'Hart op de tong' is a series of talks in Dutch. When you see this title or this picture, you'll know that it's a Dutch Episode. The shift we've seen in recent years in regards to conscious consumerism and sustainability is encouraging - even some of the largest and historically wasteful retailers are coming to understand that if they want to survive into the future that they need to take a good, hard look at the way they operate and how they relate to their customer base. The ecological issues confronting us can seem insurmountable at times, but as business owners big and small, we can all play a part in shifting the dial back into the green In episode 88 of The Resilient Retail Game Plan, I speak to “Mary Queen of Shops”, the esteemed retail consultant and broadcaster herself, Mary Portas! Author of ‘Work Like a Woman' and ‘Rebuild', we spend today's episode discussing how to thrive in the Kindness Economy and about taking the first steps toward small business sustainability. And if that wasn't enough I also got in touch with Nicky Chenery, the general manager of Safety Culture, a cutting-edge operations platform that aims to empower front line workers through auditing and micro-learning tools. We talk about harnessing data and using insights to reduce waste, streamline processes and help take responsibility for our business practices. In today's podcast, we cover a wide range of subjects, from rethinking the relationships we have with our suppliers, to building positive micro habits into our day-to-day operations. We also discuss how customers don't just want to buy from brands - they want to buy into them, why we ultimately need to rethink the concept of growth and how if we really want to change the world, we just need to start where we are. Welcome to another episode of the DNA Of Purpose Podcast. In today's episode, we are going to be deep-diving into one world-changing question, and that question is simply this: What would be possible in the world if we all made the decision to embrace kindness? That might be radical and grand acts of kindness, but even more significantly small acts of kindness. The simple things that come together to create waves of compassion, connectivity, and care. A wave that binds us in our humanity and innate desire to belong.Anna Sheppard is the founder and CEO of Bambuddha Group. Bambuddha is a network for dedicated learners who want to make an exceptional impact through leadership in business. She is an old hand when it comes to showing the big fish how to give back, and do well while doing so.
Mary Portas loves business. Fundamentally, she lives and breathes it. What she loves best about it is making businesses work. But in this week's podcast, she argues that we've been doing it wrong. In 2021, it's not only possible to build healthy businesses that do less bad and add more good – it's a commercial imperative. Rampant consumerism has been driving the economic machine and we have put the pursuit of profit above all else. Over the past thirty years the business of what we buy has been dominated by the biggest, fastest and cheapest. But those values no longer resonate. We've come to realize that more doesn't equal better. How we live, buy and sell is changing. The post-pandemic era is all about care, respect and understanding the implications of what we're doing. This 'Kindness Economy' is a new value system where in order to thrive businesses must understand the fundamental role they play in the fabric of our lives. They need to add, not just grow, balancing commerce with social progress. Because we don't just want to buy from brands - we want to buy into them. Learn more about your ad choices. John Schoolcraft's LinkedIn profile lists everything from dishwashing to shop assistant, DJ to Alice Cooper's security guard among his previous jobs. But there's one that he will forever be synonymous with: global chief creative officer at Oatly. Along with CEO Toni Petersson, John has transformed the unknown Swedish alt-milk brand into a global superstar with sales of $421 million in 2020. At the core of this challenger brand however are three values Oatly remains razor-focused on: nutritional health, sustainability and transparency. But how, in a world so packed with products and messaging, did John create the kind of global impact that Oatly has achieved? And now that it's got so huge, how does Oatly protect itself from accusations of selling out? Can big really be kind? Mary finds out. We're doing our bit, we're buying green energy right? Not always. In fact, a third of the energy that's marketed as renewable is in fact greenwashed by companies using loopholes in legislation. Juliet Davenport set up Good Energy in 1999, the UK's first 100% renewable electricity supplier. Today the company produces its own electricity, generated in Britain from sun, wind, water and bioenergy, on their own solar and wind farms – as well as a network of 1600 renewable generators. In this episode, Mary talks to Juliet about how she started her own energy company, really buying green and how we as consumers can wisely choose who we buy from. Anna Blackburn is the first non-family member to run the jeweller Beaverbrooks. She's also its first female managing director. And she's more than doubled profits since she took the helm of the business. Anna has done this by building on a foundation already in place at Beaverbrooks which has always invested in its people. But taking this ethos a step further has allowed her to prove that The Kindness Economy betters the bottom line. As one of the few non-owner interviewees that Mary has had on the podcast, it's a great insight into the change someone can create in a business they didn't start themselves. Sheep Inc is a new kind of fashion brand and its knitwear leaves behind zero emissions, zero harm and zero waste. The attention to detail needed to create this kind of accountability is staggering - involving everything from sourcing wool from regenerative farms to solar-powered knitting machines. Even the sheep that produce the company's wool are fed food that makes them burp less – and produce less methane. Sheep Inc is also a radically transparent brand and you can access entire provenance of your jumper by just scanning its tag. The frozen food brand Cook is a true family business. Co-founder Edward Perry was inspired by his parents' frozen cake company to set up Cook and then joined in the business by brother James and sister Rosie, who's now co-CEO. An early B Corps, Cook has donated two million meals to children living in some of the most poverty-stricken areas of the world and gave away more than 200000 meals to the needy during Covid. Thanks to initiatives to employ ex-offenders, a profit share and the living wage, they've also consistently been voted one of the Sunday Times' top 100 businesses. But the company has faced some tough times financially too and Rosie tells Mary about how vital it was to stick their core values during them. They also discuss how food has taken centre stage over the past year - from panic buying to eating at home again (and again) - and how the wider food industry has made some big steps in recent years with increased organic production and a focus on reducing waste and plastic, but there's still a lot to be done. The Kindness Economy returns this Thursday. Follow us now!
