Not exactly a “horror movie” but 1989's Last Exit to Brookyn is a study of horrible people doing horrible things.  Based loosely on Huber Selby Jr.'s 1964 novel, this bleak study in brutality tells a story of Brooklyn's savage underbelly. Directly by Uli Edel, it features some familiar faces including Jennifer Jason Leigh, Stephen Lang, Burt Young and Jerry Orbach among others. On film and left-wing terrorism.   [Patreon Exclusive]   We talk about Uli Edel's 2008 film The Baader Meinhof Complex, which tells the story of the Red Army Faction in 1960s and 70s Germany. What sorts of myths do films create? Is the attempt to break down myths in fact a way of re-making those myths? Is a Red Army Faction response possible today - and what does terrorism at the End of the End of History look like?   We also discuss the image-sausage-grinder theory of film and reflect on six years of podcast urban guerilla activity. As noted previously, this half of the episode focuses on 2008's The Baader-Meinhof Complex, directed by Uli Edel. It's a true-story thriller that depicts the activities of a terrorist group in West Germany over a ten-year period beginning in the late 1960s. There are times when you're drawn into the story enough that you find yourself leaning toward rooting for the bad guys, but ultimately you'll come to your senses and see that there's no other way this story could end. COMING ATTRACTIONS: As Sean notes, for the next few episodes the films will be from different nations. The theme of next week's episode is "Only Connect" and once you see these films you'll realize why. We'll begin with Exotica, from 1994, written and directed by Atom Egoyan. It's a Canadian film but it could take place anywhere in North America. And from there we go to 1997's The Edge of Heaven, a Turkish-German drama written and directed by Fatih Akın. It's a film whose near-misses you may find frustrating, but again there's no other way for this story to go. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support

I początku lat 70. w RFN. - Rozgrzewka:)) - Nowinki / starowinki - 20:13 - Lektury - 37:37 - Temat przewodni - 1:02 Pełny tekst opisu zamieściliśmy na stronie internetowej naszego projektu: https://bit.ly/3YKeSnq Wymienione w czasie audycji publikacje i materiały: - Podcast: History of the Germans. An allen deutschen Schulen? Skoro rozmowa o Berlinie, to zagramy Dawida Bowiego i Iggy Popa. Porozmawiamy też o Złotych Globach i kilku innych kwestiach z pogranicza kultury, popkultury i polityki.

In this episode we’re having a look at Uli Edel’s 1989 slice-of-life drama Last Exit to Brooklyn. The film is based on Hubert Selby Jr.’s novel of the same name, which was hotly debated in some countries when it originally came out in 1964. Naturally, the novel’s at the time controversial themes and depictions of characters also carried over into the movie adaptation. We’ll be discussing the film’s portrayal of strike action involving the unionized workers of a local factory, a married man and father discovering his homosexuality, as well as the struggles of a young woman working as a street prostitute and other “rejects” that fell through the cracks of society.

The Who Killed Laura Podcast Ep 21 - Asian Man Killed!! Greeting fellow Peakers! Thanks for joining Scott and Chris on another discussion of Twin Peaks. This episode, Double Play, aired on 02/02/1991 to 8.7 million viewers (sliding over a million from the previous episode). This episode was written by Scott Frost, brother of co-creator Mark and directed by Body of Evidence director, Uli Edel.   As the past catches up to suspended Special Agent Dale Cooper, Ben Horne struggles with his sanity (as does Nadine Hurley). In fact, the most important revelation of this episode of The Who Killed Laura Podcast the startling number of mentally ill residents of the small town of Twin Peaks. Is the White Lodge actually an insane asylum?  Is Dr. Jacoby the only one mental health care provider? If so, it is our opinion that he is the true villain of the series as well as the world's worst psychiatrist.   We hope this episode helps you stay sane.

A group of prostitutes, union workers, and drag queens all lead difficult lives within an existence of drugs, crime and violence in a working-class Brooklyn neighbourhood. Based on the 1964 novel by American author Hubert Selby Jr. The novel has become a cult classic because of its harsh, uncompromising look at lower class Brooklyn in the 1950s and for its brusque, everyman style of prose. Although critics and fellow writers praised the book on its release, Last Exit to Brooklyn caused much controversy because of its frank portrayals of taboo subjects, such as drug use, street violence, gang rape, homosexuality, transvestism and domestic violence. It was the subject of an important obscenity trial in the United Kingdom and was banned in Italy.
