Through his work with the Reformation Project, and his book God and the Gay Christian, Matthew Vines captures the essence of a journey shared by millions managing the complex intersection of faith and sexual identity. In a political climate where White Christian Nationalism increasingly scapegoats LGBTQ people for societal ills, Vines offers something revolutionary: a thoughtful framework for understanding Scripture that upholds its authority while making room for affirming theology. Through meticulous examination of historical context, he demonstrates how the same-sex behaviors condemned in Scripture were fundamentally different from the loving, committed relationships we recognize today.Drawing fascinating parallels to how Christians reinterpreted biblical teachings on slavery and charging interest, Vines shows how contextual understanding isn't compromising faith—it's deepening it. "The reason same-sex behaviors were condemned in Scripture are very different than the types of same-sex relationships we're talking about today," he explains. We discuss Pope Francis's legacy of inclusion and the challenges within evangelicalism, where reform seems simultaneously impossible and inevitable. Vines suggests that effective change comes not through flashy redesigns of church with pride flags everywhere, but through communities that fully include LGBTQ people while keeping "the main thing the main thing"—following Jesus.-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:BlueskyYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com Music: Majestic Earth - Joystock
Text us your questions!Matthew Vines is here to discuss the revised and expanded edition of his influential book God and the Gay Christian, marking eleven years since its initial release. The book sent shockwaves through evangelical Christianity and remains a powerful and compelling case for an affirming reading of the Bible for those who want to hold onto biblical authority (if you're counting, that's exactly one of the hosts of this podcast).Matthew shares the backstory behind the book, including how he took a semester off from Harvard to come out to his parents and how he spent months studying the Bible and reading ex-gay literature with his dad. That process ultimately changed his dad's mind and started the trajectory to this book. The heart of our conversation concerns Matthew's case for reading the Bible in an affirming way. He draws a fascinating parallel with how Christians approached biblical prohibitions against charging interest (usury) for 1,500 years—until John Calvin recognized that while Scripture categorically condemned the practice, its underlying moral logic was about protecting the vulnerable from exploitation. Similarly, Matthew argues, we must understand what same-sex behavior meant in ancient times before we can draw parallels to current practices and understandings.Matthew is articulate and thoughtful and approaches the issue with a great respect for the Bible and for his interlocutors. (The new edition of the book includes new sections responding to some of his critics!)This conversation ran so deep that we had to split it into two episodes! Description: Jeff Chu, an award-winning journalist, author, and "sort-of-kind-of farmer," joins Jen on the For the Love podcast to discuss his book, Good Soil: The Education of an Accidental Farmhand. In the book, Jeff shares stories from his time at “The Farminary”, a twenty-one-acre working farm at Princeton's Theological Seminary, where students explore life's biggest questions while cultivating the earth. Jeff reflects on his own struggles with faith, identity, and the expectations placed upon him as a gay man raised in a conservative Christian environment. His journey reveals the challenges of cultivating, not just plants, but also a spiritual life that is authentic, evolving, and inclusive. In this conversation, Jeff, Jen and Amy discuss: What Jeff learned at the “Farminary” about creating “good soil,” drawing lessons from the rhythms of growth, decay, and regeneration that define life on the land Finding moments of grace and healing. Challenging traditional interpretations of the biblical Parable of the Sower Exploring faith, not as something static, but as something that evolves. Thought-provoking Quotes: “God's love is that lavish and it's there for you. And it doesn't come with the conditions that you might have. It doesn't require you to do anything more than you've already done. It just requires you to be. God's love is big enough to hold that, and your mess, and your beauty, and your frailty, and anything else you might bring to God.” – Jeff Chu “I see folks trying to figure out how to create belonging, not just for themselves, but also for others, and being willing to ask those tough questions out loud, and being brave enough to say, I don't know, but I wonder. Being bold enough to point out not just the ugly things, but also to name the beautiful and hopeful things. Those are all things that give me hope.” – Jeff Chu #JeffChu #GoodSoil #ForTheLovePodcast #SpiritualJourney Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Community First Village / Mobile Loaves and Fishes - https://mlf.org/community-first/ Genesis Gardens - https://mlf.org/genesis-gardens/ 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess by Jen Hatmaker - https://amzn.to/4kZZmjN Actually Believing God Loves You Changes Everything: Jeff Chu - https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/series-16/actually-believing-god-loves-you-changes-everything-jeff-chu/ Good Soil: The Education of an Accidental Farmhand by Jeff Chu - https://amzn.to/4kXozLJ Wholehearted Faith by Rachel Held Evans and Jeff Chu - https://amzn.to/4iZlOrA Does Jesus Really Love Me?: A Gay Christian's Pilgrimage in Search of God in America by Jeff Chu - https://amzn.to/4bZH91N March: Book One by John Lewis - https://amzn.to/4c6xmXI Travel and Leisure magazine editor-at-large - https://www.travelandleisure.com/author/jeff-chu Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan - https://amzn.to/446LUo5 Padraig O'Tuama, poet - https://www.padraigotuama.com/ Kitchen Hymns by Padraig O'Tuama - https://amzn.to/4ccPFdV Maggie Smith, poet - https://maggiesmithpoet.com/ In The Shelter: Finding a Home in the World by Padraig O'Tuama - https://amzn.to/4ccNNBL Jeff Chu's Good Soil Book Tour - https://byjeffchu.com/tour Guest's Links: Website - https://byjeffchu.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/byjeffchu Twitter - https://x.com/jeffchu Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/byjeffchu Substack - https://byjeffchu.com/contact#substack Connect with Jen! “I'm afraid I'm going to hell because I'm not attracted to men. Please give me an unbiased interpretation of Romans 1.” We received this question from a young woman, M.V. This podcast was created by one of Google's newest AI engines, NotebookLM. (https://notebookLM.google.com) We gave NotebookLM M.V.'s question and these six quotes: 1. Justin Lee, from the book: “Torn: Rescuing the Gospel from the Gays-vs.-Christians Debate”: “Paul's writings in Romans 1 are about people who turned away from God and engaged in lustful, excessive behaviors. This is different from a loving, committed same-sex relationship.” 2. Janet Edmonds who I have quoted frequently in this series, says in part: “The behavior Paul (…author of the book of Romans…) was addressing here is explicitly associated with idol worship (probably temple prostitution…' “In the surrounding culture it was common for men of a higher status to take sexual advantage of male slaves or male prostitutes…” “The laws at the time in Rome allowed a master to demand sexual services from any slave, male or female” “Paul was not talking about homosexuality and didn't have in mind specifically prohibiting consensual same-sex relationships.” 3. Matthew Vines, in his book “God and the Gay Christian”: says “Paul's references to ‘unnatural' relations in Romans 1:26-27 are often misunderstood. He was addressing specific cultural practices of his time, not committed, loving same-sex relationships as we understand them today.” 4. Rev. Dr. Mel White, Book: “What the Bible Says—and Doesn't Say—about Homosexuality”: “Romans 1:26-27 must be read in the context of the entire chapter, which condemns idolatry and excessive lust, not loving same-sex relationships.” 5. Kathy Baldock, in her book “Walking the Bridgeless Canyon”: “Paul's use of ‘natural' and ‘unnatural' in Romans 1 reflects the cultural norms of his time, not a universal condemnation of same-sex relationships.” 6. James Brownson, “Bible, Gender, Sexuality: Reframing the Church's Debate on Same-Sex Relationships”: “Romans 1, 26 and 27 addresses behaviors that were seen as dishonorable and excessive, not the loving, committed relationships we see today.” For more information about NotebookLM: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0LMPb9JJnosPj8SPVRSF9z?si=rrOjkTrAR0eGO0Otrv5zfg&t=1466&context=spotify%3Ashow%3A44fllCS2FTFr2x2kjP9xeT

The term "gay Christian" has long been disputed, even among those who agree with the traditional Christian sexual ethic. Christian author Rosaria Butterfield continued that argument in a recent article, titled "I Don't Have an LBGTQ Neighbor—And Neither Do You." In the article, Butterfield argued that there is no such thing as an LGBTQ+ person, because sexual orientation is a social construct. Furthermore, Butterfield argued, this an issue of identity, and identifying by sexual orientation enslaves a person to sexual sin. Any number of Christian leaders agree with Butterfield completely. However, many do not. On this episode, we discuss the differing views of people on LGBTQ+ issues. Specifically, we take a closer look at the range of views among those who hold to a traditional sexual ethic on issues of terminology, celibacy, and how to best approach our LBGTQ+ neighbors. PART 3 of 4: Many Christians wonder how it is possible to be LGBTQ+ affirming in light of what most people assume to be a clear anti-Gay message in the bible. This episode wrestles with ROMANS 1, and the VICE LISTS in 1 