In Verse 104, of the Vijñāna-Bhairava Tantra, we come across a profound teaching:विहाय निजदेहस्थं सर्वत्रास्मीति भावयन्।दृढेन मनसा दृष्ट्या नान्येक्षिण्या सुखी भवेत्॥ १०४॥vihāya nijadehasthaṁ sarvatrāsmīti bhāvayan |dṛḍhena manasā dṛṣṭyā nānyekṣiṇyā sukhī bhavet || 104 ||"By abandoning the sense that the self abides only in one's own body, and by contemplating with a firm mind that “I am everywhere”, without any other kind of seeing (through a-paroksha-anubhūti, direct mystic experience), one becomes happy (i.e enlightened)!"I felt that this verse captured the very essence of spiritual life and spelled out the whole journey from start to finish which is a journey from limitation to absolute freedom, from jīva (limited individuality) to śīva (all inclusive one-ness), from selfishness to selflessness. We explore this idea using the Tantrik & Hatha Yoga languaging around Kula Kundalinī, our own power of identification and how she moves from the mūlādhāra (where she identifies only with the limited mind-body complex) to the sahasrāra (where she unites with śiva in super-sensuous bliss!) through the various chakras in the sushumnā nādi. I was especially moved by emphasis on direct, immediate spiritual experience (aparokshanubhūti) as the necessary condition of realization that appears in the second half of the verse! As Swami Vivekananda defined it, "religion is realization", not frothy talk or belief! This is indeed the goal, but how do we get there? This verse not only tells us the mechanism of spiritual life, and the final outcome but also presents the means: dṛḍhena manasā , through unrelenting, firm, consistent and constant practice! We talk about what practice really means and discuss the role of grace and make a case for the importance of prayer, which Sri Ramakrishna very much emphasized. Recently we've been giving a series of talks on some foundational Tantrik concepts starting with the concept of the "self". Is there such a thing and if so, what is its nature? We asked What is the Self in Tantra? and then we looked at the The 6 Layers of the Self in Tantra of the virūpāska-pancāśika, a foundational Tantrik model for nested embodiment. Now, we continue the discussion, recapping some of the stuff we uncovered in those previous classes and concluding with a verse from the Vijñāna-Bhairava Tantra:चिद्धर्मा सर्वदेहेषु विशेषो नास्ति कुत्रचित्।अतश्च तन्मयं सर्वम् भावयन् भवजिज् जनः॥ १००॥ciddharmā sarvadeheṣu viśeṣo nāsti kutracit|ataśca tanmayaṁ sarvam bhāvayan bhavajij janaḥ || 100 ||“There is [One Reality] whose essential nature is Consciousness and this is in every body; there is no special consciousness anywhere!” And thus, a person who contemplates that the entire world is pervaded [by that Reality, consciousness] conquers the world!"Lectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrMSupport the show
This is perhaps one of my favorite lectures yet and one of the most foundational. In this talk, we track the idea of the "self", the most immediate reality through various different schools of philosophy: first we sketch out scientific materialism (physicalism) and use the ancient ideas of Sāmkhya philosophy to refute it. Then, we refute Sāmkhya before moving on to sketch out the Buddhist idea of no-self. Having refuted the Buddhists, we then sketch out the Shaiva Siddhānta (Tantrik Dualism) view on the Self which we then develop into the non-dual Tantrik view of the One Consciousness in all beings as all beings. 00:00:00 Opening Invocations00:00:47 5 Forms of the Self 00:08:24 The Buddhist Idea of "No Self" 00:10:41 The Vijñāna-Bhairava Tantra on the Self00:15:30 The Self in Sāmkhya vs the Self in Materialism00:42:00 An Argument Against Sāmkhya: There is Only One Consciousness00:52:38 The Buddhist Idea of No-Self 00:59:43 Refuting the Buddhist View of No-Self01:05:30 The Self in Shaiva Siddhanta, Tantrik Dualism01:19:45 The Non-Dual Tantrik Idea of the One SelfYou'll find a complete playlist of lectures on Tantra in both theory and practice here.Lectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrMJai Mā!Support the show
Why yoga? Anyone who has practiced for a decade, two decades, or even a lifetime knows that the answer to this question is anything but simple—or perhaps so simple that words fail to capture it. Some truths can only be understood through embodied knowledge, a form of wisdom that arises not from intellectual effort but from deep receptivity. Yoga is a path of insight, not just the accumulation of facts or information, though it does not reject them. It is a path of Vijñāna—a deeper knowing, an awakened consciousness, a means of direct realization. There are realms beyond what the mind can grasp, mysteries that logic cannot solve. But what the mind cannot know, the spirit can perceive, and the soul can experience. This is why lifelong practitioners return to their mats, day after day, year after year. All who have touched this special knowledge—not of the intellect, but of the soul—are called them back, again and again, to what was once glimpsed in moments of deep practice. In past week, Vij has spoken against his own govt 4 times. Last Friday, he took a direct dig at Saini, saying that ever since he had become CM he'd been flying in an ‘udan khatola'.
