This episode was originally published on our sister podcast, web3 with a16z. If you're excited about the next generation of the internet, check out the show: https://link.chtbl.com/hrr_h-XCWe've heard a lot about the premise and the promise of prediction markets for a long time, but they finally hit the main stage with the most recent election. So what worked (and didn't) this time? Are they really better than pollsters, is polling dead? So in this conversation, we tease apart the hype from the reality of prediction markets, from the recent election to market foundations... going more deeply into the how, why, and where these markets work. We also discuss the design challenges and opportunities (including implications for builders throughout). And we also cover other information aggregation mechanisms -- from peer prediction to others -- given that prediction markets are part of a broader category of information-elicitation and information-aggregation mechanisms. Where do domain experts, superforecasters, pollsters, and journalists come in (and out)? Where do (and don't) blockchain and crypto technologies come in -- and what specific features (decentralization, transparency, real-time, open source, etc.) matter most, and in what contexts?  Finally, we discuss applications for prediction and decision markets -- things we could do right away to in the near-future to sci-fi -- touching on trends like futarchy, AI entering the market, DeSci, and more.  Our special expert guests are Alex Taborrok, professor of economics at George Mason University and Chair in Economics at the Mercatus Center; and Scott Duke Kominers, research partner at a16z crypto, and professor at Harvard Business School  -- both in conversation with Sonal Chokshi. As a reminder: None of the following should be taken as business, investment, legal, or tax advice; please see a16z.com/disclosures for more important information.  Resources:(from links to research mentioned to more on the topics discussed)The Use of Knowledge in Society by Friedrich Hayek (American Economic Review, 1945)Everything is priced in by rsd99 (r/wallstreetbets, 2019)Idea Futures (aka prediction markets, information markets) by Robin Hanson (1996)Auctions: The Social Construction of Value  by Charles SmithSocial value of public information by Stephen Morris and Hyun Song Shin (American Economic Review, December 2002)Using prediction markets to estimate the reproducibility of scientific research by Anna Dreber, Thomas Pfeiffer, Johan Almenberg, Siri Isaksson, Brad Wilson, Yiling Chen, Brian Nosek, and Magnus Johannesson (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (November 2015)A solution to the single-question crowd wisdom problem by Dražen Prelec, Sebastian Seung, and John McCoy (Nature, January 2017)Targeting high ability entrepreneurs using community information: Mechanism design in the field by Reshmaan Hussam, Natalia Rigol, and Benjamin Roth (American Economic Review, March 2022)Information aggregation mechanisms: concept, design, and implementation for a sales forecasting problem by Charles Plott and Kay-Yut Chen, Hewlett Packard Laboratories (March 2002)If I had a million [on deciding to dump the CEO or not] by Robin Hanson (2008)Futarchy: Vote values, but bet beliefs by Robin Hanson (2013)From prediction markets to info finance by Vitalik Buterin (November 2024)Composability is innovation by Linda Xie (June 2021)Composability is to software as compounding interest is to finance by Chris Dixon (October 2021)resources & research on DAOs, a16z crypto Stay Updated: Let us know what you think: https://ratethispodcast.com/a16zFind a16z on Twitter: https://twitter.com/a16zFind a16z on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/a16zSubscribe on your favorite podcast app: https://a16z.simplecast.com/Follow our host: https://twitter.com/stephsmithioPlease note that the content here is for informational purposes only; should NOT be taken as legal, business, tax, or investment advice or be used to evaluate any investment or security; and is not directed at any investors or potential investors in any a16z fund. a16z and its affiliates may maintain investments in the companies discussed. Today's guest is a creative thinker with a unique understanding of the spaces she designs. Please welcome to the show, Vice President of Design at Aspen Hospitality Julie Frank. Julie joins Host Dan Ryan to share her journey from Architect to VP. Julie discusses her philosophy on hospitality, the importance of seizing opportunities, and how to blend spaces with the environments around them.Takeaways: Hospitality is any act that helps make people feel like a better version of their day to day selves. By taking their experiences and enhancing whatever they are seeking, you are delivering true hospitality. Attending industry events and building relationships is crucial once you're on the ownership side or involved with a brand or development. Having contacts you can rely on to address issues as they arise is paramount. It's important to respect the historical significance of spaces when incorporating modern brand experiences. By blending homage to the past with the unique elements of the modern brand, one can create a harmonious and impactful fusion. It's important to incorporate fun and creativity into design to engage people more effectively, rather than relying solely on teaching. In large-scale projects like museums, the visionary gestures often come from the top, with the rest focused on implementation. The best way to understand frustrations in any job is to experience them from all perspectives; embrace job changes to gain a broader understanding of professional dynamics and improve your ability to work harmoniously across different sectors. The ideal home-away-from-home experience is a relaxing and inviting space where one can feel at ease and explore the local area. To fully enjoy a property, guests should have both the comfort of well-designed rooms and relaxing communal spaces.Quote of the Show:“I wanted people to learn through spaces.” - Julie FrankLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/juliecfrank/c Website: https://aspenhospitality.co/ Shout Outs:2:45 - Rafael