Welcome to The Georgia Politics Podcast. On today's episode, Sen. Shawn Still joins us to help us pay our respects to Bruce Thompson, Georgia's Labor Commissioner, who passed away on November 24th at the age of 59. Known for his tireless dedication to public service, Thompson's career was marked by a passion for empowering Georgians through innovative labor policies and economic opportunity. Thompson built a legacy as a successful entrepreneur and small business owner, excelling in the insurance and financial services industries. His business acumen laid the foundation for his public service, as he sought to improve the lives of Georgia's workers and employers alike. Thompson was first elected to the Georgia State Senate in 2013, representing the 14th District, where he served for a decade before being elected Labor Commissioner in 2022. During his tenure, he championed efforts to modernize the Georgia Department of Labor, streamline unemployment services, and promote workforce training programs to address the evolving needs of the state's economy. Beyond his professional achievements, Thompson was a devoted family man and community leader, deeply involved in civic and charitable initiatives. He is survived by his wife, Becky, his children, Faith and Max, his adopted father, Dr. Austin Flint, his brother, Jason Sluggett, and his sister, Tonya Bruce. His legacy of service, innovation, and compassion will long be remembered by those whose lives he touched. On this week's episode, host Tim Boyum pulls back the curtain on the world of campaign fundraising. Thompson was part of Hillary Clinton's national fundraising committee and has played a prominent role in North Carolina campaigns for decades. He explains the common misconceptions surrounding fundraising and the thought that money drives candidate decision making. He added that a big downside to fundraising isn't the amount of money, but the lack of transparency of who is donating.

That's when our Declaration of Independence was ratified by the Second Continental Congress establishing the United States of America as an independent country. The fight against tyranny is never complete. That was the lesson of January 6th in our country when a failed former president tried to usurp control of our country. Fortunately, he was defeated by law - abiding, just Americans. The threat is still here. So this week, we're celebrating Independence Day with Celtic music. The Celts also know what it means to be oppressed by tyrants. We have a whole slew of songs on the topic. Today, we're gonna share a small sampling of songs of independence and freedom by Celtic musicians. It's also officially Plastic Free July. You can help break free from the single - use plastic problem by refusing them in the month of July so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities. Will you be part of the solution this month? If you are a Celtic musician or in a Celtic band, then please submit your band to be played on the podcast. You don't have to send in music or an EPK. What a story this is! Born into an intensely homophobic and misogynist cult, Joey Green comes to the realization that she is a lesbian – and to make a bad situation worse, her father is an outspoken anti-gay activist. Joey was on episode 93 as anonymous and came back as herself to fill in many parts of her story she wasn't able to fill in before. One of those stories along with many others is alcohol in water bottles at school! Growing up in the isolationist Plymouth Brethren Christian Church cult, where women are treated as inferiors and homosexuality is actively hated, a young girl overcomes all these barriers to become the happy and confident non-binary personality that we see and hear on this podcast – a sparkling witness to the transformation that takes place when a person breaks free and can live their true identity. We then take a look at Myles and Lee Admiraal, prominent and extremely wealthy PBCC business owners who have a dark history of homophobic hatred and harassment, leading to a damning court case in Montreal. This revealing court case really shows how these children take the leaders hatred and then act them out in society. Ben discusses a horrifying field trip that also ended in physical hatred towards the LGBTQ community. To finish off, we have Bruce Thompson' performing his latest song “Top of the Tree” a reflection on the wealth and power of the Exclusive Brethren's “Man of God”. Bruce's music is really resonating and bringing solace to many ex-members. All links to articles, court cases and Bruce's music in the description below. In a press release on Thursday, August 13, 2023, Thompson announced an internal investigation uncovered $105,170,178.20 in unremitted funds that began accumulating in fiscal year 2014 during the tenure of former Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. These funds were a combination of Administrative Assessment fees ($20,829,614.53), Employer Penalties ($63,139, 053.96), and Interest fees ($21,201,509.71) that were never remitted to the Georgia State Treasury. As required by law, Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson authorized the full transfer of these funds, which totaled $105,170,178.20, to the treasury on August 3, 2023. Commissioner Bruce Thompson immediately began a sweeping overhaul of the department