We gave this lecture some time ago, in July of last year on Swami Lakshmanjoo's birthday. However it occurred to me that it would be a very good start to 2025 if we could not only review the fundamentals of spiritual life in general but also revisit the foundations, historical, philosophical and spiritual the underlie our Tantrik tradition. Note: around 14:00 I mention a lecture I did called "Texts and Lineages in Kashmir Shaivism". I never actually got around to uploading that one but if you stay tuned for the video called "Our Tantrik Lineage", I go over the same material with albeit more detail. Anyway, in this talk, we make a few points about Tantra and texts like the Vijñāna-Bhairava Tantra and then plunge into what I consider, on perhaps a more anecdotal note, to the be the essential flavor of Shaivism and how it developed throughout history. Giving in to our desires (which is to say: following them into externalized action) can sometimes be just as repressive as avoiding them altogether. In either case, the energy of desire is not fully experienced:; it is instead dissipated through repression or expression. One wonders: what would it be like to simply sit with the energy of agitation or inspiration, breathing into it and following it back into its point of origin? In the Vijñāna-Bhairava Tantra, there is a very subtle technique that falls into the category of "Śambhavopaya", the Way of Śīva because it is a practice centered on icchā, the creative desire of Non-Dual Consciousness to bloom outward into expression. The source of all expression is Consciousness and it is back into Consciousness that all expressions dissolve. As such, any urge, inspiration or desire that we experience has its origin point and resting point in Awareness. By experiencing fully the blooming of any icchā, creative outpouring we can "guide it" to a still point and thereby experience enlivened Awareness! We took a first pass at this practice here but because we didn't have as much time as I would have liked to discuss it, we decided to revisit it in this short discussion before we took up a Hatha Yoga practice, which you can watch here. Our Vijñāna-Bhairava Tantra series:https://www.patreon.com/collection/143200Classes meet live every Thursday at 6:30pm PST. Time to ask a very important question: what does Mā really want? Last week, we started discussing themes of sensuality and desire in Ma Kali's iconography alongside the equally controversial motifs of intoxication and madness. We introduced the concept of “yamala”, the sexual union of Shiva and Shakti! You can watch that lecture here: But besides sketching out a few practices from the Vijñāna-Bhairava and reading a few sections from the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna that address sexuality and spirituality, we didn't really a get a chance to do a theological and philosophical treatment of the concept, especially with regards to a serious question: if God has desires, can She still be God? After all, isn't God whole and complete and perfect and doesn't desire imply some kind of lack or incompleteness or imperfection? Is there a different between "desiring FROM fullness" as opposed "desiring TO fullness?" And if she does have desires, what are they? And why are they often described in erotic terms? Ah, so much to explore! May all this be an offering. PS:This is the fourth lecture in the series on Mā's bhāva following the “Why is Kali drunk?” https://youtu.be/OAOxpwtjmtA?si=CzXDMdBfpY96_kHo and “Why is Kali Crazy”https://youtu.be/zXvggDB4fLQ?si=ZDjvOu2z1oAmcEVD lectures! For the auspicious occasion of the Kāla Bhairava Jayanti which also happens to be Mā Siddheśvarī Jayanti, we offer a rather free and somewhat loose translation of the Kāla Bhairavashtakam, the 8 Verses Praising Bhairava attributed to Sri Shankaracharya to explore some of the non-dual implications of certain phrases in the hymn. We make a few observations of Rāga Bhairava and how this