Hello! How can we ensure everyone has access to the essentials for a decent life? A coalition of campaigners argue we need a new ‘Social Guarantee' based on three pillars: living wage jobs, universal public services, and fixing our safety net with a living income. We talk through the idea and how to make it happen with Social Guarantee expert Maeve Cohen who tells us about the thinking behind the concept, leader of Camden Council Georgia Gould who is piloting new universal services and the New Economics Foundation's Sarah Arnold who talks through the idea of a living income.Plus Mary Portas tells us about the rise of the Kindness Economy and gives her expert opinion on Ed's sandwich shop proposal. Ed's book ‘Go Big' is out now in hardback, ebook and audiobook: https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/1119347/go-big/9781847926241.html See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Mary Portas delivered dressing downs to shopkeepers all over the UK. She also worked as a retail tzar for David Cameron's Government. Most recently with the Portas Agency she's become a champion of the kindness economy and she's published a new book called Rebuild: How to Thrive in the new Kindness Economy.
My guest this week is Mary Portas. You may know Mary from the high street, from business, or you may know her as the red bob, hard exterior business woman from the TV. In this conversation today I saw a very different one to the one I've seen in the media. Mary Portas is an English retail consultant and broadcaster, known for her retail and business-related television shows, founding her creative agency Portas and her appointment by David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, to lead a review into the future of Britain's high streets. She's worked in various retail roles: John Lewis and Harrods, Topshop. Then creative director at Harvey Nichols – which was her rise to fame. In 1997 launched an agency called Yellow Door producing campaigns for clients including Clarks, Louis Vuitton, Oasis Stores, Swarovski, Dunhill, Boden, Thomas Pink, Patek Philippe and Mercedes-Benz, Sainsbury's, Habitat, Westfield, Liberty and The Body Shop. In 2013 she re-launched her agency as Portas Agency Ltd. Today, Portas Agency advises retail clients from every continent, and the businesses success is built on an obsessive understanding of human and cultural behaviour. Today she'll talk about an idea thats fairly radical to some people, especially people that are building or have built big businesses which is based on her new book ‘Rebuild: How to thrive in the new Kindness Economy'.This conversation incredible, Mary is hilarious, she is smart and she is kind. On top of all that her brutal honesty blew me away which is a central part of what we spoke about, the idea of being true to yourself or facing the inevitable of ending up in disappear. Mary's been a public figure, a media star, she's faced public scrutiny but through it all she's emerged as this levelled headed, down to earth, warm hearted individual. I laughed, I realised and I was deeply inspired and you will be too. This weeks topics: Your early years Your most painful moments Remote working Losing myself in the madness Labelling your sexuality Listing to your intuition Advice for the younger generation So you don't get excited either? Kate Raworth calls herself a rebel economist and it’s true. Now a Senior Research Associate at Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute, she was in fact switched off economics at university because it didn’t answer the questions she cared about like protecting the environment and challenging inequality. Luckily, she later reconnected with the topic and her 2017 book ‘Doughnut Economics’ has been published in 18 languages. She talks to Mary about the key principles. Plus, Mary talks to one of the Portas team about The Kindness Economy in action... looking at businesses this week that are making a difference. Today I'm talking with Rebecca D. Davidson. She is the Founder and CEO of GeboCall, a recent tech startup designed to address one of society's most pressing problems - Loneliness. Rebecca's primary career is as a Mortgage Lender. She bills herself as a MindfulMoneyMojo Lifestyle Mentor and as a Life-stage Lender providing high-quality home finance to individuals and families at all stages of their financial lives. The intimacy of financial conversations with consumers and an understanding of grief and loss are the inspiration for GeboCall, a deep presence-based listening, and connection modality. GeboCall was in development over a 14-month span that also included two company changes for her mortgage practice, moving house, the loss of 4 pets and the end of her 16-year relationship. Rebecca is no stranger to adversity and loneliness and is determined to help one individual at a time feel more connected, more deeply seen and heard, and to provide a living wage supplementary income to the GeboCall Advocates who hold space for genuine conversation. Rebecca desires to create a financial and emotional tipping point that raises humanity up from despair into a resilient state of connectedness.
