Voices of our Herbal Elders: Inner-Views with Rosemary Gladstar
Join Rosemary Gladstar as she invites herbal elders to share the stories of their journey into the lush world of plants in these Inner-Views.In this third episode of Voices of our Herbal Elders, I am honored to introduce the enchanting Sara Katz—co-founder of Herb Pharm, the leading maker of liquid herbal extracts in the United States, and former president of United Plant Savers. In this captivating conversation, Sara, the spirited co-founder of Herb Pharm, unfurls the tapestry of her herbal journey, sparkling with challenges embraced as opportunities, deep connections with plants, and tales of collaboration with other herbal enthusiasts. For over 45 years Sara Katz has thrived amidst the forested mountains and wild plants of southern Oregon. There she co-founded and developed the company Herb Pharm and continues to consult and serve on Herb Pharm's board of directors. Involved with United Plant Savers since its beginning, Sara served as UpS board president for 9 years. Sara remains dedicated to her lifelong passions for all things wild, medicinal plants in particular, and taking care of plants, people and our precious planet.
This is such a gorgeous and juicy summer episode that I am thrilled to share! I have wanted to talk about herbalism and holistic nutrition on the podcast for a while now and having Carley Nadine on the podcast to share her expertise is perfect, she inspires me so much and her information and knowledge is so grounded and approachable - it really is wellness that works! In our beautiful conversation today we dive into:Carley's recent apprenticeship at Herb Pharm, her eat-pray-love year, connecting to herself and knowing she needed to immerse herself into the herbalist world. After being a city herbalist for so long she knew she needed to go out into the vast landscape and fully dive into the herb world. Divinely timed, living in community with 8 other women, working with the land and having a strong connection and communication with the plant world. Plant sits: taking a tincture of a plant you don't know and working with it to uncover what it is and how it works with your energetic body.Sitting with hawthorn, potent for the heart, opening of the heart. The mind-body connection when it comes to holistic nutrition. Developing a spiritual practice over time and seeing how much that impacted her health. Feeling like she needed to be perfect when it came to food, looking at all problems as a one-juice-away from achieving the ultimate health, being all about the physical body. Finally realizing how much our mind is connected to our health, how our gut is connected to the brain. Hormone health and women being disconnected to their cycles and living in a masculine world - this connection to stress and dysregulation. We have 4 cycles in our menstrual cycle, seen as the 4 seasons - mimicking nature and the moon. We have this internal need to be connected to plants, we have an internal herbalist inside of us. 4 cycles: menstruation is our inner winter, the follicular phase is the springtime, our ovulatory is our inner summer, the luteal phase is our inner autumn. Discussing Carley's favorite herbs for each of our menstrual seasons to support us during each time - such as dandelion root, which represents the sun, the moon and the stars. We discuss cramping in periods and if it's normal for us to experience. Looking at it like our bodies are trying to tell us something. Could be a sign of inflammation and trying to remove seed oils from the diet to see if there is a difference. A lovely tip for excess estrogen is eating a raw carrot salad. We discussed Carley's thoughts on oat milk and my experience of feeling anxiety when drinking oat with my coffee. We discuss gorgeous summer infusions and Carley's recipes she shares on her instagram like her spruce tip and nettle vinegar. She discusses using herbs in our vinegars for our food and great for the gut!We talk about what is inspiring Carley at this time which is nature!I am so excited for you to hear this jam packed episode filled with so many health and herbal tips! After a year and a half of co-creating with a community of educators, elders, herbalists, doctors, researchers, priestesses, and storytellers we're excited to finally share what we've been brewing.....
