Veterinarian. Musician. Author. Actor. Those are the titles Dr. Greg is known for. And though he serves on multiple boards as a consultant as well as a mentor for aspiring veterinarians, he also understands that there's more to life than just “work.” In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that most veterinarians work full time, often clocking more than 40 hours per week – including nights and weekends. That's a whole lot of time dedicated to caring for others. As such, vets need to be careful not to lose their sense of self and become consumed by work identities. Remember, you are more than your job! Dr. Shaw explains: “My mission in life is to inspire the world to dream in a way that transcends professional or societal norms and to create your own path and own who you were created to be. Your purpose. Your dreams. Your way.” On this episode of 21 Questions with Vet Candy, we learn about the time Dr. Greg bought a ticket to Thailand on a whim and how if he had a time machine, he would use it to go back in time to jam with Charlie Parker.

We're joined by Greg Shaw, Nutrition Lead for Swimming Australia and Performance Manager for the open water program. As a former athlete and then sports dietitian, Greg has used supplements, researched supplement use, contibuted to the AIS Sports Supplement Framework and worked with numerous athletes to advise them on supplement use. We discuss how to define supplements, his process of determining if an individual would benefit from supplements, and how we would benefit by shifting from a "magic pills and potions" to a "nutrient optimisation" mindset.

A Fortune Magazin 2019-ben a világ legbefolyásosabb nőinek listáján jegyezte Deanna Mulligant, aki a Guardian Life Insurance Company of Americának, a Fortune 300 listáján szereplő vállalatok egyikének elnök-vezérigazgatója.

In this episode we had the good fortune to be able to exchange ideas with two of our most popular former guests, the brilliant Gregory Shaw and Edward Butler. What better subject to talk about than the Parmenides, perhaps the most difficult of Plato's dialogs. Of course it is no surprise that we tackled some really heavy topics, most notably, the One that is not. We also explore the interaction of polytheism and monotheism, the function and nature of the henads, as well as whatever else seemed interesting at the time. LEADERSHIP INSIGHTS Only about 15% of companies that attempted a culture change succeeded. Most organization talks about culture transformation. The best ones renovate—maintaining what made them great to begin with while making themselves more resilient for the future. The most successful companies have leaders who don’t assume they know what the culture of their company is. They use data that is gathered frequently and broadly. Identify the influencers/energizers and the blockers within your organization. Use the former to be culture ambassadors. Determining how progress will be measured is a key predictor of the success of a culture change. Two-thirds of companies that successfully changed did this. Ninety percent of unsuccessful companies did not do this. QUESTIONS TO INSPIRE US TO ACTION What is some lesson, saying, or experience that continues to influence your leadership to this day? The idea of “open-book management”—managing a company transparently. It is both better and easier. Use three descriptors to finish this sentence: “A leader is…” Honest, visionary, and clear. What is a question that leaders should be asking either themselves or others? What more do I need to learn, and where should I focus that effort? What book would you recommend to leaders? A Hit Refresh: The Quest to Rediscover Microsoft's Soul and Imagine a Better Future for Everyone by Greg Shaw, Jill Tracie Nichols, and Satya Nadella If you could get every listener to start doing something THIS week to help them be a better leader, what would it be? Take time to invest in yourself (not by exercising or eating better but by reading or gaining other information instead of simply giving it to others). As a general life principle, is it better to ask “why?” or “why not?” “Why?” because you can question the conventional thinking, though the same philosophy can be behind in the question “why not?” CONNECT WITH KEVIN Twitter: https://twitter.com/kmoakes (@kmoakes) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinoakes (in/kevinoakes) Website: https://culturerenovation.com/ (culturerenovation.com) Purchase https://www.amazon.com/Culture-Renovation-Leadership-Actions-Unshakeable/dp/1260464369 (Culture Renovation) CONNECT WITH JOSH Instagram: https://instagram.com/joshuafriedeman (@joshuafriedeman) Email: josh@friedemanleadership.com