Corinthians and 1 TIMOTHY. In this special 4-part series, Kelly examines how affirming Bible scholars view the 6 verses in the Bible that deal with same-sex relationships in the context of their time and place, and ask whether these really are sweeping prohibitions of all same-sex relationships, or are about specific issues in a certain time--including violence, idolatry, and religious difference--that may not apply to modern LGBTQ+ people and relationships. PART 4 of 4: Many Christians wonder how it is possible to be LGBTQ+ affirming in light of what most people assume to be a clear anti-Gay message in the bible. This episode summarizes all the verses we've studied so far, and weighs them against the larger backdrop of the Biblical principles of Love, Grace, and how we are called to treat others. Love doesn't necessarily mean accepting everything others do, and all though under the law of love, everything is permitted, not everything is beneficial--but love also desires more than just compelling others to do good. It desires their THRIVING. This week's top episode from the archives is our number one most listened to episode. In a profoundly moving encore episode, Jen Hatmaker shares the story of interviewing her daughter, Sydney, as Sydney shared her emotional coming out story. This raw conversation follows Sydney as she vulnerably shares her journey of accepting herself as gay while still holding onto her faith–and we're very excited to share this again during Pride Month as part of our Queer Futures series. Jen reintroduces the episode reflecting on what's changed since this conversation and how it's affected her community. Three years later, this episode remains an incredible force, sparking deep discussions around LGBTQ+ issues and Christianity in our community. Jen recalls the immense reach and impact this episode evoked - from mending broken family relationships to causing church leaders to reevaluate their approach. As Jen reflects on Sydney's growth, it's a beautiful reminder that embracing authenticity allows people to flourish. * * * Thought-Provoking Quotes: “I was just scared, and alone. And I wanted to have it all. I wanted to have my family, and God, and my future. And I didn't think I'd be able to have it all.” -Sydney Hatmaker “It doesn't matter how loving you are, or what emphasis on Scripture you come with. That's not enough if you're not fully accepting them as children of God.” -Sydney Hatmaker “Your allyship can't be about you, and it can't be performative, and it has to be for everybody. And it has to be about love.” -Sydney Hatmaker Connect with Jen! Episode Summary. This is the first episode in our March series, Worldviews Leading Our Loved Ones Astray. We begin by noting that many of the rising generation are rejecting the Christianity they grew up with because what the Bible says about homosexuality seems so outdated and unfair to them. This episode seeks to recover the teaching that all Christians must treat those in the LGBTQ+ life with compassion and dignity, yet not allow ourselves to over-empathize with this group and abandon the truth of Scripture as many are doing. This episode explains the background behind, 1) those who claim to be Gay Christians, 2) the concept of sexual orientation, and 3) the concept of gay identity. For Further Prayerful Thought:What stood out to you about the way Jesus exhibited a welcoming attitude towards the woman at the well and refused to stigmatize her. How would you try to make the church a safe place for rising teens who experience same-sex attraction? How would you explain to other Christians that the category sexual orientation is a false characterization of personhood? How does that perspective of the sin of homosexuality get in the way of one repenting over his or her same sex desires and practices? If all Christians are sinners, which means some are guilty of the sin of same-sex desire, why is calling those who struggle with this particular sin “Gay Christians” wrong?Which facts about the homosexual life stood out to you?For the printed version of this message click here. For a summary of topics addressed by podcast series, click here. For FREE downloadable studies on men's issues click here.To make an online contribution to enable others to hear about the podcast: (Click link and scroll down to bottom left)
Is it okay to come out and call yourself a “Gay Christian,” as long as you don't act on your desires? If someone struggles with same-sex attraction or gender confusion, can they accept those as part of their identity, adopt preferred pronouns and even identifying as “trans?” According to Side B theology, the answer to both of these questions is yes. These are ideas that are being heavily promoted in conservative evangelical circles, and Christians really need to be aware of what's coming to a church near you. In today's episode, Alisa and Natasha give a quick primer on what side B theology is, who are some of the main players, and share some concerns for you to consider as you think through these questions for yourself.