hymn is connected to Mahishasura Mardini and also to Ravana, the famed antagonist of the Ramayana. We make some passing remarks about Abhinava Gupta's Bhairava Stava and also Kshemarāja's verse to Bhairava in his commentary on the Vijñāna-Bhairava Tantra. But most importantly, we talk about what it means to "pray". All prayer, all approaches to God are wonderful and valid, suiting different devotees of different temperaments who are all equally great! Having said that, I make a case for "self-less prayer" that cares for neither worldly nor even spiritual reward which I argue, can be accomplished through chanting hymns like the Kālabhairavāshtakam with fervor! Here's the hymn:कालभैरवाष्टकम्To him whose holy feet is worshipped by the king of the GodsWho wears a serpent as a sacrificial thread and who is adorned with the crescent moon, who is the giver of graceWho is praised by a retinue of yogis and sages like NāradaTo Him who is the Supreme Lord of the city of Kāshi, I offer my praise! To Him who is resplendent with the radiance of innumerable suns! Who is transcendent and who rescues us from the ocean of worldliness!Whose throat is blue and who is quick grant all wishes!Who is imperishable, the Death of Death with lotus eyes who upholds the three worlds with His trident! To Him who is the Supreme Lord of the city of Kāshi, I offer my praise! To Him who holds in His hands the trident, axe, noose and club! Who is the Primordial Cause of the Universe!Who is the imperishable void that is prior to all the Gods! Who is the Terrifying Lord who delights in the strange Tandava dance! To Him who is the Supreme Lord of the city of Kāshi, I offer my praise! To Him who gives both worldly happiness and final liberation! Whose form is most auspicious!Who loves his devotees! Who is the immovable Lord of the Worlds!Who is adorned with shining jingling golden bells around his waist! To Him who is the Supreme Lord of the city of Kāshi, I offer my praise! To Him who protects the bridge of Dharma and destroys the path of Adharma, Who destroys the fetters of Karma! Whose limbs are adorned with circles of golden serpents! To Him who is the Supreme Lord of the city of Kāshi, I offer my praise! To Him whose two feet are adorned with sandals studded with shining gemsWho is eternal, non-dual, who is the stainless and pure essence of all divinity!Who humbles death and liberates us! Who has terrifying fangs! To Him who is the Supreme Lord of the city of Kāshi, I offer my praise! To Him whose terrible laughter destroys the universe emanation forth from Brahma!Whose terrible glance rends asunder the net of illusion! Who bestows the eight occult powers, Who is garlanded in skulls! To Him who is the Supreme Lord of the city of Kāshi, I offer my praise! To Him who is the Lord of Ghosts! Who bestows great glory! Who frees all the residents of Kāshi from karmas good and bad!Who is the Lord of the Universe, the Ancient One and in the innermost guide in every being! To Him who is the Supreme Lord of the city of Kāshi, I offer my praise!Support the show
After we did our class on how to worship Bhairava (which you can watch here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/secret-mantras-8-116490016?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link) we hopped into this inspired discussion about the deeper meaning of the word "Bhairava" in the context of the subtlest non-dual Tantrik teaching. Then, after exploring a few nuances in the name itself, we then review a profound practice that Bhairava reveals secretly in the Vijñāna-Bhairava, a practice that we are all of us quite familiar with by now but that we can hopefully take up again with fresh perspective as a result of this evening's discussion! ūrdhve prāṇo hy adho jīvo visargātmā paroccaret |utpatti-dvitaya-sthāne bharaṇād bharitā sthitiḥ: || 24 ||Bhairava said:Goddess Parā (Vāk, the Transcendent-Immanent Goddess) expresses Herself in a visarga as (the transcendence) of exhaling