インスタグラム https://www.instagram.com/dear_naturalist/ メール dearnaturalist.contact@gmail.com
インスタグラム https://www.instagram.com/dear_naturalist/ メール dearnaturalist.contact@gmail.com
インスタグラム https://www.instagram.com/dear_naturalist/ メール dearnaturalist.contact@gmail.com
BeeConservation Day @ Herb Pharm dearnaturalist.contact@gmail.com またはインスタグラムのDMへ https://www.instagram.com/sayaka_lean/

https://www.instagram.com/dear_naturalist/
In this first week of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, Cultivating Place speaks this week with medicinal and habitat gardener Sayaka Lean of the Herb Pharm in Southern Oregon. Informed by her own Japanese cultural gardening traditions, Sayaka is the lead gardener of the Herb Pharm’s public medicinal plant display garden (the Botanical Education Garden), where she cultivates more than 500 native and non-native medicinal plants from around the world. Sayaka engages the garden as well in community collaborations with United Plant Savers, whose work is to protect and raise awareness about the medicinal plants of North America, and as a Flagship Farm for the Oregon Bee Project/Atlas out of Oregon State University. It is good medicine for the season. Listen in! Cultivating Place now has a donate button! We thank you so much for listening over the years and we hope you'll support Cultivating Place. We can't thank you enough for making it possible for this young program to grow even more of these types of conversations. The show is available as a podcast on SoundCloud, iTunes, Google Podcast, and Stitcher. To read more and for many more photos please visit www.cultivatingplace.com.
“I'm so grateful to be living in times like this that demand so much of me.”You know, we've spent a lot of time learning about plants. Have you ever stopped to wonder what we could learn from plants? Scott Kloos has. And the plants have taught him many lessons about such things as reciprocity, nurturing, and cultural evolution (just to name a few). Scott shares with us his deep passion for searching out ways to transition our current cultural relationship with plants (and all things, really) from a transactional way of being to a more relational way of being; a view in which we cease to view our landscape as a commodity and instead return ourselves as living participants within that landscape. Towards the end of the episode, Scott shares with us one of his plant songs (more of which can be found here). So let us all cast our glance up from the ground and outward, breathing in the bigger, wider world of plants. Scott Kloos is an herbalist, ceremonialist, author, wildcrafter, plant medicine maker, and aspiring integral ecologist. Although he says the plants founded it, he stewards The School of Forest Medicine as well as Cascadia Folk Medicine, maker of high-quality herbal extracts from the native plants of the region. He authored Pacific Northwest Medicinal Plants: Identify, Harvest, and Use 120 Wild Herbs for Health and Wellness. Through his writing and his facilitation of co-created spaces of learning and healing, he explores various ways of working with plants and their medicine, relationships with our nonhuman kin, and ecologically integral modes of engaging with and thinking with the community of life. In addition to his many years of ongoing study within green-walled groves of learning, he completed the 1999 Herbal Apprenticeship Program at the Herb Pharm in Williams, OR, and in 2000, he attended a nine-month Community Herbalist Training Program with Christopher Hobbs. He spent seven years studying the human psyche (his own and others) in Paul Levy's Awakening in the Dream group. In 2009, he studied Traditional Western Herbalism: An Intuitive and Energetic Approach with Matthew Wood in Portland, OR, and in 2018 he earned a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies at California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, CA.Remember, different bodies react to herbs in different ways. Herbs work biologically with your body to support healing and overall well-being.Herbs offer a natural, effective, long-term approach to wellness. Whether you want more energy, less anxiety, better sleep, improved immunity, digestive ease, or to support the different organs in your body (brain, lungs, heart, liver, etc.), an herbal approach is one way to achieve your health goals.Whereas synthetic vitamins are often not properly absorbed by the body, herbs work biologically with your body to support healing and overall well-being. Some ways you can incorporate herbs into your daily regimen are through liquid extracts, tea, or using herbs and spices in meal preparation. Listen as Alexis Durham, Herbalist & Botanical Affairs Supervisor for Herb Pharm, joins Andrea to discuss the healing benefits of herbs, which herbs are the best for different conditions, and what makes Herb Pharm special.
