Together we explore the transformative power of art and how spirituality plays a crucial role in their practice.------------------For over five years, the Hilma's Ghost  has conducted experimental pedagogy, transcultural dialogue, and collectivity through the lens of feminism and spirituality to build community and reckon with patriarchal art histories that have excluded women, trans, and nonbinary practitioners. Hilma's Ghost collaborated artistically on ABSTRACT FUTURES TAROT, consisting of 5 paintings, 78 drawings, and an original limited-edition tarot deck that was exhibited at The Armory Show 2021. The exhibition was shortlisted as one of the exhibitions to see by Will Heinrich at The New York Times. In this episode, I have an enlightening conversation with artist Carla Falb, who shares her unique journey through art, spirituality, and personal growth. We explore the profound influence her father's role as a Methodist minister had on her early understanding of mysticism and creativity, and how these experiences shaped her artistic vision.-----------------------------Since 2002, Carla Falb has been creating paintings of roller coasters from images she captures on her GoPro while riding in the front car. Facing the initial fear and the adrenaline rush of the ride is infused into her work – like a 21st century J.M.W. Turner tied to the mast of a ship witnessing a storm at sea. To the casual viewer, her series depicts mere amusements, yet her underlying intention is that the roller coasters symbolize our experience in this life, with all its peaks and valleys. After the death of her mother on Christmas in 2016, her emphasis shifted to nighttime imagery with light bursting through the darkness. For Falb, the light in her paintings represents our divine sparks or higher selves, connected to one another in a universal field of consciousness. Carla Falb was raised in Philadelphia and spent her summers at the Jersey Shore.  She was very close to her father, a Methodist minister, who shared his interest in mysticism with her, as well as his quirky sense of humor, love of art, music, dancing, and amusement parks! Falb received a B.F.A. from the Philadelphia College of Art and a Certificate in Painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1983.  During that time, after learning traditional drawing and painting techniques, she created paintings based on imagery from her dreams and visions. Twenty years later, Falb returned to Philadelphia and attended the University of the Arts for her M.F.A. where she began painting roller coaster structures.  In addition to her painting practice, Falb has taught art full time since 1987. She received a Dodge Foundation Fellowship for Artists/Educators that funded her travel to Southern California in 2009 to record source imagery for her Roller Coaster Series.  During her visit, Falb fell in love with the area, and relocated to Orange County in 2017 where she is currently a tenured professor at Fullerton College.  Exhibition highlights include solo exhibits at the Billis Williams Gallery in Los Angeles, where she is represented, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts' Alumni Gallery. Her work was also featured in exhibits at the Preston Contemporary Art Center in New Mexico, and at the Noyes Museum of Art in New Jersey.  The Fellowship of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts recently commissioned and acquired one of her HangTime paintings, which feature the light streams of a roller coaster captured on a nighttime helicopter ride.  Discover more about Carla and her work:Carla's WebsiteCarla's InstagramFollow Martin Benson for more insights:*To stay updated on the podcast and related content, check out my Instagram*To support the show and access exclusive content, consider subscribing for $0.99/month on Instagram (link above).Credits: Special thanks to Matthew Blankenship of The Sometimes Island for our podcast theme music!Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/martin-l-benson/support

