In our last episode we took a look at films that followed Alfred HItchcock's filmmaking style. This time around we're looking at films that have deep echoes of the work of Ingmar Bergman. We start with Away From Her (2006), written and directed by Sarah Polley. Julie Christie plays a woman whose Alzheimer's is starting to advance, and her husband (Gordon Pinsent) has to deal with the guilt, the loneliness and all the other unexpected complications that come with placing her in a facility. It's probably one of the best films about Alzheimer's you'll see, and it's simultaneously sad and uplifting. In Part 2, we'll talk about a movie that's a little more on the nose, with Bergman Island. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support

Ed Conroy, a Toronto-based cultural historian and the creator of Retrontario, joins the show for a look back at the 40th anniversary of Pay TV in Canada. On February 1, 1983, Canada's first Pay TV channels arrived on the airwaves to great fanfare: Competing movie services First Choice and Superchannel offered subscribers blockbuster movies "uncut and commercial free" while the more refined C Channel offered more highbrow fare: world cinema, opera, theatre and concerts. First Choice distinguished itself from the other services by offering adult entertainment (softcore nudity on the soap opera “Loving Friends and Perfect Couples” and late night Playboy Channel programming, co-productions that controversially qualified as Canadian Content). But Pay TV was not a success out of the gate, leading to C Channel going off the air within weeks and First Choice eventually having to merge with Superchannel (Canadians know the service now as Crave). Ed and I take the listener on a tour of this chapter in television history, when uncut movies in your home were a novelty in the days before VCRs were commonplace, and the thrill of being exposed to exciting illicit programming, bringing Canadian teenagers in the eighties an at-home crash course in high and low film culture. RIP Noah Cowan, veteran programmer and artistic director for TIFF who brought us Midnight Madness at the Festival and whose father Edgar brought us C Channel, a service ahead of its time. One more Canuck Puck for the road! This week, Jason picks the Sarah Polley-directed (yes, it's her third appearance in a short period of time, fight us!) weeper starring Julie Christie and Gordon Pinsent - Away From Her. The guys debate the sincerity of one of the nursing home staff members, they make comparisons to The Sweet Hereafter, they talk about the poetic dialogue and much more. Plus: to wrap up the conversation on the Top 10 list and Canadian film (for now), Brendan and Jason read some comments from listeners.   Next week: back to the British! The guys take a look at an "updated list" of the Top 100 British Films of All-Time by looking at a recently-released list from Empire in which they will discuss about 40 films that are not on the BFI list. The first one on the docket: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Questions? Comments? Suggestions? I suppose you'd be wise to spend some of your Valentine's Day hearing us warble about Julie Christie, Gordon Pinsent and friends do mighty good work in Away From Her. The 2 leads are quiet dynamite, but Olympia Dukakis, Michael Murphy and Kristen Thomson are a fair bit of gentle TNT themselves. Sarah Polley's debut as both a writer and director is a sensitive, lovely film about senior citizens. What's especially impressive is that Polley was only 27 years old when she made it. So don't disappear. Just learn to accept that your life is changing (maybe not for the better) as the 429th Ellises' Analysis sorts through the beautiful, but devastating angles of this lyrical opus to aging and Alzheimer's. Sparkplug Coffee is not going to prevent dementia, but it CAN help a grown-up of any age get their day started deliciously. Ep. 47: Should Canadian Actors Aspire Beyond Their National Cinema?

When it comes to contending in Hollywood, Canadian actors have always punched above their weight. But for every Ryan Gosling, Tatiana Maslany, or Rachel McAdams, there’s a Paul Gross, a Mary Walsh, or a Gordon Pinsent — actors who have, for the most part, forgone a career in the US and instead made names for themselves within the Canadian film and television scene. It makes us wonder: which career path should Canadian artists be following? To get the answer, Rob and Geoff sit down with an actor who has a foot in both camps, Maxim Roy. Maxim is well known amongst Canadians for 19-2, Allure, and Les Boys, but has also built a career south of the border with roles in Shadowhunters and The Factory. The three discuss why so many Québécois actors are reluctant to work outside their home province, what the anglophone-Canadian film industry could learn from the francophone industry, and if star Canadian directors like Denis Villeneuve and Jean-Marc Vallée should be making more of an effort to cast Canadian talent. They also talk about why French-Canadian actors don’t break through internationally in the same way actors from France do, and why French-Canadian characters aren’t more present in English-language films.

Blacula tells the story of an African prince named Mamuwalde who in 1780 is cursed by the infamous Count Dracula and is forced into the life of a vampire. He reawakens in the 1970s in Los Angeles, where he must adjust to his new settings and begin his life anew. However, he meets a woman who resembles his long-dead wife, Luva, and it sets him on a journey to be with her. He kills/feeds on random people in L.A., and eventually is hunted by the police. The blaxploitation genre of the 1970s was full of memorable and original films. Taking the Black perspective on social issues and even recreating stories from other subgenres of its time, the era was a sharp cutout in the industry that was fresh and bold. One such genre hadn't gone untouched unto 1972, horror. That's where William Marshall dawns the cape and added style to the Dracula mythos with Blacula. Making the Dracula story his own, Marshall was joined by Vonetta McGee, Denise Nicholas, Gordon Pinsent, Charles Macaulay, and Thalmus Rasulala in this subgenre first.
