Kris Jones is a professional runner for Hoka coming from Wales. Kris placed 8th at the 2023 world trail and mountain running championships Innsbruck 2023 in the short trail distance, and thanks to his result he helped the GB team take home the gold medal with his teammates Thomas Roach and Jonathan Albon. One reason why I decided to invide Kris to the podcast was because he's always been very open about his training and he recently posted a very good article on Substack about his preparation for the world championship race. He also shared some very interesting reflection on how he managed the race - which was a 45km and 3400m of elevation, which is approximately or 28 miles and 11 thousand feet of vert. Kris has an orienteering background and he's also a really good road and track runner, with PRs of 13:45 in the 5000m, 28.23 in the 10000m, 63' in the half marathon and 2:17 in the marathon. Lenker
On the very first episode Jonty and Kris give a short intro to themselves as they begin to delve into the Good, the Bad and the Obscure of the sporting world with 44 passes to the goal, a great big ol' long swim, some squabbling at the F1 and a look at Obstacle course racing.
We had the pleasure of having Jonathan Albon on the podcast to chat about his recent 3 World Championships titles including the Spartan Race WC, which is the first race of the 3 in the 1 million pound challenge set down move Joe De Sena. Also we asked Jon some listener questions plus we look ahead to Jon’s next race OCR World Championships.
Enjoy! #flerhinderåtfolket
We've got an epic two-parter with OCR World Champ and Skyrunner, Jonathan Albon. Before the guys speak to Jon, David recalls his experience of this year's Marathon du Medoc, reveals a challenge by Monkey Tennis podcast, talks "easter eggs" and reveals why he has a beer named after him. Then the guys speak with Jon Albon (interview starts on 42 minutes, if you want to skip ahead like Fi Silk...) In this episode, Jon reveals: How he got started running and his crazy-good first ever race (you won't believe his first ever race time) How he progressed in the sport and became involved in OCR and then Skyrunning His 30 second sleep trick at that infamous Winter Nuts How he preps for races and how he trains away from running ... and his exact stats (so you can compare and contrast... and weep) Listen to this episodes and you'll get a glimpse into the mind of a serious competitor and champion (... so it's a pretty big contrast from Jody and David's ramblings) Oh, and make sure you listen to Part 2. In this episode I talk to Peter Dobos from Obstacle Course Training. We talk with Peter about what the Obstacle Course Training program is, how it works and what you get. We also talk about the 2016 Spartan Race World Championships, what happened, who won and a general analysis of the race. Lastly we cover the upcoming Obstacle Course Racing World Championships. In case you have not heard, World OCR Championship Season is upon us. Sure, maybe you don't follow Spartan Racing or give a hoot about the fastest growing sport in the world. However if you do… there is a lot of excitement afoot. Reigning Spartan World and OCR World Champion Jonathan Albon is looking to double up and defend both of his titles. Who has the nuts to beat him? Ryan Atkins, maybe a dark horse in Hunter McIntyre? I made the call to check up on Jonathan to see how his preparations are coming, asked what his game plan is and why he poses such a threat. Here is a guy with little state side exposure, holds two of the three titles and his been training and racing abroad. Aside from his humble disposition he has the tools and the grit to take it all find out why.
