I think we are officially living in the era of outsourced opinions.People don't experience things anymore… they inherit opinions about things. This episode starts with my continued obsession with Drake's ICEMAN and why I genuinely believe it may be his best overall body of work. Songs like “Shabang,” “2 HARD 4 THE RADIO,” “National Treasures,” “Janice STFU” and especially “Make Them Remember” somehow keep getting BETTER the more I listen to them. But what confuses me is how many people — even self-proclaimed Drake fans — already decided:“Drake fell off.”Which led me into a much bigger conversation about how modern discourse works.Because the same thing is happening to SGA.Back-to-back MVP.Three straight years as the one seed in the Western Conference.Elite consistency. And somehow the dominant narrative is still:“free throw merchant.”Which naturally brings me back to Steph Curry discourse, Luka contradictions, and eventually James Harden — whose “playoff choker” label may have started under completely flawed logic considering he was mostly losing to the SAME Warriors dynasty people say nobody could beat. This episode is really about:groupthinknarrative cultureanti-dominance fatigueinternet consensusselective logicand why people seem less interested in thinking independently nowWe discuss:why ICEMAN feels different emotionallywhy replay value matters more than first reactionswhy people build logic around conclusions instead of conclusions around logicDrake & SGA parallelsSteph's whistleLuka's contradictionsHarden's unfair historical framingand why sustained greatness now creates exhaustion instead of admirationSome people don't listen to music anymore…they listen to reactions to music. Some people don't watch basketball anymore…they watch narratives about basketball.

Philippians 2:3-4; Psalm 15:5 - Stable and Secure

Welcometo Pastor's Chat. Today we're in Psalm 15, and we're looking at verse 5. We'vebeen talking about how to practice what the Apostle Paul encouraged the churchat Philippi to do in Philippians 2:3–4: to esteem others better than themselvesand to carry about their lives in lowliness of mind and humility. When we dothat, there are practical things we need to do. To me, Psalm 15 describes someof these very practical applications we can make in our lives that will help usfulfill what Paul talked about in Philippians 2. Nowwe come down to verse 5. Verse 5 says this: “He who does not put out hismoney at usury, nor does he take a bribe against the innocent.” Now theword “usury” usually has to do with interest. You do not put out your moneysimply for oppressive gain through interest. This is not saying you should notinvest in the stock market. It is not saying you should not put your money in asavings account that draws interest. This is talking about personal financialintegrity. Inall of our business dealings, God cares about how we treat people financially. In the Old Testament, you will find several cases where people loaned out moneyto make interest, but they charged exorbitant interest. They literally broughthardship upon other people and almost placed them into slavery because of theinterest they demanded. Sometimes this still happens in our culture and societytoday. The Bible is telling us, as believers, that we are not to put hardshipon others financially simply for our own personal gain. Again,He is speaking about our finances and our business dealings. God cares abouthow we treat others financially. In Proverbs 11:1 it says, “Dishonest scalesare an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is His delight.” If wewant to enjoy fellowship with God, we must live honestly and fairly. ThenDavid closes this chapter with a beautiful promise: “He who does thesethings shall never be moved.” Oh,my friend, what stability! What security! The person who walks with God has asteady life. Trials may come. Storms may rage. But they are anchored in theLord. Psalm 16:8 says, “I have set the Lord always before me; because He isat my right hand I shall not be moved.” Aswe close this chapter, may we remember something very important: none of usperfectly measure up to Psalm 15. If we are honest, we all have failed in ourspeech, our thoughts, our tongue, our motives, and our actions. Ultimately,Psalm 15 points us to Jesus Christ, the only perfectly righteous One who trulyfulfilled every one of these qualities. He alone walked uprightly. He alonealways spoke the truth. He alone never sinned with His tongue. He aloneperfectly pleased the Father. Becauseof His death and resurrection, we can be forgiven, cleansed, and brought intofellowship with God. Hebrews 10:19 says, “Therefore, brethren, havingboldness to enter into the Holiest by the blood of Jesus.” Today, if wereally want fellowship with Jesus Christ—sweet fellowship with the Lord—we mustwalk closely with Christ, confess sin quickly, guard our tongues, livehonestly, and cultivate a heart that fears God. I'masking today: Is there anything in your life that is hindering your fellowshipwith the Lord? Are you walking uprightly before Him? Are you speaking the truthin your heart? My friend, when you draw near to God, we are promised that Hewill draw near to you (James 4:8). Itrust and pray that you, by God's grace and through the Holy Spirit, live outthese truths found in Psalm 15, so that God's promise will be fulfilled as youenjoy and experience a life of stability and security. Godbless you and may you have a wonderful, wonderful day!

Philippians 2:3-4; Psalm 15:4 - Taking the Blame and the Pain

Welcometo Pastor's Chat. Today we're studying Psalm 15, talking about a person wholives a life of integrity. His character, his walk with God, and his fellowshipwith the Lord are so real that he does things that cause him to be a stable, secure kind of person who literally displays the glory of God in his life everyday. Nowwe come down to verse 4. Here in verse 4b, we find a very remarkable statement:“He who swears to his own hurt and does not change.” This verse isdescribing a person who keeps his word even when it costs him something. Thisis a rare quality today in our culture, because people often break theirpromises when circumstances become inconvenient.  Thisverse jumped out at me years ago: “He who swears to his own hurt and changesnot.” We often do just the opposite. So many times, when we're accused or whensomething takes place, we defer the blame to someone else. “The devil made medo it.” “My wife caused the problem.” “My husband caused the problem.” “My bossis at fault and has made this whole mess for us.” Buthere is a powerful truth. As we try to understand the person who walks withGod, enjoys fellowship with God, and has the lowliness of mind that Paul talksabout in Philippians chapter 2—esteeming others better than himself—this is apowerful thought: you swear to your own hurt and do not change. Sometimes youmay even take the blame for something you didn't do. NowI know when I say that, especially today, people respond, “I'll never do that. Why should I take the blame for something I didn't do?” Sometimes, to keeppeace. Maybe just to keep your mouth shut when accusations come. Instead oftrying to defer the blame or defend yourself—even when you truly didn't doit—you simply remain silent. Youmight say, “How can I do that?” Let me tell you—Jesus did exactly this. He tookthe blame for something He didn't do. He took your sin, my sin, and the sin ofthe whole world upon His shoulders. He took it to the cross. He paid a terribleprice when He “swore to His own hurt and did not change.” He simplysaid, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Actually,He prayed for those who were guilty and who were to blame for putting Him onthe cross. To the thief on the cross, He said, “Today you will be with Me inparadise.” That thief admitted, “I am getting what I justly deserve.” YetJesus got what we justly deserved in our place. He swore to His own hurt anddid not change. Sosometimes—not every situation, but many times—the situation calls for us to saynothing. Just say nothing. Take the blame and have peace with those around us,even if it means pain, hurt, or loss for us. Jesus died on that cross—aterrible death. He took the blame for something He didn't do. If He did that, don't you think maybe we could ask God for grace sometimes to do the same? Whenthings happen and we are being blamed, perhaps we should just keep our mouthsshut instead of trying to fight back, blame others, or expose everyoneinvolved. Now listen, there are times when justice must be pursued. God is aGod of justice. God says, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”Romans chapter 12. Solet's try to practice this the best we can. This is a hard one. I stillremember memorizing this verse and thinking, “Wow, I don't know if I can dothis every time I need to.”  But by God'sgrace, and by looking to our example—Jesus Christ on the cross—"when Hewas reviled, He reviled not again.” Ohmy friend, may God help us to have that kind of spirit and that kind ofattitude. I trust this encourages you today and does not discourage you. Godbless and may you have a wonderful, wonderful day!

