This week, my guest is bee expert Kevin Hancock. Kevin has invented a honeybee nest box that's the only self-regulating honey harvesting system in the world, meaning the bees will dictate how much honey you can take dependent on the environment that year. It's a way of hosting rather than keeping bees and is an intriguing system. About the Eco Beehive “ECO BEEHIVE is the only SELF REGULATING HONEY HARVESTING SYSTEM IN THE WORLD! Wow that is so exciting!! But it is !! no really.. give me a chance and I'll explain. I am on a mission to strengthen the honeybee network across Europe!! You are automatically involved. First. What is strengthening the honeybees network? Honeybees don't live in isolation. They are all interconnected though a network of colonies. No beekeeper is in isolation. Whatever they do impacts on the greater network around them. OK so why? To get more colony's in the environment. Not apiaries. More hives spread out creates a network of interconnected nests, results in stronger genetics. Faster response to problems like predation and sickness, across the network. The problem is the network has collapsed. You can affect change by installing honeybees nest boxes. I recommend my nest box: Where did it all start you ask? Well as a little boy helping with the bees on my Grandfather's farm in Africa, to catching my first swarm when I was about twelve years old. This then sparked the interest and evolved into my hobby of beelineing (tracking bees to find wild colonies). My story makes me uniquely qualified to design and build the ECO- BEEHIVE. With an interest in bees ( Apis mellifera ) not beekeeping! My interest is mostly investigating bees in the wild. These little insects are under pressure from all sorts of thing. But simplest of these to fix and something we can all get involved in and help with is to simply give them a safe, natural home to live. Solving this simple but big problem, is my mission! After trying many different designs over quite a few decades, and using all the data I have collected from observing bees, I have developed a nest that is so convincing, to bees, they will just move in on their own! But more impressive is they will stay, But even more impressive, is they will then thrive. This then is the ECO--BEEHIVE. www.gardenersbeehive.com Other episodes if you liked this one: Urban Bees - My guest this week is urban apiculturist Mark Patterson. Mark founded and runs Apicultural where he work with businesses and communities to invest in natural capital, improving the environment for pollinators and delivering pollinator monitoring surveys for clients. He provides honey bee hive management solutions, beekeeping training and education and also supplies quality urban honey to a select group of establishments. So you'd think Mark would be all for the idea of urban honeybees, right? Listen on… Looking Out for Bumblebees - This episode my guest is Gill Perkins, CEO of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust. We talk about bumblebee populations and habitats, what we can do to encourage and care for bumblebees in our gardens and about the role of bumblebees in tomato pollination, which came as a complete surprise to me! Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts
DoD tossed the revisions to the OMB; the 300,000 people in the DIB are waiting with ‘bated breath to see what it looks like in the Federal Register. Will it be a “final” rule? Will it be an “interim” rule? The first paragraph sounds like an academic dispute in an ivory tower; that “tower talk” is particularly important for the 300,000 companies that comprise the defense industrial base. Today, sit down with Kevin Hancock from Exostar. He will give you his thoughts on this important piece of federal regulation. If you wanted to classify this transition as revolution or evolution, you would have to side with the Darwin followers. The CMMC is not anything new, this is just the next logical step. Smaller companies may earn a living as subcontractors to a large prime contractor. The large organizations are making inquiries to all their partners to see where they stand with CMMC. May are looking in the mirror and asking, where do I start? During the interview, Kevin Hancock from Exostar breaks the process down into segments that any company can understand. He explains that ten companies may have ten different sets of requirements to comply with CMMC. For example, do you have the expertise to run the requirement in-house? Even if you did, is this the optime way to use their time? Will an application from a company like Exostar be able to leverage the skill set you have in-house? Your company may just need a few templates to complete. However, you may be in a situation where you are looking at six months to complete an 18-month project. Had you started earlier, you would not have been in the situation. We all understand that CMMC was put in place to safeguard controlled unclassified information and controlled unclassified information. These are reasonable requirements, yet each person listening to this podcast may have a different journey. Exostar can help. Connie's motivational quote for today is by – Ryunosuke Satoro, “Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.'” Recently, have you read any articles about new leadership skills needed to succeed? Leadership skills like agility, empathy, respectful communication, listening to employees, and more. As