Kimmy opens up about how becoming a mom changed her whole creative vibe and the struggle to stay true to herself while juggling all the expectations that come with being an artist (and a human). We get into the ups and downs of figuring out who you are in the art world, dealing with pressure, and why being kind to yourself is the secret sauce. If you've ever wondered how to keep your creativity alive while life keeps throwing curveballs, this one's for you.Takeaways:In our conversation, we explored the complexities of artistic identity and the struggles inherent in labeling oneself within the creative domain. We discussed the significance of accessibility in art and the importance of making it relevant to everyday people, particularly those from diverse backgrounds. How parenting impacts one's artistic journey, likening it to a transformative residency that reshapes priorities and creative output. We get into the concept of delegated performance art as a means of engaging others in the creative process, highlighting community involvement in art.The necessity of archiving conversations about art was stressed, aiming to foster deeper connections and understanding among artists and their audiences.Lastly, we acknowledged the tension between artistic integrity and the commercial aspects of art, advocating for a balance that supports both creativity and community engagement.Chapters:• 00:21 - Introduction to the Show• 00:42 - The Journey of an Artist• 12:20 - The Evolution of Artistic Expression• 15:40 - The Evolution of My Podcast Journey• 24:12 - Navigating the Challenges of Being an Artist• 32:00 - The Importance of Titles in Creativity• 36:42 - The Impact of Parenthood on Artistic Practice• 42:32 - Navigating High School Choices in Chicago• 46:06 - The Pressure of Art and Marketing• 57:49 - The Nature of Artistic ConversationsAbout Kimmy:Kimmy (not Kim) Noonen is a multi-disciplinary artist, podcast creator, and mother. If you find yourself torn between rationality and spirituality, science and mysticism, facts and belief; The Lectern's inaugural 8-week course will offer you a new lens through which to reflect on these dilemmas. Click here to enroll: https://lectern.teachable.com/p/einstein-and-spinoza-s-god1 “What does it really mean to be authentic, and can this virtue be meaningfully understood and measured across psychology and philosophy?” John Vervaeke, Gregg Henriques and Matthew Schaublin embark on a discussion covering the concept of authenticity. The discussion explores authenticity as one of the premier virtues of modernity, comparing it with autonomy, and tracing its roots through romanticism and existentialism, notably discussing Heidgegger and Kierkegaard. Greg introduces psychological perspectives and client-centered therapy influenced by Carl Rogers, while Matthew shares insights from his empirical research on dispositional authenticity carried out at the University of Chattanooga. The trio also touch on the tensions between self-identification and participation, self-alienation, cognitive fluency, and the societal quest for authenticity, proposing a nuanced and dynamic understanding of the true self. Gregg R. Henriques is an American psychologist. He is a professor for the Combined-Integrated Doctoral Program at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, US. Matthew Schaublin is a master's candidate in psychology at the University of Chattanooga, with a four-year research focus on authenticity. His work blends empirical psychology with philosophical and classical inquiry, investigating how dispositional authenticity is expressed and experienced. —- Notes: 0:00 Introduction to the Lectern 0:45 Exploring the Concept of Authenticity 3:30 Greg's Perspective on Authenticity 5:00 Matthew's Research on Dispositional Authenticity 9:00 Theoretical Foundations of Authenticity 12:30 Philosophical and Clinical Perspectives 24:30 Relational and Psychological Dimensions 36:30 The Evolution of Self-Definition in Modernity 38:00 The Greek Roots of Authenticity 39:30 Modeling Authenticity and Personality 43:15 Rationalization and Authenticity 44:45 Tensions in Authenticity: Identification vs. Participation 49:00 The SAFE Model of Authenticity 55:00 Empirical Studies on Authenticity and Agency 1:06:30 Key Takeaways and Future Directions —-- Connect with a community dedicated to self-discovery and purpose, and gain deeper insights by joining our Patreon. https://www.patreon.com/johnvervaeke The Vervaeke Foundation is committed to advancing the scientific pursuit of wisdom and creating a significant impact on the world. How can people connect with others without merging into them or letting them take over? How can we differentiate ourselves from one another while remaining connected in meaningful ways? These are some of the questions that Being Human