Philippians 2:1-2 - The Right Marks for Spiritual Unity

Pastor Mike Impact Ministries

Play Episode Listen Later May 6, 2026 5:06

Nowwe are going to continue in Philippians 2, and today we are talking about theright marks of spiritual unity. Yesterday we talked about the right motive forspiritual unity in the first verse which lead to these marks. “Therefore ifthere is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowshipof the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by beinglike-minded.” Then he goes on to say, “having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.” Today, we want to look atthese four things: being like-minded, having the same love, being of oneaccord, and of one mind. These are the four marks of spiritual unity. Thesame mind means thinking the same way. Now this does not meanuniformity in every opinion. It means that our thinking is being shaped by themind of Christ. It has nothing to do with our preferences or opinions about howthings ought to be done in the church, or the music that should be sung—whetherit be contemporary or traditional. No, it means when it comes to the gospel ofJesus Christ and the very essentials of what our faith is about, we have unity, and we have the mind of Christ. First Corinthians 2:16 says, “we have themind of Christ.” The way we have this is that “we are not conformed tothis world, but we are transformed by the renewing of our minds” in theHoly Spirit and in the Word of God” (Romans 12:2). Second,we see the mark of the same love. Now this is not emotional preference, but deliberate, sacrificial love that seeks the good of others. Jesus said inJohn 13:34–35, “A new commandment I give you, that you love one another as Ihave loved you. By this all will know that you are My disciples if you havelove for one another.” In First John 3:16, “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us.” What love is that? The love of Godin Christ Jesus through His death on the cross. We experience that love, and weare to have that same love for one another. Thenone accord, which literally means “one-souled”—hearts knit together indeep spiritual connection. Acts 4:32 tells us of the early church: “Now themultitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul.” So we havethat as a mark of spiritual unity. Lastly,of one mind. This is having a single purpose—the glory of Jesus Christand the advancement of the gospel. Remember Paul said earlier in Philippians1:27 that we are “to stand fast in one spirit, with one mind strivingtogether for the faith of the gospel”. Sothis is not shallow unity. This is deep. It is Spirit-produced harmony. Infact, it reflects something very profound—it is the unity of the Trinityitself. Jesus prayed about this in John 17, that His followers would be one asHe and the Father are one. This is internal—and eternal too, for that matter.Paul is not focusing on rules or structure. He is focusing on our hearts, ourminds, and our attitudes. Whenthe Spirit produces this kind of unity, the church becomes something powerful, something attractive. It's like iron filings drawn to a magnet. Even whenpressures try to pull them apart, something stronger pulls them back together. Haveyou ever been a part of a church like that—one that is warm, loving, and has asense of belonging that is unmistakable? Oh, my friend, that is what we need inour country today: churches like that. Thisis what Paul calls for. You will notice it all begins when the truth of verse 1shapes the attitudes here of verse 2 in our hearts. God help us as we let Himdo that in us each and every day. God bless and may youhave a wonderful, wonderful day!

Todaywe are continuing to look at Philippians 1:12–18. Paul is talking about hiscircumstances here. Paul had other plans, no doubt, for what he thought Godwanted him to do. Yet the Holy Spirit of God had other plans for him. God hashim in prison for a purpose. We are talking about what happens when life doesnot go as we planned it. Yesterdaywe began telling the story about Joseph. Joseph was thrown into a pit by hisbrothers. Then he went to Potiphar's house in Egypt as a slave. Then he endedup in a prison in Egypt. But the next thing you know, God reveals and unveilsthe vision that Joseph had for himself. He becomes next to Pharaoh, ruler overall of Egypt, and saves not only the land of Egypt from a great famine but alsohis family. Nowwe are looking at Philippians 1:12, where Paul says, “But I want you toknow, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned outfor the furtherance of the gospel.” Paul is in prison. He is in chains. Heis chained between guards, but there he has the opportunity to share the goodnews of Jesus Christ. So even in our setbacks, even in our disappointments, even in situations we never would choose, God is working. God can use it allfor His glory to bring about the furtherance of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Anothergreat story after the book of Genesis is in Exodus—the story of Moses. Moses, when he is 40 years old and has been trained in all the arts and military waysof the Egyptians, thinks he is going to deliver the people of Israel. Thishappens some 400 years, after Joseph and Moses now is going to deliver them. Hestarts that process and kills an Egyptian. Then he ends up running for hislife. For the next 40 years of his life he lives in a desert. He thought Godwas going to use him earlier. He had all the equipment. He had all theknowledge. He had all the background—everything. Yet God wanted to put him outthere in a desert, watching smelly sheep. Moses would have never planned that. But God had a plan in preparing Moses to become the great leader of the nationof Israel, to bring them out of bondage, to be their deliverer, to take them tothe promised land, and to lead them for the next 40 years through thewilderness. Ohmy friend, it is awesome how God works in our lives through the strangestsituations and circumstances that we would never choose. Thenyou think of David—little David, maybe 12 or 13 years old—out playing his harpon a hillside, praising God, worshiping, and getting to know Him. He is lookingat creation, watching God's sheep, and thinking, “Man, it is awesome takingcare of these sheep.” He begins to dream about what God might want to use himfor. He ends up being anointed king by Samuel when he was around 15 years old.He has no idea what that means, but wow, something good is happening. The nextthing you know, he kills Goliath, and everybody is excited about David. Butthen Saul gets jealous. For the next 12 to 15 years, David is fleeing for hislife—something he would never choose. But he gathers a band of men to followhim. He begins to learn how to trust God as his life is at risk every day. Godis preparing him to be the great King David of Israel for the next 40 yearsafter he becomes king at 30 years of age. Sometimesthings happen that we think are bad, but God is preparing us. God is working inour lives. So do not throw in the towel. Do not quit. Keep on keeping on. Godwill continue to do something that will amaze you. Paul says, “Here I am inprison, but it has turned out for the furtherance of the gospel.” We will talkmore about that in the next few days. Today, think about what God might be doing in your life today, despite yourcircumstances.

