Two weeks ago, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments on April 30, 2025, about whether Oklahoma can operate the nation's first faith-based charter school. If the Supreme Court decides their way, St. Isidore of Seville would be a virtual, K-12 school run by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Oklahoma City and the Diocese of Tulsa. We should note that a lot of conservatives are with St. Isidore. Alliance Defending Freedom's Jim Campbell was one of the attorneys arguing on behalf of the Oklahoma charter board and the school. Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, a Republican supporter of St. Isidore, said the case “stands to be one of the most significant religious and education freedom decisions in our lifetime.” The conservative legal group Liberty Counsel filed an amicus brief in the case, also in favor of St. Isidore. But not everyone – even on the conservative and Christian side of the aisle — is so enthusiastic. David Dockery is the president of the International Alliance for Christian Education. He told MinistryWatch, “IACE does not have an official position on the St Isidore case since we do not have full agreement on this matter among those who serve on the Board.” Dan Burrell is a longtime Christian education leader. Today he serves as a pastor in Charlotte, N.C., and the chairman of the board of MinistryWatch. His experience includes a tenure as president of the Florida Association of Christian Colleges and Schools. He was also a faculty member at Liberty University's graduate school of education. Burrell said he was “pretty strongly opposed” to government-funded religious schools.

Fr. Vincent Lampert is the designated exorcist of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis. A priest of 33 years, he also serves as the pastor of Saint Michael and Saint Peter Parishes in the Diocese of Brookville, Indiana. In Today's Show I have a friend who has a demon in him, he is trying to have a priest get it out of him. Is it safe to be around him? I accidently took a couple stones from the Colosseum and years since I have suffered a lot, was I cursed? Can someone have a pagan object on their shelf if it was exorcised? Or should it be destroyed, due to causing the sin of scandal or to stop bad things from happening? With the unbelief and atheism around the world, should the Church release footage of exorcisms reveal the spiritual world to them? Can someone praying too much, or praying certain prayers open themselves up to demonic attack? How to deal with someone who has demonic obsession when they hate the Catholic Faith? Has Father ever looked someone in the eye and been able to tell if they might be in a troubled state? Can a traumatic event be the cause of a possession? Can demons read your mind, or do they have to make assumptions on what we are thinking? Are the rites of exorcism in the East and West identical or are they very different? Can a demon use technology to promote evil in the world? I had a friend who passed away. His wife has been heavily involved in the occult. My friend was involved in the occult through his wife. Is there hope for mercy for his soul? Does his wife need to be exorcized? Can a demonic entity be visually seen by the average person? I've been hearing voices tormenting me that the legions of hell are after me. What do I do? How do I know if there is a mental explanation or demonic explanation. Why is it sinful to go to a psychic to speak to deceased relatives? Father have you had any demonic attacks and how do you protect yourself? How can a layman become an exorcist assistant? Does Father have any particular saints he invokes before, during or after an exorcism? Fr. Vincent Lampert is the designated exorcist of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis. A priest of 33 years, he also serves as the pastor of Saint Michael and Saint Peter Parishes in the Diocese of Brookville, Indiana. In Today's Show What is an exorcism exactly? How were you picked to be an exorcist? Can someone be possessed and still go to mass, receive Holy Communion, bless themselves with holy water, etc. or would a possessed person always have an aversion to Holy things? What type of behavior or situation warrants the need for an exorcism? And how serious must a person's afflictions be to warrant a visit from an exorcist? What is the process like when you get referred to a possible possessed person? Do other Christian denominations commonly send possessed people to a Catholic exorcist? Does the Catholic Church have an official position on what the number 666 represents? How do exorcisms differ from the Catholic Church vs the Russian Orthodox? When the demons were cast out of Mary Magdalene, it didn't seem like there were any outward visible signs that she was possessed. Can one be possessed without them or others realizing it due to no visible manifestation of being possessed? Can Father elaborate on the importance of Confession in terms of fighting the demonic? How common are exorcisms in the real world? Popular media would have us believe that things like this happen all the time, but is that really the case? Is it okay to watch movies that have to do with exorcisms? Movies out there like The Exorcist and The Exorcism of Emily Rose? I heard the devil wants you to watch stuff like this. Father, what is the difference between imprecatory and deprecatory prayer relating to exorcisms? I've heard an exorcist mention these terms years ago. When I see fellow Catholics make