Want a FREE list of weekly action steps to improve your leadership? Deanna Mulligan is the former CEO and current Board Chair of The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, and the author of Hire Purpose; How Smart Companies Can Close the Skills Gap. Deanna shares why investing in reskilling is the key to success. Employers of all sizes can and should reskill to attract, retain and outperform the competition. One of the ways you build empathy is you earn, and you earn it by doing the hard stuff. Key Takeaways [5:15] One of the things the pandemic has taught Deanna is that we are more innovative than we think. She rushed in and deployed technology that would normally have taken eight months to train and get familiar with, in under two weeks, and it had a very high acceptance rate! [7:00] Now that she has freed up human capital, she can now train her staff in other areas and help them become more specialized. [11:40] The role and the importance of actuaries are going to change as technology makes it easier to calculate complex math problems. [12:30] For example, in the fraud department, AI and machines are much quicker at picking up these bad patterns than humans are. [14:25] So what happens when these skill sets become irrelevant for a human to do? It’s time to put your people in a new training program to upskill or reskill them. Deanna developed a program where her actuaries can now become data scientists and they’ve seen great results from it. [15:20] It’s a two-way street. Companies owe it to their employees to reskill them, but employees also need to be proactive and take advantage of learning opportunities. [17:15] You can assist and boost your employee’s skill sets up even if you’re a small company. There are a lot of free resources out there! [20:40] Yes, it is hard to train your brain to think differently or to learn a foreign tool, but the rewards are far greater. [24:00] No one is immune to the need to reskill. CEO attributes might very well be outdated in two to three years. [32:25] Purpose and profits are intertwined. The more you live the company purpose, the less you have to worry about profits because they will naturally follow. [38:15] We’re all in this together, so let’s think through what we have to do to get to the end goal. It’s the leaders’ mission to include that goal and facilitate their frontline employees to use the tools. [40:39] Although it might sound unrealistic, Deanna’s two-year sabbatical was much needed. It gave her the chance to step back and really think with intention and purpose about the kind of organization she wanted to lead. [44:50] Listener Challenge: Never Stop Learning. Quotable Quotes “Purpose and profits are intertwined.” “Human beings are endlessly adaptable and both our customers and our agents are endlessly adaptable.” “When people are in adverse circumstances, they reach down in themselves and they learn how to do things and invent things.” “Necessity is the mother of invention.” “We can teach adults new things at a very sophisticated level.” “Even though it’s difficult, investment [in your staff] is the answer.” “One of the ways you build empathy is you earn, and you earn it by doing the hard stuff.” “If you can’t connect what you’re doing every day to a higher purpose of some sort, then you’re going to have a hard time staying in business.” Resources Mentioned Deanna Mulligan’s Bio Deanna on LinkedIn Hire Purpose: How Smart Companies Can Close the Skills Gap, by Deanna Mulligan and Greg Shaw The Leadership Podcast is Sponsored by: Cultivate Grit. Kevin Scott is Microsoft’s chief technology officer, its executive vice president of AI and Research, and the author, with Greg Shaw, of the new book, “Reprogramming the American Dream: From Rural America to Silicon Valley, Making AI Serve Us All." Scott, who joined Microsoft with its acquisition of LinkedIn, goes back to his roots in rural Virginia in the book, making the case that there is a middle ground between the extreme viewpoints about the future of artificial intelligence -- one in which short-term disruption is followed by long-term benefits of technology augmenting and improving human endeavors. But first, he says, we must ensure equal access to technology, starting with rural broadband, the importance of which is underscored by the rise of remote work in the COVID-19 crisis. Scott spoke with us via phone this week about his vision for the future of artificial intelligence and technology, in advance of the book's release on Tuesday, April 7. Scott will also be participating in a live stream with "Hillbilly Elegy" author J.D. Vance, who wrote the forward to the book, at 10 a.m. Pacific on Monday, April 6.

