Tread Perilously celebrates its 500th podcast by going back to the beginning -- the first ever Doctor Who story: "An Unearthly Child." When Shoreditch area schoolteachers Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton have a conversation about an unusual student, Susan Foreman, their questions lead them to a junkyard at the end of Totter's Lane. Inside, they find no trace of Susan, but instead discover an out-of-place police box. Soon, they encounter a difficult old man who not only turns out to be Susan's grandfather, but an alien known only as The Doctor. And when he sets his time machine to 100,000 B.C., it begins a huge adventure for the foursome. Justin reacts to just how different The Doctor is in his first appearance. Erik recalls some previous episodes of the podcast. Susan finally gets a discussion all her own. Barbara and Ian also take focus, forcing Justin to reconsider one of his previously established archetypes. Erik tries to give producer Verity Lambert some of her due. The issues with episodes 2-4 are explored. The initial William Hartnell depiction of The Doctor leads to some myth-making about the show. Justin has a hard time holding onto Jacqueline Hill's name and the pair imagine other Doctor/companion teams dealing with the cavemen and their quest for fire.
Christmas is a time for family, they say – which is why the Doctor has invited his granddaughter Susan, and great grandson Alex for Christmas dinner in his time and space machine. But who, or what, is the spectre at their yuletide feast? Venturing deep into the dark heart of the TARDIS, Susan uncovers her past, Alex is told his future – and the Doctor finds himself caught in a deadly, dangerous present! Writer: Marc Platt Director: Barnaby Edwards Paul McGann (The Doctor) Sheridan Smith (Lucie Miller) Carole Ann Ford (Susan Campbell) Jake McGann (Alex Campbell)

Straight Outta Gallifrey revisits Susan Foreman... I mean Susan Campbell 30 years after the Dalek Invasion of Earth. Susan is not passive at all in this post alien invasion/present xenophobic paranoia. She is doing what she can to unite the earth in the fight for peace and progression whereas her son Alex, is setting his political sights in a different direction. Will Alex end up learning the truth about his heritage, even though has sought so hard to strike down that very thing that might be what he actually is? Sorry, that previous sentence got away from me. Oh, and did we mention Paul McGann's doctor is in this one? Yeah! This week, Dougray Scott, Jessica Raine and two scary skeleton creatures are all so unspeakably horny that all Nathan, Corey, Si and Pete can do is Hide. Notes and links Jessica Raine, who plays Emma in Hide will go on to play Doctor Who's first producer Verity Lambert in An Adventure in Space and Time, a drama about the origins of Doctor Who which is released a few months after this episode. But more about that later, perhaps. (Spoilers!) Sound Effects No. 13: Death & Horror was an album produced by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in 1977 and used continuously in TV and stage productions ever since. Mary Whitehouse complained vociferously about its release, because of course she did. Christopher Nolan's Interstellar (2014) also features time-travelling astronauts with a ghostly influence on the past. It's hard to imagine that it makes that much more sense than Hide though, isn't it? I considered writing about the racist lyrics of Cole Porter's Let's Do It, but after a second's reflection, I've decided to just let you Google them for yourself. But really, don't. The Stone Tape (1972) was a made-for-TV movie written by Quatermass's Nigel Kneale and featuring Jane Asher and Doctor Who's very own Ian Cuthbertson. Like Hide, it features researchers spending the night in a house haunted by a spectral woman, but Neil Cross would like to make it very clear that for copyright purposes, it is in every way a legally distinct entity from Hide. El Sandifer is particularly scathing in her assessment of Nigel Kneale in her essay on (among other things) ITV's 1978 TV movie version of Quatermass. And finally, Whatever Happened to Susan Foreman? was an episode of a comedy radio programme called Whatever Happened To…?, first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 1994 — featuring Jane Asher (again) as Susan Foreman. It was released as a special feature on the DVD of The Dalek Invasion of Earth. Actually, there is one more thing. The story from The Sarah Jane Adventures that we talk about in the tag is called Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?. It's amazing. Go