Souls Dead, Eyes Dilated: Darren Aaronofsky's Requiem for a Dream On this week's episode Mr. Chavez & I sit down for a re-watch of Darren Aaronofsky's second feature, Requiem for a Dream, based on the 1978 novel by Hubert Selby Jr. Aaronofsky's adaptation is a tragic and often times painful viewing of heroin addiction and the victims (Jared Leto, Marlon Wayans, and Jennifer Connelly) it leaves in its wake. Aaronofsky and Selby contrast heroin addiction with the more "acceptable" and less recognized addiction of prescription diet pills embodied in the struggles of Ellen Burstyn's Sara Goldfarb character as she struggles to lose weight and slowly slips into madness. With brutal and traumatizing imagery, Aaronofsky's film is a chilling look into the world of addiction. This week Mr. Chavez & I are thrilled to discuss this difficult, painful, and enlightening film. Take a listen and let us know what you think. On today's show, guitarist and songwriter Lorne Behrman explains how he weathered through the pandemic in New York City, has a conversation about marriage and fatherhood, and talks about sobriety, A.I. & Chat GPT, his new album and more. Lorne also performs a couple of songs: BARBARA and YOU DON'T KNOW ME LIKE THAT. GUEST OVERVIEW: Lorne Behrman is a Punk rock n' roll guitarist and singer-songwriter songwriter who has previously played in The Dimestore Haloes, L.E.S. Stitches, The Dead Tricks, and The Sweet Things. Lorne's most recent album - his second as a solo artist - BLUE LOVE (Spaghetty Town Records) is an 11-song collection featuring "a series of New York City vignettes haunted by shadows but guided by light." The stories on BLUE LOVE are literate and lacerating, recalling the street poetics of Lou Reed, Jim Carroll, Jesse Malin, Patti Smith, Hubert Selby Jr., and Tom Waits. The songs feature stark and fluid guitar playing in the spirit of Television, The Stooges' James Williamson, Johnny Thunders, and Robert Quine with Lou Reed. Previously, Lorne issued a critically-acclaimed EP and debut album that have garnered accolades and features in Classic Rock Magazine, Vive Le Rock Magazine, Metronome, Glide Magazine, New Noise, Goldmine, and taste-making punk mag Razorcake. Lorne has played shows with Richard Lloyd (Television), Jeremy & the Harlequins, Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group), Jonny Polonsky, Adam Masterson, Lulu Lewis, and Diane Gentile, among many others. https://www.lornebehrmanmusic.com/