Get ready for some breakthrough research-based information that, I believe, is revolutionary for hard-training climbers! The topic is sinew training—that is, new training and nutritional interventions shown to promote tendon, ligament, and muscle matrix strength and health. We all know how hard climbing (and training) is on the flexor tendons and ligament pulleys of the fingers, as well as the elbows and shoulders; so what could be more valuable to climbers than strategies to improve sinew health, strength, and performance? This is an information-rich podcast that might require a couple of listens...to determine how you can best apply and benefit from this new material. The next three podcasts will expand on this topic with details on specific training interventions for strengthening (and rehabbing) sore or tweaked tendons and pulleys. If you are a proactive, early adapter kind of person, then this is cutting-edge information I'm sure you'll be all over...like chalk on a crux hold! A final note: If you enjoy this podcast, then please share it with a friend, post to social media, or write a review. Thank you! Rundown 1:00 – Introduction to a new series of podcasts on sinew training—how to develop stronger, stiffer, healthier tendons and ligaments. This is the first of four episodes in the series…breaking new ground that I feel is revolutionary for climbers. 3:00 – Tendons and ligaments are not inert—they change and adapt to training in adulthood, but at a much slower rate than muscles do. And, sinew training requires unique training modalities and nutritional interventions. PhysiVāntage 5:20 – A quick rundown of the next 3 episodes in this series….and the exciting ground I’ll be covering. 7:00 – Eric gives a brief introduction of himself and his background for new listeners. Additional comments of recent advances in training for climbing. 10:10 – A reflection on last year’s series of podcasts on Energy System Training—powerful material for intermediate, advanced, and elite climbers. If you haven’t already, listen to these podcasts! # ??? 13:00 – Introduction to sinew training…and the exciting new sport science I’m bringing to the climbing world in this series of podcasts. 15:30 – The importance of training to avoid injury and stay healthy, so that you can reach your goals! There’s a huge cost to injuries…lost seasons, missed competitions, setbacks and lost seasons. 20:00 – There are decades of knowledge gathered and distributed on muscle training and adaptations…but until recently there’s little research and scant instruction on sinew training. 23:00 – The importance of staying curious! Embracing and applying the latest research is key to progress and breakthroughs in most complex fields/endeavors. 28:00 – Three findings of my two years of research into sinew health and sinew training. 28:30 – Finding #1: Sinew is plastic. Tendons, ligaments, and extracellular muscle matrix change, adapt, and remodel very slowly…and you can play a role in this process! 34:00 – Distinct training and nutritional interventions do influence sinew health, strength, and performance. 35:00 – Finding #2: Tendons can hypertrophy. In certain situations, chronic mechanical loading can lead to slightly hypertrophy over years of exercise. Research has documented that the finger flexor tendons of veteran climbers are up to 50% thicker than non-climbers. 39:00 – Hypertrophy results from long-term training stimulus that slightly degrades collagen…followed by a rise in collagen synthesis during a recovery period of 48 to 72 hours. This cyclic process will gradually build stronger connective tissues given appropriate mechanical loading and rest periods. Nutrition plays an important role in the process, too—more on this in a bit! 41:35 – Sinew has poor blood flow compared to muscles…and there’s scant blood flow to sinew after training. 44:45 – Homeostasis perturbation from long-term overtraining (under-resting and perhaps poor nutrition) leads to disorganized and damaged collagen fibrils…that may be the root cause of the sudden “surprise” finger pulley tweak or onset of painful tendons in the elbows and shoulders. 48:15 – Finding #3: There is a proven nutritional intervention that increases collagen synthesis in connective tissues…and can support sinew recovery and strengthening. Research by Keith Baar and Greg Shaw has shown a doubling of collagen synthesis with vitamin C enriched hydrolyzed collagen consumed 30 to 60 minutes before exercise. 55:30 – Why nutrients consumed after exercise aren’t as effective for nourishing tendons. Synovial fluid diffusion during mechanical loading is the primary method of nourishment to sinew—thus, consuming a glycine and proline rich food before training is the best method of “feeding” sinew. 59:20 – My morning ritual for optimally feeding the tendon and ligaments of my fingers, arms and shoulders—15 minutes to stronger tendons. Supercharged Collagen works! 1:03:00 – You are playing a role in your tendon health…every day! Cease the opportunity to play an active role in the process. 1:04:10 – Introducing PhysiVāntage! Our flagship product is Supercharged Collagen. Based on the research of Drs. Baar and Shaw, this is the most advanced tendon and ligament support supplement on the market. Greg Shaw from Stonehill College continues the conversation with Isabel and myself about spiritual ascent in Plato's Timaeus and what that would look like to someone wishing to undertake it today. Isabel also told us about a poem by a 17th century Latin American poet named Sor Juana, who in her "First Dream" described a sort of shamanic Night Journey with strong parallels to Plato.
Gregory Shaw from Stonehill College and my friend and fellow Classicist Isabel Farias join me this week to discuss the concept of the chora in Plato's Timaeus. Isabel wrote her thesis at Barnard about the Timaeus. Greg authored a paper about the concept titled "The Chora in the Timaeus and Iamblichean Theurgy." In the abstract to this paper, he offered the following brief description of what the concept is: "The chôra described in the Timaeus (52b) is said to be the receptacle through which the world comes into existence. In some mysterious way she is the mother and nurse that allows the Forms to become manifest. Despite being essential to the work of the Demiurge, the chôra is unknowable, Plato says, except through an illegitimate kind of reasoning, more like dreaming than thinking."