host Steve Cuss poses to his guests, Grace Liu and Cory Elisabeth. The founders of Pursue Inner Growth, a coaching and counseling service in Indonesia, Liu and Elisabeth share rich and nuanced thoughts on how culture, place, and heritage shape who we are. Cuss speaks with Liu and Elisabeth about the unique challenges Southeast Asians face, the difference between an individualistic culture and a communal one, and how people can deal with both individual and communal shame. Their conversation covers some of the variances in Western and Asian psychology, such as what the idea of setting boundaries looks like in different cultures. Episode 6-404 Self-Definition What we think about ourselves, what we say about ourselves matters. It impacts our behaviors, and it exudes from us and impacts our interaction with others. When people think positively about themselves and what they have to offer, they are more likely to gain the support of others. Next time you get ready to make a self-deprecating comment, or you speak negatively to yourself think about the impact that can have on you and those around you. Think about the confidence and power that can come from self-definition and tap into being self defined, to being seen the way you want to be seen. 2023 Book Publications: Leading Self, Leading Others – 20 Inspiring Topics for Personal and Team Leadership and Professional Growth – available on Amazon and Kindle LiftOff to Landing – Revealing Stories of Strangers in Flight – Flight 2023 – available on Amazon, Kindle and Audible https://www.audible.com/pd/B0BZWZQQNH/?source_code=AUDFPWS0223189MWT-BK-ACX0-346228&ref=acx_bty_BK_ACX0_346228_rh_us #DoYouHaveACoupleOfMinutes #Inspire #Think #Learn #Grow #Fulfilled #LiveFulfilled #Liberate #Illuminte #Amplify #PositiveChange #Leadership #Mentor #Coach #Develop #Lead #Listen #Encourage #Feelings #Intent #Expectations #PetrinaGooch #Petrina #TakeTheGoodTakeTheBad #Perfection #Imperfections #ShowingUp #ShowUpOpen #Self #SelfImprovement #SelfCare #Change #Listen #Understand #Communication #Awareness #enlightenment #problemsolving #decisionmaking #relevance

The brief years of young adulthood are a vitally important period of our development. These are the years when we learn how to self-define. A time when we take the ideas and beliefs that were offered to us by parents, peers, and society and really sort out what we think about those ideas, and how we want to relate to them as we go forward. As most adults will remember, this can be a turbulent process, for both young adults and their parents. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Isaac Burton, an incredible young college student, to discuss several topics that are on the minds of young adults. During the conversation, we discuss dating, career choices, the importance of self-definition, and more.

This week, Esther Belin speaks with Diamond Forde, who joins us from Asheville, North Carolina, which she describes as a sort of homecoming. One of five recent recipients of the 2022 Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowships, Forde's debut collection, Mother Body, is described as “an intersectional exploration of the trauma and agency held within a body defined by its potential to mother.” Today we'll hear from a new series of poems by Forde, which appear in the December 2022 issue of Poetry. The poems continue an exploration of maternal lineage, this time centering Forde's grandmother and addressing the complex processes of self-definition, self-reclamation, and biomythography. Belin and Forde also discuss the practice of joy and how poetry is an “assertion of love.”

When you look up a word in the dictionary, it gives you the definition of what that word means. It's pretty much set in stone (for the most part). It's the same as we look at ourselves. But what would happen if you were able to re-define who you are, what you stand for and how you react to certain situations? Dive in. Some great tips in this episode. In the second part of our conversation on robot rights, we explore three Christian responses to calls for robot personhood, spanning the spectrum of hostility to optimism about the development. What Biblical truths and doctrines can we turn to as we wrestle with what is a fundamentally brand new dilemma? And how would our theology and practice as believers change should conscious, intelligent, autonomous robots come to live among us? You can find plenty of resources on the question of personhood and robotics on John's website: www.johnwyatt.com John co-edited a multi-author book last year called The Robot Will See You Now which brought together Christian thinkers and writers to consider how the rise of robotics and AI might affect everything from the arts to healthcare. Your choices define you. Are you a thinker? A doer? A combination of both?
