Behind the facade of a religious community, lies a story of manipulation, mind control, and tragedy. Let's investigate the secrets, the power, and the psychological grip of the Word of Life Church – a story of religious devotion taken to the extreme. Welcome to another episode of The Unlovely Truth. I'm your host, private investigator Lori Morrison. Join me for another captivating true crime story, where physical, spiritual, and emotional safety takeaways are waiting for us. If you are listening, I believe you have a unique calling—to become a different kind of PI, not a typical private investigator, but a person of impact! This is Season 4, Episode 43. Our book this week is Broken Faith: Inside One of America's Most Dangerous Cults by Mitch Weiss and Holbrook Mohr. Our guest this week is Lori Prather, our chaplain here at The Unlovely Truth. Get ready for an eye-opening journey into the heart of the Word of Life Church– a story that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and make your question your own susceptibility to be manipulated. This is one of the most disturbing instances of what I considered spiritual abuse and physical abuse in a church setting that I've ever come across. A church movement that started in 1979 and still exists today has many critics and many who would defend it with their lives. Though written as an expose, I believe this book also serves as a cautionary tale of sorts. It may be hard for some of us to accept that people can proclaim to be godly, then turn around and be horribly abusive. But it does happen. That's why Jesus says this in Matthew 7:15 - Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. We will look at what else He says about how to recognize these false prophets. Matthew 7:15-20 NLT Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. A good tree can't produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can't produce good fruit. So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions. This passage of scripture is so straightforward and so practical and it calls us all to practice what security experts often call situational awareness. Jesus is instructing his disciples on how to know who in ministry is authentic, and who is not. He knew we would deal with situations like this and He told us exactly what to do! We have to embrace this as part of our calling. If we look closely at this passage, we can see that Jesus gave us a simple three step process. First we have to be willing to accept the fact that there will be false prophets trying to exert influence in our churches and ministries. Jesus doesn't say we might encounter them, He states that they will come. We are instructed to be on the lookout. Second, we must look objectively at a person's actions. Trees produce fruit, and people produce actions. If someone produces bad actions, they are not a harmless sheep but are really a vicious wolf. Third, Once we identify these bad actions, we have to deal with them. No - we aren't going to throw anyone in the fire, don't do that. But we may need to have that person step down from a leadership position or even remove them from our midst. I know that sounds harsh, but I didn't come up with this, God did. The integrity of our churches and our ministries is too important to handle wolves in sheep's clothing any differently. Closing our eyes and hoping for the best is not a safety strategy! More than 600,000 people go missing in the U.S. every single year according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs). Even if 90% of them are found alive or their remains are recovered, that would leave around 6,000 who become a part of the long-term missing. So that number grows every single year. Welcome to another episode of The Unlovely Truth. I'm your host, private investigator Lori Morrison. Join me for more true crime stories, where physical, spiritual, and emotional safety takeaways are waiting for us. If you are listening, I believe you have a unique calling—to become a different kind of PI, not a typical private investigator, but a person of impact! This is Season 4, Episode 42. This week we're going to talk about the growing problem of long-term missing people in the United States, highlight some cases, and I'll give you ways that you can protect yourself and your loved ones. Every missing person case is a tragedy and collectively the issue has been called the nation's silent mass disaster. When we think of missing persons, the initial image that comes to mind might be a recent disappearance—a frantic search, news coverage, and community efforts to find the individual. But what about those cases where the passage of time hasn't brought closure? Where loved ones continue to grapple with uncertainty, not knowing the fate or whereabouts of their family or friends for months, years, or even decades? As time passes, the public and media attention tends to diminish, reducing the resources and support available for continued search efforts. Families often experience prolonged emotional distress, with the uncertainty of not knowing whether their loved ones are alive or what might have happened to them. We can't forget that these long-term cases affect the families and communities involved. The impact on families is profound. The ongoing emotional distress and ambiguity can disrupt their lives in so many ways—financially, emotionally, and psychologically. Many families are left in a perpetual state of limbo, unable to move forward, and yet not having closure. You have to re-evaluate so many life events. Do you have a vacation or wedding planned - do you postpone them? The toll on mental health, relationships, and everyday functioning is immeasurable. These cases also affect communities, as unresolved cases erode trust in the justice and law enforcement systems, leaving communities feeling vulnerable and often overlooked. Let's take a look at four long-term missing persons cases and see if