and watch it immediately. Let's Celebrate the complicated legacy of Susan Foreman, the Doctor's Granddaughter and First Companion!I'll discuss Susan's (perhaps unfair) reputation as "The Screamer," what makes Susan special as a companion, her unique relationship to the Doctor, Mentor/Mentee relationships generally between the Doctor and Companion, the problematic aspects of Susan's development and departure, the deliberate parallels between her departure and Rose Tyler's, and her overall legacy within the history of the show. One day, she shall come back. Yes, she shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties."Look, if they don't understand, they can't, they can't hurt us at all. I understand these people better than you. Their minds reject things they don't understand." (to the Doctor)"I love your school. I loved England in the twentieth century. The last five months have been the happiest of my life." (to Ian and Barbara)-An Unearthly Child "Oh, look, Grandfather. I understand the Sensorites. They're timid little people. Because their minds and mine can communicate sometimes, they trust me." "Grandfather and I don't come from Earth. It's been ages since we've seen our planet. It's quite like Earth. But at night, the sky is a burnt orange, and leaves on the trees are bright silver."The Sensorites"I never felt there was any time or place that I belonged to. I've never had any real identity.""One day you will. There will come a time when you're forced to stop travelling, and you'll arrive somewhere."-The Dalek Invasion of EarthNEXT TIME: Serial #11 The Rescue (Episodes: "The Powerful Enemy" & "Desperate Measures")Special thanks to Cathlyn "Happigal" Driscoll for providing the beautiful artwork for this podcast. Today, we look at The Aztecs, a famous serial and Josh's favorite of the Hartnell era. Tread Perilously closes out Doctor Who month with the earliest story they've watched yet -- "The Edge of Destruction" aka "Inside the Spaceship." When The Doctor's attempt to steer "the ship" back to 20th Century Earth, they end up at the beginning of the universe -- or the Solar System if The Doctor is to be believed. The TARDIS knows it's in trouble, but it has a hard time conveying this message to its passengers. Meanwhile, Susan decides she needs to stab people with a dangerous pair of scissors, The Doctor becomes quite suspicious of his human captives, and Ian is reduced to a child-like state. Can Barbara interpret the TARDIS's message and save the day? Justin experiences what he calls "mezozoic" Doctor Who. He also finally meets Susan Foreman, The Doctor's granddaughter, and, of course, compares her to Zoe. They also discuss the new previous Doctor played by Jo Martin. It leads to a discussion of "The Other," and parts of the Cartmel Masterplan. Erik reveals his dislike of the genetic looms. Justin learns to dislike The Doctor's original mission statement. John Nathan-Turner comes up again and it turns out a young William Hartnell looked like Tom Hiddleston. The color-coded bandage becomes a favorite part of TARDIS tech and Hartnell's tendency to flub becomes an infectious spirit.
Here we are again the latest episode from the triplets of Nerdity, that’s right folks those wacky goofballs have done it again. First up we have Buck bringing us news about new robots using the art of Kirigami. The art of cutting paper, in this case it is cutting and folding paper. This method has been applied to robotics with some awesome results. Now while it is only early days, we ask you to remember the Origami claw we featured a while back. With this in mind you will understand why Buck is excited, and Professor joins in with the excitement. This is just the start of the show and it is already looking fantastic.Next we look at the dismal lack of taste exhibited by the foolish bunch of weirdos in Hollywood behind the Golden Globes. That’s right we said it, actually Buck did if any snipers are being sent for reprisals. But seriously, just get those idiots to go look at some of the amazing work in animation out there. It doesn’t have to be all CGI, honestly Hollywood was built on proper special effects. These days they struggle to do anything outside a computer lab. While we are not meaning to insult CGI and the wonders it can produce, why can’t we have some proper animation and anime getting awards. When can we see some real special effects like we used to get back in the day. Not meaning to sound as grumpy as Buck or as old as a Boomer but seriously the talent involved in special effects was astounding.Last we look at a remake of Sonic 06 that is actually