I reflect, leaders from around the globe are waking up to what true leadership should have been all along and that we have been blindly using the model used throughout corporate cultures, at least during my 40-year career. I believe that not having a tangible and duplicatable leadership culture will cost organizations millions of dollars in lost productivity and, ultimately, lost revenue. So, what is a great model to follow? I'm glad you asked! If you're a CEO and you're hoarding power then chances are that you're limiting your organisation's performance. But don't just take my word for it; take it from someone who's done it both ways… In this episode I had the pleasure of speaking with Kevin Hancock, CEO of Hancock Lumber Company, to talk about sustainable success. Hancock Lumber was founded in 1848, so they know a thing or two about sustainability! The foundation of their business's sustainability doesn't only depend on the sustainability of their supplies (i.e. trees), though that is critical, it also rests on people-oriented sustainability. And this is where Kevin thrives in his stewardship as CEO of the company. ✅ Creating meaningful work for staff ✅ Creating a working environment in which staff are engaged and happy in their work, making it safe for them to speak up about necessary changes and improvements ✅ Empowering staff throughout the company to make their very best contributions through the dispersal of power But before you start thinking that this is some sort of fluffy, emotional idealism, you need to pay attention to the cold, hard numbers that Hancock Lumber's put up since Kevin started to disperse power throughout the organisation. There's a very stark before and after here – it's staggering! Why the change in approach? In 2010, Kevin lost his voice and was forced to change his approach; which is when the magic started to happen. Tune in to learn more about Kevin's story, his approach and his enviable results.
On this episode of The Dirt, we're chatting to Kevin Hancock, founder of the Gardener's Beehive. Kevin tells us all about his Eco-Beehive invention and why gardeners all over the country love it. He also shares fascinating information about honeybees and how we can help boost colonies. Plus, the team reflect on autumn highlights and their best harvests of the year.

Quote “I think a company being profitable is very, very important, but it is not the highest mission. I've come to think about the profitability of our company as a really cool outcome of a higher calling. The higher calling is to honor everybody at work. When you honor everybody at work, it's pretty much guaranteed they're going to collectively produce exceptional results. What that really is about is the company is soaring on the wings of thriving humans at work, and the profit is the outcome. An outcome not the goal.” - Kevin Hancock, chairman and CEO of Hancock Lumber. Kevin Hancock, featured in the New York Times, and author of 48 Whispers (Post Hill Press; https://thebusinessofsharedleadership.com/). As the CEO of Hancock Lumber, Kevin struggled to guide the two-century-old lumber company through the 2007 collapse of the housing market only to lose some of his voice to the rare neurological speech disorder, spasmodic dysphonia. This experience sent him journeying more than twenty times to the Pine Ridge Indian reservation in South Dakota in search of voice recovery through self-reflection and immersion in nature. While at Pine Ridge, he met an entire community that felt a piece of their authentic voice had been taken or stolen from them—helping him realize there are lots of way to lose one's voice in this world. From this experience, Kevin came to see life as a quest for self-actualization. A unique photojournalism collection of short meditations, accompanied by full-page color photographs of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and the northern plains, 48 Whispers explores the concepts of shared leaders, dispersed power, and respect for all voices. Kevin's full-page color photos and writings span a decade of over twenty visits to the region—during which time he builds a series of deep friendships on the reservation and takes two Lakota names. ------------------------------- As of this moment, we have over 80 hours of premium videos available at path11tv.com, with new videos added regularly. Connie's motivational quote for today is by – Andy Hargreaves, “Too often, shared visions really mean, ‘I have a vision; you share it!'” YouTube: https://youtu.be/ZQQyirqyoYw Check Out These Highlights: Lately, I have read more articles about the new leadership skills (agility, empathy, respectful communication, and the list goes on), that are needed. So, my curious mind keeps questioning, “are these skills new, or should they have been part of a solid leadership model for organizations all along?” As I reflect, I personally feel that leaders from around the globe are waking up to what true leadership should have been all along and that we have been blindly using the model that has been used throughout corporate cultures at least during my 40-year career. I believe the cost of not having a tangible and duplicatable leadership culture, will cost organizations millions of dollars in lost productivity and ultimately lost revenue. So, what is a great model to follow? I'm glad you asked! About Kevin Hancock: Kevin is the CEO of Hancock Lumber, one of the oldest companies