we can help find some answers for the families of Jason Washington from Columbia, Missouri, Warren County Jane Doe from Bowling Green, Kentucky, Lulaida Morales Sejalbo from Santa Clara, California, and Michelle Parker from Orlando, Florida. The Bible passage I chose for this episode is one I'm sure many of you are familiar with. Philippians 4:6–7 (NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. To put Paul's words into context, we have to remember that when he wrote this, he was living under house arrest. He understood what it was like to face an uncertain future. Hope seemed like a very far off thing. It's hard to imagine not being anxious about anything when our worlds have been turned upside down. But Paul isn't asking us to do something superhuman - he's simply encouraging us to replace the anxiety and fear we naturally feel in horrible situations with prayer. That's how we can have a peace from God that we can't even understand, and we don't have to. As the old hymn says, we just trust and obey. That's how we can have a peace that will allow us to hold onto hope. The families of the missing persons we talked about today need that so very desperately. I don't know the families, but because of their situations I know they desperately need our prayers, and our help if we are in a position to give some. We certainly can all share this episode and someone who has answers to help solve these cases might come forward. Would you be shocked if I told you that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been slapped, shoved, pushed, or worse by an intimate partner? Or that in the U.S., over 50% of all homicides are domestic violence related? That's why when a woman is murdered, police naturally look at her husband or boyfriend. But when a man is killed, do they always look at the woman in his life? Welcome to another episode of The Unlovely Truth. I'm your host, private investigator Lori Morrison. Join me for another captivating true crime story, where physical, spiritual, and emotional safety takeaways are waiting for us. If you are listening, I believe you have a unique calling—to become a different kind of PI, not a typical private investigator, but a person of impact! This is Season 4, Episode 37. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, so we are going to be investigating cases where people who were supposed to love someone did just the opposite. We've all heard stories of women who, after years of abuse, killed the husband or boyfriend who has terrorized them. What we don't often hear are stories of men who fight back after years of abuse from their wives or girlfriends. We're going to hear two of those stories today, and see if these men are treated the same as their female counterparts. According to the ACLU, the average prison sentence of men who kill their female partners is 2 to 6 years. Women who kill their partners are sentenced on average to 15 years. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline website, more than 12 million women and men over the course of a single year are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States. That's an average of 24 people per minute. Two-thirds of female stalking victims were stalked by current or former intimate partners. And the fallout spreads to others like ripples in a pond. Proverbs 20:10 GOD'S WORD Translation A double standard of weights and measures—both are disgusting to the Lord. I believe that God hates corruption and favoritism. We all have opportunities to speak out against unfairness when we see it. The Bible verse I chose for this episode is from Proverbs chapter 20 and it's verse 10. I'm going to read from the God's word translation. A double standard of weights and measures. Both are disgusting to the Lord. I love that plain, very visceral language of this translation. Because I believe that it shows us so clearly. How much God hates corruption and favoritism. Not all of these victims were treated. In accordance to the facts of the situation. People had agendas. There are inherent biases in how men and women are treated in these situations. And you've taken the first step. Toward helping. You've listened to this and you've educated yourself on what some of the problems are. And I think we all in our lives have opportunities to speak out against unfairness. When we see it. And I hope that you will be looking for opportunities. To stand up. And help a victim of domestic violence. Not all of them are going to admit that this is an issue they're struggling with. But if you suspect something. Just make sure that that person knows that you are a safe person to talk to. You don't need to fix their problem. You just need to listen. And then you can tell them. I'm not sure what the answer is, but I will help you find it. Let me know what you think! Send me an email a lori@theunlovelytruth.com or message me on social media. We tend to trust people who are in positions of power, or who hold down jobs that are service oriented like a doctor, a pastor, or a therapist. Amy Nordhues trusted her therapist. Everyone in her community loved him. Her friend raved about him. He was an elder at the church she was attending. Amy didn't know it, but he was also very, very dangerous. Our book this week is Preyed Upon: Breaking Free from Therapist Abuse and our guest is its author, Amy Nordhues. Amy is an author and speaker who hopes to use her experience both as a new Christian and as a victim of sexual abuse by a therapist/clergy to help, support and educate others. Through the telling of her very personal story she hopes to provide insight into the following: The inner workings of the abuse process of adult victims, how past childhood abuse can make an adult vulnerable to predators and so much more. I do want to caution everyone that while we won't be getting graphic, we will be discussing sexual abuse, and abuse by a trusted therapist. Please use your discretion