I had the pleasure of chatting with Kurt Roskopf, an inspiring advocate for inclusivity and accessibility. Listen as my guest host, Andrea Kumlin, interviewing me on the topic of aging and family caregiving. I shared my personal experience of supporting my mother through recent health challenges, emphasizing the importance of setting boundaries, providing support, and taking time for self-care. We discussed the challenges of balancing caregiving responsibilities with work obligations and highlighting the need for clear communication. I explained the significance of being supportive to my younger sister (who lives closer to mom) while navigating the complexities of elder care and addressing untreated depression. Andrea was a great host, you may remember from a few episodes ago, who can relate to everything I am currently going through due to her business Senior Sass. DJ is a lifelong entrepreneur who believes in abundance and that there ARE advantages to aging! Her mission is to Make People Better. Make People Better – 3 impactful words DJ lives by and by which Neora was founded. No wonder she is so passionate about sharing this story. She believes that through any adversity we might face we can come out better and stronger. Little did Andrea Kumlin, with Senior Sass, know that caring for her mom's end of life would present her next career opportunity. Once her mom has passed, she dusted herself off and thought it was over. But then family and friends started to go to her for advice. Andrea had also cared for other family members in their final days. She had a wealth of knowledge to share with others and has now created a way to help others. She gave us sneak peeks of what she offers. One thing she shared was the "go bag". We usually think of this when a woman is expecting. This is a similar idea but for a different stage of life. Andrea shared what was in her go bag and why. It was very insightful and I can't wait to hear what you found most valuable. Meet Andy Kumlin, the founder of Senior Sass. Andy's background of living in a multi-generational family and the experience of caring for her mother through the battle with dementia gave Andy tremendous insight into elder concerns in both the physical and financial realms. As she has been asked by friends for advice in the care of their own family and seniors, Andy was surprised to find that Elder Care problem solutions are not well socialized or understood. She is very passionate about advocating for elders and sharing/socializing her knowledge, insights, and solutions. And, as Andy has reached the age of “Seniorhood” herself, she wants to celebrate with other “Seniors” the wonderful older people they have become, with emphasis on the joy and beauty that lies ahead! It's easy to dread menopause. Our mother's generation wasn't really allowed to talk abou it, there are all the side effects women complain about, and it can seem like a loss in the sence of your identity changing. But take heart! Tonya Fines is here discussing how to best support our bodies during this transformation. She challenged us to think, "Is this really due to menopause? Or have I changed some habits too?" It's time for you to think about your daiily and weekly activities. What are some small changes you could make ? Yes there is a harmony shift but there are easy ways to be a good partner to your body! Tonya discussed how to best prepare for this next season of life. There are so many advantages to aging and today we're talking extra time, extra money, and acting on today! I was talking to a friend a couple of decades younger than myself and we were talking about what you do once you retire so I thought I'd share the ideas that came from that conversation. Sit? Relax? No, my advice was to start thinking now about what she'd want to do then. If she's anything like me, I want to live till I'm 117 with my wits about me and a healthy body, then she's going to need something to do with all of that time. I suggested starting something today, for tomorrow. We discussed going into business for yourself, real estate, direct sales, and of course about her joining my team for extra cash now and a revenue stream once she retires. I pointed out that extra cash means may not mean you're a millionaire, but you will be rich in experiences, time, and available for more opportunities. "Never Retire", is what you'll hear from Martie Weatherly, founder of Dreams to Action Coaching and my guest for this episode. She's full of inspiration to set an impossible dream and go after it! It's not all downhill once you've reached retirement age. She had been walking with a cane and really thought she'd always be dependent on it. Till she made up her mind that she was going to walk independently some day. And she now walks without a cane. She challenges others to do the same! Martie was a registered nurse for 60 years. When she retired, she focused on her love of coaching and created Dreams to Action Coaching, where she loves helping people with a big vision achieve their dreams. In the last two years, she discovered that other people approaching or being retired are looking for ways to stay healthy and sharp, prevent dementia and contribute their wisdom back to the world, rather than take it easy. Her passion now is to do damage to the idea that aging is a downhill slide and a time to rest. It is a time to make a new bucket list and start doing the things on it, to explore new ideas, to be excited and feel youthful regardless