We had the pleasure of interviewing ERRA over Zoom video! Prolific metalcore progressives ERRA have dropped the deluxe version of their latest album S/T, viia UNFD. The expanded edition of S/T is beefed up with seven additional tracks, including a feature from Spiritbox's Courtney LaPlante, along with three covers. The material on the deluxe has been praised by Loudwire, Rock Sound, Knotfest, Riff, and more. With touring off the table for most of 2021, the band found other means of creative outlet, and opted to re-enter the studio with producers Carson and Grant around the time of the release of what would go on to become their career-defining self titled album. On that album, the band confronted depression, anxiety, and desperation throughout. They took listeners on a near-out-of-body journey to Aokigahara, the infamous Suicide Forest of Japan; into episodic storytelling that would make Black Mirror writers proud; and into the literary works of Cormac McCarthy and Hubert Selby Jr. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland, it served as a definitive mission statement for the band, the members of which are already well-respected players revered for their inspiring technicality and raw, natural talent. The deluxe edition builds upon that foundation. ERRA have also released a new mini-documentary. The footage was filmed in January 2021 when the band was recording the new songs and offers a deeper insight into their process and the artistic choices they made regarding the additional material and cover songs on the deluxe edition. A NOTE ON THE EPISODE: While discussing themes in Hubert Selby Jr.'s novel “Last Exit to Brooklyn” we are not aiming to group transgender people together with some other negative themes from the novel in a negative way. The context is describing similar themes found in the novel and on the album.
BE EXCITED! BE-BE EXCITED! William (Bill) S. Burroughs and Hubert Selby Jr. (A.K.A Cubby) lived improbably long lives, considering the damage they inflicted on their bodies via heroin addiction. As the rest of America gloried in the post-WW2 period of prosperity, comfort and conformity, Bill and Cubby explored the ghettos, underpasses and fringes of society, looking for the forgotten people—those cast off and dismissed as unworthy of the so-called American Dream. They were interested in the stories of the homosexuals, drag queens, sex workers, junkies, drunks and hustlers. Unlike the unlucky rest of us, Bill and Cubby became more relevant and cooler as they got older. Their radical subject matter and writing styles drew in new generations of fans and attracted notable figures from other creative fields; Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain idolised Bill, while Cubby counted among his fans punk personality Henry Rollins and Red Hot Chilli Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis. Please visit our website, hollywordpodcast.com to find show notes, including a list of sources used, and more information.
In today’s episode we are finishing our Hubert Selby Jr. double feature by having a look at Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream (2000). The movie is again set mostly in Brooklyn and while also exploring themes similar to those of Last Exit to Brooklyn, Requiem’s arguably even bleaker tone and story, as well as its novel and in part experimental approach to filmmaking at the time of release, manage to make it a very distinct viewing experience. We’ll be discussing editing choices, overall themes and the movie’s main characters: the widowed Sara and a trio of junkies consisting of her son Harry, his girlfriend Marion and his best friend Tyrone.
In this episode of the Books of Some Substance podcast, Nick chats with Michael Berdan from the New York City noise-rock-slash-industrial-metal band Uniform about Hubert Selby Jr.’s The Room. We talk about the importance of tone and aesthetic in both vocal delivery and fiction’s prose, about Berdan’s deeply personal connection to Selby Jr.’s writing, and, perhaps most importantly, about how art can be coarse while still delivering a message of hope and compassion. Uniform’s latest full-length, Shame, is available now through Sacred Bones Records and is, truthfully, the absolute perfect musical accompaniment to Hubert Selby Jr.’s writings. Grating, boundary-pushing perspectives of humanity abound. We might all be isolated, but we're not all alone.
In this episode we’re having a look at Uli Edel’s 1989 slice-of-life drama Last Exit to Brooklyn. The film is based on Hubert Selby Jr.’s novel of the same name, which was hotly debated in some countries when it originally came out in 1964. Naturally, the novel’s at the time controversial themes and depictions of characters also carried over into the movie adaptation. We’ll be discussing the film’s portrayal of strike action involving the unionized workers of a local factory, a married man and father discovering his homosexuality, as well as the struggles of a young woman working as a street prostitute and other “rejects” that fell through the cracks of society.

Guest host Jane Kaczmarek presents three stories with surprising twists and turns, a reminder that surprises can still be entertaining, even though the world has changed in unpredictable ways. A wife finds something unexpected in her local thrift shop in “Second Hand,” by Andres Neuman. The story is performed by Kaczmarek. Dawn Powell’s “Dinner on the Rocks” is an elegant comedy of bad manners, performed by Christina Pickles. And the salesman in Hubert Selby Jr.’s “Fortune Cookie” thinks he’s found a formula for success. Michael Imperioli is the reader.

A group of prostitutes, union workers, and drag queens all lead difficult lives within an existence of drugs, crime and violence in a working-class Brooklyn neighbourhood. Based on the 1964 novel by American author Hubert Selby Jr. The novel has become a cult classic because of its harsh, uncompromising look at lower class Brooklyn in the 1950s and for its brusque, everyman style of prose. Although critics and fellow writers praised the book on its release, Last Exit to Brooklyn caused much controversy because of its frank portrayals of taboo subjects, such as drug use, street violence, gang rape, homosexuality, transvestism and domestic violence. It was the subject of an important obscenity trial in the United Kingdom and was banned in Italy.