about whether this is an episode that won't trigger anything for you. Luke 8:16-18 “Now no one lights a lamp and then covers it with a container [to hide it], or puts it under a bed; instead, he puts it on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not become evident, nor anything secret that will not be known and come out into the open. So be careful how you listen; for whoever has [a teachable heart], to him more [understanding] will be given; and whoever does not have [a longing for truth], even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.” There's a lot going on here in this short parable. Jesus dives right into what the purpose of a lamp is - to give light to people. What light does is to drive out darkness. How can we expect people to want to hear the gospel when it comes out that we are hiding and excusing sin? The news is full of stories that involve trusted members of a faith community who are abusing others in secret. Why are we shocked when the world doesn't trust us, when they call us hypocrites? We want to make our churches safe for the people in our congregations, but also for people who have been hurt and aren't sure where they can find a safe refuge. That's part of what author Amy Nordhues shared with us today. I hope you'll take something you've learned here and help your church become a light in the darkness in your community. Can you trust everyone in your church? Not always. It's hard enough for me to imagine having a missing loved one. Can you? Then picture finding out that a serial killer has been operating where and when your loved one went missing. That's the scenario we have for this week's case. Authorities may never know exactly how many victims this killer had, but a new coroner investigating the case is determined to identify as many of the known remains as he can. Our book this week is “The Double Life of a Serial Murderer” and our guest is Hamilton County, Indiana Coroner Jeff Jellison. He is a former law enforcement officer and is a certified Medical-Legal Death Investigator. Jeff has a very big job trying to determine who the bones found on Herb Baumeister's Indiana estate belong to. And as you'll hear, there were thousands of bones and bone fragments discovered on Fox Hollow Farm. Let's investigate what in the world happened in central Indiana. Then we'll dive into Matthew 7:1-5: “Do not judge and criticize and condemn others, so that you may not be judged and criticized and condemned yourselves. For just as you judge and criticize and condemn others, you will be judged and criticized and condemned, and in accordance with the measure you [use to] deal out to others, it will be dealt out again to you. Why do you stare from without at the very small particle that is in your brother's eye but do not become aware of and consider the beam of timber that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me get the tiny particle out of your eye', when there is the beam of timber in your own eye? You hypocrite, first get the beam of timber out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the tiny particle out of your brother's eye.” This isn't a long passage, but there is so much practical wisdom here so be sure you catch this episode, then check out some earlier ones. Digging into a family search is no longer just for families tracing their own ancestry. It's now a crime fighting tool, used by experts in the fast-growing field of forensic genealogy. I'm really going to be geeking out today because this stuff fascinates me. I've done quite a bit of research into my own family tree, and to see these techniques used to help solve crime is nothing short of amazing. Our book this week is “The Boy in the Box: The Unsolved Case of America's Unknown Child” by David Stout and our guest is forensic genealogist Daphne Dennis. I'm sure most of you know a lot about the first big case to bring genetic genealogy to our attention, the solving of the Golden State Killer case. Today's case didn't catch a killer, but it did give a murdered child back his name after 65 long years. Let's talk about identity as it's related to us in John 1:11-13. “He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him. But to all who did receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.” DNA testing is so great for establishing our earthly identity, but for those of us who have put our faith in Jesus, we have an additional identity. We are children of God. It's not conditional on what we've done, or what others have done to us. All that matters is our faith. That should cause us to look at ourselves differently - and at other people. If this episode has you ready to be a different kind of P.I. - a Person of Impact, check out the show notes for ways to volunteer with the doe network or even your local law enforcement agency. Didn't know you could do that? Different agencies will have their own guidelines about what volunteers are allowed to do, but many allow volunteers to check the jurisdiction for abandoned vehicles, do safety checks for vacationing homeowners, help compile crime statistics, assist with search and rescue operations, and maybe even cold case files. Give your local authorities a call and see what you might be able to do! Famous unsolved murders get a lot of attention. Think about how often you see media articles about JonBenet Ramsey, The Zodiac Killer, or the Black Dahlia. In his book “A Long Walk Home”, award-winning journalist Joe Strupp outlines the case of 17-year-old Carol Ann Farino in a small town just 10 miles away from New York City. After we investigate today's book about Carol's long unsolved case, we'll be joined by my guest Wendy Casteneda. She's going to share her own journey as someone who lost a sister to a violent murder. Wendy shares with us how her faith helped her get through the long years with no resolution, and the trial that finally put an end to the unknown. We all have our own “cold case” issues. We'll look at Psalm 37:7-10 to see how God wants us to respond in difficult situations. It's not always easy but it's a great way for you to be a different kind of PI - a Person of Impact. Keeping kids safe from predators is something that I hope is on everyone's radar - but sometimes we don't correctly judge who is a threat to our kids and who isn't. The Jerry Sandusky scandal and Penn State football's possible cover-up that broke just over a decade ago may never have come to light if one of his victims hadn't decided to be silent no longer. Jerry coached under the legendary Joe Paterno from 1969 to 1999. We are going to talk about Aaron's story, and how we can become more discerning to increase safety for our children and children in our community. Our book this week is “Silent No More: Victim 1's Fight For Justice Against Jerry Sandusky” by Aaron Fisher, and our guest is Julie Lowe, author of the book “Safeguards: Shielding Our Homes and Equipping Our Kids”. It's full of great safety information, which you know I love! We're going to share some great information with you this week to help you keep all of the kiddos in your life a bit safer. Julie has a lot to say about discernment, so I want to investigate what Proverbs 3:21-24 says on that topic: My child, don't lose sight of common sense and discernment. Hang on to them, for they will refresh your soul. They are like jewels on a necklace. They keep you safe on your way, and your feet will not stumble. You can go to bed without fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly. So if discernment can keep us safe, how do we make ourselves more discerning? I've got three tips for you in that regard. First, we have to read the Bible so we know what standards God expects. Second, we evaluate character based on a person's actions, not their words. Third, we pray for wisdom which God says he will give us whenever we ask. So if you just aren't sure about trusting someone - read what God's word says is good, look at that person's actions to see if they match God's standard, then pray for the wisdom to make good decisions. At least 1 in 7 children have experienced child abuse or neglect in the past year in the United States. Since these are very underreported crimes, the actual number of children affected is probably even higher. There are children in your neighborhood, your kid's school, and even your church who are being or have been abused. Does your church offer classes or support groups that teach positive parenting skills? If not, see if you can be the person who gets something started. I looked online for a Bible-based curriculum to use with at-risk families and couldn't find anything! There's plenty out there about teaching parents how to raise biblically literate kids, but I didn't see anything for a church to use as an outreach to its community. If you know of one, please reach out and share it with me! If you liked this episode, be sure to check out some earlier ones. This week's episode touches on so many interesting topics. You'll hear behind the scenes stories from a fellow private investigator, information about a celebrity investigation, tips on how to serve the deaf community, and what it's like to have a family member murdered. My guest today has done it all. Of course, we will also take a look at a true crime case that I hope we can study some red flag examples so we can avoid the heartache that Becky Galsworthy and her family endured. Blending families with teenagers is tough. Darren Galsworthy had two children with his ex-girlfriend Tanya when he ran into an old acquaintance named Anjie. Things between them got serious quickly. Anjie had a child too, a son named Nathan. It was obvious to Darren that the boy was possessive of his mother. But there was no way to know that possessiveness would lead to the murder of a family member. Our book this week is “The Evil Within” by Darren Galsworthy and our guest is former private investigator, Amazon bestselling author, philanthropist, and artist Connie Rowland. This week's Scripture is from the Old Testament: Proverbs 14:22 CSB Don't those who plan evil go astray? But those who plan good find loyalty and faithfulness. Nathan's actions as they are described in our book for this week are a perfect example of this passage. Notice that God isn't calling out just those who DO evil things, but those who PLAN to do evil things. James 1:15 says, “Then when the illicit desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin has run its course, it gives birth to death.” Our thought lives matter because they influence our actions. When we think on things, and plan to take good action, the Bible promises that we will find loyalty and faithfulness. I want to tie that into this week's practical action step. When we see someone struggling with dark thoughts, or we notice anyone being obsessed with violent song lyrics, movies or video games, we need to check in with that person. It may not be an issue, but they might be having thoughts that will give birth to deeds with life-altering consequences. We've got to watch out for each other so we can keep ourselves, our families, and our communities safer. For another mesmerizing episode about family dysfunction, listen here. Blake wraps up Acts 5 by zooming out and looking at the lessons we can learn from the chapter as a whole. Specifically, what does the story of Ananias and Sapphira have in common with the disciples' bold preaching and evangelism? What can these two seemingly detached narratives together teach us about developing a healthy fear of the Lord and the fruit that it bears? Beginnings is a series produced by That You May Know Him Ministries and is hosted by Blake Barbera and Kevin Powell. In Beginnings, the hosts walk chapter by chapter through two biblical books, Genesis and the Book of Acts, alternating back and forth between books every 2-3 episodes.Show Notes:With: Blake BarberaWebsite: www.thatyoumayknowhim.comSend us an email: info@thatyoumayknowhim.comBuy Blake's Book: Secularism, the Church, and the Way Forward https://wipfandstock.com/978166671051...Subscribe to That You May Know Him on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQj8J9HlcMgTA7Z5raVpeEA/featuredSubscribe to the Podcast: https://www.thatyoumayknowhim.com/listeniTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4KIz8KN...Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/99551148-3529-466b-a628-dfe594d26eca/that-you-may-know-himConnect w/ Blake on social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/blake.barber...Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/barberablake/Support the show