Reading of the Red Guild book of the Graduates of Intentional Creativity-since 2014 we have been signing this book at in person gatherings, this is at Wild Water Creek. Graduation as a Curate - being blessed by a red stole embroidered by Naa Kwarley and given to me by Liz. This is at Stardust Ranch. The ring of roses is the circle the graduates stepped into….including me.On the Cusp of Equinox: A Turning of the Lineage“You will be bathed in stardust” Carmen Baraka to Caron McCloudWe are on the cusp of the equinox and the new Spring moon. The cherry trees are blooming, and a fine yellow dust from the oak trees settles over everything—including me, if I sit here long enough.I've just come back from a swim. I'm sitting in the sun. And as usual, my thoughts turn to you. Yes, you.The Love That Chose Another PathI didn't get to have children. After many miscarriages, I found myself holding so much love—so much desire to nurture—and nowhere traditional to place it.I had been so deeply loved, so well nurtured, that consciously or unconsciously, I chose to channel that love into community. But I didn't want something temporary. I wanted something enduring. Not people who came and went—but people who might stay for a lifetime. Or maybe even longer. Our Elder Carmen Baraka used to say, at the most meaningful gatherings:“Maybe we agreed to meet here.”I've always loved that idea. This idea weaves into the ancient knowing of the red thread—that we are already connected, already called. That each of us carries a piece, and that we are here to witness one another's stories.Today, I invite you to witness mine. A personal and professional graduation.I recently got to Graduate with the last graduating class for Color of Woman (as it now exists). I graduated with 80 women (who will be acknowledged during the Equinox Ceremony. I am officially now carrying my title as Curate with many other women.Becoming the MatriarchThis is the evolution of a sacred feminine entrepreneur into a matriarch.I'm a few months away from turning 56. I still don't have children of my own, and my relationship to community is changing. But something else has settled in. A wisdom. An elemental wisdom. It feels both deeply sacred and completely essential—so basic, and yet strangely elusive. Completing a CycleI've just completed a body of work that began in my early twenties with Color of Woman—a journal filled with the images that awakened me. That became 25 years of art galleries and eventually the Intentional Creativity Teacher Training. In the coloring book, the first images are where I came into myself.Where I said yes to my sacred work. That cycle is completing. What a joy. What a challenge. What a gift.Because the truth is—I am an artist.A poet.A ritualist.I am not a COO.I am not a president.I don't even resonate with the word “founder.”I am a Lineage-Keeper.The Teachings Are SimpleWhat I carry is both from this lifetime and from the ancestors. And what I teach is incredibly simple:Make what you make with love.Place your intention into it.When you bring your focus to what you are creating, it changes—and so do you.Everything is frequency. When you attune your frequency, your world shifts. This language is my mother tongue. And when women hear it, they remember:“Oh yes… I know this.”It is easy to understand. It takes practice to live. What Was Taken—and What ReturnsThere was a time when this knowing was not lost. But over thousands of years, systems of domination stripped women of their innate knowing. We need to restore that knowing from within our stardust bones. This is the Pathway of 9 Promises that I teach.* Shaping who we are and who we are becoming: Identity and Living from Source* Knowing what we wish to speak from Intelligence: Access to Voice and Speaking* Being connected with how we fee our sensuality: Bodily sovereignty and Health* Trust in our own thoughts and Intelligence - Curating our Consciousness* To define our Spirituality - Aligning with our Soul and Higher Self * To gain access to Prosperity - Activating Manifestation in the ways of women* Unbridled Free Self-Expression - Catalyze Liberation * Living Your Calling: Co-creating Vision and Designing your Life * Authority: Claiming a Self Initiation Ceremony to mark moving from where you have been to where you are going nowWe were taught to live from the mind, disconnected from the body.To distrust our intuition. To believe our Souls could be owned.None of this is true.Your soul cannot be brokered.Your body cannot be owned.Your voice cannot be taken—only suppressed. As we are seeing right now how often women's voices are being supressed. The Tension of Modern StructuresAnd yet, here we are. Here I am. Working inside systems that were never designed for us.For the past decade, I have done my best to participate in business without becoming extractive. I've sat in meetings, studied numbers, navigated software, and built systems and managed teams and navigated taxes and oh so many things that were not in my wheel house. And what I've found is this:It is incredibly complex. And it is not where I come alive. (and I am not good at it)What brings me alive is teaching.Circle.Ritual.Art.Poetry.Inviting transformation. That is where I belong. In circle with my teachings.A Necessary SimplificationSo I am making a change. Not because I am stepping away—but because I am stepping in.I am simplifying everything. What is emerging is called:Stardust LineageA distilled expression of everything I've learned and taught.Rooted in my book, Stardust Bones, this work will guide the next 3–5 years of my life and teaching. What Comes NextThis work will continue to be accessible - yet centered within the one thing that I am here to teach for this next cycle. This work is meant to live through you.To be taught in your own voice. Shared in your own way. Carried into your own communities.Because the teachings themselves are simple, essential, and universal. This is a Rites of Passage I believe all women can benefit from at least once in her life.A Living LineageThere are nine core promises within this work—each one is a direct reclamation of what was once suppressed. And what I realized when I taught it the first time (in a different template) was this: These promises are not new. They are the exact places where women have been silenced—and are now being restored. An Invitation and a ReleaseSome of you will walk forward with me into this next chapter. And some of you will feel complete with the time we shared. Both are right.I release any threads that are ready to be released—with deep gratitude. There is no need to stay if it is not aligned. You will feel the resonance if it is.A Love That RemainsThis love I feel for you—It is real. It is the truest thing I know.It is my mother tongue. And as I find my way forward—more sovereign, yet still deeply connected—I carry you with me.Those beside me.Those behind me.Those ahead of me, calling me forward.I Am Not Stepping OutI am stepping in. And some of you will step in with me. I will see you on the path.Shiloh Sophia ”And the point is, you have to design a point for yourself” Caron McCloud“We are all cooling sacks of stars” Sue Hoya Sellars“When you can hear the stories of the past, the information of the future and the power of the now, understanding that all aspects are in play at all times, this juxtaposition of realities triggers Omni Presence in a way that can be understood. Everything actually isn't always fleeting, not if you see it as all aspects in play simultaneously. When we can truly understand the depth and breadth, then we can understand that everything that has been and will be, the knowledge of all time, is already within us. We must move through the Corridors - the portals of our timeless mind, body, spirit, the realm of the oneness of creator, of source, the realms of all possibilities. Native peoples, indigenous peoples have an understanding of quantum physics and quantum mechanics but just have different language for it. There is no end to the circle, it is actually the everything and the closely concurring nothingness. That place where time and space are moving through you, and you are the observer and the recipient of cosmic favor. Where is the jurisdiction of truth? It's in the unfolding of the layers of our existence.” Carmen Baraka "The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any” Alice Walker Get full access to Tea with the Muse at teawiththemuse.substack.com/subscribe