the sign of the cross, they don't seem to go far enough down when they say “the Son”. It kind of looks like an upside down cross. Isn't the upside down cross a satanic sign? Father, how would an exorcist determine if a place is “haunted,” or I think the official term is “demonic vexation?” Is it a similar process? What is demonic obsession? What goes into an exorcism? Can you walk us through some of the process of the actual ritual? How long does it take to cast out a demon? Are certain types of demonic activity specific to certain areas of the country or gender specific or age specific or more concentrated in areas of our country? Do demons speak to us? Can they read minds? On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Feb. 21 at 7:15 a.m. CT: DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Syria's state TV says an Israeli strike that hit a residential area in the country's capital of Damascus has killed two people. The TV reported that several missiles hit the western neighborhood of Kfar Sousseh on Wednesday morning. The pro-government Sham FM radio station said the strike hit a building near an Iranian-run school. Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes on targets inside government-controlled parts of war-torn Syria in recent years. Israel rarely acknowledges its actions in Syria, but it has said that it targets bases of Iran-allied militants, such as Lebanon’s militant Hezbollah group, which has sent thousands of fighters to support Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Prosecutors say a former FBI informant charged with making up a multimillion-dollar bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden, his son Hunter and a Ukrainian energy company had contacts with officials affiliated with Russian intelligence. Prosecutors said that in a court filing urging a judge to keep Alexander Smirnov behind bars while he awaits trial. But U.S. Magistrate Judge Daniel Albregts allowed Smirnov to be released from custody on electronic GPS monitoring. He is charged with falsely reporting to the FBI in June 2020 that executives associated with the Ukrainian energy company Burisma paid Hunter and Joe Biden $5 million each in 2015 or 2016. LONDON (AP) — Lawyers for the American government are telling a London court why they think Julian Assange should face espionage charges in the United States. Their statements on Wednesday are in response to a last-ditch bid to stop the WikiLeaks founder's extradition. Assange’s lawyers are asking the High Court to grant him a new appeal in the long-running saga. Lawyers for the U.S. say Assange “committed serious criminal offences” that put lives at risk by publishing classified American documents. Assange’s lawyers argued on the first day of the hearing on Tuesday that American authorities are seeking to punish Assange for WikiLeaks’ exposure of U.S. military wrongdoing. Two judges hearing the case are expected to take several weeks to consider their verdict. SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A judge has sentenced parenting advice blogger Ruby Franke to possibly decades in prison after she admitted to physically and emotionally abusing her children. Franke and mental health counselor Jodi Hildebrandt spoke Tuesday during their sentencing hearings after they pleaded guilty to four counts of aggravated child abuse. Hildebrandt will also serve up to 30 years in prison. Franke apologized to her children Tuesday but blamed Hildebrandt for brainwashing her. The women were arrested at Hildebrandt’s house last August after Franke’s 12-year-old son escaped. Franke and her husband launched the YouTube channel “8 Passengers” in 2015 and amassed a large following as they documented their experiences raising six children. MESQUITE, Texas (AP) — As President Joe Biden pushes House Republicans to pass needed aid for Ukraine, he wants voters to understand that nearly two-thirds would actually be going to U.S. factories, like a munitions plant set to open this summer in a gleaming new industrial park in suburban Dallas. Administration officials combed through the foreign aid in the $95 billion bipartisan supplemental funding bill passed by the Senate. Of the $61 billion for Ukraine, nearly $40 billion would go to U.S. factories that make missiles, munitions and other gear. House Speaker Mike Johnson refuses to put the bill up for a vote in the House. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Two men have been charged with murder in last week’s shooting after the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade. Court documents released Tuesday say the men were strangers who pulled out guns and began firing within seconds of starting an argument. Missouri prosecutors said at a news conference that Lyndell Mays, of Raytown, Missouri, and Dominic Miller, of Kansas City, Missouri, have been charged with second-degree murder and several weapons counts. The shooting left one person dead and roughly two dozen others injured. Mays and Miller were shot in the melee and have been hospitalized since. MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Supreme Court has ruled that frozen embryos created during fertility treatments should be considered children under state law. Justices issued the ruling Friday in a pair of wrongful death cases brought by couples who had frozen embryos destroyed in an accident at a fertility clinic. Justices said an 1872 state law allowing parents to sue over the death of a minor child “applies to all unborn