so you know it doesn't work either! So today I talk about how you can rework that all-or-nothing thinking to just being one percent better. I want to leave you with one last quote by Michael A. Dunn! “Every effort we make to change, no matter how tiny it is to us, just might make the biggest difference in our lives.” Remember! We are every other week these few months of summer. Not stopping, just slowing down because hello…SUMMER! But if there is a topic you want, or an area you feel like you need more information on, please reach out to me and I'll make sure I get it in an episode.

Mindset is essentially who we are. What we think, why we think and how we think define our daily wellbeing. They are of such importance that science and researches are constantly coming up with new information about the way our brain functions. But, what can we do to shift our mindset once we see a negative pattern happening? In which way we can impact and influence our behavior to match the positive life we know we can live? In this episode, Robyn Downs discusses some of the most important actions we can take to start feeling good. “When you feel good you can do the things that really matter in your life and then impact the world.” – Robyn Downs You will also learn about habit changing and the reasons why is easier to change ourselves than to expect different outcomes, how you can set goals for the next year in a more sustainable and attainable way (that actually works), and what are the 3 non-changing brain patterns that we need to be aware of in order to uncomplicate life and instigate success. Our ways of thinking end up being just little pieces that we, as rational individuals, must gather to solve the whole puzzle. Practices vs. Projects: consider what are the building blocks of your daily life as opposed to one-time tasks that will facilitate your daily practices. Back Up Plan: decide what are you base level things that you need to do even on the days when everything else falls apart. I feel truly inspired to share my new self-compassion practice. You know when something just hits you on the right day at the right time and it feels like you just stumbled in to your future??? As I continue on my personal growth and healing journey I have become more and more open to new ways of approaching the same problems and finding a lot of creative solutions. Self compassion feels like the next creative (yet logical and rooted in science) addition to my journey. I release the feelings of foolishness or vulnerability when I tell people "ya so, every morning I look in the mirror and tell myself that I am my own best friend". Nobody judges me more than me, and now I say enough. I deserve better. Between our ongoing commitments to work, family, and our seemingly never-ending list of obligations, it isn’t always easy to take care of ourselves. Especially since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us have felt at times like life is spiraling out of control. Thus, we could each benefit from a gentle reminder that we are all human and there are things we can do, each day, to regain control of our lives. Today, that reminder comes from Robyn Conley Downs. Robyn has been named one of “the most influential women in wellness” and is the author of The Feel Good Effect. After her daughter was born, and she struggled to keep up with the insane pace of a 60-hour-a-week job and a full-time doctoral program immediately, she developed the mindset and strategies to help herself get out of that place and focus on what really matters. For this episode, Robyn joins the podcast to talk about the importance of mindset and mindfulness, and breaks down her four-step process to transform your mindset and create healthy, lasting habits to help you bring the Feel Good Effect into your own life. Robyn Downs is the founder of the mission-driven media and education brand, Real Food Whole Life, creator of the Feel Good Effect Mindset & Method, and author of the upcoming book, The Feel Good Effect. Holding a Master’s degree in education with an emphasis in behavior change, and 4 years of public policy & health change at the doctoral level, her work taps into cutting edge science around mindset, strategies and habits; and how people create and sustain lasting wellness. She combines this professional research background with work as a certified yoga teacher, specializing in mindfulness and self-compassion, to share science-based, life-tested, radically simple solutions to help people feel good. When not writing or speaking, Robyn can be found behind the mic of her Apple-top rated Feel Good Effect podcast, in the kitchen creating simple real food recipes, hiking, reading, or practicing yoga. Recently named one of the Most Influential Women in Wellness, she lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband, Andrew, and their daughter Elle. So, I adore Robyn and this conversation. This woman is so incredibly humble and has accomplished SOOOO much in her professional life— most of all in her amazing business. I can’t wait for you to hear how she moved through her biggest insecurities to create a deeply aligned body of work. In this episode, she shares her past life in the academic world, the moment she woke up and realized she wasn’t happy with it, and why wellness felt like the perfect thing to pour her energy into, the ways she had to check her tendency to push and strive as she became a yoga and mindfulness teacher, upped her wellness routine, and more so that she didn’t burn out, her experience starting a food blog as an introvert and her struggle with putting herself out on social media, and how she was able to get past that barrier in order to have an authentic online presence, why neuroscience is such a big part of her approach to wellness and how taking action despite fear over and over again will quite literally change your brain, and shift your ability to do uncomfortable things more often, the journey busting her butt to build her blog to 1 million views per month, what it was like for her to realize she needed to pivot her content and business model away from only food, and how shifting resulted in a follower loss and why she was ok with that, why showing up as her true self, creating an aligned business, and putting herself out there is what ultimately got her an amazing book deal, and so much more! Are you a perfectionist? Do you have impossibly high standards for yourself or are you often comparing yourself to others? In this week's episode, we talk to the incredible Robyn Conley Downs about the problems of perfectionist thinking and how you can develop a kinder approach and mindset that helps you get results and feel good in the process. Robyn is a mother, author, podcaster and creator of the Feel Good Effect, and she's recently been named one of the most influential women in wellness. She has a Master's degree in education, with an emphasis on behavior change and she combines this research background with her work as a certified yoga teacher, specializing in mindfulness and self-compassion, to share science-based, simple solutions to help people feel good. We loved talking to Robyn about her wellness journey and hearing her practical tips for how you can feel better in your life. We discuss how perfectionism doesn't need to be a label that you over-identify with, it's simply an approach and a mindset that's unhealthy, and it's something you can change through simple practices - you really can rewire your brain! Robyn talks about the striving and comparison mindset versus the feel good mindset, and why learning to trust what feels good to you is one of the most self-loving things you can do. We talk about the fear many people have that if they're gentle and kind to themselves they won't be able to achieve their goals or be productive, and the fact that science has proven that the complete opposite is true. If you have a gentle and self-compassionate approach, you actually increase your chances of successful results and achieving your goals, in a consistent and sustainable way. Episode 069. "I had to be able to sit there in that uncomfortable place of this is not as good as I want it to be — and that's okay."~Robyn Conley Downs I discovered Robyn when she needed a podcast editor for her new show the Feel Good Effect. Robyn Downs is the researcher, educator, storyteller and mama behind her blog, Real Food Whole Life and The Feel Good Effect podcast! She is a working mom and a woman in the real world who is trying to balance the demands of her life with creating a healthy lifestyle for herself and her family. In this episode, Robyn shares her own personal journey to creating this healthy balance.