Viñoly2:47 - James Polshek2:54 - Rose Center for Earth and Space: https://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/permanent/rose-center 3:02 - Adam Tihany4:03 - Rockwell Group: https://www.rockwellgroup.com/ 4:04 - Avroko: https://www.avroko.com/ 4:49 - Shawn Sullivan: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shawn-sullivan-3a290546/overlay/about-this-profile/ 4:52 - Nobu: https://noburestaurants.com/ 5:54 - Starwood Hotels and Resorts8:57 - Le Meridian9:08 - W Hotels: https://w-hotels.marriott.com/ 9:41 - Brian Povinelli: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brian-povinelli-162b128/ 9:42 - George Fleck: https://www.linkedin.com/in/george-fleck-58967050/ 12:43 - Moshe Safdie22:30 - Robyn Kaminski: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robynkaminski/ 24:20 - Aliya Khan: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aliya-khan-8245461/ 25:50 - Sam Altman28:05 - Aspen Hospitality: https://aspenhospitality.co/ 33:25 - Thierry Despont44:42 - Mark Boekenheide: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-boekenheide-aia-20b6b1a/ 48:13 - Brad Wilson: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bgwilson/ 48:45 - Paul McElroy: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-mcelroy-3387954a/ Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPXApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1sAmazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

But this additional money is meant to keep up appearances until November at the expense of Americans who are forced to pay for it and Ukrainians who are forced to die for it." * Killing the Constitution - Andrew Napolitano. "The quintessential American right is the right to be left alone. Justice Louis Brandeis called it the most comprehensive of rights and the right most valued by civilized persons. It presumes that you can think as you wish and say what you think and read what you want and publish what you say, that you can exclude whomever you wish — including the government — from your property and from your thoughts; and that you can do all this without a government permission slip or fear of government reprisal. "This natural right is also protected in the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution, which requires a warrant issued by a judge based upon probable cause of crime before the government can invade your property or spy on you." * After Watergate, Congress passed FISA, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, "which established a secret court to do to Americans what the British had done to the colonists — issue broad general warrants, based on whatever the government wanted and not specifying the place to be searched or the person or thing to be seized. * Students Go After the Hypocrites - Eric Margolis. * What Started the War for Independence - Michael Boldin, TenthAmendmentCenter.com * "It bears repeating: The fighting at Lexington and Concord wasn't because the British army came to collect taxes. It was because of gun control."

Hosts: Leah Murray and Maura Carabello Playing the presidential ballot game One of our favorite things to talk about on KSL @ Night is the presidential election. Utah will be hosting a presidential debate next week, so Maura and Leah start off the show with a discussion on who’s running and, yes, there are some unfamiliar names on the ballot. What’s being done to address the gender pay gap in Utah? Utah has the second-largest gender pay gap in the nation, but figuring out what causes that pay gap is the way to address it. The deal is, when we control for occupation, experience, education, and other variables, then Utah’s pay gap goes to 97 cents on the dollar. Derek Miller, President and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber, joins Leah and Maura to discuss some solutions. Sen. Mike Lee interviews U.S. Senate candidates The Utah GOP is having its convention this month, which will include choosing who will be the party’s nominee for the U.S. Senate election happening in November. Ahead of that race, Sen. Mike Lee sat down with four of the candidates: Carolyn Phippen, Brad Wilson, Trent Staggs, and Jason Walton. Sen. Lee hasn’t endorsed any candidate and said he usually doesn’t, but maybe he will depending on how these conversations go… Indiana banned cell phones in their classrooms… Why didn’t Utah? Indiana passed a law that banned cell phones, tablets, laptops, and gaming devices in schools. Of course, this exempts educational purposes with a teacher’s permission, emergencies, etc. Why didn’t Utah follow Indiana on this? Aimee Winder Newton, Senior Advisor to Gov. Cox and Director of the Office of Families, joins the discussion. Lawmakers plan on expanding online privacy protections Yesterday, members of Congress released a proposal that would give consumers broad rights to control how tech companies like Google, Meta, and TikTok use their personal data. This has been a decades-long fight to adopt national online privacy protections. Maura and Leah discuss this sweeping proposal. What’s the one big thing we can do for our kids? Arthur Brooks recently wrote a piece for The Atlantic on the one big thing parents can do for their kids. In this piece, he brought up the concept of nature vs. nurture and research that shows that what parents do actually doesn’t have that much of an impact on kids. It’s mostly nature—not nurture—that predicts how a kid is going to do. Southwest Airlines adds on to the long list of airline woes Getting ready to fly this summer? Leah’s already booked flights to get to New York to visit family. What are the odds she can get there safely? Alex Stone, ABC News Correspondent in Los Angeles, joins Maura and Leah to explain what happened with a Southwest Airlines flight yesterday. The religious significance of the total solar eclipse Last week Leah got an email from Weber State University talking about how to treat people who had religious expectations during the eclipse. Kelsey Dallas, who covers religion, sports and the Supreme Court for the Deseret News, joins Leah and Maura to explain what the different faith communities are doing to celebrate or at least acknowledge the eclipse today.