upwards (into spacious dissolution) and (the immanence) of inhaling downwards (into embodiment). In our latest episode, we explore the intricate relationship between energy centers within our bodies and their interplay between the masculine and feminine aspects. We delve into the concept of the central channel, the Sashumna Nadi, and the Ida and Pingala that traverse the left and right sides of our being, respectively. This discussion illuminates how these energies, much like threads in a rope, weave together to create the strength and form of our existence. We take time to appreciate the thousands of muscles and neural pathways that define us, emphasizing the extraordinary nature of our bodies. The episode also features readings from the Radiance Sutras, a translation of the Vijñāna-Bhairava-tantra, capturing the spiritual dialogue between a goddess and her lover, which speaks to the mysteries of life and existence. These passages invite listeners to tune into the presence of life's power and the mysterious awareness that permeates everything. The text encourages us to explore the wholeness beyond individual parts, and the interplay of form and formlessness, urging us to rest in the embrace of wisdom and truth.Listeners are guided to take a moment to recognize their own unique existence and power, acknowledging the stories, failures, and wisdom that make up their current being. The episode reinforces the idea that each person's presence is not accidental but a unique manifestation of life's vitality. This recognition is aimed at catalyzing self-awareness and inspiring listeners to weave love into their lives and surroundings. The session concludes with a meditation centering on the affirmation of life's purpose and the essential nature of love. Listeners are encouraged to view their physical form not as a burden, but as a vessel for manifesting strength, power, and love. The meditation serves as a reminder that everyone has come to this life with significant intent and potential. The closing thoughts of the episode revisit the themes of power and vulnerability, discussing how confronting fear with presence and consciousness can lead us to embody our true nature. The episode underscores the importance of embodying love and authenticity in our daily lives, especially in a world where superficial conversations often overshadow genuine actions. Ultimately, the podcast invites listeners to play in the field of power and love, embracing their authentic selves and fostering a more aligned and vibrant existence for themselves and others.

Today's episode is a conversation, and I'm speaking with the renowned teacher Rupert Spira. Rupert has been a spiritual practitioner since the age of 15. He began with Advaita Vedānta, as well as Sufi teachings, but the pivotal turning point in his spiritual life was meeting Francis Lucille, who introduced him to the Direct Path teachings of Ātmānanda Krishna Menon and the teachings of Tantric Shaivism, which Francis had received from his teacher, Jean Klein. Rupert is the author of You Are the Happiness You Seek and many other short books. He lives in Oxford, where I was fortunate to meet with him face to face, although the conversation you'll hear today was recorded remotely. Rupert holds regular meetings in the UK, US and Italy, as well as online webinars and Retreats at Home. I personally find his long-form guided meditations to be amongst the most powerful and well-crafted guided meditations available anywhere, especially those in his audio download called Transparent Body, Luminous World, which is inspired (in part) by the Vijñāna-bhairava-tantra. (During the recording of this episode we experienced some audio issues. Kindly bear with us as we learn the art of podcasting. We've already made significant improvements for subsequent episodes.) En este episodio vamos a practicar el verso 46 del Vijñana Bhairava Tantra, una practica directa al estado de Bhairava. ¡Agárrense!