David Gushee is an influential Christian ethicist who famously changed his mind about LGBTQ Christians. His 2014 book Changing Our Mind (now in its third edition) has been celebrated and widely recommended as an honest and forceful reckoning with the ethical issues surrounding LGBTQ Christians and the church's complicity in their exclusion, neglect, and abuse. It is a powerful and well-researched chronicle of David's journey from a traditional stance to an inclusive one, a journey that he completed while remaining theologically conservative. We are honored that David agreed to speak with us about this important book, and we look forward to more conversations about his many others in the near future! The bourbon we tasted in this episode is Hardin's Creek Clermont. To skip to the interview, go to 11:32. Have you ever considered the profound responsibility we hold towards the animal kingdom? It's a question that carries weighty moral implications, and together with Reverend Dr. Beth Cooper, an animal advocate and health specialist, we tackle this very subject. Our conversation navigates the delicate terrain of animal trauma, the stark realities of euthanasia, and the deep-seated call for stewardship that transcends our human-centered world. Dr. Cooper's expertise sheds light on the behaviors of both domesticated and wild animals, urging us to recognize our role in their lives and the significance of compassionate care. The episode takes a further leap into the spiritual realm, where faith intersects with our treatment of God's creatures. Drawing from Christian teachings, we discuss the concept of stewardship over dominion, and recount the transformative story of St. Francis of Assisi, whose life epitomizes the healing bond between humans and nature. We also share an inspiring rescue tale—a Palomino Tennessee walking horse's journey from the brink of death to a new life, highlighting the intelligence and resilience inherent in these beautiful creatures. With Dr. Cooper's contribution, this episode is not just a dialogue but a heartfelt call to action for anyone who cherishes the creatures with whom we share this earth.

Embark on a journey with host Billy Hallowell exploring a deep friendship between two academics with wildly opposing views but who both attest to the boundless love of God on this week's podcast. This week's Unbelievable features an insightful discussion featuring two individuals with contrasting LGBTQI+ faith journeys as they delve into the intersection of faith, sexuality, and the Bible. The debate is between two gay Christians who have arrived at distinctly different interpretations of the Bible's teachings on sexual ethics, marriage, and human relationships. As a young man Dr. David Bennett perceived Christianity as an adversary to LGBTQI+ freedom. Shaped by early encounters with prejudice and homophobia, he embraced life as a gay activist. Opposite David is Dr. Taylor Telford, an academic theologian whose journey led her from an evangelical upbringing to a progressive perspective, especially concerning gay marriage. Taylor serves as the Associate Pastor for Imaginative Worship at a PC(USA) congregation in Spokane, WA, and as adjunct faculty at Whitworth University and The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. David Bennett's transformative conversion to Christianity, unfolded in a gay bar in his native Australia, and propelled him on a profound theological quest that ultimately led him to embrace an historically orthodox sexual ethic. Identifying as gay, a Christian, and living a celibate life, David is currently a postdoctoral research fellow and theologian at the University of Oxford, England. As the Anglican's General Synod meets this coming week and it appears gay and lesbian/ same-sex attracted Christians whatever their theological convictions are upset with the way Bishops have suggested implementing the Prayers of Love and Faith (PLF) in the Church of England, this is an unmissable episode of Premier Unbelievable. Is it normal for Christians to experience seasons of doubt? The truth is, doubt can hit any believer at any time, even Christian scholars like Gary Habermas! But are you prepared to do the hard work of combating those false ideas to seek the truth, when so many people in our culture today are jumping ship and taking the easy way out? In this midweek podcast episode, Frank addresses a handful of listener questions surrounding a variety of topics including overcoming our doubts, the legislation of morality, apologetics in the public school system, and much more! Frank will also touch on