children, regardless of their location.” The ruling brought a rush of warnings from groups and advocates who said it would have sweeping implications for fertility treatments in the state. DALLAS (AP) — American Airlines is raising bag fees and pushing customers to buy tickets directly from the airline if they want to earn frequent-flyer points. American said Tuesday that checking a bag on domestic flights will rise from $30 now to $35 online, and it'll be $40 if purchased at the airport. The fee for a second checked bag will rise from $40 to $45 both online and at the airport. American says it hasn't raised bag fees since 2018. American Airlines also says that most customers will have to buy tickets directly from the airline or partner airlines or approved travel sites if they want to earn frequent-flyer points. Corporate travelers won’t be affected by the change. NEW YORK (AP) — Amazon.com Inc. is being added to the Dow Jones Industrial Average, joining Apple, Walt Disney, Walmart and other companies that make up the 30-stock average. S&P Dow Jones Indices said Tuesday that the e-commerce giant will replace drugstore operator Walgreens Boots Alliance in the Dow before the open of trading on Monday. The shift was prompted by Walmart’s decision to do a 3-to-1 stock split, which will reduce its stock’s weighting in the index. The Dow is a price-weighted index, so stocks that fetch higher prices are given more weight. Meanwhile, ride-sharing service Uber Technologies will be added to the Dow Jones Transportation Average, replacing JetBlue Airways. NEW YORK (AP) — The Beatles are getting the big-screen biopic treatment in a Fab Four of movies that will give each band member their own film. All are to be directed by Sam Mendes. For the first time, the Beatles are giving full life and music rights to a movie project. Sony Pictures announced Monday a deal that may dwarf all music biopics that have come before it, with the stories of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr spread out over a quartet of films. The films are expected to roll out theatrically in 2027, with the movies potentially coexisting or intersecting in cinemas. NEW YORK (AP) — A curious criminal case involving handwritten lyrics to the classic rock megahit “Hotel California” and other Eagles favorites is going to trial in a New York courtroom. Opening statements are set for Wednesday. The three defendants are well-established figures in the collectibles world. They're accused of scheming to thwart band Eagles co-founder Don Henley’s efforts to reclaim the allegedly ill-gotten documents. Rare-book dealer Glenn Horowitz, former Rock & Roll Hall of Fame curator Craig Inciardi and memorabilia seller Edward Kosinski have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and various other charges. The trial centers on over 80 pages of draft lyrics to songs from the “Hotel California” album. The 1976 release stands today as the third-biggest selling disc ever in the U.S. HOUSTON (AP) — Former President George H.W. Bush’s speedboat has a new owner. The vessel sports a presidential seal and is powered by three Mercury outboard engines with a combined 900 horsepower. It was used in the waters off Kennebunkport, Maine, which is home to the Texas family's summer retreat. MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin’s Democratic governor, Tony Evers, has signed new legislative district maps into law that he proposed and that the Republicans who control the Legislature passed to avoid having the liberal-leaning state Supreme Court draw the lines. Democrats are hailing it as a major political victory in the swing state where the Legislature has been firmly under Republican control for more than a decade, even as Democrats have won 14 of the past 17 statewide elections. Democrats are almost certain to gain seats in the state Assembly and state Senate under the new maps, which will be in place for the November election. Divers have recovered the body of an 11-year-old girl from a Texas river days after she went missing, and authorities say they are preparing to file a murder charge against a friend of the girl's father. Sheriff Byron Lyons in Polk County, Texas, said Tuesday that the body of Audrii Cunningham was recovered from the Trinity River north of Houston. The girl's family in Livingston reported her missing last Thursday after she failed to return home after school. Authorities say an arrest warrant is being prepared for Don Steven McDougal on a recommended charge of capital murder. Authorities said he's a friend of the girl’s father and lived in a camper on the family property. NEW YORK (AP) — A man suspected in the death of a woman who was fatally bludgeoned in a New York City hotel room earlier this month has been arrested in Arizona, where police say he is a suspect in two stabbings in recent days. New York City police officials said Tuesday that they are seeking to extradite and arrest Raad Almansoori, 26, in the killing of Denisse Oleas-Arancibia, 38, whose body was found by staff on the floor of a lower Manhattan hotel room on Feb. 8. He has not yet been charged. Almansoori was arrested on Sunday in Arizona, where he was later booked on suspicion of attempted murder, aggravated assault and theft of means of transportation. The funeral of a renowned transgender activist in a New York cathedral elicited a denunciation of the event by a senior church official, who called the Mass a scandal within one of the preeminent houses of worship in U.S. Catholicism. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York condemned the funeral of Cecilia Gentili in Manhattan's St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Thursday. The 52-year-old was a leading advocate for transgender people, sex workers and people with HIV. The pastor of Saint Patrick’s says the cathedral only knew of a request for a Catholic funeral mass and has denounced behavior at the event. Gentili’s family denied that the church had been deceived and said the funeral “brought ... joy to the Cathedral," despite the church's anti-trans views. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is managing editor of the national newsroom for Lee Enterprises. First of all, Julie Mastrine is back with us as my co-host, and we are interviewing Father Vincent Lampert. Vincent Lampert is an American Catholic priest and the designated exorcist of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis. As you may imagine, he's seen a lot of things that most of us haven't. We dive into his experiences as an exorcist and what that looks like, what it means, what it doesn't mean, and so on. Are demons real? Is possession real? Does it look like it does in the movies? Why does possession happen? Can we open ourselves up to it, even by accident? Is this just a way to deal with a person that needs psychological help? You will hear all of these issues and more discussed on this episode of the Counterflow Podcast. Sponsor: The Podsworth App: Get 50% off your first order at when you use code BUCK50 at checkout! It's Friday, April 28th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Russia "weaponizing religion" and persecuting churches in Ukraine A new report by the Institute for the Study of War claims that Russian forces are persecuting and repressing the church in areas under their control. The report states that “Russia continues to weaponize religion. … Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian soldiers or occupation authorities, have reportedly committed at least 76 acts of religious persecution in Ukraine.” Russian forces have closed down or taken over 76 places of worship, looted, desecrated or destroyed 13, and have killed or seized 29 religious leaders in occupied Ukraine. Researchers describe the religious repression as “part of a deliberate campaign to systematically eradicate ‘undesirable religious organizations in Ukraine and promote the Patriarch of the Russian Church.” Walter Reed Hospital cancelled Catholic pastoral care Officials with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center have not explained their controversial decision to end a longstanding contract for Catholic pastoral care services at the beginning of Holy Week, reports Baptist News. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese for Military Services strongly criticized the nation's most well-known military hospital for issuing a “cease and desist order” to Holy Name College, a community of Franciscan Catholic priests and brothers who have provided pastoral care to Catholic service members and veterans at Walter Reed for two decades. Oddly enough, the U.S. military has awarded the new contract for Catholic pastoral care to a for-profit, secular company that the archdiocese believes cannot provide adequate care. Archbishop Timothy Broglio said the unnamed firm awarded the contract “is incapable of providing priestly care. It's like hiring a brain surgeon who didn't go to med school.” Whatever the origin and reasoning for the change — Walter Reed officials have been silent. Republican Congressmen put the blame on President Joe Biden who is, ironically, a Catholic. Was Tucker Carlson fired because he urged prayer for America? Despite the fact that “Tucker Carlson Tonight” was the highest-rated show in all cable news with an average of 3.39 million viewers, Fox News fired him recently. Some have wondered whether it was, in any way, related to a powerful extemporaneous speech that he gave to the Heritage Foundation on Friday night, April 21st, shortly after his last show, reports The Washington Stand. The 28-minute speech, available on YouTube, has already been viewed by 3.9 million people. Carlson addressed the transgender movement. CARLSON: “If you have people who are saying, ‘I have an idea. Let's castrate the next generation. Let's sexually mutilate children.' I'm sorry. That's not a political debate. What? That has nothing to do with politics. What's the outcome we're desiring here? An androgynous population? Is that really … Are were arguing for that? I don't think anyone could defend that as a positive outcome. But the weight of the government, and a lot of corporate interests, are behind that. Well, what is that? Well, it's irrational.” He talked about the modern-day abortion movement. CARLSON: “If you're telling me that abortion is a positive good, what are you saying? Well, you're arguing for child sacrifice, obviously. But when the Treasury Secretary stands up and says, ‘You know what you can do to help the economy? Get an abortion!' That's like an Aztec principle actually.” “What's the point of child sacrifice? Well, there's no policy goal entwined with that. No, that's a theological phenomenon. And that's kind of the point I'm making. None of this makes sense in conventional political terms.” Carlson called out the motivating factor of today's federal government. CARLSON: “When the federal government decides that the goal is to destroy things -- destruction for its own sake. ‘Hey, let's tear it down,” what you're