Alexis Durham is the in-house Herbalist and Botanical Affairs Supervisor for Herb Pharm, and an instructor for the Herbaculture Internship program. She earned her B.Sc. in Herbal Sciences from Bastyr University and began teaching about herbs and herbalism while working for the American Botanical Council. An opportunity to learn more from the plants themselves led her to Horizon Herbs and southern Oregon, where she fell in love with gardening and seed-saving. Alexis then returned to Bastyr University as their Garden Supervisor and directed the Certificate in Holistic Landscape Design program, teaching students to create healing landscapes with medicinal and edible plants. She has also coordinated several educational events including Bastyr University's Herb and Food Fair, the American Herbalists Guild's 23rd Annual Symposium, and an upcoming conference benefiting United Plant Savers to be held at Herb Pharm in June 2019. It's that time again! Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCalls where we answer our community's questions each and every week! Here are today's Q&A topics: Irene: Hello, I have type 2 diabetes. I was diagnosed about 3 years ago. A few days ago I ordered your Protocal package and I'm looking forward to start using it. I will also be doing the three day fast that I recently heard on one of your podcasts. My diabetes numbers average about 325 each morning. I am on Metformin and Glipizide. The doctors have tried other meds that got my numbers in the 180 range, but they made me very sick. When I eat healthy, my numbers average about 250 in the mornings. Right now I exercise doing Zumba for one hour, twice a week. What can I do immediately that can lower my numbers? Thank you for taking the time to answer this question. Sally: Hi Dr. Cabral, thanks for taking the time to answer these questions! My issue- I have no trouble falling asleep but wake up multiple times a night- sometimes every 1.5. I don't feel low energy but I just want to be able to sleep the full night! And what makes it worse, is I'll wake up, go to the fridge and grab something small (even nuts or chocolate) and go back to bed. Therefore, I know I can't be doing the 12 hour fast each night and letting my body regenerate. If there are any tips you have to staying asleep throughout the night (I tried CALM before bed, tart cherries, yoga, limiting water before bed and nothing has helped), I would truly appreciate it. Megan: Hi Dr. Cabral, I am a recent new listener and look forward to listening to your podcasts every day. Thank you for all that you do for this community. Your passion for medicine is incredibly inspiring and truly gives me hope I will feel well again. I am an intensive care RN and in graduate school to become a functional nurse practitioner. Similar to your story, I have pursued this career path partly because of my own health issues. I developed methane dominant SIBO 3 years ago during nursing school, a very stressful time, after years of birth control, minocycline for acne, and a recent bought of kidney stones. Other past medical history include chronic sinus infections as an undergraduate and an abnormal Pap smear. Since then I have taken 3 rounds of Xifaxin, worked with a nutritionist who advised me to eliminate FODMAPs, and followed a strict paleo diet for a year with moderate success. I am no where near as sick as I was but still suffer with occasional painful unpredictable gas, bloating and incomplete BM’s despite my seemingly perfect nutrition. I am currently working with a practitioner who ran labs that showed I was estrogen dominant with low T3, and vitamin D. My testosterone is also low. I am taking a probiotic, EPA/DHA, DHEA, a multi-vitamin, D3, and adaptogens for adrenal support. My practitioner doesn’t believe I have SIBO again but instead is treating my leaky gut with low-dose naltrexone. Since starting this therapy I feel better, but still not 100%. I have difficulty with word finding, low libido, staying asleep at night (side-effect of LDN?), I grind my teeth, and suffer each month with wild PMS and moderate anxiety. My practitioner believes the LDN will heal my gut but my question for you is can I be doing more to feel better faster? I started the Dr. Shulze’s intestinal cleanse hoping that will help also. I am 27 years old, getting married next year, and feel like a fraction of myself most days. I eat well, exercise and take care of myself. I am tired of feeling like everything I do, all the supplements I try, all the doctors I see, is useless. I want to get better and I am willing to do the work. What more can I do to finally feel well? Thank you so much for your time and I look forward to your next podcast. Megan Cara: Hi Dr. Cabral, Thank you for always answering my questions. I tell EVERYONE I meet about your podcast! My daughter is almost 2 and since she started solids her breakfast has been mainly scrambled eggs, avocado and sometimes fruit. I had read to wait on giving them grains until they had their molars. I also just recently saw your oatmeal breakfast recipe and I'm