in America, and a six-time recipient of the ‘Best Places to Work in Maine' award. In 2010, at the peak of the national housing and mortgage market collapse, Kevin acquired a rare neurological voice disorder called Spasmodic Dysphonia (SD). When his own voice became weakened, he developed a new leadership style based on strengthening the voices of others. Today we are going to discuss his amazing book, THE SEVENTH POWER – ONE CEO'S JOURNEY INTO THE BUSINESS OF SHARED LEADERSHIP. In his book, Kevin shares the philosophy, values, and strategies Hancock Lumber Company has embraced on its journey toward becoming an employee-centric company - where leadership responsibilities are broadly shared rather than power coming from the top down. Kevin Hancock is the founder of The Business of Shared Leadership.CEO Kevin Hancock describes how losing the full use of his speaking voice to a rare neurological disorder led him to a remote Indian reservation on the northern plains, where he discovered an entire community that did not feel heard. The two events convinced Kevin that each human is here on earth in a personal quest to find and share their own unique and never to be repeated voice. Unfortunately, across time leaders have done more to restrict the voices of others than to liberate them. Kevin takes these understandings and develops and deploys a new leadership model designed to push power out – away from the corporate center – and give everyone in the organization a leading voice. The result is a high performing corporate model in which business metrics soar as an outcome of a higher calling. The mission of this site is to heighten RESPECT FOR ALL VOICES. If everyone on Earth felt trusted, respected, valued, and heard, what might change? He also believes that the workplace can and must become a catalyst for this transformation. The purpose of a human life is self-actualization, and this requires safe communities that embrace people as they are. This site is an interactive resource center dedicated to reinventing the fundamentals of leadership, followership, and free enterprise. Leadership in the twenty-first century must be about dispersing power and giving others a stronger voice. Followers must become leaders in order to create change from within. Every human spirit is sacred by design. Organizations must learn to free the human spirit rather than constrict, control, and direct it.“When people feel heard, not judged, they relax. When people relax, they think. When people think, they grow.” —Kevin HancockBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.
Connie's motivational quotes for today is by – Stephen Covey, “An empowered organization is one in which individuals have the knowledge, skill, desire, and opportunity to personally succeed in a way that leads to collective organizational success." Do you trust that your people understand the organizational strategies and are able to put the strategies into practice? This week I am truly humbled to be welcoming Kevin Hancock to the show! Kevin is an award-winning author, speaker, and CEO. Hancock Lumber Company, one of America's oldest family businesses, is fully integrated across the forest products and building materials industries. Headquartered in Casco, Maine since 1848, the company is represented by its 565 employees who lead the activity of the business across 9 retail stores, 3 sawmills and a truss plant. The company also grows trees on 12,000 acres of timberland. Hancock Lumber is a seven-time consecutive recipient of the ‘Best Places to Work in Maine' award. The company is also a recipient of the Maine Family Business of the Year Award, the Governor's Award for Business Excellence, the MITC ‘Exporter of the Year' award, and the Pro-Sales National Dealer of the Year Award. In this episode, Kevin and I chat about how important organizational culture is. At his company, it's their mission to maximize the employee experience, which in turn ensures that the customer has a good experience. He makes it a point that "Organizations get what they prioritize" (note: that's different than "what they measure"), and proposes that perhaps the reason 67% of employees report feeling disengaged is because their organizations don't prioritize making their work experience enjoyable. Kevin also outlines his philosophy of ensuring people feel trusted, respected, valued, and heard... which may be my first tattoo! :) Kevin's contact info: Company website: https://www.hancocklumber.com/ Personal website: https://kevindhancock.com/ Company LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/hancock-lumber/ Kevin's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevin-hancock-6bb0501a1/ WATCH THIS! So where did this CEO of the oldest (1846) and most successful lumber company in Maine come up with this vision- Well it took a rare voice disorder, a walk in the desert at sunset and a remote Indian Reservation in South Dakota for him to make this truly revolutionary change at his lumber company--- and now he is telling the whole story and more in a beautiful new book called “THE SEVENTH POWER- One CEO's journey into the business of shared leadership" – published by Post Hill Press.

With only 1/3 of American workers describing their experience as engaging, Kevin lays out the framework for a new leadership model designed to strengthen the voices of others and drive workplace engagement to record levels for the benefit of all.