In an interview with KUTV 2 News, Heidi Hatch, Brad Wilson, former Utah House Speaker, and current Republican U.S. Senate Candidate, spoke about the upcoming Utah Presidential Preference Poll/Caucus scheduled for Super Tuesday, Mar. 5.Wilson was not surprised by Mondays Supreme Court ruling that would keep former President Donald Trump on the ballot in all 50 states."I'm really glad they ruled the way we did. I expected they would rule the way they did," remarked Wilson. "Voters should be the ones to make this decision about who gets to be our next president, not activists in liberal states, not even activist judges in liberal states. And so, I think it's a good thing so that the American people get to make this decision."Wilson's remarks underscore a prevailing sentiment among many Utah Republicans, who have long advocated for preserving the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring that voters have the final say.The discussion comes on the eve of Super Tuesday and Utah's Presidential Preference Poll, where Utahns will have the opportunity to cast their votes and voice their preferences for the next President of the United States in neighborhood caucuses.Utah has 40 delegates at stake in the Presidential primary that will be divided amongst the candidates garnering votes Tuesday night.15 states and one US Territory will vote on Tuesday, Mar. 5 — doling out one third of the delegates needed to win.Registered Utah Republicans can get ready for caucus night by finding a location and registering.Utah Democrats should have received a ballot to vote and will also have an opportunity to caucus and pick delegates for state and county convention.Utah Election Information Highlights on important issues for Utah voters from Wilson's interview:RULING THAT PUTS TRUMP BACK ON THE BALLOT“I'm really glad they ruled the way we did. I expected they would rule the way they did. I mean, voters should be the ones to make this decision about who gets to be our next president, not activists in liberal states, not even activist judges in liberal states. And so, I think it's a good thing so that the American people get to make this decision.WILSON BACKING TRUMP FOR PRESIDENTI endorsed Donald Trump a few months ago. I that it was very clear that he was going to be the next nominee, and I believe he'll be the next president of the United States, and we need to unify the Republican party around him. And we're doing that right now. We've seen that happen over and over and over again and get the country back on track, uh, with his leadership. So, I'm excited. Um, Mm-Hmm. that, uh, we're heading that direction.WILL TRUMP DEBATE ON THE STAGE HERE IN UTAH?I hope that they choose to participate. I think it's good for the American people to hear, uh, both presidential nominees discuss the issues, learn from them what their opinions are, but, you know, and that's a long way off in politics and we'll see what, uh, what happens. But isn't it great that Utah Yeah. Has been chosen to be one of the hosts? And I, we did such a great job with the vice-presidential debate a few years ago that they wanted to bring it back here. It's just amazing.WHY SHOW UP TO CAUCUS?Well, it's a great opportunity and a great way to go out and meet your neighbors. Go out Mm-Hmm. into your precinct, and you just get in a room, and you, uh, will decide who you want to support for the president. You'll also decide who you want to send to be state delegates to the state convention and county delegates, to your county convention, and who's going to run the precinct for the next couple of years. And it's really the grassroots of politics in Utah. And it's, uh, served us really well for a long time. I think it's going to continue to serve us well in the future. So, I've been doing this for probably almost 40 years. Yeah. And it's a great experience if you go out and do it.BORDER CRISISWell, Congress has the ability, uh, to solve this issue if they want, but quite frankly, Joe Biden has the ability to close the border down right now. It's why you saw Border Patrol agents supporting Donald Trump, because they're so frustrated right now that the president who opened up the border when he became president, has done very little to try to close things down. The tools are there, there are resources there. The political will and the leadership are not there. People are frustrated. Now, Congress can do more, and I think they should do more. And I think you'll see them leaning into this issue, uh, in the near future. But we must secure our border. You know, Heidi, we know that the border crisis right now in America is costing every single taxpayer, uh, 1200, $1,300 a year by the time you look at the burden. This is placing on our criminal justice system, on our schools, on our healthcare system. The list goes on and on. Americans are frustrated, they're angry, they should be. And, and the, the fact of the matter is, Joe Biden is the one to blame right now for this issue. We need to get this solved.UKRAINE AND ISRAEL AID TIED TO BORDEROver the course of the next few months, you've got all these different issues both domestically and internationally that Congress is trying to wrestle to the ground. I