Songwriter Lucy Dacus talks about her new album, Forever Is A Feeling. In conversation with Emily Fox, she discusses everything from love, lyricism, and making conscious decisions to step away from boygenius and her solo work to find balance and stillness. She also breaks down some of her favorite songs and lyrical moments on the new record. “I keep saying this, how you spend your time is how you spent your life. And that has been a really profound cliche to remember,” Dacus says. “You're in charge of your time more than you realize.”Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On her fourth solo album, “Forever Is a Feeling” (out March 28), Lucy Dacus contemplates the fears and delights that go along with falling hard for someone. The song “Best Guess” celebrates the leap of faith involved in committing to a partner with the knowledge that both of you will change over time. And in another track called “Talk,” a couple realizes they've grown apart because they have nothing more to say to each other. In this episode, Dacus reads Molly Pascal's Modern Love essay “How the ‘Dining Dead' Got Talking Again,” about a couple who sets out to bring conversation back into their marriage. And Dacus tells Anna Martin why she's not afraid to put in the work for long-term love.Lucy Dacus' fourth solo album, “Forever Is a Feeling,” is out March 28.Molly Pascal's essay can be found here. Here's how to submit a Modern Love essay to The New York Times. Here's how to submit a Tiny Love Story. In this episode, I sit down with Scott Snellings, who shares a deeply personal and professional story about reinvention, resilience, and creating meaningful success on his terms. We kick things off at Baylor University, where Scott initially set his sights on becoming a doctor. With a background in psychology and an EMT license under his belt, he seemed destined for medicine—until a D in Biology pushed him to rethink his path. This unexpected detour led him straight into the rigorous world of Baylor University School of Law, a completely different animal from any learning experience he'd encountered.Rather than chasing a niche specialization, Scott honed the meta-skill of learning itself—a decision that later became one of his biggest assets. His early interest in product liability landed him a role at Hartline, Dacus, Barger, Dreyer, and Kern, where he learned how to strategize, solve problems independently, and develop what he calls “the human side of the law.” Four years later, Scott decided it was time to bet on himself and open Snellings PLLC.But just two months into this new chapter, life threw him a curveball: he needed a kidney transplant. In a remarkable twist, his best friend turned out to be a perfect match. Scott returned to the firm with renewed energy and purpose, using his experience to shape a company culture grounded in core values and long-term vision. We also dive into The Driven Crowd Podcast, where Scott interviews high achievers to extract lessons on ambition, success, and personal growth. The podcast has not only enriched his personal development but has also become a powerful referral engine for his business. This conversation is more than just a career story—it's a masterclass in resilience, continuous learning, and building a life aligned with your values. Scott's journey from potential doctor to lawyer, through personal challenges and entrepreneurial success, is one you won't forget.Tune in to discover how setbacks can become turning points, and why core values are critical whether you're leading a law firm or hosting a podcast.Don't miss this episode—Scott's story will leave you inspired, motivated, and ready to tackle your own challenges head-on.Check out all of Scott's content, including his podcast and blog, below!Scott's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scott-snellingsScott's Podcast: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1945495Scott's Blog: https://snellingsinjurylaw.com/blog/Be sure to check out the Official Sponsors for the Lawyers in the Making Podcast:Rhetoric - takes user briefs and motions and compares them against the text of opinions written by judges to identify ways to tailor their arguments to better persuade the judges handling their cases. Woodlawn Giants. A story about a group of boys growing up in West Memphis, Arkansas, in the '60's and early '70's. The story begins with Daddy and Mr. Rick planting some pine trees. Those trees symbolize my lifelong friends, the Woodlawn Giants. Enjoy the trip back in time as the boys embark on several adventures to include Florida Ball, snipe hunting, and an attempt to jump the Ten-Mile Bayou. You will experience the "it takes a village" mentality that defined the everyday world the boys experienced under the watchful eye of Mrs. Mary Jane and Momma. Meet Big Phil Spicer the benevolent, larger- than- life patriarch of our gang. You will love the sassy Janice Smith, aka Skillet, quick and sharp with the tongue. Have a front row seat to the sniper operation where the entire gang comes together in a takedown of Old Man Donaldson. If you love to fish, you will enjoy the trot line stories on Dacus and Tunica Lake. Of course, anytime boys get together, there will be accidents and mistakes. We were not angels, and we learned some hard life lessons along the way. We all lived, we all learned, and it was a wonderful childhood. Miss you, Momma and Daddy. Miss you, Big Phil and the Woodlawn Giants. The pines still stand, and the memories live on.