watching is not a political movement. It's evil!” The former Fox News Host concluded his speech by advocating for daily prayer for America. CARLSON: “Maybe we should all take just like 10 minutes a day to say a prayer about it. (applause) I'm serious, like, why not? And I'm saying that to you, not as some kind of evangelist. I'm literally saying that to you as an Episcopalian, the Samaritans of our time. I'm coming to you from the most humble and lowly theological position you can. And even I have concluded it might be worth taking just 10 minutes out of your busy schedule to say a prayer for the future. And I hope you will.” Proverbs 14:34 says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people.” Ron Hamilton, known as “Patch the Pirate,” has died And finally, Ron Hamilton, best known as the character, “Patch the Pirate,” in the world of Christian music for children, died on April 19th. Incredibly prolific, he wrote and sang 900 songs as part of a series of character-building, comical, and musical recordings for children produced by Majesty Music. The “Patch the Pirate” albums have sold over two million copies, and the adventures are featured on over 600 Christian radio stations. To date, over a million streams of Patch are reported every month. To the glory of God, countless children have come to know Christ through “Patch the Pirate.” Listen to a portion of one song inspired by Isaiah 6:8. “Lord, I give my life to You. Take control each day. I will follow anywhere. Here or far away. (chorus with kids) “Here am I Lord, send me. Here am I Lord, send me. I will serve You faithfully. Here am I Lord, send me.” After graduating from Bob Jones University, an ophthalmologist discovered melanoma cancer in Ron Hamilton's left eye which required surgical removal. He opted to wear a leather eye patch permanently. This earned him the title “Patch the Pirate” from children everywhere. This seeming tragedy became the greatest ministry blessing of Ron and his wife Shelly's lives. Close And that's The Worldview on this Friday, April 28th in the year of our Lord 2023. Class action cases present significant ethical challenges. Defendants can hold reverse auctions and any of several parties can engage in collusive settlement discussions. Subclasses may have interests that diverge greatly from the class but may be treated the same. Proposed settlements could offer some groups (such as former customers) much greater benefits than others. In one paper presented at an ABA conference on class actions in 2007, authors commented that "competing cases can also provide opportunities for collusive settlement discussions and reverse auctions by defendants anxious to resolve their new exposure at the most economic cost". Defendant class action. Although normally plaintiffs are the class, defendant class actions are also possible. For example, in 2005, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon was sued as part of the Catholic priest sex-abuse scandal. All parishioners of the Archdiocese's churches were cited as a defendant class. This was done to include their assets (local churches) in any settlement. Where both the plaintiffs and the defendants have been organized into court-approved classes, the action is called a bilateral class action. Mass actions. In a class action, the plaintiff seeks court approval to litigate on behalf of a group of similarly situated persons. Not every plaintiff looks for or could obtain such approval. As a procedural alternative, plaintiff's counsel may attempt to sign up every similarly situated person that counsel can find as a client. Plaintiff's counsel can then join the claims of all of these persons in one complaint, a so-called "mass action", hoping to have the same efficiencies and economic leverage as if a class had been certified. Because mass actions operate outside the detailed procedures laid out for class actions, they can pose special difficulties for both plaintiffs, defendants, and the court. For example, settlement of class actions follows a predictable path of negotiation with class counsel and representatives, court scrutiny, and notice. There may not be a way to uniformly settle all of the many claims brought via a mass action. Some states permit plaintiff's counsel to settle for all the mass action plaintiffs according to a majority vote, for example. Other states, such as New Jersey, require each plaintiff to approve the settlement of that plaintiff's own individual claims. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/law-school/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/law-school/support
Demonic Possession. It's not something we usually like to talk about. For nonbelievers, it's the perfect example of the religious clinging to medieval superstitions. For believers, it is an uncomfortable and frightful topic, one few seem comfortable addressing. But is it real? Are there really dark forces lurking around us waiting to overtake our bodies? Do people really manifest ungodly, supernatural powers, or is this just a movie spectacle? In this Halloween special, we bring in Father Vincent Lampert to answer these very questions. If you don't know him, he is the designated exorcist of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis, having performed dozens of exorcisms over the past few decades. We ask him to share his spookiest stories and convince us the devil truly does still haunt our modern world. For Christian and non-Christian alike, you will not want to miss this episode.

