Truly a renaissance man, Greg has countless stories about the goaltenders and their masks. A nostalgic look back at our favorite hockey hero's who wore the red, white and blue for the Rangers during the 1960's,70's and 80's. In episode number 39 we discuss the Rangers quick "play in " exit losing to the Hurricanes as well as the excitement surrounding "winning" the draft lottery and the impact that presumptive first overall pick Alexis La freniere will make on the club. We then segway to our main topic and revisit the epic 1973-74 Stanley Cup semi-finals between the Rangers and the Flyers. * What do Rangers fans and management take away from the rangers disappointing "play in" exit vs Carolina ? Is this team built physically and mentally for the rigors of the NHL Playoffs ? * Why did Quinn deviate from his regular season rotation and play Lundqvist over Georgiev after Shesterkin was deemed unfit to play ? *Will Lafreniere leap ahead of Brad Park and turn out to be the greatest Rangers player drafted when his career is all said and done? Will Lafreniere provide the grit, muscle, leadership and elite offensive talent so lacking amongst Rangers forwards. * The 1973-74 Flyers nicknamed the " Broad Street Bullies" were   a young , hungry,  intimidating and skilled team committed to initiating withering and relentless physical punishment on the opposition. *The Rangers were an established and veteran club anxious to rebound from a subpar regular season yet confident after beating the defending Stanley Cup Champion Canadiens in the previous round. * Dave Schultz mentioned before the clubs met that he preferred to play the Rangers because of their history of choking in the playoffs. * The Flyers physically dominated the first two games in Philadelphia  with Rick MacLeish, Ross Lonsberry and Bernie Parent the stars. * The Rangers rebounded in games 3 and 4 despite the Flyers taking an early 2-0 lead in Game 3. Brad Park and Rod Gilbert were the stars for the Rangers with Gilbert scoring one of the greatest OT goals in Rangers history in Game 4 evening up the series at 2.  * MacLeish dominated for the Flyers in their game 5 win at home while Park, Vickers and Gilbert did the same for the Rangers in their game 6 win at home forcing a deciding game 7 in Philadelphia. *In the most humiliating game 7 loss in franchise history and possibly in all of NY Sports history the Rangers lost 4-3 and earned the distinction of being the first original six franchise to lose to an expansion team during the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Rangers were physically punished ( with Dale Rolfe pummeled by Dave Shultz and the Rangers defenseman unable to protect Eddie Giacomin and keep the physical Flyers forwards from crashing the net down low leading to two goals by Dornhoefer, Kindrachuck and MacLeish) played sloppy defense in front of Giacomin and most egregiously of all  captain Vic Hadfield caught laughing in the penalty box to end the game and the season for the Rangers due to a too many men on the ice penalty.  * The Flyers went on to beat the Boston Bruins in the finals to capture the franchises first of two consecutive Stanley Cups.

A nostalgic look back at our favorite heroes and legends who wore the red, white and blue for the rangers during the 60's,70's and 80's. In Episode # 31 we look back on the 1972 Stanley Cup finals between the NY Rangers and their hated rivals the Boston Bruins. * First Stanley Cup final's meeting between these two clubs since 1929. * Rangers defeated the defending Stanley Cup Champion Canadiens and the Chicago Blackhawks while the Bruins defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Blues to reach the Finals * Bruins finished first in the league in points and were led by Superstars Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr and an incredible lineup of tough and skilled players that excelled in penalty killing and the power play. * The Rangers finished with the second most points and were led by Superstar  Brad Park, the GAG line of Hadfield ,Ratelle and Gilbert (although Ratelle sustained a devastating ankle injury earlier in the season and just started playing again in the finals) as well as Star Goaltender Edie Giacomin who was also playing with a knee injury. * The Bruins defeated the Rangers in six games for their second Cup in three seasons. * The Bruins devastated the Rangers while shorthanded scoring  three shorthanded goals in the series ( Derek Sanderson and Eddie Westfall were brilliant). Both teams tallied six power play goals * Bruins Goaltending was the difference in the series as Eddie Johnston was outstanding and Gerry Cheevers (who went undefeated in 33 straight games during the season) pitched a shutout in the Cup clinching game six at MSG. * The Bruins size, strength and physicality especially down low ( where the Bruin forwards always seemed to outnumber the Rangers) caused the Rangers all sorts of problems in the series. Bruins forwards Wayne Cashman and Ken Hodge were particularly dominant.