of your age! Looking for solutions to help you stay in your home longer as you age? Matt McGuire has the answers! I loved the point he made to 1. Be proactive and start thinking about and budgeting for the modifications you may want to make. 2. Pay attention to your current behaviors...are you grabbing for certain fixtures in your house to aid you in sitting, standing, or climbing stairs? Those would be areas you want to install something more stable to aid you as you age. As you age, those stairs or climbing over the edge of your tub may start to seem like climbing a mountain. Again start to look around and plan for what will suit you best. Matt pointed out that most people do not inquire because they are afraid of the cost. And yes, after the pandemic prices have gone up but they will continue to over time. So take action now. You may be surprised how many programs are out there to aid you in the cost of these modifications. Ask you local senior center or Matt and his team could suggest programs too. Matt McGuire, along with owner/contractor Mike Duckett are both certified aging-in-place specialists with the National Association of Home Builders and have over 20 years of accessible building experience. Home Mobility Pros is a full-service general contractor specializing in full bathroom remodeling, walk-in showers, walk-in tubs, and many other aspects of interior remodeling. Has someone in your life passed away? Were your friends and family able to support you and have helpful conversations? Or did they say "I know exactly how you feel!" The reality is most people don't know how to talk about death and don't know how to support someone after they have had a loved one pass away. Death is simply one of the chapters of life. Cathy is here to normalize these conversations. She has written 4 books on grief. The reality is that we all experience greif differently and need to be supported differently. Cathy awards an honorary PHDDD (Personally Having Dealt With Death) certificate once you have read her books. They offer suggestions of what to say and what not to say. Cathy pointed out that you cannot pre-grieve but you can pre-plan and her books are how. Cathy Weaver has been Networking full-time since 2008 and since then, has experienced a number of opportunities to share with others some impactful things she has learned. Death and dying and survivorship have been very popular topics when it comes to presentations because few people find this subject comfortable. Cathy wrote a book in 2017 called “He Hit The Clouds Running ….. and never looked back™” which addresses her numerous experiences with the death of loved ones. What to say and what not to say when someone has died is one of the most thought-provoking sections of that presentation. Because we all learn from our own life experiences, Cathy has now released “My Final Footprints™” September 2023, which is a compilation of what to gather and discuss with our loved ones to implement our final wishes, when the time comes. We cannot pre-grieve but we can certainly pre-plan, right? Baby Boomers are Bold not Old! This is the stance Wallis Pattisonn took awhile ago and encourages others to see the same. She brought up so many good points like just because you are done with your career doesn't mean you lose the desire to still be valued. You still have a lot of experience to offer about products and business. You are still bold wanting to do something maybe more fulfilling now. But you don't want to be put in the corner not heard from or seen. Not to mention this bold population is massive, it's our silver economy. There have been marketing categories and a whole new slew of products created just for this population. Like, Wallis pointed out, Virgin cruise lines catering to an older clientele. This portion of our population is starting to redefine retirement. You have created homes, raised children, and are ready for the next thing...in that same home. Wallis encourages everyone to be curious, ask questions, and explore to stay in the know of your world and find a way to continue to contribute. Be bold not old! Wallis Pattisonn is an inspiration for people her age and younger. She is straightforward, quirky, and has an attitude of let's give it a try. She is the founder of Bold Not Old, CEO and editor-in-chief of Empowering Boldness a bi-monthly magazine. Her passion is to encourage those who are 60+ to take their knowledge and experience to the world via the online marketplace. "She's just being grumpy!" this was what Dee would over hear while she was at work, about her. What her co-workers didn't know, was that, Dee was struggling with the pain from endometriosis. She wrestled in her own mind about her behavior, how others felt about her, and the pain! Dee struggled with endometriosis her whole life, even being told because of it she may not conceive. Praise to God she was blessed with two children. Then she was faced with a big decision...was it worth it to stay in pain or have a full hysterectomy and give up her womanhood and the opportunity to have any more children? This would put her in medically induced menopause. After surgery, she continued to toil with the fact that others her age couldn't relate to what she was going through with menopause symptoms and the emotions around the surgery. Listen in on how Dee has used her trauma for healing and holding space for others. She tries to be the person for others that she needed when she was going through this. What do you