This week's episode is a conversation with Xenia Marie Ross Viray, who is the creator of the platform and iterations of Myths of Creation, an interdisciplinary artist who—quite literally—gets paid to be herself. Not in a “personal brand” way.In a devotional to creativity, consciousness, and resonance kind of way.We talk about what it actually looks like to build a body of work—and a business—without contorting yourself for the algorithm.Inside the episode:* Why your “content” might actually be your laboratory, not your marketing* The difference between authenticity and unmasking (and why one of them is much scarier)* How trying to “perform for the algorithm” quietly erodes the very thing that makes people choose you* What it means to create from resonance instead of strategy—and then translate it into something people can understand* The trap of constant visibility, especially nowWe also go deeper than business.Into the emotional, political, and psychological reality of being online right now:* The dissonance of building a business on social media while being harmed by it* What it means to be a sensitive, creative person in a time of constant crisis and information overload* How algorithms fracture reality—and why it's getting harder to actually talk to each other* The grief of losing intergenerational understanding (and the question: where are our elders?)And then—because we can't not—we go cosmic. We talk about:* Creativity as a portal for new consciousness* Art, music, and even the Olympics as evidence that joy and expression can shift collective energy* The idea that we're not just resisting broken systems—we're being asked to create entirely new onesOne of the most grounding threads throughout the conversation:You don't have to do it all the same way. Some people are here to resist. Some are here to rebel. Some are here to create. Most of us are doing all three—just in different proportions, at different times. And none of those roles are more valuable than the others. If you've been feeling:* burnt out by social media* confused about what to share (or whether to share at all)* caught between wanting to grow your business and wanting to opt out of the noise* or quietly craving a more human, more magical way of moving through your workthis episode will meet you there. Not with a formula. But with a reorientation back to yourself.PS. We hear it all the time. “You just need to move on.” But what if moving on is not actually what creates healing? In this episode, I explore the difference between moving on and moving forward, and why this distinction matters so much when you have lived through something painful, meaningful, or life-shaping.Moving on often implies erasing, minimizing, or trying to be unaffected by what happened. Moving forward is different. It is integrative. It allows you to carry the wisdom while releasing the weight.I share how unprocessed experiences do not disappear just because time passes, and how real healing comes from allowing an experience to have a place without letting it define your future. You will also learn the three-step process I teach for moving forward in a grounded, practical way:The Extraction Process — identifying what you are taking with youThe Release Process — letting go of what was never yours to carryThe Integration Process — allowing the experience to inform how you live nowWe also explore why forgiveness is often misunderstood, and how it naturally unfolds when integration has occurred rather than being something you force. If you have ever wondered why something from your past still carries emotional charge, or how to move forward without bypassing what mattered, this episode will meet you there.Resources mentioned:My book In Pursuit (available in paperback, hardcover, Kindle, and Audible)Work with me: https://jessicasmarro.comIf this episode resonated, I would love to hear what stayed with you. Todaywe're continuing in Ephesians chapter 6, where the Apostle Paul is teachingbelievers how to stand strong in spiritual warfare. And our verse today isEphesians 6:17: “And take the helmet of salvation…” Now Paul says morein this verse—he also mentions the sword of the Spirit—but today I want tofocus only on this one piece of armor: The helmet of salvation. Because ifthere is one place Satan loves to attack, it is the believer's mind. And ifthere is one thing God wants to protect, strengthen, and stabilize in theChristian life, it is the mind. First, the Helmet Protects the Most Vulnerable Place: The MindLetme begin with something very simple. A soldier can take a wound in the arm andstill fight. He can take a wound in the leg and still move. But a blow to thehead can be fatal. That's why Roman soldiers would never enter battle without ahelmet. We have read that these helmets were sometimes made of thick leather, and other times heavy metal, and they often had pieces that protected thecheeks and face. In other words, this was not decorative. It was essential for theirprotection in the battle. Weneed to remember that the head is the center of our intellectual life, the seatof thought, reason, and understanding. So Paul is telling us that if Satan canget control of your thinking, he can influence your living. That is why thebattle for the Christian is usually a battle for the mind. I will never forgetthat in my early years as pastor I had an entire message called “The Battle forthe Mind.” Right after that a book came out—I believe by Tim LaHaye—called “TheBattle for the Mind”. Kiddingly, I would say, I think he got it from me. Thereal battle is right there in your thinking.  Second,Satan Attacks the Mind Because That's Where He Has Always WorkedYoumight remember going back to Genesis chapter 3. That is where Satan attackedEve—through her mind. That is what God is speaking to us about. He did notbegin by telling her to commit a gross sin. He began by planting a thought. What was that thought? “Has God indeed said?” The moment Eve beganquestioning the Word of God, her mind became the battlefield. Paul even warnsChristians that Satan still works the same way in 2 Corinthians 11:3: “But Ifear lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your mindsmay be corrupted.” That is his strategy. Satan's first move is almostalways to distort the truth, to question God's goodness, to twist theScripture, and to weaken confidence in what God has said. When that happens, the believer becomes spiritually vulnerable. Third,The Helmet of Salvation Is Not About Getting Saved Again. Nowwe need to be very clear about something. Paul is writing to believers. He'snot giving an evangelistic invitation. He's telling Christians how to standfirm. So when Paul says, “take the helmet of salvation,” he is not saying, “getsaved again.” You don't put on the helmet by repeating a prayer. You don't puton the helmet by re-doing your conversion. Only saved people can wear God'sarmor. The armor is not for people outside Christ. The armor is for believerswho are already in the fight. So what does Paul mean? Fourth,The Helmet of Salvation Is Assurance and Hope—The Confidence That You Belong toChristMyfriend, Satan's blows are aimed at our security. The two sharp edges of Satan'ssword are discouragement and doubt. You can be assured he is going to use them.I'll never forget what Dr. Falwell said many times during my years at LynchburgBaptist College (today Liberty University): He said, “Satan favorite tool tokeep the Christian down is the tool of discouragement. God cannot use adiscouraged Christian.” We will be looking more about the “helmet of salvation”over the next few days.  Godbless you, and may you have a wonderful, wonderful day.

Most men were taught the same script: make more money, buy the bigger house, upgrade the cars, send the kids to better schools… and then you'll be worthy of love, respect, and a “good life.”What if that script is actually wrecking relationships, families, and mental health? In this episode, I bring back social worker and men's advocate Jack Kammer for a very un-LinkedIn conversation about money, masculinity, and the silent cost of chasing the upgraded American Dream. We dig into how lifestyle inflation and “do better than your parents” expectations have turned normal men into stressed-out providers trapped in lives they don't even want—while everyone pretends this is success. We talk about:* Why a 900 sq. ft. family home used to be normal—and why the 3,200 sq. ft., 3-car-garage life often destroys connection instead of creating it* How modern relationship expectations still put financial failure almost entirely on men, even when women earn just as much (or more)* The branding problem of men: how “men are dangerous/useless” became the dominant cultural story—and what that does to normal, good men* Why so many guys quietly check out (MGTOW/incel energy) and why that's really about exhaustion and sadness, not hatred of women* The case for redefining “provider” away from just money and toward presence, skills, emotional stability, and contribution* My own journey from big house + private school life into a small city apartment… and why I'm happier and more connected nowWe also get into sovereignty: what it looks like for a man to stop being a walking ATM, reclaim his time and identity, and still be deeply valuable in his family and community—without waiting for culture to hand him permission. If you're a founder, operator, or executive who's played the high-income game and still ended up lonely, resentful, or burned out, this one will hit close to home. This isn't financial advice. Thefirst thing that we see as an evidence of spiritual maturity and spiritualgrowth is that we are Christlike in our attitude, actions and speech. Jesus wasalways submitted to the will of His Father. Read the Gospels. Jesus always didHis Father's will. This quote from Psalms is most descriptive of Jesus: “Ihad delight to do Thy will. Oh my God. Thy law is written within my heart” (Psalm40:8). That was the heart and mind of Jesus, my friend. That's what happens tous when we're submitted in obedience to the will of God. As Oswalt Chamberssaid in one of his writings.  We'vebeen perfectly adjusted to the fact that Christ lives in us, and we now know andlive in His righteousness. We're robed in that righteousness, and we want towalk with Him with all of our heart. It's a surrendered life, as Andrew Murrayput it. Thenwe see the second evidence of our spiritual growth is stability. We're nolonger children tossed to and fro. Today, we looking at the third evidence of our spiritual growth that wefind in verse 15: “But speaking the truth in love may grow up in allthings unto Him who is the head Christ”. The third evidence of spiritualmaturity is that we consistently “speak the truth in love”. Someonehas said that truth without love is brutality, but love without truth ishypocrisy. We somehow another, by the grace of God, can combine the two. Youmust have truth expressed in love. I love that verse in Psalm 85:10 where itsays, "Love and truth and mercy have met. Righteousness and peace havekissed." I believe this happened at the cross of Calvary. It was therethe truth of God, that we're sinners that our sin must be punished, met withthe love and mercy of God, as Christ died in our place for our sins. We now canbe set free from our sin and experience peace along with God's righteousness! Nowwe can speak truth out of a heart of love to those around us because we'veexperienced the love of God. 1 John 4:7-11 tells us where this love comes from:"Beloved, let us love one another. For love is of God, and everyone wholoves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God. ForGod is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God hassent His only begotten Son into the world that we might live through Him. Inthis is love, not that we love God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to bethe propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought to loveone another." Evidencethat we have spiritual maturity is that we can love, but we love in truth. We speakthe truth in love. We don't speak the truth to hurt, to condemn, todestroy, to tear down. We speak it in love to build up, to encourage, to help aperson get back on track. We speak the truth in love. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8tells us the kind of love that God has and that we should have. “Lovesuffers long. Love is kind. Love does not envy. Love does not parade itself. Isnot puffed up. Does not behave rudely. Does not seek its own. Is not provoked.Thinks no evil, does not rejoice in iniquity, rejoices in the truth, love bearsall things.” Whenwe have a heart that is surrendered and obedient to the will of the Lord GodAlmighty, we will have the mind of Christ, and we will speak the truth withlove. It will be evidence that there is something in our heart that's differentthan when the natural man is in control of our lives and tearing down anddestroying the lives of those around us as we see so often in Christian circles.God help us to have this mark of spiritual maturity, and spiritual growth, andthat is “speaking the truth in love”. Godbless!