DNA evidence is often seen as the gold standard in criminal investigations—a scientific fingerprint that can definitively prove guilt or innocence. But what happens when the science behind it is mishandled or manipulated? In this episode of PRETEND, we explore two shocking cases: the Garrett Coughlin triple homicide and the wrongful conviction of Josiah Sutton. Both cases reveal how sloppy forensic work and unethical practices can set guilty criminals free and, worse, imprison innocent people. Through interviews with victims' families, experts, and journalists, we unravel the myth of DNA as infallible evidence and expose the devastating consequences of a broken system. Featuring insights from Kathy Eppler and a special contribution from Celisia Stanton of the Truer Crime Podcast, this episode serves as a sobering reminder: DNA is only as reliable as the people interpreting it. In brief: We're shooting for all future gameplay episodes to be roughly an hour long. We've got some one-shots and miniseries games planned before we jump into the next campaign. Our release schedule is going to change, but we want to be more consistent. To elaborate on the planned release schedule: Ongoing series episodes (oneshots, miniseries, and even campaigns) will release every week, but we will take a week off publishing episodes as we switch between different games. Other breaks will be announced on the podcast feed, but may include holiday breaks or breaks at the conclusion of a season. If you have a game you'd like to see us play, let us know. When does something begin? It might seem like an innocuous question, but, as the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely makes us realise, it only is innocuous to those who believe that things can ever be truly finished and then begin anew. In this episode, Ödere wonders what it means to take the idea seriously that nothing is ever complete, and that everything is perpetually, if imperceptibly, changing. And also how it’s possible that there can be uncertainty about whether Tinguely at one point dropped 150.000 thousand pieces of paper over Düsseldorf. | Credits: Special thanks to Julia Bachmann who can be heard playing the bodhrán in the third segment of the episode. The opera heard in the final segment was downloaded from musopen.org, a wonderful non-profit project providing free access to classical music recordings. The thunderstorm in the same segment was recorded by Blue Delta and can be found at freesound.org/people/BlueDelta/. Finally, we thank our friends Alain, Amelia, C.B. Don, and Tara and Esmé for their voices.

How To Lead Your Team through Change with Sue Huff

Have you experienced a merger or been through an acquisition? Today it is becoming more and more commonplace for organizations to go through transformational change.  Sue Huff, Director, Global Conventions at Medtronic, Inc. shares in this interview strategies that she implemented during the merger with Medtronic and Covidien to bring together two large teams and how they formed a strong collaborating organization including developing new processes and best practices for their department.   9 Strategies to Manage Transformational Change during Mergers and Acquisitions Meet Face-to-Face Quickly. When a merger happens, one of the best ways to create trust and collaboration is for everyone to get together in person.  Sue’s team met within 2 weeks of the merger and it helped everyone get to know each other. Evaluate Current Processes. Take the best of the best from all of the processes and learn from each other.  Discover what is already being done well within both organizations. Communicate Effectively While Working Remote. Medtronic offers flexible work spaces and allows all the convention team members to work remote.  The team uses Zoom video platform to see each other in person. Create A Process Task Force. Sue’s team members each aligned themselves with one of 15 process groups.  Each group included legacy Medtronic people and new Covidien members. Celebrate Success. After the teams developed their core processes together they created a presentation that was shared with leadership highlighting all of their accomplishments together. Increasing Team Size Requires Clear Expectations. Each time a team member is added, Sue clearly communicates the requirements and how as a group they are held to a high performance level. Share Your Leadership Philosophy. Sue provides examples of how to avoid surprises and learn from mistakes.  When situations happen, communicate early on so that adjustments can be made to processes to avoid a similar issue in the future. Encourage Team to Volunteer. One of the fastest ways to build skills and manage your personal situation during a merger and acquisition is being part of an organization that can offer support and build career tool box. Elevate yourself to be around people you aspire to be with in organizations and associations.  Join an association like HCEA (Healthcare Convention and Exhibitor Association) to find like-minded people. Best Practice Power Tip: “Take time to re-enter when you get home.  You have to have downtime and take a “road day” when you return from being gone" -Sue Huff. If you have questions about this topic and want to learn more, check out the HCEA Series at www.rockyourtradeshow.com/hcea and if you want help navigating change-reach out to me, I love hearing from you! Internet porn. We’ve all seen it. It’s popular and loved. And yet, for fairly obvious reasons, it’s also reviled for its misogyny, as something that perpetuates cycles of violence against women. In this episode, we wade into the murky waters of sexual fantasy. In part one, we hear from a sociologist who went into men's homes and watched their porn. In part two, we try a different approach - we hear from porn users themselves. In this electronic opera, porn users interact with pundits and music in an amalgam of sounds composed to form a larger conversation about porn.