The Vijñānabhairava Tantra is a compendium of spiritual prompts to enter a state of complete absorption in the Absolute, while yet remaining with the power of creativity and fecundity. If any text could be synonymous with Methods of Contemplation, it's this one. In the text, the primordial Goddess Bhairavi asks Bhairava, who is none other than her very Self - how to untangle the myriad of paths and admonitions of the tantras. He responds by giving pointed instructions to winnow away the extroversion of the mind: complex ones, simple ones, ones you might already do. The point being - Reality itself is the door to Reality. Growing up, celebrated chef and entrepreneur Vikram Vij wanted to be an actor, but his business-minded father had other ideas. At nineteen, Vij left India for Austria, where he studied hotel management, and landed his first restaurant job at the famed Michelin-starred Post-Stuben restaurant. It was there that a chance encounter with the head of CP Hotels led to a job offer at the Banff Springs Hotel. And so began Vikram Vij's life in his adopted country of Canada. “I fell in love with Canada. I fell in love with Banff. And I always tell people I come from one of the largest democracies in the world called India, but I actually live in the best democracy in the world called Canada,” Vij says. From Banff, it was on to Vancouver, where Vij would build a network of restaurants with his former wife and business partner Meeru Dhalwala, and satisfy the entertainer in his soul with appearances on shows like Dragons' Den, Top Chef Canada and Recipe to Riches. The pause between the breath gives us an anchor of stillness amidst the constant fluctuations of mind and karma. Because the breath is as ceaseless as manifestation is infinite— and flowing with our breath, like flowing with our karma, takes practice and surrender. This is why the pause between the breath is such a resource helping us find and unite with this flow. The pause between the breath isn't separate from the breath, but it is what unites the inhale and exhale into a fluid experience. The Shiva Sutras describe this as a type of “Triple Awareness”, awareness that goes beyond just the inhale and exhale, beyond duality, and encompasses the in-between space. “When you fix your awareness not only in two, but in three, you are carried to God consciousness and you become one with Svacchanda.32 (Svacchanda Tantra) What is the meaning of “triple awareness”? The verse tells us there must be triple awareness, not just awareness of two. Awareness of two is the awareness of two actions, such as inhaling and exhaling. Triple awareness includes the junction, the gap, between any two actions, between inhaling and exhaling and between exhaling and inhaling. It is the junction between one step and another step, between one thought and another thought, between one sensation and another sensation, etc. When you are aware of the three centers, then you are carried to Svacchanda, to God-consciousness.” Feeling the space between the breath is actually a means of feeling the breath itself— because triple awareness doens't mean awareness of three, it means awareness of one. Duality is awareness of two, of inhale and exhale as separate, of like and dislike, accepting and rejecting. Non-duality posits a third option, that of surrender— this is what allows us to feel the breath as a flow, instead of just separate parts. The reason it is called ‘triple awareness' is because this experience of surrender always exists within the realm of duality—duality is what we are surrendering in order to feel unity. So the pause between our breaths isn't a separate practice, but a deeper practice, of breath awareness. The pause, though, is elusive. If you think of our breath as a swinging pendulum, inhaling as it swings one way, exhaling as it swings the other way— the still point is almost mathematically impossible to calculate. This is because as the pendulum swings to one side, its distance towards that end point keeps getting exponentially smaller— Like slicing a cake in half, then fourths, then eighths, then sixteenths, then thirty-seconds, and so on— when will the cake slices become so small they disappear? When does the inhale become the exhale? Math and the mind can't tell us exactly, but of course with a little practice we can all experience it for ourself. Meditation lets us directly experience a reality that our mind simply can't comprehend. To support our path to the pause between the breath, this triple awareness that yields an experience of one-ness and unity, we are taught to watch the breath turn, to watch it taper down and taper up around this infinitely small yet existent pause. In this way we allow the pause to arrive within us, which is the only way to fully experience it. On our meditation cushion this would look like watching the exhale dissolve into stillness, and then watching the inhale spring up from that same stillness. Then watching the inhale almost levitate into a pause, and then the exhale rains down like a fine mist. When we pay attention to the tapering edges of our breath, the pause comes to us vibrantly. In our daily life this is possible too, as each experience of our day has a creation, maintenance and dissolution phase. In Sanskrit the dissolving phase is called a Nimesha, and the arising phase is called an Unmesha. When we watch the tapering edges of a situation beginning or ending, we naturally become more present during the activity, and the space between the activities. We do this for kids all the time, telling them that we'll be leaving the playground in 10 minutes, then five minutes, then another five minutes, then ‘this is the last thing', then another ‘last thing', then the playground is dissolved fully as we drive home. It's not easy for kids and its not easy for us, but its not only possible, but essential for our health, consciousness and bliss. We unconsciously relate to the space between breaths and events in our life as a void, which makes it sound empty, but when that void is described by lineage texts and teachings it is anything but, which is why the Vijnana bhairava teaches that “This [liminal] state, which is absolutely pure and filled with universal consciousness, fills the whole universe with bliss. (Vijñānabhairava Tantra 15)”Further, when we can maintain our awareness on the two ‘voids', there is an ‘upsurge' of energy in our Shushumna, which then causes 'the formation of Bhairava [to be] revealed', meaning that awareness of this liminal space causes a rise in spiritual energy and an awareness of our true nature. Paul Reps once wrote that when we pause we overflow like a well from within— which is a vivid description of this ancient process. So we see that the space between our breaths and our activities is not empty, it is actually the potential energy into which the entire universe both dissolves and from which it rises.

