In the first half of this week's show, Mickey and Project Censored intern Reagan Haynie speak with investigative reporter Alan MacLeod of MintPress News. MacLeod explains that a number of former high-ranking US military and security officials are now executives or board members in the video-game industry, notably with the firm that make the “Call of Duty” game, Activision. He also notes that game's portrayals of assassinations of foreign leaders as normal, and concludes that games like these are carefully designed propaganda/recruitment devices. Next, media analyst Nolan Higdon takes the corporate press to task for its refusal to fairly present alternatives to official doctrine about the Covid-19 pandemic and the measures needed to cope with its fallout. Finally, in light of Press Freedom Day, Project Censored associate director Andy Lee Roth explains the multiple ways that journalism truly is the lifeblood of democracy, and journalists serve the cause of human rights, including freedom of expression. Notes: Alan MacLeod is a senior staff writer at MintPress News, and the author of two books on journalism. He writes extensively about media bias, propaganda, and fake news. He discusses his recent article “Call of Duty is a Government Psyop.” Reagan Haynie is a graduating senior at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. She has been Project Censored's academic intern this past year. Nolan Higdon is a lecturer in education at the University of California Santa Cruz campus. He's also the author of the book The Anatomy of Fake News and other works of media analysis. His most recent dispatch on media and politics about the failures of the Fourth Estate using Covid-19 is No Turning Back. Andy Lee Roth is Associate Director of Project Censored, co-editor of the Project's annual volume, and co-coordinator of the Project's Campus Affiliates Program. He has published widely on media issues, including hist most recent article, The Lifeblood of Democracy. Welcome to Mysteries to Die For and this Toe Tag.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is normally a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you at the heart of mystery, murder, and mayhem. Today is a bonus episode we call a Toe Tag. It is the first chapter from a fresh release in the mystery, crime, and thriller genre.Today's featured release is The Midnight Call by Jodé Millman The Midnight Call was released October 11, 2022 from Level Best Books and is available from AMAZON and other book retailers.About Jodé MillmanJodé Millman is the acclaimed author of HOOKER AVENUE, an American Fiction Award Finalist for Legal Thriller, and THE MIDNIGHT CALL, which won the Independent Press, American Fiction, Independent Publisher, and the Bronze IPPY Awards for Legal Thriller. She's an attorney, a reviewer for Booktrib.com, the host/producer of The Backstage with the Bardavon podcast, and creator of The Writer's Law School. Jodé lives with her family in the Hudson Valley, where she is at work on the next installment of her "Queen City Crimes" series—novels inspired by true crimes in the region she calls home. Find her at Jodé Millman - (jodemillman.com)TG Wolff ReviewThe Midnight Call is a legal thriller. Jessica Martin is a corporate attorney whose mentor, Terence Butterfield, is in big trouble – the bloody kind. Jeremy Riley is the past-his-prime defense attorney Jess brings in to defend Terence. Hal Samuels is the Assistant District Attorney pressured to make sure justice is a big, public win. But it's not that easy – it never is. Past relationships cloud the facts until the web is indeed a tangled one.Strengths of the story. The story is told in three parts. In the first, we see firsthand the wheels that are set in motion by the midnight call. From the opening phrases through the Grand Jury, the story is well crafted, working through the angst and strategy of a murder trial. The middle part of the story shifts focus to the private lives of the main characters and how the publicity and pressure of the trial affects their choices and their families. The characters are put in difficult situations, and we watch as, for some, emotion overrules good judgment. The final sequence returns to the trial, where the lawyers roll up their sleeves and finish the job. The storytelling throughout is detailed and reasoned.Where the story fell short of ideal: Compared to other legal thrillers, The Midnight Call does not go deep into the detail of the law and courtroom procedures. This will be a plus for readers who love the air of a legal thriller without the grainy detail and a minus for those who like to get so granular, sand falls from the pages. With the story focusing on the three attorneys, the accused killer Terence Butterfield is not front and center, so we do not get his side of the story. While the story tied off the legal strings, it left me with a few unanswered questions.