Jed discusses exorcisms with the designated exorcist of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis, Father Vincent Lampert. She digs into how he makes a distinction between a possessed person and a mentally ill person, whether some people are more vulnerable to possession and why, actions and behaviors he has witnessed while conducting exorcisms, how he prepares for an exorcism in detail, and the parameters that must be met for the Catholic Church to approve an exorcism. Rev'd Dr Dee Dee Haines spent over ten years on the Isle of Man, leading the Methodist Church at Rosemount in Douglas, and despite being in ministry in various other countries, the Island still holds an incredibly special place in her heart. Back here for a brief visit, and to share in Praying the Keeills Week, Dee Dee joins us to share what she has learned through her present ministry in a Hospice in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she is the Supervisor of Spiritual Care and Music Therapy, with responsibility also for bereavement support. Multi-tasking isn't perhaps a term we would instantly associate with priestly ministry - but it's a reality in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Liverpool, of which the Isle of Man forms a part. Rev'd Canon Aidan Prescott joins in the programme, to explain how it works for him - and for his colleagues. And Ruth Rice is back again, to share another letter from her personal alphabet of wellbeing, in case what's good for her, might be good for us, too. Ruth is the founder of Renew Wellbeing - cafe style safe spaces where everyone is welcomed, supported and gently encouraged to find their own pathway to mental health and wellbeing. We've got Renew spaces at The Well in Broadway, Douglas, and in the Methodist Church in Peel - opposite the Centenary Centre. Emily and Eric interview Wilton Cardinal Gregory, the seventh Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington and the first African American Cardinal—ever!—in the Roman Catholic Church. Cardinal Gregory shares how he first encountered Fr. Rivers, what Rivers' work meant to him as a young seminarian, priest and Bishop, and how he continues to pray in thanksgiving for Fr. Rivers' work and witness. He explains how he came to possess one of Fr. Rivers' pectoral crosses and what it means to him. Hosts and esteemed guest discuss Fr. Rivers as just one of many African American “hidden figures” in the Catholic Church and how important it is to remember and acknowledge their gifts to the Church. Finally, Eric and Emily process the conversation with some follow-up thoughts and share feedback from two listeners. Episode photo by Peter Ringenberg/©University of Notre Dame. As soon as the severity of the Russian attacks on Ukraine was known, at the end of February this year, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Liverpool launched its #liverpool4ukraine fundraising appeal. To date (end April) it has already raised well over £100,000.00 through individual donations, and scores of fundraising events. It also inspired a group of people from the Liverpool Archdiocese to actually take a consignment of aid to the Polish/Ukraine border, where they handed it over to Bishop Gregory Komar in the Diocese of Sambir-Drohobych in the Lviv region. When the volunteer drivers saw the need in the region, they vowed to return with medical supplies, body bags and other essential items, as requested by Bishop Gregory and his team. So, just 4 weeks later, four more consignments of essential aid is leaving Liverpool over 24th and 25th April. On today's programme, I talk with Mike Sharkey who was on the first trip, and returns this weekend, accompanied by some first-time volunteer drivers, and Dave Lyon shares his most memorable moments from the first trip he made. Gill Boggan, Director of Finance for the Liverpool Archdiocese explains why she feels privileged to have a place as a volunteer driver on this second mission and as the vans were being packed on Friday morning, there was a chance to pause and to pray for the safety and success of this mission. Rev'd Canon Aidan Prescott - one of the senior clergy involved in the administration of the Archdiocese - leads the prayers and blesses the vans. There's also an opportunity to hear from Father Taras Khomych, a Liverpool-based priest in the Ukranian-Greek Church. Both he and his wife lecture at Liverpool Hope University, and Father Taras provides pastoral care to Ukranian-Greek congregations in Liverpool, Salford and Stoke on Trent. He leads worship for his congregation in Liverpool in St Oswald's Roman Catholic church in Old Swan, and took part in the time of prayer for the success of the relief expedition. He also talked with me about the reality of having parents in Lviv, who fear for what each new day will bring, and how the support of non-Ukrainians - showing their love by welcoming refugees into their homes and raising money for essential medical supplies - is making the Ukrania people stronger in the defence of their country. Plus - there's music from Aled Jone's CD - BLESSINGS - a beautiful, prayerful, reflective selection of hymns, texts and Scripture mixed with music, and reflecting a range of faiths including Roman Catholic, Muslim, Quaker, Buddhism and Christian. There's also our notice board - if you have items to add, and/or would like to choose your favourite hymn for inclusion in a future programme, email me - judithley@manxradio.com I'd love to hear from you!