curious what your thoughts are on grain and fruit food combining. Another very well known and versed holistic practitioner I've worked with said to never combine grains and fruit because they compete for digestion and result in fermentation. She also says "eat melon alone, or leave it alone." Thank you! Cara: Hi Dr. Cabral, We're flying to the east coast from the west coast in a month and we have an almost 2 year old that has flown twice. This time she will have her own seat because we're bringing the car seat. Since flying with a little one, I use a spray hand sanitizer and wipe down the arm rests, belt buckle, tray table and window to try and keep her from getting the plethora of germs that are left behind. Is this excessive, or smart since these areas are never cleaned? I usually add liquid echinacea and elderberry by Herb Pharm before traveling in addition to her daily spoonful of probiotic and camu camu. Any other recommendations, or traveling protocols you follow? I know some people who put a touch of tea tree oil right in their nose as a precaution. I can only imagine how I'm going to handle potty training and public toilets when we cross that bridge - hahaha! In gratitude, Cara Elle: Hello! I was diagnosed with HSV-2 a little over 2 years ago and I am currently eradicating the virus from my body. I am slightly changing my protocol after listening to your recommendations on fighting the virus. I would like to know, how do I prevent the spreading of the virus to my partner? I have not been sexually active in fear of spreading the virus through viral shedding. What recommendations do you have while eradicating the virus? M: My mom is 85 and her body is strong and fit -- yet she has about 3 second recall and neurologist says dementia/Alzheimer's. she's been on namenda and arricept for 6 years. She also has glaucoma. She always lived a clean life with no alcohol and did yoga and took vitamins. Is there anything I can do now -- I give her a B 12 everyday? Should I have her tested for heavy metals? She lives in assisted living. Thanks for all you do! Thank you for joining me today and I look forward to speaking with you tomorrow and answering more of our community's questions! - - - Show Notes & Resources: http://StephenCabral.com/603 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral
Welcome back to the weekend Cabral HouseCalls! It's great to have you and I can't wait to get into today's community questions - Let's get started! Anonymous: Hi Dr Cabral, Long-time listener (and asker of questions). Here’s my entire health history, in a TINY nutshell: - Lifelong history of terrible nutrition: I was raised on sugar and have craved (and consumed) sugary, fatty, terrible food for as long as I can remember. Despite this poor diet, I have always been athletic and obsessed with strength and fitness. - For my entire adult life (I am 37) I have experienced recurring fungal skin infections, all over body, and bloating. - 5-6 years ago, I started suffering from persistent anxiety attacks. I did nothing to treat the anxiety, other than learn not to freak out during an attack. Over time (6-7 months) the attacks, pretty much disappeared. - 9 months ago, out of nowhere, I developed a nasty wheezing cough, that would come and go, and which was, eventually, diagnosed as LPR. I started to rely on an albuterol inhaler for my asthma. I have tried many approaches to treating this, including eliminating stress, taking melatonin at night, and drastically changing my diet, all to limited success. SO…anxiety, fungal infections with bloating, LPR. I am, now, one month into your candida and bacterial overgrowth protocol. Without doubt, this has made a difference: I’ve lost fat, I don’t tend to need my inhaler, my fungal skin infections seem to be pretty much non-existent, and (this is a little embarrassing) my wife no longer suffers a yeast infection EVERY time we have sex: this was the case for years. (Is this a definite sign of candida?) I work out 6 days a week (weights 3 times, cardio 3 times), practice intermittent fasting (16/8), and am allowing myself 1 (healthy) cheat meal per week, including a small dessert. (I do, also, have 1 cup of black coffee every morning...I hope this is okay?!) Anyway, all in all, I am doing much better than I was. However, I do find that these symptoms persist: tension in diaphragm (anxiety?), lump in throat, excessive burping, and tightness in lungs. But, here’s the interesting thing that I hope you can shed some light on: my symptoms seem to be (and this has always been the case) manifesting as part of a cycle. What happens is, I’ll go about a week with virtually no symptoms, and then the symptoms start to kick in, and gradually worsen, over the course of about 7-10 days. Typically, it’ll start with the tension in the diaphragm, then burping and throat issues, then some asthma-like symptoms of tightness in the lungs (although I don’t seem to get the wheeziness that used to be there), and anxiety is always accompanying these. After this 7-10 day period, the symptoms start to slowly go