Yesterdaywe talked about what it means to be apostle. Those were the 12 that Jesusoriginally chose (Matthew 10:1-4). Specifically, these Apostles had to be a witnessof Jesus life and ministry since His baptism and also His resurrection (Acts1:21-22). These were specially chosen men we read about in the Book of Actsthat laid the foundation of the church. But also other special group thatassisted in laying the foundation of the church in the first century were menwho were called the prophets. Nowwe usually think of a prophet in the Old Testament of someone that predicts thefuture. God gave these men special revelation and insight to talk about thingsto come. But in the New Testament, the prophet was someone who forthtold theword of God. Remember in the first century New Testament church in the book ofActs, they did not have a New Testament. Most of the believers did not havecopies of the Old Testament. Those were on scrolls and these were in thesynagogues. Therefore, they needed the office of a prophet who also laid thefoundation of the church along with the apostles.  Thesepeople were gifted by the Holy Spirit with special knowledge and wisdom. Weread in 1 Corinthians 13:2, "Though I have the gift of prophecy andunderstand all mysteries and all knowledge…." This gift and officegave them special insight to God's truths. They could proclaim to the localchurch a direct revelation from God that would help the early believers to knowand understand the truth and will of God concerning the mystery and ministry ofthe church along with specific application of God's Word concerning theirlives. At the same time many of these gifted men, like Paul, also gave revelationabout future events concerning the future of the church in the last days asthey were inspired to write letters to the churches. Inthe book of Romans 12:4-8 we find that there are seven spiritual gifts that arementioned. The first one that is mentioned in Romans 12:6 is prophesy alongwith instruction on how to exercise the gift. I believe that as important andnecessary as it was for all the spiritual gifts to be exercised in the localchurch that it also appears that these gifts are listed in order of theirimportance as far as their use in the church. Here in Ephesians 4:11 the giftand office of Apostleship is of course the first one. And as far as this giftand office is concerned, it was for very a specific purpose and for a veryspecific time period at the beginning and foundation of the church. Nextin importance would be the gift of prophecy.  In 1 Corinthians 14:1, Paul writes: “Pursuelove, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy”. Thenhe goes on to explain what the purpose of prophecy is in verses 2-5: “But he who prophesies speaksedification and exhortation and comfort to men. Sothis spiritual gift of prophecy was given to the men to come alongside the menwho had the gift of Apostleship to specially lay the foundation. You see thisin Ephesians 2:20: “Having been built on the foundation of the apostles andprophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone”. So they preached JesusChrist. They taught that Jesus was the head of the body, the chief cornerstone. Ibelieve that today it is possible the gift of prophecy is still able to beexercised, but it has to do with a person who is able to lead the church insuch a way that he understands and has special discernment of what is right andwrong in a specific way and is able to call out evil. Still, other Biblescholars believe the gift of prophecy expired with the early church when the NewTestament was completed. What matters today is that we still have love andunity and make the name and salvation of Jesus known to everyone we can! Godbless!

Nowwe are looking at the unity that especially needs to be there because of thegifts of the Spirit which differ for individuals in the church. In the body ofChrist, the Church, we have different gifts, but we should still have unitybecause we need each other, with each other's Spiritual gifts to be built up inthe body of Jesus Christ. We're going to see that this is what Paul is talkingabout in these verses.  So,in these verses 7-11, Paul moves on from what all Christians have in common tohow Christians differ from each other. He's discussing the variety andindividuality within the unity of the Spirit because God has given eachbeliever at least two to three gifts. You find this taught in 1 Corinthians12:4-11: “Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And thereare differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there arediversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. Butthe manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal…..Butall these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every manseverally as He will.” Didyou notice that the “Holy Spirit gives to each man severally as Hewills." I believe that's speaking of at least maybe two to threegifts. I believe we have one primary spiritual gift along with a few others. Ialso believe we can still all practice many of the Spiritual gifts such asserving, giving, faith, and so on. You find these Spiritual gifts listed inthree main passages in the New Testament: Romans 12; here in Ephesians 4, andalso in more detail in chapters 12 through 14 in 1 Corinthians. There you'llfind the list and the discussion of Spiritual gifts by the Apostle Paul tothese three churches: The church at Rome, the church at Ephesus and the churchat Corinth.  Rememberthat the church at Corinth was having major divisions over the use and purposeof Spiritual gifts. It is also very important that we understand from 1Corinthians 12 and from this Ephesians 4 passage of Scripture that the HolySpirit gave the gifts for the unity and the building up of the body. One of thebest definitions of a Spiritual gift I have found is that: A Spiritual Gift is aGod-given ability to serve God and other members in the church in such a waythat Christ is glorified and believers are edified. Which means when the giftsare being exercised properly in the Church, they build up the others as theybuild up the body of Christ.  Thisis what Paul really keys in on here in this passage before us. We'll be lookingat these verses the next few days and how we have a wonderful Christ Who hasgiven these gifts because He's “ascended”. The Holy Spirit has beengiven to the church. He is the “gift of the Spirit” (Acts 2:38-39). Youreceive this “Gift” at the moment of your salvation. But then there are the differentgifts of the Spirit that build up the body of Christ. You personally also receiveyour specific particular gifts at the moment of your salvation even though youmight discover them at a later time. This is what we will be studying overthese next few days.  Today,do you know what your Spiritual gifts are? Godbless!

Todaywe are continuing to look at Ephesians 2:18-22. In these verses, we find thatGod's purpose for the church, God's purpose for Jew and Gentile. God's purposefor every human being is to know that you are of tremendous value to God. Itdoesn't matter whether you're a Jew, whether you're a Palestinian, whetheryou're called a Christian, whether you're called a Muslim, Hindu, a Buddhist, aRussian, an American, a Chinese, or any other nationality for that matter. Itdoesn't matter your ethnic background or your racial background. It doesn'tmatter whether you're rich or poor. You are of tremendous value to God.  Everyhuman being was created in the image of God. That means we have personality. That means we can think, we have a will, we have emotions. Every human beinghas all these things because we're created in the image of God. God's plan andpurpose is that we have peace with one another and that we get along with oneanother and that we love one another. The great commandment is to love God withall your heart, soul, and mind. Alongside of this first and great commandmentis the second commandment, which is the proof that we truly love God, that welove our neighbors as ourselves. No matter who our neighbor is.Wehave been created with and for something special. Every human being, no matteryour background and religion, no matter who you are, where you live, whereyou're from, or what you've been taught, you have been created with eternity inyour heart (Ecclesiastes 3:11).  In thelast verses in Ephesians 2, Paul reminds us, “For through Him we both haveaccess by one Spirit to the Father”. Yes, we can have access to the creatorGod and Father of the universe. You can have access to the God, already beingworshiped as “the unknown God” that many are still looking for.  But He can only be found “through”Jesus Christ alone.  Myfriend, only then can you enjoy personal peace and experience unity with thosearound you. Now, therefore, we're no longer strangers or foreigners, butfellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God (v. 19).Verse 20 tells us that this unity is: “built on the foundation of theapostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone.” Paulsaid in 1 Corinthians 3:6:11, “I planted. He says Apollos watered. But Godgave the increase." He then goes on to say, "For no other foundation can anyone laythan that which is laid, which is Christ Jesus."  WhenPaul said, "I laid the foundation," he says earlier in 1Corinthians 2:2, “For I determined not to know anything among you exceptJesus Christ and Him crucified”. Christ is the foundation and He's thechief cornerstone of Psalm 118:22. This is the chief cornerstone which thebuilders rejected and is often referred to in the New Testament as in verse 20.The “cornerstone” binds a building together.  Nowwe are part of His temple, the church of Jesus Christ, the universal church, the church which is His body. Oh, how wonderful to be a part of something sospecial and that's eternal. Nations come and go, institutions come and go, butone thing will last, for eternity, and that is the body of Jesus Christ, Hischurch. Today, you can be a part of His church by placing your faith, not in areligion but in a person, Jesus Christ! A religion didn't die for you! OnlyJesus Christ did! Thatis what this chapter is about. We're separated from God by our sin, but Jesusdied to give us eternal life. We can by faith trust Him and enter into ourunion with Him and with one another today. Would you do that? Would you trustChrist? And then if you know Christ, if you're in Christ, then as a follower ofChrist, tell others.  Today, would you tell someone about this hope, this faith you can have that changesand transforms everything and brings you peace with God and with others.   GodBless!