What labels have you slapped on yourself because you think you should show up a certain way? In this episode, we explore ways you've limited your potential with these definitions. It's time for a rewrite- one that aligns with who you are not who you think you are supposed to be. Think about how you see yourself. Does this match with how others see you? Does it resonate with your core self? If you are living with labels applied to yourself, you are restricting your potential. Instead, you burden yourself with all of the expectations and obligations that come with the label. When you allow yourself to be defined according to someone else's idea of what you "should" or "must" do, you get drawn into codependency. This makes you responsible for other people' outcomes, at the expense of what you really need or want to thrive. Get out of the box you were told you had to navigate within by rediscovering the essential you. People read the labels you place on yourself- rewrite the self definition and you show up differently in the world. Welcome to Episode 95 of the Red Ink Revival Leadership Podcast. In today's episode Patrick is continuing with one of the most important factors for successful leaders, self-differentiation. The past 3 episodes have focused on these concepts, starting with episode 92 (The Leader's Kryptonite: Emotional Fusion Versus Differentiation) giving the context for the series. If you have wondered why you can't seem to get the ‘wins' you work so hard for, even after training with conferences, consultants, books, podcasts, and mentors, this episode series is for you! Episode 95 takes us into the following: * Review of self-differentiation and giving context to leadership challenges. * Continued exploration of the 3 components to mature in self-definition or identity: A-R-T. * Review of awareness and responsibility (AR of ART) as the first two components of self-definition or identity. * Revealing the third component of self-definition or identity: truth. * How truth is about honoring your own values, perspectives, opinions, convictions, interpretations, beliefs, desires, and goals. * How identity is the ability to know and commit to what you believe is true, not being closed to opposing ideas, or being inflexible. * How identity is about the right to define yourself, define your own thoughts and beliefs, and to clarify what it means to be yourself. * How identity empowers you to know what you think is important, what is valuable, and what you believe to be moral and true. * How you come to know what is true: objectivity versus subjectivity. * Exploration of free moral agency as God's gift to choose what you believe is true. * How emotions and feelings are beneficial gifts to serve your awareness, but how they are unreliable sources to anchor you in truth. * The benefit of Scripture as an authoritative source for truth. * How Biblical identity is not your unwilling acceptance of God's forced enmeshment, but your willing acceptance in pursuit of truth. * Biblical texts to reinforce ideas and benefits of truth around emotional states. * Exercises to build your truth-muscles and instincts. ▷ Visit the Red Ink Revival website: https://redinkrevival.com https://www.redinkrevival.com/blog/categories/podcast ▷ Connect with Patrick on social media: FB: https://www.facebook.com/redinkrevival FB: https://www.facebook.com/patricknorris IG: https://www.instagram.com/redinkrevival/ IG: https://www.instagram.com/norris.patrick/ LI: https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrick-norris-4b733412/ ▷ Subscribe to the podcast, then rate, review, and share it! Welcome to Episode #94 of the Red Ink Revival Leadership Podcast. In today's episode Patrick is continuing with one of the most important factors for successful leaders: differentiation. Self-differentiation is a human flourishing code cracker. If you have wondered why you can't seem to get the ‘wins' you work so hard for, even after training with conferences, consultants, books, podcasts, and mentors, this episode is for you! This episode takes us into the following: * Review of Dr. Murray Bowen's Systems Theory. * Sharing of quotes from Pastor Steve Cuss's work about Systems Theory from his book, Managing Leadership Anxiety: Yours and Theirs. * Discussion regarding the distinctions between enmeshment/fusion, detachment/distance and self-differentiation. * Continued exploration of the 5 components to mature in self-differentiation: A-R-T-S-Y. * Exploration of the ART (awareness, responsibility, and truth) of self-definition and emotional identity. * Biblical texts to reinforce ideas of intentional responsibility around emotional states. * How self-awareness is a critical component of identity, but without responsibility it makes a person entitled, self-absorbed, and toxic. * How God is looking for growth and maturity, rather than flawlessness and perfectionism. * How self-definition comes from within, not by being adaptive to other's desires, emotions, and projections. * Examination of