Baton Rouge may be no Silicon Valley, heck it may not not even be the "Silicon Bayou" that we were hyped in the early 2000s by the tech park and economic development folks. That said, there are nonetheless some amazingly impressive companies here that are creating tech products and performing IT services in ways that are not being done anywhere else. These are not attention-grabbing cool startups with a catchy marketing hook solving some or other issue like laundry and parking (though we have those too). They're companies dealing in real-world commodities – businesses that have grown from the ground up and proven themselves so successful that they've been acquired by larger companies or private equity firms. Mo Vij is founder and owner of 365 Labs, a tech company that builds software and processes for public safety departments, courts, prosecutors, and first responders. Mo founded the company in January of 2021, using his @Highland campus as its headquarters. The company is funded by Vij Capital, a private equity firm Vij founded in 2019 to fund technology firms. In the years since its founding, 365 Labs has revamped law enforcement systems for agencies around the country, changing the way police process records, how courts handle warrants, and how law enforcement issues tickets. Mo is no stranger to the tech world, or to this show. You may remember he was a guest several years ago, when we talked about his company General Infomatics, which he founded in 2004. In 2020 Mo sold a majority share of that company to a private equity firm based in California. General Infomatics continues to work out of the @Highland campus next to 365 Labs, and that neighborliness is not coincidental, the companies continue to work together. Dianna Liu is founder and CEO of Arix Technologies, an IT company that creates robotics software - which is the fancy way of saying they build robots. The robotic systems Arix creates perform inspections for the petrochemical industry. For example, they make a robot that checks for corrosion on the inside of pipes and others that monitor the safety conditions of componentry in chemical plants and refineries, which can be difficult and dangerous for humans but not so hard for robotic systems. Dianna founded the company in 2017, after spending several years with Exxon Mobil. She got her MBA from Yale after getting her bachelors in mechanical engineering from Duke University. Wie is Peter? Peter Vermeiren is ademcoach. It's an issue that's estimated to cost Canada more than $21 billion per year -- nevermind the environmental impacts. But how much thought have you really given to the problem of food waste and spoilage, and how it could be hampering our country's effort to reduce emissions? Whenever wasted or spoiled food ends up buried in a landfill instead of decomposing while exposed to air, it generates methane — a potent greenhouse gas with 86 times the warming power of carbon dioxide. And it just so happens that Canada is one of the worst countries on the planet when it comes to wasted food. So what can be done about it?On this episode of Disruptors, an RBC podcast, co-hosts John Stackhouse and Trinh Theresa Do wrap up their special, three-part series called “The Growing Challenge”, with an in-depth examination of how both food waste and spoilage represent a huge and often overlooked obstacle to our nation's sustainability efforts. They'll also discuss new technologies and tactics helping food producers to address the issue — as well as how we as consumers all need to change our attitudes when it comes to things like best before dates, portion sizes, and so-called “rescued food.” In addition to some familiar voices from earlier episodes in the series like Sonya Hoo, Evan Fraser, and Kristjan Hebert, John and Theresa will also hear from Meeru Dhalwala, author, chef, and the co-owner of Vij's and Rangoli restaurants in Vancouver; Randy Huffman, the Chief Food Safety and Sustainability Officer at Maple Leaf Foods; Kevin Groh, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Loblaw Companies Limited; as well as Jeremy Lang, the founder and Vice-President of Sustainability at Pela Earth, which makes a smart, countertop-based composting system called Lomi. To learn more about Meeru Dhalwala you can visit her Wikipedia page or follow her on Instagram at @meerudhalwala. Maple Leaf Foods has much more information about its sustainability goals on its website. Loblaw Companies Limited has details on its efforts to reduce waste in both the textiles and food industries.