away, and I have a decent week or so. I don’t change my diet or lifestyle, in any way. It feels like as soon as I start to think “hey, maybe I’m starting to heal,” the symptoms return. It’s incredibly frustrating and demoralizing. With all of that being said, I wondered if this persistent cycle of symptoms is something you’re familiar with, and/or if my description tells you something that I haven’t considered. Also, how much of a role do thoughts (both negative and positive) play in this? Is it possible that ALL of my symptoms are caused by stress/negativity? I ask because I have tended toward negative, depressed, thoughts for as long as I can remember, and I definitely feel physically worse when I’m depressed/stressed. At this stage, I feel that my best course of action is to continue the candida/bacterial overgrowth protocol, work on stress-reduction, and hope that the symptoms start to become less and less over time. Thanks so much for doing what you do. Your podcast has been an absolute life-saver and continues to help me through some very dark times. LaSandra: Hello, Dr. Cabral! Thank you so much for your commitment to helping everyone you possibly can. Your health recovery story is such an inspiration to me! I'm writing to get your advice about Meniere's Disease. For an entire year, I suffered from daily migraines and vertigo. I saw a naturopath who suspected that the root cause was extreme adrenal fatigue as I had undergone a 10 month span of extreme stress just before the vertigo started. I have since been able to manage my migraines better through stress reduction, dietary changes and acupuncture. However, I have occasional bouts of vertigo that seem more Meniere's in nature. I get debilitating vertigo with hearing loss and tinnitus in my right area. The episode lasts a day or so, and then I recover completely which is very different from the ongoing milder vertigo I experienced with migraines. It seems that western medicine doesn't have much to offer when it comes to vestibular issues. I would love any advice you have as the general attitude about Meniere's seems to be that you can't treat it or control it (aside from reducing sodium intake) and just have to hope for the best, but you'll likely go completely deaf. I should also mention that I have Celiac and have had chronic IBS for many, many years. I just finished doing your Food Sensitivities/Candida test and am looking forward to healing my gut with the help of your team. I do believe that my gut health is related and possibly is the key to fixing this. Your story and podcasts give me hope that I can affect change and be healthy. Thank you so much for your help! Cara: Hi Dr. Stephen Cabral, I have a 21 month old daughter who I am still nursing (during the day only) and she eats a nutrient dense diet. She typically starts off with a scrambled egg, avocado and fruit. Lunch is usually leftovers. Dinner is wild salmon, grassfed bison/beef, free range chicken and broccoli and sweet potatoes. I give her Klaire labs infant probiotic mixed with a dash of camu camu and some drops of Herb Pharm kids echinacea daily. I got into the habit of giving her echinacea when I was boosting her immune system before traveling on a plane. I also give her the Herb Pharm Kids elderberry occasionally. Is this ok? Can the echinacea be overdone? Additionally, she was born at 36 weeks 2 days albeit a life saving crash cesarean ...we had major blood loss, she received two blood transfusions, she was incubated and taken via ambulance to a children's hospital where she was cooled to 91 degrees for 72 hours. Which prevented stroke, seizure, cerebral palsy etc. She is perfect but she was low in iron at 10 months - I fixed that with food - combinging iron rich foods, grassfed liver, beef, bison with camu camu, molasses and at the end floravital. We raised it from 8.6 to 13.3 in 3 months and without medicine! Does she also need a multi Vitamin soon? THANK YOU for your work and house calls!! Jamie: Hey Dr. Cabral! For a while now I've been having issues drinking tea(green, black and Mate). Even when drinking it after a meal I still get bloating, heart burn, belching and brain fog. But Coffee I have no issues with. Although I used to never have an issue with tea I found out after testing that I have Sibo and H. Pylori. I'm on the CBO protocol for it and although I took a break from drinking tea, I read that black and green tea have compounds that are good against fighting H. Pylori but when I tried to re-introduce them the symptoms came right back. Also I'm pretty sure that from all these gut issues I have developed a histamine intolerance. Will I be able to drink tea again? If so, how long should I wait before I re-introduce. Thanks!!!! Sara: Hello, I'm hoping to tap into your wealth of health knowledge to help my son. He is a commercial airline pilot. He gets sick with cold-like symptoms quite often. What is a good health kit he could travel with so he's armed when he begins to feel the sinus, ear and nasal congestion creeping up on him? He usually comes down with strep once