Paul talks about some definite things that have brought these twogroups together who usually were at odds with one another. In the first versesof this chapter Paul is addressing both the Jews and the Gentiles. Paul tells bothJews and Gentiles that God has made alive those who were dead in trespasses andsins. Remember that a Gentile is anyone who is not born of Jewish descent. Paulreminds them and us how before salvation in Christ we are all dead in ourtrespasses and sins because sin works against us. We're disobedient. We'redepraved, and we're doomed, and we are children of wrath. But God, but God whois rich in His mercy with a great love that He's loved us. And with that loveHe has now brought us salvation and reconciliation and redemption by His graceand through our faith in Christ (vv. 4-9). God has a plan for our life and weare His workmanship, land He has before ordained before the foundation of theworld that we should walk in these wonderful works of God, the good works thatonly He can do through us and let the light of Christ shine out of us andthrough us to a dark world. Nowwe come to verse 11. Here Paul is particularly addressing theGentiles, those who are not of Jewish descent. First, He reminds them, you'recalled uncircumcision by what is called the circumcision (the Jews) made in theflesh by the hand. The Jews look down upon the Gentiles, calling them the uncircumcision. The Gentiles were like dogs in many cases for most of the Jewish people.  Inverse 12 Paul points out that the Gentiles were without Christ being aliensfrom the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenant of promisehaving no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you whowere once a far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. The one wordthat best describes the Gentiles is without. They were “outside” in severalrespects. They were without Christ. They're without citizenship in the nationof Israel without the covenants. The covenants were given to Abraham and to hisseed.  BothJews and Gentiles were without hope. Historians tell us that a great cloud ofhopelessness covered the ancient world. Philosophies were empty; traditionswere disappearing; religions were powerless to help men face either life ordeath. People longed to pierce the veil and get some message of hope from theother side, but there was none (1 Thes. 4:13-18). Theywere without God. The heathen had gods aplenty, as Paul discovered in Athens(Acts 17:16-23). But the pagan, no matter how religious or moral he might have been, did not know the true God. The writer of Psalm 115 contrasted the true God withthe idols of the heathen. Itis worth noting that the spiritual plight of the Gentiles was caused not by Godbut by their own willful sin. Paul said the Gentiles knew the true God butdeliberately refused to honor Him (Rom. 1:18-23). Religious history is not arecord of man starting with many gods (idolatry) and gradually discovering theone true God. Rather, it is the sad story of man knowing the truth about Godand deliberately turning away from it! It is a story of devolution, notevolution! The first eleven chapters of Genesis give the story of the declineof the Gentiles; and from Genesis 12 on (the call of Abraham), it is the storyof the Jews. God separated the Jews from the Gentiles that He might be able tosave the Gentiles also. "Salvation is of the Jews" (John 4:22). Godcalled the Jews, beginning with Abraham, that through them He might revealHimself as the one true God. With the Jews He deposited His Word, and throughthe Jews He gave the world the Savior (Rom. 9:1-5). Israel was to be a light tothe Gentiles that they too might be saved. But sad to say, Israel became likethe Gentiles, and the light burned but dimly. This fact is a warning to thechurch today. When the church is least like the world, it does the most for theworld.

New DEI After 5 episode live nowWe've all heard the terms: psychological safety, belonging, trust. They get tossed around in company town halls, folded into DEI statements, and dropped into leadership training decks. But let's be real — most of what gets said about them barely scratches the surface. In this week's episode of DEI After 5, I go beneath the buzzwords.Psychological safety isn't about being “nice.” It's not just about making people feel good. It's about creating the kind of culture where people aren't punished — directly or indirectly — for being honest, asking questions, making mistakes, or challenging the status quo. It's the fertile ground where belonging and trust actually have a chance to grow. And yet, too often I see organizations trying to build belonging without doing the hard work of fostering safety. Or trying to build trust while still leading with secrecy and control. (Let's talk about those “secret squirrel conversations.”)Here's what I unpack in this episode:* Why psychological safety must come before belonging or trust can take root* How micro-moments — like who gets cut off in meetings or whose ideas get traction — shape the culture more than any policy ever could* What it looks like when psychological safety becomes performative* How leaders can begin to repair trust and model the safety they want their teams to feel* Why ongoing, real-time feedback (not just surveys) mattersIf you're a people leader, a change agent, or just someone who wants to help shape a healthier workplace culture — this episode is for you.We also explore what it means to slow down, assess the health of your team, and ask the right questions about how your people are really doing. Because the truth is, safety doesn't live in the mission statement. It lives in the day-to-day experiences of your team.As always, I'd love to hear what resonates — drop your thoughts in the comments or share how psychological safety is (or isn't) showing up in your workplace.Until next time,~Sacha This is a public episode. Cities Church Sermons