Shiva Sutra 3.21: magnaḥ svacittena praviśet // “The yogī who is merged in his self must enter completely with his mind filled with great awareness.”Quick Review We learned from the last sutra that the three states of waking, dreaming and deep sleep are like a sword that we use to cut through and carve out our reality. In between our swash buckling, we place the sword in its sheath, and have the opportunity to experience a different state of being, described as the Turya State. This state, where the sword of the mind rests in the sheath of the heart, is like an oil made of nectar, that not only nourishes the sword within it, but our whole state of being. Close your eyes and allow the awareness you normally keep in your head to sink down into this ocean of nectar in the heart. Feel yourself being deeply nourished, every nook and cranny of your awareness is lubricated and refreshed in sheath of this experience. We were instructed in Sutra 3.20 to expand this nectar into the 3 states. Though this sheath naturally oil our awareness at the entries and exits of our reality— for example, your morning and evening sit nourish you, but is that nectar present in the middle of your day. Or, you might be excited to start or finish a project, but where is that excitement during the project? Our work as yogis is to find a way to hold and spread this nectar into the other three states: “The fourth state (turya), which is filled with pure knowledge, pure light and the ecstasy and joy of turya, must be sprinkled and expanded just as oil expands when it is poured on a smooth surface like a piece of cloth. For just as oil spreads on this surface, adhering to it, so in this way a yogī must expand the state of turya into the other three states.” As was said before, to spread this nectar we must “hold” the Turya state as we enter and exit the many sheathing and unsheathing moments of our day. To pull your focus inside as you are about to engage externally, and to follow your focus inside, and keep it there, when that event comes to an end. “The yogī must prolong turya in such a way that its nectar becomes established and pervades not only in the beginning and the end but also in the middle of these three states. And the means to accomplishing this in all three states is to “hold it.” Hold it at the time of entry and hold it at the time of exit. This nectar of turya (turyarasa) must be properly held with full awareness so that it is expanded in the center of these three states. ” Simply taking one conscious breath before talking can help you draw that nectar of the heart up, and then taking time to breathe while you talk can help you stay connected inside. When you're finished talking, let your awareness actually turn within, and pay attention to what the next person is saying, or to a slight pause that naturally occurs. You can also try to pay attention to the spaces between events, such as when walking from one room to another, or driving from point A to Point B— let your awareness remain sheathed in these in between moments so that when you arrive it will draw that nectar into your reality. And finally, trying to bring more awareness to the space between the waking and dreaming state itself, both by doing practice as you fall asleep, and doing a little practice before you leave bed in the morning. Just tapping into that nectar, until it starts to permeate. Sutra 3.20 sets the stage for the work, and gives us practical approaches to expand the space of Turya in our lives, but Sutra 3.21 tells us more about ‘how' we hold that nectar. “The yogī who is merged in his self must enter completely with his mind filled with great awareness.” Ie. We must ‘merge completely' in order to allow this nectar to permeate our reality. On the Hero's journey of enlightenment, we are ascending a mountain of Karma to ultimately gain the perspective of enlightenment. We use physical tools to navigate the initial aspects of the journey— like healthy living, asana practice, and seva. Those become a foundation in our practice, and guide us towards a higher elevation, where we learn to use subtler tools of awareness like pranayama, mantra and silent meditation. These tools are like a GPS system, keeping us climbing towards our enlightenment. And Just like following a real GPS system, you walk or drive through your life, then we check in with our GPS to make sure we are on track. We sit in the morning, then we live our waking state, and then sit in the evening, and live our dreaming state. We might get off track, but our GPS guides us back on the path. In a way, this also mirrors the transition that is occurring in our tradition right now. We all have the luxury of a having a living breathing GPS called Babaji. You could say, in fact, that GPS stands for Guru Positioning System, in that