Welcome to another iteration of the Monday Breakfast show. This week's episode is structured a little differently due to the station's Radiothon fundraiser, so we're focussed on highlighting the great, radical and independent content 3CR broadcasts. If you enjoy the content heard on both the Monday Breakfast show or at 3CR more broadly, please make a donation to help keep the station on-air for another year. You can donate online here or alternatively call 9419 8377. You can nominate a show of your choosing (ie the Monday Breakfast show) when doing so. 3CR needs to raise $275,000, with each show tasked with its own goal, for the Monday Breakfast show it's $1000. Any donation over $2 is tax-deductible and is much appreciated. This week we hear: Rob speaks with Jackie Turner, Trans activist and founder of the Trans Justice Project about how Trans people are spoken about in the media across so-called Australia, as well as updates on the Trans Justice Project, the importance of solidarity and community within the Trans/LGBTQIA+ Community. Following that we hear a segment from the 18th of March in which Rob spoke to Damien O'Meara about representation of LGBTQI+ people on TV screens and how it's changed since the 1970s. The interview is based on a study published in Sage Journals which revealed the much-needed data surrounding Queer representation within scripted television across so-called Australia over the past two decades. During the interview, Rob dissected the study and the trends it uncovered with one of the study's authors, Damien O'Meara, who is a television production culture researcher completing his PhD at Swinburne University of Technology. His research investigates the influence of production culture processes on gender and sexually diverse representations in Australian scripted television. The interview mentions an article from The Conversation about the study. You can listen to the full conversation here.Next up Rob is joined by Harry, the General Secretary of the Renters and Housing Union. The pair spoke about the fight for housing justice, the portrayal of the housing crisis within the media, and how 3CR platforms diverse voices that are so often missed elsewhere in the media. If you are interested in joining RAHU, click here. The show ends with a segment from the January 29th show in which Rob interviewed Sophie, a legal observer from Melbourne Activist Legal Support about excessive use of force by the police at the Webb Dock Picket. After several days of picketing the Webb Dock to stop a Zim container ship in solidarity with Palestine, the picket was broken up by police using pepper spray and other coercive methods. The Melbourne Activist Legal Support's full statement of concern can be found on their website. When trans and queer people obtain anything at all, like perhaps representation in media in the "League of Their Own" show, even those cishet folks who like to think of themselves as allies can push back. Love is in the air, and revenge is ready to catch a ride as we talk HBO's “Twilight Zone with boobs” - THE HITCHHIKER! This particular episode of the series was brought to us by the director of the Salem Horror Fest (and Returning Champion), Kay Lynch because it does the impossible: make anyone care about a character in this paper-thin anthology series!! Along the way, we dig into why this TV episode from 1983 has a more nuanced examination of the trans experience than we've seen from a lot of media in the last 40 years as we cringe at bra slicing, examine Robert Vaughn's toupee, crossover with Mission Impossible, worship at the alter of Sybil Danning, and take up the scalpel with the liquor shakes!! All this, plus we visit exotic Airport Bar, cut up our usual Choose Your Own Deathventure game, and change how you'll look at pizza for a while!! A whole lot of people like to think of themselves as trans allies, but the second they have to do something that makes them uncomfortable their allyship evaporates. And that's NOT allyship. Jared Milrad interviews director D. Smith about her directorial debut, KOKOMO CITY, a documentary feature that focuses on the lives and stories of four Black trans sex workers in Atlanta and New York City. The film, edited and shot by Smith in bold black and white, is a refreshingly unfiltered portrayal of Black trans life. Holding nothing back, the film vibrates with energy, sex, challenge, and hard-earned wisdom. Executive produced by Lena Waithe, KOKOMO CITY won the Sundance Film Festival's NEXT Innovator Award and NEXT Audience Award, as well as the Berlinale's Audience Award in the Panorama Documentary section. D. discusses her career as a two-time Grammy-nominated producer, how her experiences in the music industry led her to filmmaking, and the importance of depicting authentic representations of trans life on-screen. The Pop Culture Happy Hour team is off today, so we're bringing you an episode of NPR's It's Been A Minute. Host and our pal Brittany Luse recently spoke with our other pal Tre'vell Anderson. They recently published a book called We See Each Other. It's about the complicated history of trans representation in TV and film.
