Click here to send me a quick message :) We hold so much in our wombspace. Stories, trauma, imprints, births, losses, past sexual experiences, and even more energetic qualities like our creative energy or feelings of safety. So, even if we aren't experiencing any issues "down there" we could still benefit from some regular caretaking just to tend our tissues. But if you *are* someone (like many of us) who's got anything from menstrual cramps to fertility challenges to trauma history to endometriosis or PCOS or irregular cycles or bladder pain or even creative blocks...it's likely that some extra presence and care would be a powerful option for you. Naturopathic physician, herbalist and bodyworker, Dr Kathryn Kloos has synthesized many years of working hands-on and clinically with thousands of patients and has developed her own practice of supporting multi-layered healing in the wombspace with a variety of techniques, including something she calls "uterine unwinding."Combining hands-on presence in the pelvic bowl with somatic dialogue, uterine unwinding is a practice that encourages a client to listen deeply to what's present in the pelvic bowl and invites both awareness and possibility to change the imprints or stories that are alive there.Unwinding and retelling the stories in those tissues. We talk about all of this and much more, including some actual cases from Kathryn's practice in this week's episode.Listen to learn:why Kathryn finds bodywork to be a key to pelvic carehow her own personal cancer journey exemplifies her somatic dialogue techniquewhat uterine unwinding is and how you might explore some of this practice in your own body either solo or with a practitionersome inspiring and hopeful stories of womb, fertility and trauma healingabout the possibility of generational trauma getting stuck in our tissuesone simple practice to ground you in your body and pelvisResources:Today's shownotes: Get links to Kathryn's online course, website, moreSign up for the Natural Contraception course waitlist (coming soon!)Episode 10: Traditional womb healing practices w Sondra HamiltonEpisode 61: How to heal trauma with embodied listening w Dr Emily WilsonEpisode 119: Clearing, releasing, tending womb trauma w Dr Sarah WylieIf you loved this episode, share it with a friend, or take a screenshot and share on social media and tag me @herbalwombwisdom.  And if you love this podcast, leave a rating & write a review! In 2015, we still used those table speakers for conference calls. Remember those? Kind of looked like a spaceship. I had just started at Imagine H2O, and the first external call I had on my second day was with someone who was very highly regarded by my colleague Ivy Nguyen, who is now a BIV IC member. Hi, Ivy! That someone was Steve Kloos, partner at True North Venture Partners, previously at GE Water and Osmonics. And Ivy was really right.  Over the following eight years, Steve became a friend, mentor, colleague, and through an annual seminar for IH2O companies that he ran, probably the single biggest influence on how I and the team thought about the science of early stage company creation and entrepreneurship. I was so grateful for his support through the formation of BIV Fund I, and it was a wonderful moment when we saw the possibility of working together. Along with Christine joining, BIV has now entered a new phase, and one that sets us up excellently for the long term. We have a three-person partnership of complementary skills and backgrounds, and it's tremendously exciting to have Steve join us. He's an exceptionally smart, kind person with a hell of a resume and is one of the highest integrity individuals I've had the pleasure of working with.  Subscribe to The Fundamental Molecule here: https://www.burntislandventures.com/the-fundamental-molecule For the full show notes, transcript, and links to mentioned content, check out the episode page here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-fundamental-molecule/id1714287205 ----------- Steve Kloos' career in the water field, his expertise in membrane technology, and his significant contributions at Osmonics, GE, and partner at True North Venture Partners is explored. Josephine Baran is currently the Director of Outward Bound Canada's Training Academy for Outdoor Professionals which is seeking to create access and training opportunities for groups that have been traditionally under-represented in the outdoor industry. She fell in love with Canada's natural spaces when she moved here as a teenager and firmly believes we are the best version of ourselves when we are outdoors. She led the National Community team for Mountain Equipment Co-op which had the largest series of races in Canada and is happiest when she is running the trails with her dogs, paddling at her cabin in Northern Ontario or snowboarding in the Rockies. About the Training Academy The Training Academy has two levels of fully funded programming, that we are able to offer at no cost to our participants; the Foundations and Essentials level. Foundations offers 6 days of workshops with a strong focus on growing outdoor technical skills and building comfort in the outdoors. There is a 5 day outdoor journey option also. It truly is about creating access for groups and communities that have been traditionally under-represented. The Essentials program offers 10 days of workshops that focuses on a broad range of topics like mental health first aid, trauma informed outdoor leadership and more. It also provides four days of technical training at a basecamp workshop and a ten day outdoor journey. This level readies participants to enter the outdoor industry with the skills to work with the diverse and evolving needs of our population. She recently spent 57 days in the Himalayas attempting to summit Mount Everest (the highest peak in the world) as well as Mount Lhotse (the 4th highest) in a 24 hour period.  This too was a record attempt and if successful Remy would have been the first South African to do this double summit in 24 hours.   