Considered by many as the greatest coach and GM in NY Rangers history.  * Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982  * Recognized for his outstanding accomplishments in building and coaching the NY Rangers, St. Louis Blues and Hartford Whalers * Earned the Lester Patrick award in 1982 for his outstanding contributions to Hockey in the United States * Was a star netminder in both Junior and Minor leagues earning All-Star births and MVP awards. *Started his NHL career with the BlackHawks while also playing in parts of four seasons with the Rangers *Was the innovator and inventor of the first Goalie gloves designed after the baseball first baseman's mitt. *Developed leadership skills at a young age and quickly established himself as a successful coach and hockey executive with the Rangers organization starting in 1960. * Coached Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert at Guelph in 1960-61 * Promoted to Assistant GM in 1962 * Promoted to Head Coach and GM in 1965 * Led the Rangers to nine straight years of playoff births from 1966-67 through 1974-75 including a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1972. * Coaching record of 388 wins, 273 losses, and 117 ties with the Rangers, Blues, and Whalers. * Built a team that many consider the most elite and consistent Rangers team in the modern era designed around finesse and skill but lacking in physicality. Some say it was the most elite team never to win a Stanley Cup * Built his Rangers clubs around star players Eddy Giacomin, Jean Ratelle, Rod Gilbert, Vic Hadfield, Brad Park, and Walt Tkaczuk * Was the architect of many controversial trades and transactions both successful and unsuccessful. A few examples : -Park and Ratelle for Esposito and Vadnais -Eddie Giacomini on waivers and picked up by Detroit Vic Hadfield to the Penguins -Moose Dupont, Mike Murphy, Red Berenson to St. Louis - Traded for John Davidson - Traded for Pete Stemkowski, Bruce Mcgregor, Teddy Irvine, and Bobby Rousseau

I loved recording this podcast because it gives a look at the background and theory as well as practical experience, hints and tips for reviewing and improving Employee Experience.  In this episode I am joined by Lara Plaxton (@_Lara_HR on Twitter or here on LinkedIn https://uk.linkedin.com/in/lara-plaxton-7927aaa) who is the head of HR at FDM UK.  Lara has a fairly unique perspective on employee experience as the work that FDM do, doesn't necessarily match with the standard model.  FDM support organisations and graduates, ex-forces and returners by placing graduates in client organisations but importantly, those graduates remain as employees of FDM.  So FDM's employees experience two (potentially) different cultures; one for being an employee of FDM and then working in a clients business every day.   During this podcast we explore some key terms and definitions around User Experience, Employee Experience and Design Thinking before going more specifically into what Lara and FDM do to measure and improve their employee experience.  We cover some key things to think about, tips and techniques to review or improve employee experience and we delve deep into the thinking and theory behind this area.  As always, links and references: Systems thinking https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V38HrPnYkHI - short video with Peter Senge https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1877050915002860 - research paper (open access) http://amj.aom.org/content/58/1/1.short  - short article on design thinking http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.0011-7315.2004.02611.x/full - Pullman and Gross (2004) Ability of experience design elements to elicit emotions and loyalty behaviours https://www.wiley.com/en-gb/Interaction+Design:+Beyond+Human+Computer+Interaction,+4th+Edition-p-9781119020752 - Preece, Sharp and Rogers (2015); Interaction Design - Beyond Human-Computer Interaction   Employee Experience https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Employee_experience_management - Short definition https://www.forbes.com/sites/jeannemeister/2017/01/05/the-employee-experience-is-the-future-of-work-10-hr-trends-for-2017/#13666e8920a6 - summary article http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/13678868.2014.886443 - Cascio (2014); Leveraging Emplolyer Branding, performance management and human resource development to enhance employee retention   User Experience https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_experience     The Service - Profit chain HBR article https://hbr.org/2008/07/putting-the-service-profit-chain-to-work   Moira Clarke 10 year causation analysis https://www.henley.fi/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Moira-full-article.pdf   Human Centred Design http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.2752/175630614x14056185480186 - Giacomin (2015); What is Human Centred Design   Gamification https://www.routledge.com/The-Business-of-Gamification-A-Critical-Analysis/Dymek-Zackariasson/p/book/9781138824164 - Dymek & Zackariasson (2017); the business of gamification  Design Thinking https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-hzefHdAMk - Video with Tim Brown CEO of IDEO