Flo & Eddie - Hot (1975) Featuring D. H.L. Dacus on slide guitar. Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman signed with Columbia [Records] as Flo & Eddie. In his autobiography Shell Shocked, Kaylan revealed that upon receiving the cover art for their first album, they were appalled to learn that the printer had mistakenly printed the duo's stage names in the wrong order above their photograph. Volman was identified as Flo, which had been Kaylan's stage name in [Frank] Zappa's band, and Kaylan was identified as Eddie, Volman's stage name. The label refused to reprint the cover, saying that it would cost too much money. Thus, Kaylan and Volman decided to professionally swap stage names. They sang backing vocals on so many famous songs and albums that you've likely heard them today. Among them: "Bang a Gong" by T Rex.  Illegal Stills - Stephen Stills From The Inside - Alice Cooper "Hungry Heart" by Bruce Springsteen Blondie, Psychedelic Furs, Todd Rundgren (when you hear "Bang on the Drum All Day" at a sporting event, that's them singing,) Duran Duran, etc. Volman and Kaylan also sang on the first recording by Steely Dan, a demo of "Everyone's Gone To The Movies." I read an article where Kaylan says he was asked to be their lead singer, but he nixed the idea of singing without his partner.  James William Guercio - Tell Me (1973) Peter Cetera - Livin' in the Limelight (1980) Wikipedia: When Columbia Records dropped Chicago in 1981, Cetera was in the middle of recording his first solo album for the same label. He had to personally buy the rights to the album before it could be released. According to Cetera, Chicago's new record company, Warner Bros., released the Peter Cetera album while it was waiting for Chicago 16 to be released. Cetera has asserted that one reason for the album's poor commercial success, however, was lack of support from the record company: the record company didn't want it to be successful and didn't promote it for fear that he would leave the group. In his 2011 autobiography, former Chicago bandmate, Danny Seraphine, backs up Cetera on this point, writing, "... [the album] sank like a stone due to lack of record company support. Warner Brothers didn't want it to interfere with their plans for Chicago." A full-page advertisement announcing the album appeared on page 100 of the November 21, 1981 issue of Billboard magazine. For his last selection of a 2021 album, Trevor selects Lucy Dacus' June release titled, "Home Video."  Lucy Dacus has carved a name for herself with her unique songwriting and layered themes. Once a film school student prior to becoming a musician, Lucy has now released three studio albums as well as collaborated with Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker to form the supergroup "Boy Genius." This album see's the indie singer-songwriter drawing inspiration from her childhood as well as her teenage years. Many of the songs are inspired by actual diary entries that Lucy found herself re-reading on her first trip back to her hometown of Richmond Virginia. Dacus describes the experience as one in which she no longer recognized her former self, and wondered if her former self would approve of who she has become. This album is definitely raw and exposed like a heart on your sleeve. As Lucy describes in one track on this album, "it's embarrassing, the pulpy thing beating." While that may be the case, it's also relatable and perhaps a necessary checkpoint on the path of an young artist blossoming into a powerful force in the indie-pop genre.    ***Dont forget to check out our featured independent artist and album for this episode, Peter Carr of Wake the Watchman! Growing up is never easy. But pop songs about adolescence too often gloss over the complicated moments. The “teenage dream” archetype is just a pop culture fantasy. And no one really wants to be 17 forever.  On her new album “Home Video,” Lucy Dacus talks about youthful growing pains. She remembers the uncomfortable moments. Dacus says that “a lot of childhood is crisis mode… you get pushed around by the world and the rules that are set for you.” Her songs examine unequal power relationships between parents and friends and lovers.  On the lighter side, the album opens up with “Hot And Heavy,” which takes us back to the scene of an early romantic encounter on a basement sofa, red faced and awkward. But by the next song, “Christine,” the amorous feelings fade: “He can be nice, sometimes / Other nights, you admit he's not what you had in mind.” Bad dads, bible camp indoctrination, and perpetual peer pressure all take the stage in Dacus' coming of age album.  