pro-depressive circuits and empowerment (dopamine) circuits from Dr. Andrew Huberman's work, a neuroscientist from Stanford University. * Great exercises to build the responsibility muscles and instincts. ▷ Visit the Red Ink Revival website: https://redinkrevival.com https://www.redinkrevival.com/blog/categories/podcast ▷ Connect with Patrick on social media: FB: https://www.facebook.com/redinkrevival FB: https://www.facebook.com/patricknorris IG: https://www.instagram.com/redinkrevival/ IG: https://www.instagram.com/norris.patrick/ LI: https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrick-norris-4b733412/ ▷ Subscribe to the podcast, then rate, review, and share it! Riley Holloway was born in Los Angeles, CA (1989). He currently lives and works in Dallas, TX. Growing up, Holloway developed an early interest in art, learning from his mother, an artist herself. He attended The Art Institute of Dallas and the Florence Academy of Art.He is best known for his dynamic work and fresh look at figurative art. His images are often accompanied by text and personal references embedded within the work. Holloway uses a traditional oil painting technique and bold lines to create depth within the portraits. There is a wonderful counterbalance of softness and masculinity seen in the works. We discuss his technique to painting during a pandemic, the concept of self publishing, and the individual as a catalyst. Holloway’s aesthetics create familiar spaces rich in storytelling, free from constraints, and true to his subjects. His content is rich in drama, history, and intimacy.www.rileyholloway.comInstagram.com/hollowayfineartFacebook.com/hollowayfineart Run time: 29 minutesHost, Earlina Green Hamilton
What is Feminism?is a range of social movements, political movements, and ideologies that aim to define and establish the political, economic, personal, and social equality of the sexes. Feminism incorporates the position that societies prioritize the male point of view, and that women are treated unjustly within those societies. Efforts to change include fighting against gender stereotypes and establishing educational, professional, and interpersonal opportunities and outcomes for women that are equal to those for men. Source - Wikipedia What is Womanism? The term was first coined by American author Alice Walker (The Color Purple) in the short story COMING APART - 1979 Womanism is a social theory based on the history and everyday experiences of women of color, especially black women. It seeks, according to womanist scholar Layli Maparyan (Phillips), to "restore the balance between people and the environment/nature and reconcile human life with the spiritual dimension". Source - WikipediaWhat are the differences between both? The difference between womanism and feminism being; womanism is "family-oriented" and focuses on race, class, and gender, while feminism is "female-oriented" and strictly focuses on biological sex-related issues women and girls face, globally. The different types of FeminismKinds of Feminism.Liberal Feminism.Radical Feminism.Marxist and Socialist Feminism.Cultural Feminism.Eco-Feminism.I-FeminismBlack FeministBlack feminism is a philosophy that centers on the idea that "Black women are inherently valuable, that [Black women's] liberation is a necessity not as an adjunct to somebody else's but because of our need as human persons for autonomy." Black feminist theory contends that black women have an acute understanding of the negative impacts of sexism, racism, and class discrimination. Furthermore, race, gender, and class discrimination are all aspects of the same system of hierarchy, namely the "imperialist white supremacist capitalist patriarchy". Due to their inter-dependency, they combine to create something more than experiencing racism and sexism independently.Proponents of black feminism argue that black women are positioned within structures of power in fundamentally different ways than white women. In the early 21st century the tag "white feminist" gained currency to criticize feminist who avoid issues of intersectionality. Critics of black feminism argue that divisions along the lines of race or gender weaken the strength of the overall feminist movement and anti-racist movements.Africana Womanism"Africana womanism" is a term coined in the late 1980s by Clenora Hudson-Weems intended as an ideology applicable to all women of African descent. It is grounded in African culture and Afrocentrism and focuses on the experiences, struggles, needs, and desires of Africana women of the African diaspora. It distinguishes itself from feminism or Alice Walker's womanism. Africana womanism pays more attention to and focuses more on the realities and the injustices in society in regard to race. The 18 characteristics of African Womanism are the following: Self-Naming, Self-Definition, Family-Centeredness, Wholeness, Role Flexibility, Adaptability, Authenticity, Black Female Sisterhood, Struggling with males against oppression, Male