Confidence is a word we hear often, but what does it really mean—and why is it so elusive? Psychologists suggest that up to 50% of the traits linked to confidence may be inherited, but genes are just one piece of the puzzle. Cultural influences, childhood experiences, societal pressures, and even the impact of social media shape how we see ourselves and how much we trust in our abilities. Add to that family expectations and media messages that fuel insecurities, and it's no wonder confidence feels out of reach for so many of us. True confidence isn't about arrogance or feeling superior. It's a quiet, secure belief in yourself and your capabilities. And while some people might find confidence comes naturally, for others, it takes intentional work. That's where guest, Minaa B., comes in. Minaa is a mental health educator, speaker, and author of the transformative book 'Owning Our Struggles: A Path to Healing and Finding Community in a Broken World'. She's also the founder of I'm So Mature, a media company blending pop culture, music, and personal healing. With over a decade of clinical experience, Minaa helps others cultivate confidence, self-care, and self-advocacy through the lens of boundaries and community care. In this episode, host Gabby Sanderson chats with Minaa about what it really takes to build confidence—and why it's something we must work at. Together, they explore how to recover when life knocks your confidence, build mental resilience, and set healthier boundaries in relationships. Minaa also explains why facing fear and taking risks are essential to personal growth and connection. Plus, Minaa breaks-down how we end up creating our own anxiety when we compare ourselves to others. Tune in for an inspiring conversation that's not just about confidence but about reclaiming your sense of self and finding the courage to be seen. Morgan kicks off the conversation by sharing her own experience battling mental health challenges and loneliness during the early days of Blavity, and Minaa explains the need for self-care as a preventative practice rather than a crisis response. They also explore the reality that sometimes it is necessary to shift things around and ask for help when you've met your capacity, which can feel particularly uncomfortable for Black leaders when Black culture is so closely tied to independence. The conversation moves to the distinction between genuine boundaries and "avoidance culture," a facade that often masks deeper emotional conflict. Minaa emphasizes the role of communication in collective healing, shedding light on the core premise of her book, "Owning Our Struggles," which focuses on healing from trauma through community care. To close things out, Minaa breaks down what the terms "gaslighting" and "narcissist" actually mean. If these are words you throw around casually, you'll want to listen up! She specializes in anxiety and depression, an understanding that's informed by her own experience with self-harm as a teen. We talk about the harsh environment she faced as a young person, challenged by cultural differences as her family gained footing in America after emigrating from Panama. We swap mother/daughter dynamics to illustrate shared experiences, and more importantly, a shared resolve to help others avoid our suffering. Zooming out from the past, we also spend some time in the present. Even as the panic of the pandemic has cooled, the psychological impact of the work-from-home model remains a serious one. Minaa points out how the extended isolation impacts our brains, and how lacking something as simple as a morning routine can uproot a person's sense of order.  Resources: Website: https://www.minaab.com/ (minaab.com) Writing: https://www.wellandgood.com/author/minaab/ (wellandgood.com/author/minaab) Follow Minaa on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/minaa_b/?hl=en (@minaa_b) Follow Minaa on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jessminaarchbold/ (linkedin.com/in/jessminaarchbold) Follow Minaa on LinkedIn: https://twitter.com/MinaaBe?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor (@MinaaBe) Read: https://thebigsilence.com/pages/memoir (The Big Silence: A Daughter's Memoir of Mental Illness and Healing)  Follow Karena Dawn on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/karenadawn (@karenadawn) Follow The Big Silence on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/The.Big.Silence (@The.Big.Silence) Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuKGS6i7GBq_Ydyj3jGO_fA (The Big Silence YouTube Channel) Donate to The Big Silence http://www.thebigsilence.com/donate (thebigsilence.com/donate) to be a part of the movement to break the silence and make noise with us! “The Big Silence” theme song written and performed by https://www.instagram.com/jamesnicholaskinney/ (James Nicholas Kinney). It's about realizing that we all live in this house and if we don't put up some sort of fence, then we're allowing people to just walk all over our property with no safeguard, with no rules in place. We have to identify how we want to interact. We all have our own value systems and own beliefs. 18:46: We first have to do the work of really sitting with ourselves and doing the healing, because remember what happened to you is not your fault, but you are responsible for your healing.22:07:  Experience is always your greatest teacher, but you have to be willing to look at the experience and say "What do want to take away from this? What do I want to change moving forward?"Dear Mind, You Matter is brought to you by NOBU, a new mental health, and wellness app. To download NOBU, visit the app store or Google Play. This podcast is hosted by Allison Walsh  and Dr. Angela Phillips. Today I’m having an incredible conversation with a very special guest: Minaa B. Minaa B., is a writer, wellness coach, therapist and mental health educator. With over eight years of clinical experience and a passion for both mental health and social justice, through writing, speaking, workshops and coaching, Minaa teaches people how to cultivate self-care and self-advocacy through the lens of boundaries and community-care.In this episode, we discuss how entrepreneurs can be more intentional about implementing better limits in their business, and overcome some of the unique challenges they face when it comes to setting boundaries. We discuss: Finding healing through our own experiencesHow community, self care, and boundaries work togetherUnique challenges entrepreneurs face when it comes to boundariesHow a scarcity mindset leads to burn outPowerful actions you can take to implement boundaries right awayHere are some highlights …Cultivating Community and Relationships.