The conclusion of my interview with Greg Shaw of Stonehill College about Platonism as a contemporary spiritual path. We talk about how people who are interested in this might move forward with it, and I make plans to start working on this show with him and a couple other magnificent guests with Plato's Timaeus in a few weeks. By request, I give a very short intro to my own spiritual autobiography, which I intend to talk more about next week.
This week Greg Shaw talks with me about Platonism as a spiritual path. As a younger Classicist-in-training I got the impression that there are academics who take Plato seriously as a spiritual guide. So Greg tells me about Platonism and how we can engage with Plato as a guide in our personal spiritual practice.
A Jungian Dream Initiation with Greg Shaw
In this episode we were fortunate enough to talk to the very generous Professor Greg Shaw about Iamblichus and his theurgy. Its obvious that professor Shaw has explored this content on a very deep level. We discussed many topics including the nature and role of Daimons, and the practical application of prayer, meditation and the use of Sunthemata in theurgy. We also touched on the role of Hecate as well as using Jungian models for exploring the practice. Professor Shaw's work: https://stonehill.academia.edu/GregoryShaw
Four years ago Satya Nadella took the helm at Microsoft. Under his leadership, the value of the company has tripled, and some think it could be the first company worth a trillion dollars. The story of the culture and strategy refresh are told in Satya's new book, Hit Refresh, co-authored by Greg Shaw and Jill Tracie Nichols. In this episode of the Getting Smart Podcast, Tom interviews Greg and Jill, who have both have impressive careers beyond co-authoring. Greg and Jill both worked with the last three CEOs at Microsoft and have a great perspective on the ups and downs of the company. Greg also managed public relations at Microsoft in the '90s after serving as a speechwriter in the Reagan white house. In the 2000s, Jill Tracie Nichols led communications for Steve Ballmer and — after a quick transition — became Satya Nadella's Chief of Staff. Tracie is also the founder and CEO of Tracie Group — a company that helps kick-start new companies and helps them build their vision, voice, and brand to successfully make an impact in today's competitive market. In this conversation, Greg and Jill discuss the importance of the cultural refresh at Microsoft (based on Carol Dweck's growth mindset), the challenge of meeting the unmet — and often unarticulated — needs of customers, and valuable tips on writing and publishing. Key Takeaways: [1:26] Tom welcomes Greg and Jill to the podcast, and Greg gives some background about himself. [2:59] What made Greg think of himself as a writer in High School and College? Craig Ross has a passion for finding new and effective ways a team can work together so everyone is rewarded with accomplishment and a sense of success. As the CEO of Verus Global, he speaks with Jim and Jan about the processes and tools that leaders lack most, and how to establish a shared reality within the culture of an organization. Key Takeaways [4:07] One of the biggest challenges that leaders lack today is the inability to line up all on the same reality due to emotions overruling rational thinking. Too many teams function from different realities, which create an inner misalignment. [9:59] Craig presents the idea of an energy map as a way to align on a shared reality through emotionally expressing the problems then focusing on the solutions. [13:47] The dirty fish tank model represents training a leader and then putting them back in a dirty and dysfunctional system. We must clean the tank, aka the system, first so they are swimming in a tank of success and safety. We should develop leaders, but it should be in the context of their teams. [16:23] Craig acknowledges that we are moving into a new era, where the current human disconnection is calling us to become more connected with who we are and what we want out of life. [21:44] From his rich experience of interviewing leaders to see what did work for them, Craig and his co-authors broke what made an exceptional team into three succinct steps: 1. Leaders or a team member can ask the team about a time they have had where they experienced success. 2. Declare from the beginning what is expected from the team’s actions and deliverables from the beginning, and 3. figuring out how to do it. [29:08] A lot of teams are doing big things in terms of delivering numbers, but at the end of the day still not feeling like winners. Craig says that for the most part teams fail due to not leveraging the time and resources they are given. This week's guest Isaac Irvine, a personal branding expert, will talk to us about how we can balance the promotion of our employer's brand (or clients) without neglecting our own. Be sure to tune in for this show, which will be sure to have tweetable nuggets. Join the live chat for an opportunity to ask Issac your questions, too!Isaac Irvine@theisaachttps://isaacirvine.com/Social and Community Manager at GoDaddy. I love talking about #PersonalBrand | #EmployeeAdvocacy | #StarWars. #Podcast host. Opinions are mine. Bridget: Sometimes working for a brand is like a marriage – if you get divorced, then what becomes of your identity? Shawn Pfunder told Isaac his personal brand is ‘cheerleader (for the