believe we need to support our ally Israel, um, in defending themselves and dealing with Hamas that needs to be done in a surgical way. And, uh, we're going to continue to support them I'm sure, as a country with the aid that they need. We've supported Israel for years. Yeah. I mean, they've been a great ally. And without them in the Middle East, uh, we would see a lot of problems I think that, uh, we don't have right now. So, uh, I'm very supportive of what's happening there With Ukraine. Uh, people are frustrated. Uh, Americans are frustrated. There's been a hundred plus billion dollars of, of American taxpayer dollars sent there.ECONOMY AND INFLATIONUtah families do feel like they've been pushed to the brink. Mm-Hmm. And, and you said the word economy, but I'll just kind of maybe peel the layer back one additional level, which is what they really feel right now is this incredible inflation. Mm-Hmm. that's hurt them. And we know in the last three years since Biden became president, the average Utah family has seen their cost-of-living increase by about $8,000 a year, Heidi. And that is real money. Everything is costing Utah so much more money, whether it's cars or housing or fuel or food. Yeah. Uh, food right now is costing as much for a Utah family as a percentage of their household budget as it did when I was in high school. I mean, that's how much Utah families are spending on food. They are frustrated, but it's inflation that they're frustrated with.HOW TO FIX INFLATION?The reason we have all this inflation is because the White House and Congress has spent so much money, and we don't have fiscal discipline in Washington, DC and you ask about the solution. Mm-Hmm., the solution is for Congress to start spending less. And in fact, spending what they generate, they're going to spend almost $2 trillion more this year back in Washington than they're generating. In what world does that make sense? That we can spend that much more money than we're generating in Washington DC and then the American people, American families are the ones that are paying the price for it. There needs to be some fiscal discipline in Washington. And here's what's great about what's happening right now in Utah. We know how to do that as Speaker of the house. Not only did I balance our budget, but I balanced our budget and cut taxes three different times for the biggest tax cuts in the history of Utah. Now, that's the kind of leadership we need in Washington is how do you balance a budget? How do you actually cut taxes? And by the way, that doesn't create the kind of inflation, uh, that you're seeing in, in Washington.SPENDING OVERRUNS COME FROM BOTH DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS- HOW WILL YOU MAKE A DENT IN THE MASSIVE DEBT?Well, it shouldn't be about campaign promises. Uh, this should be about what's right for the American people. Uh, this should be about what's right in terms of spending and controlling spending. And you've got to change the system in Washington. We've got to either pass a balance budget amendment, or we've got to do something legislatively that says Congress can't spend more money, uh, than they're taking it. And we need some people back there that have actually done the work, that have balanced budgets at a state level and have cut taxes at the same time. Utah's very unique in the sense that we have done that, but until you change the system, the only way you're going to change the system is change the people we send back there, you're going to continue to have this problem. And this is the number one issue I hear from Utahans, whether I'm up in Tremont or I'm down in St. George and everywhere in between, they want Congress to finally get their act together and start spending less money.HOME BUYINGAt the end of the day, it's supply and demand, but the other thing that's changed so dramatically for people is just what a house payment costs them. Yeah. And that's a function of inflation and interest rates. And that's a function of all the spending in Washington. Until we get spending under control in Washington, you're likely to see interest rates stay high, and you're likely to see housing be unaffordable for Utah families. And, and I do worry about the next generation. I mean, like you Heidi, I have kids that are launching in the world, and they are looking at their future, and they want to know that someday they'll be able to live the American dream of owning their own home. And we want to help them as parents, but we need leaders, uh, back in Washington, uh, and here in the state that are going to lean into this issue. You have seen a lot more done at a state level. Uh, we have done more here to help Utah families, uh, get into their first home than Washington's ever, ever thought of. Uh, all Washington's made the problem worse. Utah leaders have tried to make the problem easier to solve.WHAT SETS HIM APART?We need more people in Washington DC that have been in the trenches at a state level solving problems and have seen, uh, from a front row seat the problems in dysfunction that's created in Washington. And that's what's really unique about my candidacy. I mean, I'm the only person, uh, that is running in this race