“At the end of the day, we can't pour from an empty cup. And so by having boundaries, it gives us an ability to replenish ourselves, and also have healthy limits in place only we can define what our limits are. That's no one else's responsibility to do that. So once we define our limits, we also have to pay attention to the things that drain us, of our peace that drains us, drains us from our energy. And so by doing that, we can now show up better for ourselves. And we can show up better for the people around us.” - Minaa B.“..I definitely believe that incorporating boundaries into how we build community, is how we are able to have a solid foundation of people in our lives.” -Minaa B.Being a chronic yes-er.“I find one area where entrepreneurs struggle, with boundaries is being a chronic yes-er, where they say anything that comes my way, I'm going to take it. And I'm going to do it because I need to keep my business afloat. And I think what ends up happening with that is we are saying yes to all of these things without really doing the work of understanding Well, one, is this within my niche, is this within my range? Is this something I actually have the the education, the skills and the time to do? And I think sometimes what we fear saying no, because we think that we are pushing away opportunities, and I think it's important for entrepreneurs to know that every opportunity that comes your way is not going to be for you, even if it's packaged and produced perfectly.” - Minaa B. Permission to say yes to yourself.“You have permission to say yes to yourself. Because I think sometimes we get so hyper focused on the fact that we're saying no to other people that we don't realize that we're doing that because we are saying yes to ourselves, we matter. Our health matters, our mental health matters, our well being matters, but only us, it's up to us to choose. And so I really want people to know that you have permission to choose yourself, you have permission to say yes to yourself, and what you need to do to take care of yourself, because chronic niceness only leads to self betrayal and self harm. You know, and so if being nice to others, causes you to betray yourself in the process where you're hurt, you're broke, you're tired, you're depleted, that is an act of self harm.” - Minaa B. To Connect with Minaa visit: https://www.minaab.com/

Hey fam and welcome to 2020 and a brand new episode of heart of Dating! We are dubbing 2020 as the year of walking in your worth, so with that being said how can we do that even better as singles? To start off this 2020 season, we are addressing a topic that comes up a ton. Today Kait invited her friend, and licensed social worker, Minaa B onto the podcast to have an honest conversation about friendationships and walking in your worth. Friendationships can happen when one or both parties form feelings for the other person, but the relationship has not been defined as more than a friendship. This can get messy and confusing and cause immense heartache… and both Kait and Minaa discuss candidly how to navigate them and embrace your worthiness. Minaa B. is a writer, author of the book Rivers Are Coming and a licensed social worker. She is passionate about all things mental health and self-care. When Minaa is not working with clients, she is spreading love and light on her mantra-filled Instagram account @minaa_b. We hope and pray that after today’s episode you will take a long and hard look at the relationships you have in your life with the opposite gender, and reflect on if that relationship is clearly defined and bringing you life, or if it is confusing and causing you anxiety or frustration. Some themes of today’s episode: -How to walk in your worth -What is a friendationship? -How to have boundaries in a friendationship -How to date with intention PS. If you’re interested in deeper relationship advice, our host Kait Warman offers 1 on 1 relationship coaching. We understand that every person’s dating history, and personal life history is different… which means that not one set of dating advice or encouragement can apply to us all. As such, it is Kait's honor and joy to walk alongside of individuals in their journey to help them create a VISION for their life in relationships as it comes to God, themselves, and lastly in dating. This week, I talk to Minaa B. She’s a licensed social worker, creative expressive coach, and author of the book Rivers Are Coming, a collection of essays and poems about healing from emotional trauma. You might know her for her Instagram account or her newsletter, but she’s just an incredible resource for therapy and mental health, and she’s helping to redefine what it means to use your degree in social work today. We talked a lot about what it’s like to put herself out there on Instagram as a credentialed expert vs. an influencer, and where she draws the line between free labor and marketing—especially with people sliding into her DMs to essentially get free therapy. And while I can’t say anyone’s trying to get free therapy from me, I do know what it’s like to have someone try to squeeze extra unpaid work out of me (not fun), and what it’s like to set boundaries with those people (not fun but worth it). So, even if you’re not in the mental health field, Minaa has so much freelance wisdom to share. Some other topics we talked about: How to maintain connections with people you’ve worked with, since they might help you get another opportunity down the line What social media burn out feels like, and how to combat it Why financial health is important for your mental health Note to self: Think of freelancing as an exercise in self-worth—and negotiate accordingly.