after assuming office in January 2023, identifying deficiencies and weaknesses that tarnished the agency's reputation. Part of this initiative included a comprehensive exploration of GDOL's fraud and unemployment insurance system vulnerabilities aimed at rebuilding confidence and ushering in a new era of credibility at the department. This investigation led to the discovery of millions in unremitted funds, further underscoring Commissioner Thompson's commitment to investigating and resolving these inefficiencies – leaving no room for fraud or deceitful activity. Thursday's landmark announcement marks a significant step toward restoring accountability and transparency at the Georgia Department of Labor under the leadership of Commissioner Bruce Thompson. The ongoing investigation into the alleged fraudulent activities remains exhaustive as state and federal authorities work to address the implications associated with these findings. Updates will be provided as new developments unfold. Take a moment to rate and review the show and then share the episode on social media. The Cherokee County School District confirmed that the call was incorrect and stated that safety is a priority. During the lockdown, the school's interior and exterior doors were locked, and students remained in their classrooms. The district assured families that they take safety threats seriously and encourage reporting through their Vector Alert system, which accepts reports anonymously. The incident led to a delay in bus dismissal and a Code Yellow lockdown for the Liberty Elementary After School Program. ....……… Read more on this story at tribuneledgernews.com STORY 2: audit An internal audit by the Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) revealed that over $105 million in penalties, fees, and assessments collected over the past decade were withheld from the state treasury. The funds, relating to administrative fees, interest fees, and employer penalties, were transferred to the treasury as required by law. These funds had been withheld during the tenure of former Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. The audit, dated August 4, does not accuse the GDOL of fraudulent activity but points to a legal dispute over the agency's right to retain the money. The audit emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability. State and federal agencies are involved in an ongoing investigation into the matter. The current Labor Commissioner, Bruce Thompson, aims to restore transparency and cooperation within the agency. Story 3: dates Cherokee County cities have announced qualifying dates for the upcoming municipal elections on November 7. Canton, Woodstock, and Waleska are among the cities with seats set to expire. This recognition highlights successful collaborations between local PTAs and schools to enhance family engagement and support students. These schools are among only 302 nationwide and 29 in Georgia to receive this two-year title. The award emphasizes the crucial role of parent engagement in student success. The schools' efforts over the past year, driven by PTAs and school leadership, have earned them this prestigious recognition. Back with more after this Commercial: Dayco – Ingles 7 - Heller Story 7: Tort Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced his intention to advocate for tort reform in the upcoming session of the General Assembly. Speaking at the Georgia Chamber of Commerce's annual Congressional Luncheon, Kemp highlighted the need to address laws that facilitate frivolous lawsuits against businesses in the state, leading to increased insurance costs and hindering job creation. While proponents, including insurance companies and business groups, have supported tort reform for years, opponents, such as trial lawyers and legislative Democrats, argue that proposed legislation favors insurers over victims of accidents and malpractice. Kemp plans to work with lawmakers to reduce insurance premiums and create a fairer legal environment in the 2024 legislative session. Story 8: Waters The Kansas City Royals dominated the Boston Red Sox with a 9-3 victory at Fenway Park. The Royals' offense was strong, collecting 15 hits, including home runs from Etowah Alum Drew Waters, MJ Melendez, and Michael Massey. Waters went 3 for 5 with two RBIs, and several Royals players recorded multiple hits. Starting pitcher Brady Singer threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs and five hits while striking out the Red Sox batters. Adam Duvall hit a solo home run for the Red Sox, but their offense was relatively quiet. The Royals improved their season record to 37-78, with Waters' notable performance including a two-run homer. Water started slowly this season and battled some nagging injuries, but has heated up of late. Story 9: Ranked Two-time defending national champions, the Georgia Bulldogs, have secured the top spot in the 2023 preseason coaches poll, receiving 61 out of 66 first-place votes. The Bulldogs are set to kick off their season against Tennessee-Martin. Michigan ranks second, its highest preseason ranking in the coaches poll's history. Alabama takes the third spot, followed by Ohio State at fourth. LSU claims the fifth position, making the SEC responsible for three of the top five slots. The Big Ten has three teams in the top 10, with a total of four in