For episode 69, we finish up the last installment of the "Mommas in Music" series, which also happens to be our final episode of 2022. For this show, Shannon talks to two mommas in different parts of the world about their experiences with motherhood, production and music.For the first half of the show we head to the UK for a lovely chat with DJ and producer Ikonika. The Hyperdub artist has spent over two decades making the world dance to her incredible tracks filled with a little bit of everything from dubstep and grime to house and a slew of other genres. There's something admirable about Ikonika's ability to shape-shift and transform into what the heck she feels like. Over the last two years, the London-bred artist's imagination has taken to her music to some incredible places.Look no further than “No Way,” Ikonika's contribution to Adult Swim's "Digitalis" compilation in 2021. We were also blown away by “I Need You,” a sultry dance track that features rolling Amapiano and catchy synth melodies on top of the star's wispy vocals.Now, Ikonika is sending the dance floor reeling with her new EP “Bubble Up” a project that showcases her vocals and love for vintage deep house. Shannon chats with Ikonika about her production process, writing music through her pregnancy and what's next for her busy career.For the second part of the show, we bounce over to Olympia, Washington to chat with producer, DJ and momma of two, Sepha.Like Ikonika, Sepha has a deep appreciation for club music from all corners of the world, and you can feel it in her sets and on her weekly Twitch streams.With two busy kiddos, at home, Sepha always finds some time to get in the flow state with her production work and DJ sets. Because I've been working on the website, I'm taking it easy this episode. Today we're going to listen to some archival material. Up first is my 2013 feature interview with Grammy award winner, Todd Edwards. Then we'll listen to a live mix and interview with Hyperdub recording artist, Ikonika, also captured in 2013. Today's show finishes off with a 2014 episode of a radio show I used to host called, What Will the Neighbours Think? It features a mix by Sergio SP celebrating 10 years of Hyperdub Records. You might remember Sergio SP aka Mr Geography aka Sandro Petrillo from episode 4 of Rave Dad's Diary. We nerd out really hard on Hyperdub Records in this episode – don't miss that. I refer to Calgary's Hifi Club a few times in these recorded segments. Earlier in November 2020, Hifi Club closed its doors permanently. In episode 3, I spoke with Hifi's Pete Emes and Sarmad Rizvi about the origins of the club. Hyperdub whiz Ikonika goes all in for mix #118, exclusively for Wild City. Sara Abdel-Hamid has been at the forefront of contemporary music worldwide ever since the release of her 2008 debut 12", 'Please/Simulacrum' via Kode9’s revered label Hyperdub. Like a lot of young producers making music in the mid and late 2000s, she was influenced by the dubstep and grime movements that were steadily taking over the UK at the time. It was the FWD and DMZ nights she attended that really shaped her earlier music. If you’ve been keeping up you’ll know that Ikonika’s sound has mutated and evolved over the years to include various forms of house, garage, UK funky, hip-hop and more. Those bright, metallic synths, 8-bit influences and fat, bubbling basslines that we love Ikonika for never really went away though, and we’re glad for it. Ikonika steps it up a few levels, energy wise, for mix #118. You know this is going to be a banger from the get-go, and if this is what’s in store this week for her India tour - we can’t wait. Kicking things off with Geko and Ard Ardz’s ‘Khalas’, Ikonika seamlessly blends a vigorous selection of tunes that spans everything from Jam City to Lil’ Kim and Britney. There’s also a fair amount of Ikonika’s own production peppered in there, so it’s a proper treat. Don’t even try getting out of this one - you’re already in too deep. 2010 looks to be a promising year for Ramadanman having already racked up a number of critically acclaimed releases on a diverse selection of labels including Soul Jazz, Tempa, Aus, Critical Music and Hessle Audio, the label he co-runs with Pangaea and Ben UFO. Ramadanman has also remixed a variety of artists including the Ragga Twins, Scuba, Beat Pharmacy, Howie B, SpectraSoul and the Bulgarian group Wickeda. In 2009, Ramadanman mixed the seventh installement of the iconic Tempa Dubstep Allstars CD alongside DJ Chef He has enjoyed DJ support from the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Skream, Mr Scruff, Craig Richards, Francois K, Kode9, Mala, Mary Anne Hobbs, Rob da Bank, Gilles Peterson and many more. He is also heavily involved in organizing the Leeds night Ruffage as well as co-hosting the now infamous Ruffage Sessions weekly internet radio show on Sub FM.