Compatibility, Recognition, Ambition, Nurturing, Strengthen, Respect, Respect for Elders, Mothering, and Spirituality.Where do men fit into all of this?Africana men can embrace an Africana womanist approach. According to Tolagbe Ogunlege (1998), "Referring to a man as a male-womanist is not an anomaly or rarity, and bestowing gender-specific title on individuals of the opposite sex has been practiced by Africana peoples for millennia. For example, among the Yoruba, an exceptional woman who has made significant contributions to the educational, socioeconomic, and/or spiritual growth and development of her family and community is referred to as a man-woman or obinrin bi okunrin." Ogunlege further explains that among the Lebou people of Senegal, a man who governs according to ancient customs is referred to as the "Mother of the Country". February 2012by Lisa Renee How can I go forward if I don't know which way I am facing? How can I go forward if I don't know which way to turn? How can I have feelings if I don't know what I am feeling? - John Lennon Dear Ascension Family, During these last months and leading into 2012, our life circumstances have been pushing us to pay attention to participate with our inner selves and those closest to us, especially those that are sharing our living or working space. Unfinished or unresolved family dynamics and their ancestral patterns have been coming out of the woodworks - left, right and center! Every direction leads you back to squarely face that hidden place where you start getting squirmy. It is okay to get squirmy or not know where you are going, despite the declaration of insanity by some of those around you. Personal resonance and inner alignment is where it has got to be right now, no matter how eccentric, odd or unavailable you may appear to others. This is an incredibly potent time that will define the foundation of the longer term in the years to come. Regain your personal power and some sanity by admitting the squirm factor is quite high right now and it's all going to end up okay. Really. All of that pressure has been to push to the surface some pretty unpleasant issues that brought us to this next stage of Self Definition. We are moving into a completely new Chapter of Life, without having the 'actual death' of the physical body.
The Secret of Self Definition Corporate mission statements all sound alike because companies stand for pretty much the same things: “We believe in honesty, quality products, a positive work environment and a fair profit.” Yawn. You and I write mission statements because we want people to like us. Our pattern-recognizing, touchy-feely right brains see a newcomer and ask, “How are we alike? What makes us the same?” But the deductive-reasoning left brain looks for discrepancies and anomalies, “How are we not alike? What makes us different?” Consequently, we cannot set ourselves apart according to what we stand for since we stand for pretty much the same things. We set ourselves apart by what we stand against. I'm not suggesting you become a complainer, a picketer or a self-righteous prig. I'm suggesting only that you make clear to the world what you don't do. What you exclude – not what you include – is what defines you. 1. There's a nationwide fast-food chain that refuses to be open on Sundays. Can you name it? 2. BeautifulPeople.com – a dating site for narcissists – excludes anyone who is overweight. (Gasp!) This January they kicked out 5,000 members whose post-Christmas photos revealed they had gained a few pounds during the holidays. 3. A fitness center became the fastest growing franchise in history by excluding half the population. They opened their second location just 15 years ago. Curves – for women only – now has more than 10,000 locations in 70 countries. 4. “No drinkin' – No dancin' – No smokin' – No spittin' and No cussin'. Now if you don't mind what we Don't have… I'm sure you'll like what we DO have…. good, clean, family entertainment, every weekend, year 'round.” – Kentucky Opry 5. The Heart Attack Grill excludes from their menu anything that might be good for you. But they're happy to bring you a Quadruple Bypass Burger with Flatliner Fries and unfiltered cigarettes. “Taste Worth Dying For.” 6. Martin – that most highly revered of guitars – won't make electric instruments. Acoustic only. 7. Geppetto's Workshop is a toy store that excludes anything made of plastic or requiring batteries. I'm not asking whether or not you agree with these companies. I'm not even suggesting that we debate whether their exclusions are ultimately good or bad for business. (I'm fairly certain that Chick Fil-A would make more money if they opened on Sundays.) My point is merely to illustrate that an organization's exclusions define it far more clearly than its inclusions. Does your company exclude anything? If so, what do you exclude… and why? Take a moment to answer these questions and you will have stepped onto the path that leads to Corporate Differentiation. Let the journey begin. Roy H. Williams