What is the difference between a mission and a vision? Six weeks ago I kicked off our series “We Are Cities Church” by talking all about our mission, and today I'm gonna close the series talking all about our vision — and so what's the difference between those two words? When we talk about mission, we're talking about what we're sent to do.Vision is what it looks like if we get it done.Mission is assignment, vision is success.Mission is action, vision is the result of you fulfilling the action. So, let me connect this to our passage this morning, Revelation 7, verses 9–12.Revelation 7 ConnectionThe whole Book of Revelation is basically all vision (John is describing what he sees in the future, and the purpose is to encourage us). So in Revelation 7, notice what he sees, verse 9:9 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”This is a scene. John has seen this, and we're supposed to see it with him. That's what vision does. Vision is meant to be envisioned. So what are we envisioning here? What do we see? It's a crowd of people from all over the world — every nation, all tribes and peoples and languages are altogether. And what are they doing altogether? They're saying with a loud voice, verse 10:“Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”These people are saying this to the Lamb, before his throne — and the Lamb, of course, is Jesus. So see this: these people are worshipping Jesus along with the heavenly host.Who again are these people? They're people from all nations worshiping Jesus. Revelation 7 is a vision of Jesus-worshipers from all nations. Can you see it?Back to Matthew 28This vision is the result of some action that's been fulfilled. But what action? What assignment must have been done in order for there to be Jesus-worshipers from all nations?Oh, we know this one! Matthew 28:19, the Great Commission: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.”See that's the mission! That's what the church is supposed to do — make disciples of all nations — and when the church is ultimately successful, when the church gets that done (which she will get done!), these disciples of Jesus from all nations will be worshipers of Jesus from all nations forever. The disciple-making mission of Matthew 28 is what leads to the Jesus-worshiping vision of Revelation 7.What you do — mission; what it looks like when it's done — vision. In the ultimate sense, Matthew 28 and Revelation 7 is our church's mission and vision. And it's the mission and vision of every faithful local church. This is non-negotiable. To be a real church means to exist with the mission to make disciples of Jesus for the vision of Jesus being worshiped forever. That's why we're here. And we are here.Applied Here and NowWe live in a particular place and time — we live within a particular culture with it's particular challenges and opportunities. The “first half of the 21st century in the Twin Cities” has its unique provisions and needs, resources and limitations, blessings and burdens. And the question is: How do we apply that non-negotiable mission and vision to when and where we are?Well when it comes to our mission, we've tried to capture that with more details in the form of a statement. What do we mean exactly when we say “make disciples”? We mean that we want to make joyful disciples of Jesus who remember his realness in all of life. And that word “disciple” includes a four-fold calling:We are Jesus worshipersWe are joyful servantsWe are generous disciplersWe are welcoming witnessesThese are the kind of disciples we want to be and make. This is our mission. And when it comes to our vision — that Jesus is worshiped forever — how does that look now? How does that future reality get reflected here? That's what I want to tell you in this sermon. With the Book of Revelation as our ultimate vision, I want to show you five facts about our vision here. And these facts are not part of a statement — I don't expect you to memorize these things — but I'm trying to paint a picture for you. This is what it would look like if we are effective in making joyful disciples of Jesus who remember his realness in all of life.1. We are a healthy, vibrant church entranced by God as our all-satisfying joy. Again, this is something you have to imagine. We're talking about a vibe here. And the vibe is that we are a happy people. It's something that you just feel in the air when you're here and you're around us. We have joy — and it's not joy in our circumstances, because those are changing everyday — but we have joy down deep in our souls because God loves us. And we know God loves us because he has proven it to us — it's that when we were still sinners, dead in our sins and undeserving of anything good, Jesus Christ died for us. Jesus took the punishment for our sins! Jesus removed all of our guilt and shame! And on the third day, he was raised from the dead. Jesus has secured our eternal life and freedom in him. He has given us his Spirit as our Helper, to guide us in his truth. Jesus has drawn us into the joyous fellowship that he has had with the Father before the foundations of the world. We are now “in on” the divine smile that is behind everything. And do you know what that means? It means that we can smile here.Hey, it's gonna be okay. We are the richest people in the world! Did you know that even the hard things in your life are being used by God for your ultimate good? Look, there's not a hair that falls from your head without the will of your Father in heaven, in fact, all things must work together for your salvation! God sees you and knows you and loves you, and he wants you to know that he loves you. Because the more you are assured of his love for you (and how much you don't deserve it), then the more you're gonna be humbled and filled with joy, and then the more you're gonna be poured out in love, and this all amounts to magnifying the glory of God. And that's the point! The purpose behind it all is that God's glory be magnified in our being satisfied in all that he is for us in Jesus. We're a happy people because we have God — “Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy!” (Psalm 43:4)Can you see it? We are a healthy, vibrant church entranced by God as our all-satisfying joy. Also …2. We are deepening our knowledge of God for a life of faithful discipleship and gospel advance. We're a people happy in God, and we're a people who seek him.“4 Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. 5 Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation … (Psalm 25:4–5).We want to know God and the ways of God, because our faith is according to knowledge. The more we know about God, the more we can trust him. This is why Jesus says that making disciples means that we teach one another all that he has commanded us. We're supposed to learn together how to follow Jesus. So get this: we don't learn to get fat heads. The end-goal is not what you know, but it's who you are becoming, shaped by who you know. Christ clear for Christlikeness. We will be a well-taught church, able to discern truth from error, not tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of human doctrine, but we're gonna speak the truth in love and we are gonna be transformed (see Ephesians 4:14–16). We are a truth-telling outpost that serves as a refuge from the world of lies that surrounds us, but even more than that, we are a church that lives in the wonder of who God is. Yes, we will defend God's truth, but first we are amazed by God's truth! This is what The Cities Institute is trying to do.It's a recovery project to bring back the primacy of teaching in the local church, because that is the church's history. In the earliest days of the church, people were coming to Christ from all kinds of different religious backgrounds. That's what mission to the Gentile world meant. You had all the pagans who were getting saved and they had no Bible background. And so the church realized: if we don't teach these people sound theology, they're gonna mix some stuff up and eventually it's going to ruin our witness, so the early church had a “teach or die” mindset. They were just listening to Jesus, because Jesus said to teach. That's part of what discipleship is. So that's what we're going to do. We're going to seek to know God, to be amazed by him and transformed by him, to faithfully follow Jesus and be his witnesses.Do you see it? We are deepening our knowledge of God for a life of faithful discipleship and gospel advance. 3. We are actively organizing our lives to share our joy in Jesus with others. One of the great things about church planting is that sharing the gospel is on the front-burner of how you live. Every encounter with other people could turn into a spiritual conversation. You know God ordains divine appointments, and so you're just looking for them. I remember when we first moved into our current neighborhood. It was 12 years ago — Elizabeth was five. Melissa and I taught her that the reason we lived where we did was to tell our neighbors about God. I remember Elizabeth actually told our neighbors that. Not kidding. People would be out walking their dog out in front of our house and Elizabeth would be like “Hey, we're here to tell you about God.” And it was true! And all of us thought that way. But here's the thing: we're all just so busy now. There's so much going on, and over time, sharing Jesus is not on the front-burner, but it gets moved to the back, over to the side, and before you know it, you're just running through the motions like every other lost person in these cities. I'm not saying don't be involved in stuff — be involved, plug in, be active, but do it as a Christian. Everywhere we go we are a welcoming witness to Jesus Christ. We are opening wide our arms to make Jesus known, which means we want to double our joy. I remember a story years ago that Pastor John Piper told about his dad. His dad was a passionate evangelist who had been in ministry for decades, and one day, toward the end of his life, Pastor John asked him, “What the key to your joy?” How have you remained so happy for so long? And his dad said: “soul winning.” Leading other people to Jesus.See, when you're happy in Jesus, you wanna share that happiness with others, and when you do, your happiness doubles and deepens. It's like a fountain that just keeps overflowing. We say to God, Psalm 4:7, “You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound!”And that's never gonna satisfy them, I want them to have this joy that I have in you! That's the prayer we take everywhere we go. That's what we're looking to do … in our neighborhoods, and in our work relationships, and at those school events, and through all those youth sports — we want to share Jesus. We want more people to be happy in God. And they will be.Through our witness, more and more people will trust in Jesus and be baptized. Because baptism is that symbol. Jesus gave us baptism as the way to declare that we are alive in him. And right now we have baptisms three or four times a year, but what if we had baptisms 12 times a year? What