looking good. That is until corporate lawyers realised they could make money by getting it shut down. Take a moment and open the link, doesn’t that look so much better then what was dumped on the market like so much garbage? The amount of work involved must be mind-blowing, but there may be hope for the future. Want to know what that might be, well you will need to listen in to find out. You thought I was slipping and going to tell you everything, but believe me, there is so much more for you.We finish with the regular shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and special events. As always we hope you take care of yourselves, look out for each other and stay hydrated.Self-folding robots using kirigami- https://techxplore.com/news/2019-12-robots-self-folding-kirigami-materials.html- https://www.pnas.org/content/early/2019/12/11/1906435116/tab-figures-dataAnime Movies snubbed from Golden Globes - https://www.cbr.com/golden-globes-shuts-out-anime-films-promare-weathering-with-you-i-lost-my-body/Sonic 06 Remade by a Fan - https://www.engadget.com/2019/12/11/sonic-p-06-unity-pc-fan-remake/Games currently playingBuck– Pirates Slay - https://www.crazygames.com/game/pirates-slayRating: 4.5/5DJ– Frenzy Retribution - https://store.steampowered.com/app/1108560/FrenzyRetribution/Rating: 4/5Professor- Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition - https://store.steampowered.com/app/813780/Age_of_Empires_II_Definitive_Edition/Rating: 4.733/5Other topics discussedKirigami Definiton (variation of origami that includes cutting of the paper, rather than solely folding the paper as is the case with origami, but typically does not use glue.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirigami- https://www.origami-resource-center.com/kirigami-for-kids.htmlT-1000 (A fictional character in the Terminator franchise. River Song has many ways to amuse herself away from her husband. Meanwhile, teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright have concerns over the behaviour of one of their pupils. Susan Foreman is intrigued by Dr Song, but something else is stalking her in the darkness and fog of London, 1963… 6.2 The Web of Time by John Dorney The capital has been evacuated. Monsters stalk the Underground. For River, it’s the perfect opportunity to steal a priceless artwork, so long as she can avoid looters, soldiers and an alien invasion. With the gallant Captain Knight at her side, River faces the Great Intelligence and its Yeti army. But her biggest challenge may be keeping time itself on track… 6.3 Peepshow by Guy Adams Miniscope parts fetch quite a price on the open market – luckily, River knows where she can find one that’s about to be decommissioned. Unfortunately, this particular miniscope is chock-full of aliens, as well as unsuspecting Earthlings. River must face a carnival of monsters before she can claim her prize – across miniature habitats, Ogrons, Sontarans and Drashigs await! 6.4 The Talents of Greel by Paul Morris River visits Victorian London on the trail of anachronistic technology. But when young women are stolen from the streets, she takes a stand. River’s investigation leads to theatre impresario Henry Gordon Jago, and his latest star act: Li H’Sen Chang and the unnerving Mr Sin. But if River’s going undercover at the Palace Theatre, she needs to have a song…

Straight Outta Gallifrey made sure to go back, or forward, or sideways...I lose track sometimes, to revisit the Susan Foreman stories. Is she a Time Lady? Ashford is unsure. Siskoid is convinced that she is. No matter. Covering these stories featuring the lovely Carole Ann Ford has been such a delight. Listen as Ashford, Siskoid, and Joe Dredd discuss the Dalek Invasion of Earth!
Joe Dredd, Siskoid, and Ashford discuss the Sensorites, featuring Susan Foreman, the Doctor's granddaughter. In this particular story, a description of Gallifrey is given by Susan as well as this character displaying telepathy. Susan really stands up for herself in this one, indicating to the Doctor that she is growing up and has the right to seek and possess her own agency.
Time LadiesThe women of Gallifrey, no matter what regeneration, are as formidable as male Gallifreyans. With the 13th Doctor's first series on the horizon, Jessica and Phillip look back at other Time Ladies and what their legacy is for Jodi Whittaker. They discus Missy, Jenny ("The Doctor's Daughter"), Susan Foreman, and others. In their look into the TARDIS library, they revisit the introduction of Time Lady Romana (Mary Tamm) in the 4th Doctor serial "The Ribos Operation."Who is your favorite Time Lady?