a year as well as the cold symptoms I listed above even more often. Maybe a daily immune boosting protocol would be in order too. Thanks so much! God bless you. It’s spring in the Pacific NW and for many that can mean misery. If you suffer from seasonal allergies it is also the season of allergy medicine advertising, promoting many over the counter medications designed to ease your symptoms. If you suffer with allergies, you're certainly not alone. According to the US National Institutes of Health, more than 50 million Americans live with allergies. This represents the 6th leading cause of chronic disease in the United States, is higher among children, and has rapidly increased over the past 15 years. But, did you know that the treatment of allergies with herbs is effective and one of the oldest medicines, going back on record over two thousand years. The World Health Organization estimates that 80% of people worldwide rely on herbal medicines for some part of their primary healthcare. Today we are speaking about seasonal allergies, the symptoms, the causes and how herbal medicine can treat and relieve suffering. Most people treat aphrodisiacs as folk fantasy. Don’t be deceived. When libido flags in women, there are many herbs that can help revive it. The biochemistry of plants like ginseng, dong quai, fennel, shilajit—even a few essential oils can bring powerful sexual regeneration to your body and intensify your libido. It’s your own individual response to specific herbs that holds the key to which aphrodisiacs are best for you. Loss of your libido can have many different causes. So when turning to herbs for help in the sexual arena, you will need to experiment a bit to find which plants work best for you. But watch out. It can not only be easy to create an experience of intense desire; it can be just as easy for a woman to end up fertilized by the results of it. Shatavari—Asparagus racemosus This Ayurvedic female rejuvenation tonic is also an excellent aphrodisiac as well. It’s been used for thousands of years as a female tonic to correct menstrual and menopausal imbalances as well. Traditionally known as “She who has 1,000 husbands”, it was long believed to give a woman the strength and passion to handle 1,000 lovers. Organic shatavari root extract contains a full spectrum of active and synergistic constituents, including saponins containing shatavarin. Use only this herb which is naturally grown or ethically wild crafted so it contains no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Wild Yam—Dioscorea villosa Often restores a woman’s libido so successfully that I wouldn’t advise you to use it unless you have a sexual partner. You can take it as a tincture—½ to1 teaspoon in water twice a day—or as a dried herb in capsules, 4-6 capsules a day. I have known women who take as many as 10 capsules a day, but less than this works very well for most. American Ginseng—Panax ginseng Is as good a raiser of libido in women as it is in men, despite the assumption that it is a male plant. It is particularly useful for post-menopausal women. Drink it as a tea three or four times a day. Be patient it takes time to do its work. Shilajit—known by many names in many countries Has been used as an aphrodisiac and female fertility treatment for centuries. One of the most powerful “herbal” substances known, it has been used for thousands of years all over the world. It comes in a thick, tar-like form containing over 80 minerals from Himalayan rocks. It is anti-inflammatory, anti-stress and anti-anxiety, as well as anti-aging. Be sure to buy only the highest grade of Shilajit, wild crafted and gathered from the Himalayas, since only the finest will bring you your desired goal. Fennel—Foeniculum vulgare Is replete with plant steroids. In animal experiments it has been shown to raise the libido of both males and females. You can take it as a tea. Bruise a teaspoon of organic fennel seeds and pour 2 cups of boiling water over them. Steep for 5 minutes, strain and drink. Caution: Do not use fennel oil on your body when you are pregnant, as it has been known to cause miscarriage. Other simple herbs which you can add to your foods with a good reputation for enhancing libido are parsley, fenugreek—great to sprout and eat in salads—ginger, and anis. Even coca, from which chocolate is made, is a mild aphrodisiac. You can also use certain essential oils to enhance libido on the night. Massage your body and your partner’s with a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil or apricot oil to which you have added one of the aphrodisiac essences: Clary sage, ylang ylang, rose, or jasmine. Of course, this is for external use only. It’s powerful stuff—you need only 1 drop of an essential oil to each teaspoon of carrier oil. A capsule of vitamin E squeezed into the oil when you mix it helps keep it fresh longer. Next week on our Sacred Truth Podcast, we’ll be looking at some of the best aphrodisiacs for men, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, check out the links below for the best products you can find.