your Guru keeps you on track when you start to stray. We can check in with our Guru during practice sessions and energetically be lifted and placed back on the path. This also goes for times in all of our sangha programs, as they are an extension of the Guru's Shakti. You can log in, and with minimal effort be air lifted back onto the path— even if you are resistant! This is the nature of the three jewels— Teacher, Teaching and Sangha. They are jewels precisely because of the power they have to keep us on track towards our inner realization. This Sutra affirms this path from physical to subtle, but then extends our journey into the Supreme: “When he establishes and resides in the awareness of his God consciousness in the waking state (jāgrat), the dreaming state (svapna), and in the state of deep sleep (suṣupti), then the gross movement of his breath enters into the subtle movement of breath and the subtle movement of breath enters into that which is supreme, where he experiences the supreme motion (spanda) in his own nature. (Netra Tantra 8.12)” This “Supreme Experience” lies beyond the physical and subtle— and requires a unique kind of work and tool. Basically, the summit we are ascending goes beyond the reach of our GPS, and to go any further will require a level of surrender that hasn't been asked of us yet. There is a scene in every great adventure movie, where the character has to let go of the tools or map that got them there, and find the resolve within themselves to complete the journey— this is that moment for us as a sangha, and for all yogis according to the Sutras. Imagine tossing your phone on the ground because it won't help you anymore. Dropping your backpack of tools because youre beyond their elevation. You stop waiting for a chopper to fly in and save the day and you start walking up, not down, the mountain. As you can imagine, in this moment, you begin to merge with your destination— or it might be more fitting to say, your destiny. You finally begin to use your own being, your own awarenesss, as the tool to guide you. And according to the Sutra that precisely when it appears— an internal guidance system. No screens, no batteries, no softwares updates— its Shiva's GPS, and it literally exists within you, as your very being. As Babaji says, you step off the cliff and go up. “When mind (mānasaṁ), individual consciousness (cetanā), the energy of breathing (śaktiḥ), and ego (ātmā), disappear, then that formation of Bhairava is found existing there.”- (Vijñānabhairava 138)” This is to say that literally when these outer distractions disappear, the inner one illuminate. That's the tool and experience this Sutra is here to give us— one gained only by merging. There's no button for this device, though, to access it, we are taught, you have to let go of external attachments— then it appears. Or here in the Jnanagarbha Stotra: “O Mother, “when, in ordinary daily life one repels the actions of the mind and shatters dependence on the senses, by which one is enslaved, causing one to follow them according to their every wish, and instead diverts their senses towards God consciousness, then by your grace they instantly achieve that supreme state of God consciousness, which floods them with the unparalleled nectar of bliss (ānanda).” “Set aside the gross means such as the holding of breath, concentration and contemplation, and by means of the thoughtless process, maintain one-pointed thought merged in the self (svacitta). ” - Netra Tantra The timing of this Sutra could not be more fitting for our current journey as a Sangha. Babaji is still with us, but simultaneously, is encouraging us to ascend higher in our practice, to begin exploring the space beyond the reach of our minds and devices. If we get off track, we can walk back down and reconnect through our traditional means— but this is the time to apply yourself to new heights— to go after the summit you have been envisioning for your entire life. To merge with your practice in a way that scares you, to go after the it with full resolve. The energy is there to support you, both in your ability to attempt it, but also in your ability to achieve it. What does this look like for you in your life? The Sutra tells us, that's the place to start. “Keeping the activity of the mind apart, one must unite that activity in God consciousness. Then this bound limited being (paśu) will realize the state of Śiva and be liberated (muktaḥ). Thereupon, he is beyond the ocean of repeated births and deaths. (Svacchanda Tantra 4.437)” You don't have to try to ascend this mountain all at once— you just unite this resolve within the activities of your life. Merge with your mission a little throughout the day, and watch as you begin to climb past your perceived limitations, towards a summit of Samadhi.