do when you are facing tough times? Lynne Brown turned to a life coach and she was unimpressed with the advice. "Really?" "Yes, write down 25 things you are grateful for each day and write down your dreams." So for the last 7 years, that's what she has done. She pointed out that you can't plant apple seeds and get oranges. When you focus on the good, you attract good. That is the point of the journaling, what you focus on will become. Did you know only 3% of people write down their dreams and gratitude? "I'm all in!" Lynne said to her friend offering her an opportunity to help small businesses. Although a few months prior, Lynne had said no because she was in the middle of putting on a large event and didn't have the bandwidth. Lynne is thankful she did and is now realizing some of those dreams she'd written down over the last 7 years. One of those dreams was financial freedom, which she does enjoy now. A life settlement transaction may require an extended period to complete and result in higher costs and fees due to their complexity. Policy owners considering the need for cash should consider other less costly alternatives. A life settlement may affect the insured's ability to obtain insurance in the future and the seller's eligibility for certain public assistance programs. When an individual decides to sell their policy, they must provide complete access to their medical history, and other personal information. Client name has been changed to protect confidentiality. The gross offer will be reduced by commissions and expenses related to the sale. Each client's experience varies, and there is no guarantee that a life settlement will generate an offer greater than the current cash surrender value.
Funny isn't it? We think personal growth is a tool to get ahead in business. The reality is as humans we get joy from the growth. We are hard wired to get that pay off for anything we do. It's a little trick the body plays on us. Good and bad. We talked all about this, the fulfillment that comes from pursuing personal growth, motivation, discipline, and accountabililty! Bobby steps in to hold people accountable to their goals as a precision life coach. His immersive approach helps with this reward. Ellie Anbinder's back, from Caregivers-WellBeing, with helpful tips if you are facing a loved one being placed in assisted living or they have passed. Once a loved one is no longer in your house...You have to move on with your life. Ellie realizes those are tough words. She knows what it's like to lose a spouse and she can speak and support others from personal experience. You don't want to be stuck with their clothing, stuck with a room that is not functional, you just don't want to be stuck. Ellie has a three bag system she uses to help caregivers to take back their life. She offered a few nuggets of ways to have peace over the process and what the process is exactly! Ellie Anbinder has always had an inquisitive and questioning part to her DNA; she always asks questions about the “non-obvious” in life and as she has lived her life, has had multiple careers which centered around asking the hard questions and working toward answers to those questions. Ellie became the frontline caregiver for her husband who was suffering from Alzheimer's. She noticed and lived through the loneliness and isolation of being a caregiver and started a consulting practice which provides a safe place for caregivers to discuss their questions and find resources to navigate through the difficult dementia process which affects not just the health of the patient but impacts the caregiver dramatically. CareGivers-WellBeing is this new mission. To Connect with Ellie Anbinder: 508-380-2042 or eleanorfa15@gmail.com You need to take care of yourself as a caregiver! Such a tough call when to call it quits in a relationship. Timothy Sweets cautioned that if you have to ask if it's over...it's not. When it's over you can feel like a fool. Or sometimes we make foolish decisions because we are blinded by love. Timothy has seen it all through the years of his career as a divorce attorney. On the morning of this interview, he met with previous clients. These clients had been divorced from his services. They got remarried and had another child together. But this morning, he was seeing them to help with their second divorce! Makes you wonder how much money they could have saved by trying to work through things the first time. Unfortunately, Timothy has a lot of business waiting for him. His advice was to think of what you can't live without and then go to court with those non-negotiables. This will save time and money and alot less billable hours!! And whatever you do cherish your children and realize they are here because of the love you once had with your spouse. "You are not allowed to hate your ex-spouse more than you love your child" from one of the judges in the RI family court. "I can not get motivated to get to the gym"...tell us Jennifer Prell, how does someone combat that feeling or thought? Jennifer, President and founder of Elderwerks and encouraged everyone with all the benefits and different types of ways to move your body. She stressed that our muscles are like rubber bands and if you don't use them you will lose them. She was up to almost an hour on the rowing machine only to move to a new place, not get back into the routine, and now she's back to 10 minutes at a time. But she will keep working on it and build those muscles. The good news is you can