However, after spending 57 days in the Himalayas and reaching 8000m - the Death Zone - Kloos' expedition was cancelled due to dangerous weather conditions, 2 cyclones and temperatures below -30.. which made the risk of frost bite and death too high to proceed.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“I'm so grateful to be living in times like this that demand so much of me.”You know, we've spent a lot of time learning about plants. Have you ever stopped to wonder what we could learn from plants? Scott Kloos has. And the plants have taught him many lessons about such things as reciprocity, nurturing, and cultural evolution (just to name a few). Scott shares with us his deep passion for searching out ways to transition our current cultural relationship with plants (and all things, really) from a transactional way of being to a more relational way of being; a view in which we cease to view our landscape as a commodity and instead return ourselves as living participants within that landscape. Towards the end of the episode, Scott shares with us one of his plant songs (more of which can be found here). So let us all cast our glance up from the ground and outward, breathing in the bigger, wider world of plants. Scott Kloos is an herbalist, ceremonialist, author, wildcrafter, plant medicine maker, and aspiring integral ecologist. Although he says the plants founded it, he stewards The School of Forest Medicine as well as Cascadia Folk Medicine, maker of high-quality  herbal extracts from the native plants of the region. He authored  Pacific Northwest Medicinal Plants: Identify, Harvest, and Use 120 Wild Herbs for Health and Wellness. Through his writing and his facilitation of co-created spaces of learning and healing, he explores various ways of working with plants and their medicine, relationships with our nonhuman kin, and ecologically integral modes of engaging with and thinking with the community of life. In addition to his many years of ongoing study within green-walled groves of learning, he completed the 1999 Herbal Apprenticeship Program at the Herb Pharm in Williams, OR, and in 2000, he attended a nine-month Community Herbalist Training Program with Christopher Hobbs. He spent seven years studying the human psyche (his own and others) in Paul Levy's Awakening in the Dream group. In 2009, he studied Traditional Western Herbalism: An Intuitive and Energetic Approach with Matthew Wood in Portland, OR, and in 2018 he earned a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies at California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, CA.Remember, different bodies react to herbs in different ways. As more and more adaptive personalized learning solutions enter the market, educators and schools are increasingly looking to use them to augment their instruction. The subject of reading is seen by many as an area that could benefit substantially from this technology. In recently published study, researchers from the University of Cincinnati and North Carolina State University, Raleigh looked into the MindPlay Virtual Reading Coach (referred to in the study as MVRC). They investigated its use in three separate Midwestern districts where students, like most American learners, were often one or more grade levels behind in literacy and reading skills. While the researchers found MindPlay significantly outperformed traditional instruction and other reading tools to improve literacy, none of the teachers using it wanted to continue to do so once the trial was over. The findings indicate that there’s more to edtech than academic outcomes. In this special episode of The Plant Path, I got a chance to interview a fellow PNW herbalist, Scott Kloos, founder of Cascadia Folk Medicine, The School of Forest Medicine and author of Pacific Northwest Medicinal Plants: Identify, Harvest, and Use 120 Wild Herbs for Health and Wellness. This was a really fun conversation, as Scott and I discuss a wide range of methods of working with the medicinal intelligence of plants. From how they have the ability to heal us spiritually, to the best wildcrafting and medicine making practices, to what it really means to be an herbalist. Scott and I really have a lot in common in the way we see medicinal plants and the practice of herbalism, even though we approach it from slightly different angles, which to me is fascinating.  The big thing I appreciate about his perspective and approach, is that it's geared towards healing the whole person (body, spirit and soul) through utilizing the whole plant. Scott truly honors the chemical and spiritual sides of herbalism, and understands the greater context of plant medicine, in that the healing work we do contributes to the healing of the Earth as a whole. ———————————— Scott Kloos—ceremonialist, author, wildcrafter, plant medicine maker and practitioner, animist, singer of plant songs, and aspiring integral ecologist—guides The School of Forest Medicine and Cascadia Folk Medicine and is author of Pacific Northwest Medicinal Plants: Identify, Harvest, and Use 120 Wild Herbs for Health and Wellness. Kloos is a scholar of political sociology and social movements at Stanford University, where she is a PhD candidate. What has gotten us to this point of high political polarization and high income inequality? McAdam and Kloos offer a novel answer to what divides us as a country that focuses on the role social movements have in pulling parties to the extremes or pushing parties to the middle. They argue that the post-World War II period was unusual for its low levels of social movement activities and the resulting political centrism of the 1950s. The Civil Rights movement that followed – and the related backlash politics of the Southern Democrats – pushed the parties away from the center and toward regional realignment. Along the way, activists re-wrote party voting procedures that reinforced the power of vocal minorities within each party, thereby entrenching political polarization for the decades to come.