that has a record of the biggest tax cuts in the history of the state. Uh, I'm the only person running in this race that has helped initiate suits against the federal government because of all the problems that they have caused, whether it's on energy policy or public lands or other issues. And having someone that's actually lived the problems that the federal government's created, go back to Washington and prevent problems from happening and fix the problems that are already there is a unique opportunity for Utahans. And that's part of the reason I'm running.CROWDED RACEGovernor Cox is supporting my candidacy. And so, no one has the grassroots support that we have, and no one also has the support of elected officials, including sixty plus mayors from across the state and some of our biggest cities. And here is why. All these people, Heidi are wanting me to get elected to the US Senate. They know I am going to fight for Utah. They know I have got the experience to do this, and they know what this country needs. What Utah needs is to have someone that has actually done the work before.Utah U.S. Senate Candidates:John Curtis, RepublicanBrad Reed Wilson, RepublicanTrent Staggs, RepublicanBrent Orrin Hatch, RepublicanCarolyn Phippen, RepublicanClark S. Sign of the Horse Brewery Season 3 Episode 16 Bret and Dave had the pleasure to host Brad Wilson and Matt Moore, two of the co-owners, from Sign of the Horse Brewery in Hanover, PA and Red Lion, Pa. We get to find out why they started a brewery and how the name came about. It seems as though there was a tavern in the 1700's in Hanover that was called Sign of the Horse. Even Thomas Jefferson visited to have a pint. They have actually three locations, their first on York Street, a traditional beirhaus on the square in Hanover and their newest location in Red Lion, PA. It is a very interesting story that you need to see for yourself. from Brad's corporate background to Matt's homebrewing days, they have created a must visit place and grab a pint or two for yourself. They brought along a Pale Ale, IPA and a Marzen for us to try. We can't wait to visit them and try some more and we recommend you do the same! Join us as we take you on our beer sampling through the local beers and let's all Be Bonded by Beer! Have a suggestion on a beer or brewery we need to highlight? Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to a special edition of our podcast, where we delve into the life, family, career, and vision of a distinguished individual with a deep commitment to Utah values. Today, we bring you the story of a Utah native, a conservative leader, and a passionate advocate for the principles that define the "Utah Way."   Our guest today is Brad Wilson, a true Utahn, born and raised in Kaysville. Graduating from Weber State, where he met our other guest today – his wife of nearly 30 years, Jeni Wilson. With a background that resonates with the values we hold dear, Brad Wilson emerged from a family of ten children, working hard from a young age as a grocery bagger and stocking shelves at local stores.   Following college, he ventured into finance, taking the risk of starting and growing a home building business. Through ups and downs, he created jobs, supported families, and built the communities we call home – before accepting the call to public service.   For the past 14 years, Brad has been a vocal advocate for Utah values as the Representative for District 15 – eventually becoming Speaker of the House. Fighting for smaller government, lower taxes, and the enforcement of law and order.   Brad isn't just a passive observer of the political landscape but an active participant who never backs down from responsibility when the world around him needs someone who will rise to the occasion. Not happy with the direction that Washington DC is taking us, he seeks a seat in the US Senate, fueled by a desire to protect the values he holds dear.   As Speaker of the Utah House, our guest boasts a record on taxes that sets him apart. Cutting income tax rates and doubling the dependent exemption for new parents, he has played a pivotal role in shaping Utah's economic policies, having cut taxes by over a billion dollars during his tenure.   This seasoned leader's influence extends beyond legislative chambers. He has been actively involved in committees and boards, shaping policies that impact Utah's working families. Beyond his political roles, Brad maintains a deep connection to Utah, understanding the intricacies of its communities and the "Utah Way" that resonates with its residents.   His journey is not just about the past; it's also a roadmap to the future. As he embarks on a campaign for the US Senate, our guest envisions a movement—a movement to change the kind of representation Utah has in the Senate, and change the direction of the country in the process. Brad Wilson has made significant contributions to our life here in Kaysville and is running for Senate to ensure a better future for all Utah residents.   In this episode, we'll delve deeper into the specific policies, challenges, and triumphs that define Brad Wilson's journey and learn a little bit more about his family life and what that means to him.'