You may claim to be a fearless wonder of the world. But the truth is every one has fears. People have lives consumed with fear and take meds to get by. Some just worry about more simple mundane things like public speaking or roller coasters. While few truly face the fear of death doing a dangerous job, being attacked by a tiger, or eating enough to survive another day. Truth is, the majority of people in the world are experiencing the safest times ever known. Very rarely does anyone struggle for anything. I see supposed homeless and poor people who are fat and have a cell phone! So why is fear so prevalent? We are surrounded by TV's, computers, and phones non-stop talking about what you should fear. Then people of course love to gossip about the latest statistics around crime, pandemics, wars, etc. It's going to take conscious steps to accomplish things if fear is holding you back. So this episode covers putting fear in its place behind you as you move forward. I mean all fears big or small! Use any or all of these steps I discuss to accomplish your mission. Get ready to take notes. ( p.s. F*** you fear!) A special thanks to Jim Kwik for some of these outstanding methods. He is worth researching. Enjoy! Are you ready to be victorious in your life and business? Yet there is that nagging feeling…that doubt…that fear holding you back from that BIG, GOD-SIZED vision and mission that you know you were meant for. There will always be people (sometimes those closest to you) that will cheer you on until you no longer fit in the box they created for you. We can't control how people react to us, we can only control how we respond. No one is responsible for your dreams and vision. Take responsibility. Become a victor rather than a victim. Don't settle for any less than you know you were created for. Make a decision. Push forward. Persevere. Kick. Fear. In. The. Face. In this episode of the Epic Success Podcast, I'm talking with my friend, Thea Wood. She is an entrepreneur, mom, wife, and author of Kick Fear In The Face. She is fantastic and fearless and we can glean so much from her story and testimony. This interview is a part of a series called Take Your Seat at the Table, where I'm interviewing the Queens from our Queens Table Mastermind, all multi- 7 & 8-figure female business owners. They are going to share their journey with you. The good, the bad, the pivots, the tears, and the victories so you can see that YOU deserve a seat at the table. When I was growing my business, I just wanted to be able to have conversations like this one to figure out how I could think differently. So…this is for you! Pull up a chair - you deserve the success you see behind your eyes! The biggest take-aways from today's episode are: Partner with your future self. Invest in yourself. Everything is within you. When you can begin to get clarity of where you're going, you can create habits that set you up for success everyday. It's those micro-habits that set the tone for our future. They are connected to the bigger vision. Stop “shoulding” on yourself. Get a clear picture of what the next 5 to 10 years look like. How you do one thing is how you do most things. We get so accustomed to getting things fast, that we lose sight of the steps that it takes to get to that destination. Get yourself around like-minded people. Take the seat at the table and commit daily. Choose 5 daily tasks that you can start your day with. Resistance will come. Stay connected and you will find breakthrough and freedom. Considering the worst and best-case scenarios can dramatically alter your perspective and give you much-needed clarity about your fears. When you feel afraid, think about the worst case scenario. If everything went wrong, what is the worst that could happen? Now, what are the odds of that actually happening? Probably pretty low. The worst case very rarely happens. For example, say you're afraid of public speaking. The worst that could happen is you freeze up on stage, can't say anything, and are completely embarrassed. But will that happen? Almost certainly not. And even if it did, would it actually be that bad? Sure, you'd be embarrassed, but that's about it. When you engage in worst-case thinking, you'll often discover that the worst isn't nearly as bad as you think it is. This enables you to move forward and overcome your fears. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wayne-weathersby/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wayne-weathersby/support

This solo episode I decided to put out the message that we have the power to take back out our own health. In the wake of this new Covid variant and back to school time, it is even more important now than ever to understand that instead of asking the question, should my child wear a mask, we should be asking "what foods will help their immune system?" 70-80% of our immunity resides in our gut, yet we are doing everything to create an unhealthy gut microbiome with masking and toxic chemicals. As a Certified Functional Medicine Health Coach, I felt compelled to use this platform to put the message out that we are currently not looking at the root cause of fighting this virus or any strand of virus.