if so many people start coming to Christ through our witness that we start having “Baptism Sundays” every month! Can you see it? — we are actively organizing our lives to share our joy in Jesus with others. Also…4. We are deliberate to invest in the faith of future generations. We believe children matter. All children matter: pre-born children, little children, growing children. Children matter and families matter. And we all believe this whether we're unmarried or married, have a house full of kids or no kids at all, whether we're empty-nesters or newly-weds — we all share this conviction because of the Bible. And when we think about where we're headed as a church, I don't know if there's anything more important to remember than this: At some point, we're going to be handing the torch to our children. And we need to be preparing for that hand-off now. This is a new way of thinking for us compared to how we thought ten years ago when we first planted this church. When you're planting a church, you're just trying to get off the ground. You're starting something brand-new and that takes a lot of attention, and so we poured a lot into that, and we also had kids so we did ask: “Hey, what do we do with the kids?” But see, that's not the question we're asking anymore. In those early years, we were trying to build something, and we thought What about our children? — but now we're trying to build something for our children. Does that make sense? We're better now at thinking more long-term. And that's certainly the case with this steeple project. What we've done here is no “flash in the pan” restoration, but we've done it the way we have for our children's children. That's the way we're thinking now. We're building something for future generations. We're investing in the faith of those who will come after us.And this is something that comes naturally to women as cultivators and nurturers, but now this is something our men must think more about as builders. I just had a conversation last week with a few of our men in their thirties; they're all business leaders who've been transformed by Jesus; and they want to use their skills and expertise to start companies and create jobs and to build a legacy of generosity. See, it's thinking big picture. Long-term. I heard a story years ago about the Reformer Martin Luther, and I can't actually verify that this conversation really happened, but supposedly, somewhere at some point, Luther was out walking with some of his students one day, it was a beautiful fall day like today, and little Hans spoke up and said, “Herr Doktor, if you knew that the world would go to pieces tomorrow, what would you do today?”And Luther looked at him with a smile and said, “I would plant an apple tree.”His point was that he would do something most of which would not immediately, directly benefit himself — he wouldn't sit under the shade of that tree and he wouldn't eat any of its apples — but those who come after him would. And that's how we're thinking now. Can you see it? — we are deliberate to invest in the faith of future generations. And speaking of planting, fifth and final:5. We are a healthy, vibrant church with a high priority and capacity to multiply more churches in the Twin Cities who are entranced by God as our all-satisfying joy. In other words, we are a church who plants more churches like ours here.Since the very beginning, this has been the way we talk about vision. We want to multiply people, multiply Community Groups, multiply churches. And overall, to date, we've sent out six church planting couples to start new work, and countless couples to support new work. And I miss these people. Our budget misses these people. But we believe in Spirit-led sending — it's a value of ours — and we want to do more of it. Wherever you wanna go in the name of Jesus, we're gonna get behind you!And when it comes to our vision for here and now, it's to plant more churches in the Twin Cities metro, and there are a few reasons why:1. Growth leads to spreading. We learn this from nature. As an oak tree grows and matures and is healthy, it produces more oak trees. There comes a point when that oak tree itself is not going to get any higher and wider — it's solid and full and maxed — but it's got these acorns, and that's what will make the one tree become two and three and four — this is where forests come from. And that's the way we see it here. We're gonna use every square inch of this building for our church — and we do have some room, and we will make some room — but we want to see God work in the lives of more people than we can fit in here. So we're gonna multiply this and do it more places than just here. We've been planted, rooted, and now we're branching out.2. Spreading (or multiplication) makes a bigger impact than centralization. One strategy might be to move this whole thing to a third-ring suburb, get a smoke machine, and try to triple our size. See, this is the thinking: let's just make this bigger, whatever it takes (it's centralization). But that's not the long-term thinking. Multiplication, not centralization, makes a bigger impact for a longer period of time. We want Jesus to be impossible to ignore in the Twin Cities. If you come to these cities, we want it to be Jesus in your face. And you may not believe him — like our state government right now you may reject him — but you will not be able to ignore him, and you will recognize that these cities are saturated with churches of men and women and boys and girls who believe and live like Jesus is real. Multiplication.3. Planting reminds us that this whole thing is so much bigger than us.This vision to plant more churches in the Twin Cities is both impossible and possible at different levels. At the level of impossibility, it's just us. I don't know about you, but every morning I wake up I'm just happy to be here for another day. I made it for another one! That's a lot of us, right? We're just trying to survive — I'm just trying to get my kids to school on time and not forget that they have to be picked up — and here I am talking about starting a multiplying church planting movement that aims to make more people happy in Jesus forever — it feels impossible, at one level. But then at another level, we remember God, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence things that do no exist, and he is often pleased to bring his people to places where he must be who he says he is. …It is possible with God that he put it in the heart of a man and his wife to lead a new church plant, and then that he'd put it in the hearts of others who would plant with them. It is possible that they could build a team of 20-30 people who would want to branch out and be a new church. God could do that — God could do it once, twice, six times, fifty times — north, south, east, west — and before you know it, there is a movement of churches everywhere you look in these cities entranced by God as our all-satisfying joy. Can you see it? Impossible, and possible — and certainly way bigger than us. That's where I want to live. Don't you? If we're going to multiply, we need God to be God!That's our vision, church — but remember it's our vision here and now, until Jesus comes back. We can't forget the ultimate vision.Longing for New JerusalemThere may be just a few of you in here who were there on December 14, 2014. We were less than a month away from officially becoming a church, right at the starting line, and we had a meeting in the cafeteria at Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis. And I gave a short message about our vision and I want to read to you what I said. Here are the exact words from December 14, 2014:Church plants can be high-adrenaline work. Many of us have been meeting since August, others since March, and some have been dreaming of this thing for five years, and we are getting close. I mean, this event right now [in the cafeteria] is a testimony to God's faithfulness to us, to his blessing on this vision and this church and what we want to do in the Twin Cities for his name. And with all this waiting and anticipation, with Cities Church just about to get off the ground, let me remind us (me!), that we have not arrived. That is the temptation, you know. As God blesses this thing, and we pray he does, there is going to be this subtle thing that happens where we want to start patting our ourselves on the back. We're going to feel like we've made it! Here we are! This is the dream! But no, it's not. Because, you see, our goal — our ultimate goal — is not a new church plant, but a new Jerusalem.Amen to that ten years later. And may we say that ten more years from now, and ten more years from then — and if Jesus hasn't come back yet, may our children's children say that! Because what we most want to see…a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”Jesus-worshipers from all nations. That is where we're headed, Cities Church. That is what we want. And that's what brings us to the Table. The TableHere at this Table we remember the death of Jesus for us, and we give him thanks. We come to this table to rest in him and to worship him together. And because of what this table means, it's only for those who trust in Jesus. If you're a Christian, we invite you eat and drink with us. But if you've not yet trusted in Jesus, let the elements pass, but look: you can become a Christian this morning, if you just put your faith in Jesus. Right now, turn from your sin, and ask Jesus to save you.

There are persons all over the world declaring, “The Presence goes before me,” and It does not do a single thing for them. No, no, the Presence does not go before you just because you declare some words, nor is God consciously present with you just because you declare It.God is an experience. God must be experienced, and we experience God through our meditation. I am not saying meditation is the only way to have the experience. There are people on earth who have never meditated who have a conscious awareness of the presence of God all the time. But those who have not had the experience of the presence of God have not lived, and if they have not experienced the presence of God, it is because they have not specifically known the truth and then gone to the source where God is to be found.Do you understand now what I mean when I point out there must be discipline and a declaration or statement of truth, a realization of truth, and yet, in the same breath, I say that when you get to the point of prayer or treatment, you do not need words or thoughts? He is the hidden formula of life. But He won't reveal Himself to you. You won't feel Him unless you call Him. Prayer is the invitation. You must invoke Him through prayer and meditation. Chanting, singing and repeating the mantra are invitations, asking God to reveal Himself.”-Amma "The Presence does go before you, and It “makes the crooked places straight”—if you have the conscious awareness of the Presence. Let this be clear to you. Do not hesitate about it, because it is very important."-Joel S. Goldsmith: The Only Freedom.