Fulton v City of Philadelphia (2021) was a United States Supreme Court case dealing with litigation over discrimination of local regulations based on the Free Exercise Clause and Establishment Clause of First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The specific case deals with a religious-backed foster care agency that was denied a new contract by the City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania due to the agency's refusal to provide service to married same-sex couples on religious grounds. In a unanimous judgment on June 17, 2021, the Court ruled that the city's refusal due to the agency's same-sex couple policy violated the Free Exercise Clause. The case was decided on narrow grounds outside of the Supreme Court's prior decision in Employment Division v Smith, which had previously ruled that neutral laws of general applicability could not be challenged for violating religious exemptions. Instead, in Fulton, the court ruled that services like foster care contracting were not public accommodations covered by Smith, and thus were subject to strict scrutiny review. Because the city allowed for exceptions to be made in its anti-discrimination policy for foster care certification, the Court deemed the city's policy to violate the foster case agency's free exercise of religious under Smith. Background. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia runs the Catholic Social Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (CSS), which has operated a foster care agency in Philadelphia for over 100 years. The foster care agency had been registered with the city up through 2018. The Philadelphia Inquirer ran an article on March 13, 2018, which described the experience of a same-sex couple that went to an information session at Bethany Christian Service, which operated its own foster care service separate from CSS. At the session, the couple were told they would be wasting time because there was a policy for refusing to serve same-sex couples. In following up, the reporter discovered that CSS held a similar policy, and had spoken to the city's Department of Human Services, which oversaw regulating foster care services, to notify them of these issues. The Commissioner of Human Services for the city, Cynthia Figueroa, followed up on the report with both CSS and Bethany Christian Services to confirm its veracity towards discrimination against same-sex couples. Figueroa also reviewed the standard with other registered foster care agencies for the city, many also who were also run by religious organizations, but found none of the others had similar restrictions against same-sex couples. Within a few days of the article's publication, the city suspended CSS's contract; the Bethany Christian Service had been able to work a deal to accept foster care from same-sex couples to maintain theirs. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Saints Zechariah and Elizabeth are the parents of Saint John the Baptist. Saint Zechariah was an Israelite priest, and Saint Elizabeth his wife was a cousin of the Virgin Mary. They were an old couple who were childless, which was a great shame in their culture. But God miraculously gave them a son in their old age. Saint Zechariah did not believe when an angel told him the news, and as a result was struck dumb until the child was born. We will read from the account of Saints Zechariah and Elizabeth from the Gospel of Luke, and read reflections on the lives of the saints from homilies by Archbishop William Lori from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore, and Father Ted Bobosh from the Orthodox Church of America's Christ the Savior/Holy Spirit church in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Covid-Closed Communion “That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.” “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.” — 1 COR 11: 27-30 Taking Holy Communion is a life-and-death matter - at least if we believe the Bible. St. Paul, writing to the Church at Corinth blames the death of some parishioners on the fact that they communed “without discerning the body.” And this is certainly a part of why the Church has always practiced closed communion - until quite recently, that is. The Roman Catholic archdiocese of Chicago is concerned about people becoming weak, or ill, or even dying as a result of coming to Mass. And so they are carefully checking people at the door. Not to make sure that they “discern the body” in the sacrament, mind you, but rather to see if they have received a Covid-19 shot. Nobody will check to see that you are a Christian, a Roman Catholic, or a believer in the Real Presence when you present yourself to receive the body and blood of Christ. The priest will not ask you. You may well be a Satanist looking for a consecrated host to desecrate, and nobody will vet you. And neither will the lay man or woman who is distributing the blood of Christ - though the chalice is once again being withheld by the papal church because of Covid. Again, someone could become weak or ill, or even die. Hence the caution. Of course, not just Roman Catholics, but all Christians who confess the Real Presence, seem to be more concerned about people getting sick or dying from Covid than from unbelief. It is as though we don't believe what is in the Scriptures that receiving the Lord's Supper without belief can be fatal. Theology used to be the Queen of Sciences, but now Scientism has become the Queen of Theology. It seems that we believe more in the real presence of viruses than the real presence of Jesus, and that now the fear of the microbe is the beginning of wisdom. In the ancient church, if you traveled to another diocese to receive the Holy Sacrament, you were vetted. You were expected to produce a letter from your priest. Today, in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, something similar is happening - only the priest who must sign your letter wears a lab coat instead of an alb. In fact, for many Roman Catholics and other Christians alike, there is a new pope. His name is Anthony. Larry BeaneMay 28, 2021 Facebook0TwitterLinkedIn0Tumblr0 Likes

On Monday, December 1, 1958, a fire broke out at Our lady of the Angels in Chicago, shortly before classes were to be dismissed for the day. The fire originated in the basement near the foot of a stairway. The elementary school was operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago and had an enrollment of approximately 1600 students. A total of 92 children and 3 nuns ultimately died when smoke, heat, fire, and toxic gases cut off their normal means of egress through corridors and stairways. Many more were injured when they jumped from second-floor windows. You DO NOT want to miss this one. David Mehr is the Assistant Vice President at CCS Fundraising, an organization that got its initial start in 1947 as a Community Counseling Service. It has a long history of providing philanthropic counsel and service to a spectrum of organizations and healthcare, the arts, and academia, medical schools, hospitals, public broadcasting, and conservation groups. David is currently working with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee on the Love One Another campaign. In this episode… Philanthropy is a team sport, but many organizations treat it as a one-person game, one that revolves around the development person. On the other hand, the development person finds it difficult to communicate effectively with leadership which leads to a struggle in fundraising. According to David Mehr, there are specific leadership and fundraising practices that boards, CEOs, and development professionals need to imbibe to address these problems and succeed at philanthropy, In this episode of Philanthropy212, David Mehr of CCS Funding talks to host Penny Cowden about the critical role of leadership and fundraising practices in order to drive success in any philanthropic organization. They also talk about the need for stable work amongst professionals, how leaders can create a culture of philanthropy and development, and more. Stay tuned.