the top 25. The Pac-12 also has representation in the poll with five teams. On this episode of the Lessons Learned for Vets podcast, we have the privilege of speaking with Bruce Thompson. In the military transition space, Bruce is one of the most prolific veteran advocates and volunteers. Retiring from the Marine Corps 7 years ago, Bruce is now the Executive Director of The ASCEND Collective, the nonprofit arm of Talents ASCEND. This organization not only works with underserved communities to help them become employment ready, but it also partners with employers to educate them on the benefits of hiring these individuals. As an advocate for mental health awareness, he is open with his own struggles. Tune in to hear how Bruce has found success in an unconventional post military career.Bruce Thompson's retirement came earlier than he had expected due to medical challenges. Having his identity wrapped up in the uniform and his physical fitness, the transition did not come easy. He was no longer an active duty marine or the stellar athlete that he once was. Bruce left his first job after just 4 weeks because he wasn't mentally prepared for life outside of the military. For the next 6 weeks, Bruce did not leave the house and fell into a depression. With the help and support of his wife, he applied for 3 positions in the transition space and sought help for his PTSD, depression and anxiety. Shortly thereafter, he accepted a teaching position as an employment workshop facilitator for the Department of Labor. Volunteerism has been a very important part of Bruce's career path and personal growth. He believes that strategic volunteering can be a segue to employment opportunities. Volunteering strengthens your ties to the community and is a way to give back. It also has a positive impact on your emotional well-being. Most of Bruce's employment opportunities post military came about through networking. He credits LinkedIn for his networking success and encourages people to learn how to strategically build a profile to meet their goals. The first question a person needs to ask themself is, “What story do I want to tell through LinkedIn?” Next, a person needs to think through what kind of posted content is best to support their story. Networking events, whether in-person or virtual, should support one's goals. People need to understand who they are, where they are and where they would like to be to make the best decisions. Bruce Thompson is open about his battle with PTSD, anxiety and depression. After working with three or four counselors through the VA, he found one that he feels comfortable sharing his struggles. Bruce wants to blow the door off the stigma surrounding mental health. There are resources on top of resources, but they are only effective if the person is willing to ask for help. People want to be heard and people want to know that someone cares. Subscribe to our YouTube channel at https://tinyurl.com/llforvets22. Today Ben is heading across the Irish Sea to speak to Irish dairy farmer Bruce Thompson who milks 300 cows at the foot of the Slieve Blooms in the heart of the island of Ireland. Over time the farm has shifted towards dairy but it used to be more of a mixed farm with sheep, beef and dairy enterprises. Bruce has always worked in agriculture although he has a diploma in automobile engineering and is currently studying for a diploma in sustainability. He's probably best known in regen ag circles in the UK for his role in the dung beetles for farmers project along with Sally Ann Spence and Claire Whittle. This was the subject for his Nuffield scholarship in 2020 titled “Anthelmintic resistance control measures incorporating pastoral management and dung beetles to increase biodiversity?” About BenBen Eagle is the founder and Head of Podcasts at RuralPod Media, a specialist rural podcast production agency. Today's bonus episode is my sit-down conversation with Georgia State Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson. Bruce has been a long-time, successful businessman and entrepreneur who decided to get into local politics years ago. As a state senator for Georgia during the Covid outbreak, he found many of his constituents were reaching out to address problems and concerns with the DOL. After working to look for a possible candidate, it seemed he was ignoring his own calling to run for that office. Having knowledge of both private industry and the public sector, made him a unique candidate for the position. It was a pleasure to spend time with Bruce as he recounts his past experiences, his current challenges and his future goals. He truly wants to transform the department to make it more efficient, more secure and more customer-focus driven. He is creating a culture of openness and cooperation, where value is placed on the individual and on the mission of the Department of Labor. Thompson shares a few stories from his first days in the role to where he is now at the midway point of his first 100 days in office. He plans to check back with us and the people of Georgia soon after for a status check. He knows he has multiple priorities, each equal to the other, which provides it's own challenges. Ideally, if he can successfully change the culture within the DOL, he believes they will become one of the most efficient and production Department's of Labor in the nation.