Dacus says that writing about those years is “a process of extorting control over things that I didn't have control over at the time.” With untethered teenage dreams safely behind her, Dacus now gets to reclaim the meaning of youth: “I am the narrator of my own life so I get to say what this meant.” Songs Discussed Lucy Dacus - Night Shift Frank Zappa - Sharleena boygenius - Souvenir Lukas Graham - 7 Years Kendrick Lamar - Beyonce Justin Bieber - Baby Mandy Moore - Fifteen Hilary Duff - Sweet Sixteen The Beatles - When I'm Sixty Four ABBA - Dancing Queen Sound of Music - Sixteen Going On Seventeen Avril Lavigne - 17 Kings Of Leon - 17 Lake Street Dive - Seventeen Sharon Van Etten - Seventeen Alessia Cara - Seventeen Stevie Nicks - Edge of Seventeen Janis Ian - At Seventeen More Playlist of coming of age songs  Learn more about your ad choices. Andy Williams - Theme From "Love Story" (12" Version) (1979) Normally, I have a deep disdain for old show business icons trying to ride the ol' disco train, but Andy Williams gives it all in this updated version of his big hit from 1972. Jeesh, say what you want about the guy, but on this, he BRINGS it. I believe this is the "short" version. The long version is 10 minutes. After doing this show for almost 6 years, Andy Williams has become one of my favorite vocalists.  Ann Peebles - Come to Mama (1975) Bob Seger covered this on his break-thru album Night Moves. I like this version much more. Al Green's producer produced this as well. Discerning ears will hear it right away.  Freddie Garrity and the New Dreamers - I'm Telling You Now (1976) Freddie and the Dreamers were an English beat band that had some hits between May 1963 and November 1965. The band's stage act was enlivened by the comic antics of the 5-foot-3-inch-tall Freddie Garrity, who would bounce around the stage with arms and legs flying. This album was about 10 years after their heyday. I can only imagine in 1976, arms and legs flying to keep the blunt from burning the studio rug. IYKWIM.  Freddie and the Dreamers - Tin Pan Alley (1978)  Charlie Dore - Fear Of Flying (1979) Charlie Dore had a fair-to-middling hit with "Pilot of the Airwaves" in 1979. I think they were grooming her to be a sort of Ricki Lee Jones. Hey, George Harrison sang one of her songs!!  Chicago - Street Player (12" Version) (1978) Look at that Donnie Dacus laughing in the middle of the shot. He seems so happy. They were already planning on kicking him to the curb. Of course, it made not one fricking bit of difference in the end. Wikipedia: His work in the starring role of Woof in Hair, with Annie Golden, Treat Williams, Beverly D'Angelo, John Savage was directed by Academy Award winner Miloš Forman. Hair was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards. The movie opened the Cannes Film Festival in 1979. Dacus' debut with Chicago followed the death of founding member Terry Kath. The first album Dacus appeared on (Hot Streets) went to No. 12 and platinum. Dacus also was in the lineup for Chicago 13. After the 1979 tour in support of Chicago 13, Dacus was released from the band without an announcement. Someone didn't put into the cocaine kitty.  In 1982, Dacus joined Badfinger.  Danny Livingstone - Rudy, A Message To You (1967) Dion - Daddy Rollin' (1968) B-side of "Abraham, Martin, and John". Trailer for the film Dr. Frankenstein on Campus (1970)  Eli Culbertson - I Need Your Love Tonight (1974) I thought this was a good example of an Elvis impersonation before Elvis died. But at the time, the artist insisted it was not an impersonation.  Eli Culbertson - Boogie Queen (1974) George Harrison - Fear Of Flying (1979) George Harrison - Lay His Head (1987) The Beach Boys - Here Comes The Night (12" Version) (1978) Jack Lee - Come Back And Stay (1976) Jack Lee also wrote "Hangin' on the Telephone".  Little Richard   Hurry Sundown (1967) Mars Bonfire - Born To Be Wild (1968)  Moby Grape - Never (1968) Niela Miller - Baby, Please Don't Go to Town (1961) John Lee Hooker - One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer (1966) Polaroid Swinger Commercial (1965) Barry Manilow on vocals. Renaldo & The Loaf - Ow! Stew The Red Shoe (1981) Terri Gibbs - Same Old Mop (1975) Terri Gibbs had a big hit with "Somebody's Knocking". This single predated that one by 6 years.  