Dr. Brett Salkeld is the Archdiocesan Theologian for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Regina Saskatchewan and the author of "Transubstantiation: Theology, History and Christian Unity". You might assume that this is simply a book about a historical theological dispute, and it is, but I think this book is a clear presentation of the history of the conflict surrounding our understanding of the word "God". We use the word "God" as if we know what we're talking about, or that we all mean the same thing when we say the word. I'm convinced we don't and I believe this conflict is at the heart of the great falling away of the church in the West. The issue at hand in the case of Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Juan Puerto Rico v. Feliciano is whether courts in Puerto Rico can confiscate assets of Catholic entities to fulfill pension obligations to current and former Catholic school employees. The petition for certiorari lists the question as: “Whether the First Amendment empowers courts to override the chosen legal structure of a religious organization and declare all of its constituent parts a single legal entity subject to joint and several liability.” Erin Murphy joins us to discuss the important implications of this case.Featuring: Erin E. Borley Rectory - England Dubbed as the “most haunted house in England,” the Borley Rectory sits on the outskirts of England, in the desolate little town of Borley, close to Suffolk. Built by Reverend Henry Bull in 1862, this structure was built in place of an older rectory that had mysteriously burned down years prior. Legend has it that a 13th century Benedictine monastery once stood on the gorunds. One of the monk had fallen in love with a nun who served in a nearby parish and when the two tried to elope together, their love affair was discovered. 4. The Haunted Vicarage - Sweden First built in 1876, this old vicarage sits quietly in the small village of Borvattnet in Northern Sweden. For over 90 years, the vicarage lay peacefully but in 1927 that all began to change. Then head chaplain, Nils Hedlund had moved in during that time and reported experiencing various things he could not explain. In one instance while doing laundry, he went to the attic to gather more of his clothes and when he looked outside, he could see an unseen force pulling clothes from off the line. 3. Chaonei No. 81 - China Also called the Chaonei Church, this old French Baroque building with its distinct red brick walls has become celebrated as “Beijing’s most haunted building.” Historically, it’s unknown who built the actual structure but over the years it’s has served as various government offices during the early years of the People’s Republic of China. By the 60s, the Red Guards stayed in the building but for some reason they made a hasty departure – some say because of the structure’s haunted status. Today, the building is in the care of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Beijing, hoever it still remains abandoned. 2. Rose Hall - Jamaica Standing beautifully with its stunning Georgian architecture, you wouldn’t think the Rose Hall Mansion was haunted. By day, it’s a stunning tourist attraction with its white stone walls and impressive stature. But by night, the 650-acre property becomes the object of horror stories and scary tales. 1. Monte Cristo Homestead - Australia In the Australian town of Junee in New South Wales sits a wonderful and charming Victorian home known as the Monte Cristo Homestead. This two-story manor features a gorgeous ornate wraparound balcony and sits on top of a scenic hill overlooking the gorgeous town below. So there were the 5 MOST HAUNTED HOUSES IN THE WORLD Some houses get passed down to various owners through the years without incident. Others, like the ones on this list, have had such horrific pasts, that the original owners, or those they scorend, refuse to ever leave.
Dr. Lefebure will be presenting on his recent work regarding spirituality and how he believes it is the key to future inter-religious relations. The significance of inter-religious relationships is that they challenge our held perspectives, allowing us to see not only our fellow human in a different light but the world. Dr. Lefebure takes on the challenge and benefits of fostering inter-religious relations through a Catholic lens. Catholic stages of spirituality he presents can be used as a helpful framework when trying to overcome the hurdles of fostering and maintaining a healthy inter-religious dialogue. At every stage of spirituality when comparing religions there will always be differences and similarities, and full unity of belief and practice will never be an achievable goal but in creating this dialogue and acknowledging different perspectives we can further achieve a healthy community of world religions of mutual understanding and respect. Leo D. Lefebure is the Matteo Ricci, S.J., Professor of Theology at Georgetown University and a priest of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago. He is the author of four books, including Revelation, the Religions, and Violence and The Buddha and the Christ. His next book will be Following the Path of Wisdom: a Christian Commentary on the Dhammapada, which is co-authored with Peter Feldmeier. He is an honorary research fellow of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