See all the Healthcast at https://www.biobalancehealth.com/healthcast-blog/ Got Testosterone? The recent book written by Dr. Kathy Maupin and Brett Newcomb, MA LPC, just garnered the prestigious First Place Award for Men's Health by the Independent Press.  Got Testosterone? Explains how all-natural, bioidentical testosterone replacement therapy with long acting subcutaneous pellets can reverse the clock and help lessen the symptoms of age-related diseases such as, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, osteoporosis, obesity, high cholesterol among other health issues that occur with aging. Conducted annually, the IPPY awards honor the year's best independently published titles from around the world. According to IPPY officials, the award “rewards those who exhibit the courage, innovation, and creativity to bring about change in the world of publishing.” Brett and I are so thankful to our writing mentor, Nancy Erickson (the Book Professor) for submitting our book for consideration for this award. We were so surprised when our book won first place for this coveted publishing award. We want to encourage all men to read Got Testosterone? so they can become healthy, virile and satisfied with their health and their lives no matter how old they are. I believe if healthcare would accept the fact that the majority of men NEED testosterone replacement after age 50, and that those men who receive Testosterone pellets will avoid the diseases of aging (Cardio-vascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, cancer autoimmune diseases, diseases of poor immunity that cause more frequent infections). Why does medicine in the US and Europe concentrate on “fixing” one symptom or disease at a time, and not attend to treating a patient globally by preventing disease,  and treating the whole patient? How medical information is taught and transmitted to patients: You learn about your condition and the treatment from your doctor, you doctor is guided by guidelines from his specialty's governing group who certifies specialty physicians like ACOG who certifies OBGYNs , then doctors in that specialty learn new information from drug companies, conferences and journals from his or her specialty organization. When new research is done in multiple specialties and by many drug companies and research organizations, who puts it together across specialty lines? No one! There is no one to develop protocols, or new treatment plans that involve many specialty groups. That is what Brett and I accomplished with this book: we combined research from more than 5 specialties of medicine, as well as American and European medical research and translated it into easy to understand tables and graphs as well as bulleted points that are meant to make important information memorable to our readers. In the medical world it is difficult to get practical truthful information about new medical treatments that is understandable to lay people. We  have translated complicated medical research and practical information about how vital testosterone is to men into entertaining and realistic advice. It is important for lay people to know the truth about who needs testosterone replacement, the most effective and safest way to take it, along with the risks and benefits of T replacement. We have found that bio-identical testosterone pellets are the best form of testosterone for men and women. Our book, Got Testosterone? Men-Return to the Sexier, Stronger, Smarter You! is easy to find on-line in the Amazon bookstore, and it is available at Dr. Maupin's office as well. Do yourself and the man in your life a favor and read it! Please watch for the audio version of our book coming out soon.

On November 6, 2019, Dale M. Brumfield delivered a Banner Lecture, “The Notorious History of the Virginia State Penitentiary.” In 1796, the Virginia General Assembly finally reformed Virginia’s penal laws and embraced Thomas Jefferson’s theory of “labor in confinement.” The Virginia State Penitentiary cornerstone was laid August 19, 1797, near the intersection of what is today Belvidere and Spring Streets, and the first prisoner, a man named Thomas Merryman, was admitted April 1, 1800. For the next 190 years, the penitentiary endured four fires, an earthquake, and numerous riots and escapes. In 1908, the electric chair was introduced, and 246 condemned men and one woman were executed there before the facility was demolished in 1991. Author, journalist, and cultural archaeologist Dale Brumfield will trace the sometimes cruel, sometimes uplifting history of the personalities within this former notorious Richmond landmark. As well as working as a local journalist, Dale Brumfield is the Field Director for Virginians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty and the author of ten books, including Virginia State Penitentiary: A Notorious History and Richmond Independent Press and Independent Press in DC and Virginia: An Underground History. His stories have appeared in Richmond Magazine, Style Weekly, the Staunton News Leader, Austin Chronicle, Richmond Times-Dispatch, and USA Today, among others.

By only talking about horse-races and scandals, the press is letting the GOP get away with murder, while keeping people ignorant about Democratic Party solutions to our problems.David Brock from Media Matters for America joins Thom to discuss why our media is broken, and why Billionaire owned media is working as a propaganda arm of the oligarchs-- threatening our very democracy.Plus- given the recent protests and internal instability in Iran, has Trump's policy there brought us closer to a nightmare scenario, what guest Jamal Abdhi calls a 'combustible moment'?

This week's Global Research News Hour investigates some of the post 2016 mechanisms being implemented to restrict dissident news and analysis in the name of fighting fake news and 'foreign interference' in political affairs. Whitney Webb, author of a major expose on a neocon backed 'news rating agency' called Newsguard comes in to provide background on why independent media sites should be concerned about this organization. Our next guest, Patrick Henningsen, geopolitical analyst and founder of 21st Century Wire, expands on this 'Fake News Patrol' Trojan Horse by discussing social media partnerships with less than wholesome entities like the Atlantic Council, introduces listeners to something called the Integrity Initiative headquartered in Great Britain which continues the mission of protecting democratic processes from Russian influence, and points to the hazards he sees in a Canadian government initiative proposing to protect elections from foreign (Russian) meddling.