Manu Dibango - Soul Makossa (1971) Wikipedia: "Soul Makossa" is a song released as a single in 1972 by Cameroon saxophonist and songwriter Manu Dibango. It was originally recorded as the B-side for "Hymne de la 8e Coupe d'Afrique des Nations", a song celebrating the Cameroon national football team's accession to the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations football tournament, as well as Cameroon's hosting the games for the first time; the lyrics were written by Cameroonian poet and musicologist S.M. Eno Belinga. Except for some words in English, it was written in Duala, a native dialect continuum from Cameroon.  In 1972, David Mancuso found a copy in a Brooklyn West Indian record store and often played it at his parties at The Loft. The response was so positive that the few copies of "Soul Makossa" in New York City were quickly purchased. The song was subsequently played heavily by Frankie Crocker, who deejayed at WBLS, then New York's most popular black radio station. Since the original release was so obscure, at least 23 groups quickly released cover versions to capitalize on the demand for the record. Later in 1972, American-based Atlantic Records licensed the original Manu Dibango version from French record label Fiesta, and released it as a single. The single peaked at number 35 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1973; Dibango's original version of the song and a cover by Afrique was on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart at the same time. The song also became an international hit leading to even more cover versions by various groups around the world.  The song is probably best known for the chanted vocal refrain "ma-ma-ko, ma-ma-sa, ma-ko ma-ko-sa", which was adapted and used in songs by many prominent artists such as Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" from his album Thriller (1982). The refrain is a play on the word makossa, Dibango's main music genre. Roy Hawkins - The Thrill Is Gone (1951) No, B.B. King did not write this tune, but he certainly made it famous. I thought you might like to hear the original.  Tony Orlando & Dawn - Happy Man (1976)

As an Assistant Curator at the Museum of Fine Arts - Houston she spends a lot of her time managing the realities of cultures appropriated, sacred artifacts contaminated and/or desecrated, and a local population with changing expectations of what a museum is and should be. That's a lot. Sadly, she says that there is no bullwhip, giant boulders, or booby-trapped ruins in her job, but if there were would you expect her to admit it?? She does talk a lot about how museums are trying to be and do better. Treating artifacts with more respect, and repatriating where appropriate; making museums accessible and affordable to everyone, not just the affluent. Along the lines she also explains how museums keep their collections safe, and describes what may be the most amazing job ever - overseeing the travel and installation of a piece on "loan". While not as glamorous as anyone would hope, it still sounds pretty amazing! Once again, many thanks to Julie for her time and her vulnerability this week. The complexity of her feelings towards her decisions and her partner and his kids were fascinating to me, and deeply human. I'm really proud she felt comfortable enough to express her thoughts, even if some of them may have seemed taboo.I'm also really (really!) glad that Julie introduced me to Lucy Dacus. Since Julie told me that Night Shift was the song that she wanted to talk about, I've been listening to Dacus' 2018 record Historian on pretty heavy repeat. I'm not keeping as close an eye on these things as I used to, but is "big" sounding indie rock now pretty much completely dominated by amazing 20-something queer women? (Dacus, Courtney Barnett, Phoebe Bridgers and  Lindsey -- Snail Mail -- Jordan). Worth a ponder and definitely worth a listen to Night Shift before and/or after you hear this week's show. Oh, and if you like stuff that sounds like that, be sure to check out this duet of Phoebe Bridgers and Courtney Barnett covering Gillian Welch's Everything is Free. The guitar tone on that recording hits me. Right. There.Make sure you follow The Volume Knob on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or at our website volumeknob.net.And if you have a story about the song that saved your life be sure to send it to me at volumeknobpod@gmail.com.