Charles Skaggs & Jesse Jackson discuss "The Five Doctors", the Doctor Who 20th Anniversary Special from 1983, featuring Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor, Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor, Richard Hurndall as the First Doctor, Janet Fielding as Tegan Jovanka, Mark Strickson as Vislor Turlough, Nicholas Courtney as The Brigadier, Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, and Carole Ann Ford as Susan Foreman! Straight Outta Gallifrey is back! Warriors' Gate is the topic of episode 44. Unfortunately, this is good bye to Romana, as far as on screen appearances are concerned. The adventures of Romana will continue to be a topic of discussion with the Big Finish audio plays and beyond. Lalla Ward and Mary Tamm both deserve praise for breaking such new ground with playing the first returning, mainstay Time Lady. See Straight Outta Gallifrey's review of The Invasion of Time, where we discuss the first every on screen Time Lady. Now if evidence is ever revealed that Susan Foreman is more than just a Gallifreyan, but a Time Lord as well, we will go back and discuss the Susan stories. Contact us on www.wrightonnetwork.com

In this episode, Daniel and Shana are highly amused (and at least somewhat impressed by) the second two-part story of Series 9, "Under the Lake/Before the Flood." A base-under-siege with a nifty Golden Age SF time travel twist, this story inspires discussion of subjugated peoples controlled by mental conditioning, the way that that metaphor might reflect modern-day patriarchal structures, and the use of time travel paradoxes in Moffat Who. Also: email about military adventurism in the Western world, discussion of the space opera elements of Blake's 7, and a rough definition of the word miniarchist. All that and a rubber monster, too. Main Topic: Under the Lake/Before the Flood. Shana's Intro. Daniel didn't hate this. Where have these characters been? Semaphore. Sophie Stone. New producer. Our deaf listeners? An email from Henry, our miniarchist friend. Quote, unquote. Literally. "Don't ding a poet!" Blake's 7. The Underwater Menace DVD and the possibility of streaming. A letter from Tom and military metaphor. "Lean back and think of England." Toby Whithouse. Shana does her Susan Foreman impersonation for Jack Graham. Petroleum. I'm from UNIT. Pacing. O'Donnel versus Osgood. The Cold War. Prentiss and BDSM. The Tivolians and the Ood. Not Robin Williams. Daniel is an idiot. The love stories. Feels like a Classic Who four-parter. Still not a bossy control freak. Dynamic female characters. The bootstrap paradox. Breaking the fourth wall. Rock star anarchist Rod Serling. Our blind listeners. Doctor Who as a time travel story. Robert Osborne. Structure. Fixed points and Time Lords. Flood myths. Bigger pictures. "Can we call him Aladdin?" Consistent universes. Alien races in Classic Who. Trek vs. Who. "They can't say the Doctor's been racist for 2000 years." Future history. Creature design. The Fisher King versus the Graf Vynda-K. Screwdriver vs. Sunglasses. Next week: State of Decay. Full Battle Rattle, a documentary mentioned in the show. Shana and Daniel discuss The Mind Robber and the God Complex. Find Our Stuff! Find us on iTunes! Or Facebook! In this episode (recorded on the day of the 51st anniversary) Daniel and Shana discuss the very first episode of Doctor Who: An Unearthly Child. Are the caveman sequences worth it? Is Barbara really as awesome as fandom thinks? (Yes.) Should the Doctor always be a hero? All this and much more. Main Topic: An Unearthly Child. Meeting three new companions. The Susan Scream. Parks and Recreation reference. Explaining "received fan wisdom." Going to Chicago TARDIS. Talkin' about Susan Foreman. Doctor Who Hair Trivia. "I Don't Like This Century." Shana Impersonates Susan. Doing Barbara. Coal Hill Schoolteachers in Season One and Series Eight. Eyefuckery. The first episode of An Unearthly Child as the beginning of a horror movie. Practical Barbara. Empathy. Blockhead Ian. "Courtney Trouble." The First Doctor is an officious prick. Moral ambiguity. Shana gives her quote. Skeptical Ian. Never show this to an anthropologist. Expectations of the BBC. Production values. Lots of Man-Thigh. Hur's agency. "Savages." Kyriarchy. Class structure. Doctor Who as Degrassi. The M-word. Worldbuilding. Shipping Ian and Barbara. Homoerotic fight sequences. Verity Lambert: one of the coolest women in history. Love for "An Adventure in Space and Time." A long aside about the Beatles. Would you recommend An Unearthly Child to a new fan? Leaving Barbara to die. Fear Makes Companions of All of Us. Bashing a caveman with a rock. An unheroic Doctor. Next Week: The Romans. Find us on iTunes! Or Facebook! No movies this week as Keith and Rachel talk about The Day of the Doctor and all things Doctor Who related. Keith tries to fill Rachel in on some things she might have missed. He also obsesses about Susan.
Dangerously under-caffeinated, John and Lawrence talk through the second episode of Doctor Who series 7. Among the things they get wrong are the name of the director (it's Saul Metzstein), the name of the actress playing Nefertiti (it's Riann Steele) and the name of Susan Foreman's beau (which is David Campbell, not David Cameron like John thought). Facts, eh?
"Susan Foreman is a mystery to teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, seemingly knowing more than she should about the past... and the future. Their curiosity leads them to follow her home one night, only to find that her she appears to live in a deserted junkyard. There they discover a police telephone box and an old man, who claims to be Susan’s grandfather, and calls himself the Doctor. The journey of a lifetime is about to begin..." In this first episode, English Gav becomes way too obsessed with Ian.