questions like: Why shouldn't people who are same-sex attracted identify as 'Gay Christians'? Can doubt sometimes be a GOOD thing? Are religion and morality the same? What's going on with Andy Stanley? What do you say when someone calls you transphobic? If you've got objections to the faith, don't panic! For every objection, you can find a reasonable response from people who have struggled with the very same objections, but only if you take the time to look! There's plenty of faulty objections to go around, but as Frank explains, the key is to follow the facts--not your feelings. Today we're joined by author, pastor, and Bible professor Dr. Christopher Yuan to discuss his incredible testimony and new video curriculum "The Holy Sexuality Project." We start off with his story of transformation from an agnostic gay man to a redeemed Bible professor. Not only did God turn his unbelief into belief right from a prison, but God also freed him from the bondage of drugs and promiscuity. Can you be a Christian and practice homosexuality at the same time? We answer this question and dive into why the biblical model for marriage is so important. Then, Dr. Yuan breaks down "The Holy Sexuality Project" and why it's so important to talk with our kids about biblical sexuality in appropriate ways. --- Timecodes: (02:05) Dr. Yuan's story (16:37) Turning to drugs (22:28) Reaction to parents becoming Christian (33:32) Coming to Christ (43:49) Can you be a Christian and practice homosexuality? Our guest for #414 is Isaac Sharp, author of The Other Evangelicals: A Story of Liberal, Black, Progressive, Feminist, and Gay Christians―and the Movement That Pushed Them Out. Isaac B. Sharp is director of online and part-time programs and visiting assistant professor at Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York. He is the coeditor of Evangelical Ethics: A Reader in the Library of Theological Ethics series (Westminster John Knox, 2015) as well as Christian Ethics in Conversation (Wipf & Stock, 2020). About the book: What's the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “evangelical”?For many, the answer is “white,” “patriarchal,” “conservative,” or “fundamentalist”—but as Isaac B. Sharp reveals, the “big tent” of evangelicalism has historically been much bigger than we've been led to believe. In The Other Evangelicals, Sharp brings to light the stories of those twentieth-century evangelicals who didn't fit the mold, including Black, feminist, progressive, and gay Christians.Though the binary of fundamentalist evangelicals and modernist mainline Protestants is taken for granted today, Sharp demonstrates that fundamentalists and modernists battled over the title of “evangelical” in post–World War II America. In fact, many ideologies characteristic of evangelicalism today, such as “biblical womanhood” and political conservatism, arose only in reaction to the popularity of evangelical feminism and progressivism. Eventually, history was written by the “winners”—the Billy Grahams of American religion—while the “losers” were expelled from the movement via the establishment of institutions such as the National Association of Evangelicals. Carefully researched and deftly written, The Other Evangelicals offers a breath of fresh air for scholars seeking a more inclusive history of religion in America.
Dr. Isaac Sharp, scholar on the history of Evangelicalism and author of the new book, The Other Evangelicals: A Story of Liberal, Black, Progressive, Feminist, and Gay Christians and The Movement That Pushed Them Out, sits down with Tim to discuss his book. Dr. Sharp explains his background in Evangelicalism and why he wrote his new book. Tim and Dr. Sharp discuss how Evangelicals are defined. They also discuss the history of Evangelicalism often left out of white conservative Evangelical narratives. Lastly, they discuss the power struggle within Evangelicalism for control of the definition of what it means to be Christian. Art is the Director of Community Care for Revoice--an organization whose mission is to support and encourage gay, lesbian, bisexual, and other same-sex attracted Christians—as well as those who love them—so that all in the Church might be empowered to live in gospel unity while observing the historic Christian doctrine of marriage and sexuality. Art realized he was gay at around age 12 and became a Christian in his late teens. He's served as a youth pastor and currently works for Revoice. Our converation reflects upon his journey, which includes seeking to find intimacy and community as a gay man and committed Christ follower pursuing celibacy.