Smash Bros Cast Episode 6     What the pros want from Smash for the Switch  From NintendoLife article Knockback seems to be a hot topic Thinkamana moderator for the Smashboards forum had this to say, “The oversight is that rage should never have applied to base knockback, as that messes up the consistency of low-% combos; this means that with some characters, the person losing might have fewer viable options,” Dabuz, a long time top ten Smash 4 player had this to say, “It's a great mechanic because it prevents fishing for KOs at specific damage percentages, but it scales largely with the base knockback of a move (that means the amount of knockback a move delivers at zero percent, basically.) This makes multi-hitting moves such as Zero-Suit Samus’ 'up-B' attack extremely powerful because high base knockback ensures one hit leads into all of its 'hits', which causes the opponent to pop out and die at very low percentages, largely due to rage.” Thinkaman’s solution is, “Applying rage to only knockback growth (like all other damage/knockback modifiers in the game) is the number one thing that I'd like to see fixed in Smash for Switch,”   Larry Lurranother top player would like to see the return of DACUS. A technique where you cancel your dash attack and do a sliding up smash. Fine tuning stick controls and upping the speed of rolling onto the stage were mentioned also. Nario, another professional Smash 4 player had this to say about the stages and stage hazards.“I hope we can further develop on that with something like a 'turn off hazards' option for most stages, similar to what PlayStation All-Stars had,” also this,  “Sometimes in competitive play, to have the most fair result, we need to play on extremely conservative stages, (but) that can get stale quickly. This would liven up the stage list by a lot.” Dabuzwould like to see the training mode fleshed more.“There's a lot of stuff missing from the current training mode (frame by frame speed, recording inputs, testing rage, etc.) so I would love to see a more fleshed out training mode. Right now, there's a lot of things that cannot be tested out there.” Multiplayer wasn’t the only area that Nario would like to see more of story mode like brawl had “I'd love to see a kind of story mode or adventure mode, similar to Brawl's Subspace Emissary,”and  “I love seeing characters in a crossover series interact with one another, like Meta Knight, Marth and Ike.” Who do the pros want to see in Smash on Swtich? Zero: I really want Cloud to stay for the next Smash title. I also want Sora to join the roster and for Snake to return. That's my wishlist. Other characters that made the list were Bayonetta Crash Bandicoot Waluigi Ice Climbers Isaac from Goldensun Banjo-Kazooie Tavis Touchdown Characters suggestions from the Discord Poudigne- Rex and Pyra/Mythra Ryno- Dixie and Funky Kong NintenDavid64- Cappy for Mario. Sylux, Trace,or someone else from Metroid. Another FZero character. And Rex of course. Nightcrawlr724- Not that I “want” to see it but I think they will have a ARMS character on the roster. Maybe the 4 champions from BOTW Ganthet-san- Cloud and the same Fire Emblem Characters would be cool. DarkPanda45- Banjo and Kazooie Ctsmitson-Rex/pyra for sure. If they wanted to add more xenoblade representation maybe have Reyn from the first game and Zeke from the second.  Other than xenoblade characters I would really like a monster hunter character, despite MH World not being on the switch. AllexandertheG-Id like to see game n watch back, all rabbid characters from kingdom battle, rex would be cool too Mels-I'll throw in a vote for Travis touchdown to make my man Suda happy Character Spotlight: Mario Mario’s versatile with ranged and up close attacks He can be played as an offensive or defensive character Utilize fireballs to move on opponents that are shielding and go for a grab Mario’s down throw followed by Up Tilt is an excellent combo for players that are at low percent as lon

Many parents are afraid to exercise biblical discipline or teach their kids the moral standards of Scripture for fear of having their children taken from their homes. Are these concerns legitimate? Do we have more parental rights than we think? And who can we call when we think our rights as parents are being violated? Our guest, Brad Dacus served as Legislative Assistant to U.S. Senator Phil Gramm, and went on to receive his Juris Doctor from the University of Texas, School of Law. Do You Know Your Parental Rights It's time to give parents back their license to parent. So many kids today are getting amped up and told to do their own thing by friends, social media, and just about everyone and everywhere else they turn to in our culture. Many kids believe their parents have no right to tell them what to do; they've bought the idea that their parents darn sure don't have the right to brainwash them with all that archaic Christianity stuff. Believe it or not, unfortunately, a lot of this stuff is coming from their public schools. I hope today we can help blow the lid off of some of the urban legends about the Department of Human Services (DHS) coming in to snatch kids away from parents just because they're Christians trying to raise their kids according to the mandates of the faith. But, by the same token, there are still some very legitimate concerns that need to be addressed. Today's guest ought to be an encouragement as we discuss parental rights by addressing the following topics: Who is Brad Dacus and why should I listen to him. What is the Ninth Circuit and why should parents be concerned. What is gender identity dysphoria. Is there empirical proof of gender dysphoria. Will family services become involved for disciplining one's own child. Picture provided by: Dannel Malloy