company)… no one really knows what you’re about’ – he was devastated at the time, because he realized he didn’t have an identity outside of what his personal facebook friends saw https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/isaac-irvine-the-unexpected-personal-brand-coach_us_59371d69e4b04331b6694a4d https://www.cbsnews.com/news/dad-teaches-9-year-old-son-important-lesson-about-bullying/ Ask yourself “what do I really want to be known for” … talk about what you are passionate about! If it lines up with your brand, that’s great, but don’t hide who you are! Bridget: “Don’t be a paper doll.” Sometimes we forget, as people, that it’s okay to talk about ourselves A good place to start – Google yourself and see what comes up – ask if those are the things you want to be known for … if not, it might be time to start giving more attention to your personal brand Think about a few things that you’re passionate about and make a list – then go from there, pick a few topics that float to the top and ask yourself “Can I come up with 10 articles/blog posts about this subject?”For Isaac, the thing that stood out to him that he loved was ‘Star Wars’! He could come up with articles, videos, cosplay etc.. endlessly – it takes 0 effort for him to talk about it! If he is going to be authentic, he is going to talk about Star Wars and engage with others about it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rB0wzy-xbwM Naturally people will want to talk to you on social media about your job because they perceive you as an expert, but you need to remember to open up and be yourself too If you run an agency/business, it’s a really good thing to have your employees active on social – if people are connected to your employees, then they are more likely to trust your business – because they trust their friends and their authenticity. People can immediately tell if someone isn’t being authentic – you can’t fake that sort of thing. The more employees talk authentically about what they’re passionate about, the more it reflects positively on your brand. If you want people to share your content… 1) make it good and worth sharing 2) be authentic Don’t talk about your official job/roles too much on your social accounts, no more than 20% – talk about what makes you – YOU! What are you interested in, what do you care about? That’s what people need/want to see! Get comfortable sharing your stuff! Don’t self-censor so much that you’re no longer who you are. His son started growing out his hair so he could donate it. He was having some trouble getting bullied at school. Isaac asked him what was going on and asked him to talk about it – he only agreed when Isaac offered to record it and share it! (he loves the idea of becoming a popular YouTube video personality). Isaac posted the video and didn’t think anyone would watch it, but the next morning, his phone was overflowing with notifications – the post went viral! Over 14,000 views in 8 hours!!! By that night, there were 2 news trucks outside to interview his son. By the next day it was on CNN, Fox News and Yahoo! By the end of that week it was all over the globe. A lot of people suggested he should start blogs / video series about bullying – there was the temptation to think “this is part of my brand now”. But he’s not an expert on bullying – he’s not going to capitalize on that because it’s not authentic to his brand – it was a great parenting moment, but it’s not a passion of his.https://www.cbsnews.com/news/dad-teaches-9-year-old-son-important-lesson-about-bullying/ When building your brand, ask yourself “is this something I can really carry forward – am I passionate enough about the subject to keep this going?” A lot of people will give you advice about what you should share or how you should communicate – be sure to be true to your own brand – if it doesn’t feel right for you, don’t pursue it. Isaac’s biggest advice is use what feels natural to you – don’t force it. Find the platform that works best for you. It doesn’t have to be Facebook or Twitter, etc…. If you’re comfortable with it and you’re engaging with your followers then stick with it. Don’t be afraid to share who you are on LinkedIn too! People may be following 100 other people in their industry and they are all posting/sharing the same things – if you post something different / unique – you stand out! Jason’s dog instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lincydincydoo/ We live in a world where people change jobs on average every 2 years, so your personal brand matters more than ever! Try asking yourself “If you could do anything – what is it that you’d really want to do?” Listen to that and pursue those passions, make that part of your personal brand “Make your content so good that they want to share it!” – Isaac “Find your tribe, hang out, and make yourself welcome!” – Isaac Cool pick of the week https://www.ILovePDF.com – tools to help you do everything you need to do with your PDFshttps://Unsplash.com – free stock photos for creative use / blogging, also have a wallpaper appInstant Images plugin – One-click Unsplash images for your blog!https://droplr.com/ – lets you capture and share instantly what’s on your screen Show notes contributed by:Greg Shaw – @greg1usaCheryl LaPrade – @YayCherylSherie LaPrade – @HeySherieJames Tryon – @JamesTryon The post WPblab EP92 – Maintaining your personal brand while building another. appeared first on WPwatercooler.