always improve your muscular abilities. Start with baby steps and work your way to longer amounts of time or more repetitions. At Elderwerks, they offer virtual classes for older adults to take advantage of to get moving. There are simple things you can do at home too that Jennifer mentioned in the event you don't go out much or are home-bound or bedridden. See, you don't have to hit the gym to stay fit! Diane Gilman was stuck in a false belief. She calls it reverse sexism where she thought she needed a man. She relied on a man to"bring home the bacon." Until one day she had a light bulb moment and realized she could make things happen for herself. She regrets all the time she spent waiting for a man to make things happen. Diane now encourages women to age differently by being an example. Diane created a very successful business out of something missing in the market even when others said "That's a bad idea, older women don't wanna wear jeans." She no longer waits for a man. A fashion rule-breaker with millions of fans, the charismatic pearl-haired, “Queen of Jeans,” Diane Gilman is 77 years young. An inspiration for women embracing their third act, Diane is a tele-retailing legend who's just getting started, and not uncommonly, recognition for Diane came later in life with the launch of DG2 Jeans on HSN. Did you know that when hormone replacement therapy, for menopause, had terrible outcomes, they stopped teaching the practice to our physicians? There's about a decade where they didn't teach it and didn't discuss it. Therefore your physician may not know current or best practices. Women can't forget about it so why did doctors get to? What happens in the third act and what is the third act? Think of your passion or what you enjoy. How great would it be to use it to your advantage? Jackie Carroll, our virtual reality " Mind Immersion" creator, is back to encourage you! She shared a sweet story about her father and children utilizing virtual reality. You see Jackie preloaded locations into her father's VR set so that he didn't get overwhelmed with the technology of it. Then her children were able to meet her father in those spaces with headsets and they could explore together. During Covid, it was tough because many people were isolated and it was easy to experience depression. However, with a little technology, it was easier than ever to stay connected and make memories. They felt like they were in person! It's so easy to trick the brain. Jackie has seen elder populations have their spirits rise when using virtual reality to meditate, visit places from their childhood, OR travel to somewhere they have always wanted to go but may not be able to travel easily anymore. Jackie Carroll, the founder of Mind Immersion, is here explaining virtual reality and how to use it to your benefit for personal development! She also touched on virtual reality vs. the MetaVerse. We all know meditation is a great tool for accomplishing your goals. But what if you have too much chaos around you? No problem. Slip on your VR headset and get ready to meditate where ever you choose. Imagine asking a genie to take you somewhere you find most relaxing to meditate. But what if you have a hard time imagining things? Again, no problem. Jackie offered open-eye meditation as a solution. You can put on your headset and choose to keep your eyes open or closed. You ultimately want your brain to buy that you were there. So whichever way is most effective for that is best. You see once your brain has seen it, it believes it whether you were really there or virtually. There is a lot of research that supports this practice. Listen to the full episode to learn how you too can use virtual reality to your benefit! A published author and entrepreneur with a diverse background in film, business, and sales, Jackie Carroll is a natural-born connector who loves building incredible teams capable of launching and growing successful companies. Her most recent project is a new venture offering immersive employee engagement experiences in virtual reality (VR)—designed specifically to help people live their best lives! She hosts her own podcast, Finding Your Genie and speaks at conferences and events all over the world. Megan Reyes is my guest - curator of The (Mostly) Managed Mommy Facebook group where moms can have vulnerable conversations about the daily trials in the trenches of motherhood. Megan encourages mamas to know who they are and set an example for our children for future generations. "Give It a Rest" is what Matty tells his clients. Matty encourages his clients to try intermittent fasting. He is a Scientist and Nutritionist and has a good understanding of the body. A lot of how our bodies work relates back to primal times. You have heard all about the brain keeping us safe from danger, like being attacked by a lion? Well, our bodies also are primal in the sense that you need to give your body a break from digesting food so it can regenerate the rest of the body. If you are eating all the time, and Matty said based on a study he read, the average American eats 6-11 times a day, and you are never giving your body a break from digestion. All that energy could be used to repair other parts of the body or just more easily perform normal bodily functions. I asked Matty about women vs. men with intermittent fasting and he explained that it is in fact different due to our monthly cycle. Matty shared so much information and there's so much to learn from this episode!