In 2001's Two Can Play That Game, Vivica A. Fox plays Shanté Smith, a confident, self-possessed woman who narrates the film by barreling the camera and telling the audience just how it is. A middle-schooler at the time, Shar Jossell (now a journalist and the co-host of We See Each Other: The Podcast), heard Shanté speaking to her in more ways than one. And what she heard changed her life. That, plus one quick thing about the new movie SHEROES.***With Jordan Crucchiola and Shar Jossell
This week FANTI is passing the mic to We See Each Other: The Podcast. After you listen to the episode, make sure to check out Kristen Lovell's The Stroll which premiered on Max the evening before this episode dropped.Hosts Tre'vell Anderson and Shar Jossell welcome producer and co - director of the documentary, The Stroll, Kristen Lovell as they discuss the documentary's portrayal of trans sex workers who worked in the Meatpacking District of New York City during the 90s. Lovell also speaks on finally having the control of the Black trans narrative behind the camera, and not just as the subject. Then, our hosts speak with the producer and director of the documentary, Kokomo City, D. Smith. She discusses the audience's reception to the film and the legacy of Koko Da Doll, the star of the film who was tragically murdered earlier this year. But first, Tre'vell and Shar discuss sex work representation in media as it pertains to Black Trans women and while it being a necessary piece of trans history, it is not the end all be all of trans representation. And later we hear what every day trans folks have to say about trans visibility in another segment of Pass The Mic.Episode Notes:Hosts Tre'vell Anderson and Shar Jossell welcome producer and co - director of the documentary, The Stroll, Kristen Lovell as they discuss the documentary's portrayal of trans sex workers who worked in the Meatpacking District of New York City during the 90s. Al Val is a comedian, actor, writer and musician who has appeared on programs for CBC, MTV, and YTV. She's also headlined standup comedy shows all over North America. A graduate of Second City's Conservatory Program, Val also performed with improv troupe “Starwipe” for 8 years. Val is set to co-headline Just for Laughs Toronto with Allie Pearse in the Fall, has just finished filming a reality show for OutTV, and has been performing non-stop during Pride. Val combined coming out as transgender during the pandemic with her sudden emergence as a force in Canadian comedy. She spoke with me about how, as a comedic performer, one of the first things she is driven to address is the legibility of her gender nonconforming identity. She does this with a terrific sense of timing, and also through her great command of physicality—a thing that not all stand-up comedians have. We also talked about the sense of responsibility she has to bring joy through humour; this is, of course, common among comics, but perhaps not as common as we might think. Her goal is not only to “break the tension,” but to also remind audience that they don't need to decide what is “morally okay to laugh at,” and that there is no need for “pity” or “coddling”—affective states that are antithetical to a good comedy show and certainly not conducive to recognizing transgender as a legitimate social identity. It was really interesting to get a sense, from Al, of how the industry of comedy works in Canada. It's a competitive market, and one where comedians don't really receive much or any support. For this reason, she says she's had to build a career mostly on her own. Working independently means that, as she puts it, “your attention is being pulled in so many different directions.” There can and should be more support for the art of stand-up comedy in Canada, and so we address the kinds of organizing and lobbying that's happening around this issue, which has only been exacerbated by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The conversation really zeroes in on the question of how comedy works, and the place of vulnerability and authenticity in it. This is especially relevant to Al Val's brand of comedy. Comedy is, from her perspective, easier when it's “honest,” and this is in spite of the fact that there's a degree to which, when you perform, you're always “submitting yourself to judgment” as an entertainer. That relationship between humour and truth is maybe an especially salient feature of today's comedy, when you think about the ways that it's emerged as a confessional, intimate, immediate art form in the last 5 years. The way Al puts it, it's about “packaging” both “trauma and insight into joke form” to both “disguise” it and inspire people to “think and reflect” on a “thesis” for a while. A central part of her comedy right now is working through the question of “what constitutes gender.” In the words of Tey Meadow, “Gender subjectivity is tender ground. It shifts beneath our feet, eludes easy capture, and impinges on emotional nerves. Sometimes we find ourselves seeking recognition in the most unlikely places. Even when handled with care, it is treacherous territory.” We're seeing this throughout society right now, as greater support for transgendered folks is also provoking a regressive, conservative backlash against gender nonconformity. I found it really striking that, for Val, the focus is on making sure that, with positive trans representation, we make transphobic jokes and rearguard politics “a relic of the past.” She says she just has a “nonchalant, indifferent blind trust” that we will look back in ten years and know that the backlash was the last gasp of a hostile, uncaring attitude that has no place in society.
This Pride month we wanted to reflect on why thoughtful representation matters. Join VSC Education Coordinator Emilie Mitchell and VSC LGBTQ+ Advocate Roxane Perret as they chat with Orlando Filmmaker Mel Turnage about Trans Representation in Film, its importance, and ways we can be better allies and supporters for Trans folks. Roxane Perret (she/her) earned her Bachelor's in Clinical Psychology from the University of Central Florida in 2021. She is currently in the Master's of Social Work program at UCF and is set to graduate in Summer 2024. She was a volunteer with the VSC for two years and is now the LGBTQ+ Advocate. Mel Turnage (she/her) is an Orlando filmmaker who is currently pursuing a master's degree in film production at the University of Central Florida. We made it to 100 episode but we're still going. This episode has some cool things and also some sad things, so be prepared. First up we take a look at the RWBY Ice Queendom trailer ahead of the first three episodes dropping later this June. It's studio Shaft partnering with Rooster Teeth to sort of retell/spin off from the original series. From there we're finally delivering on some of our pride related segments this month and talking about the importance of representation in the media we consume, specifically how the LGBT community is portrayed in Anime which as we all know is only becoming more and more global. We've got a couple of good examples from recent titles on what we'd like to see more of as well one excellent chapter of the One Piece manga. Lastly we are sad to see the passing of both Billy Kametz and Jim White, two voice actors who brought a lot to the community and whose work meant a lot to a lot of people. We mentioned Mr. Kametz on the podcast before and will link the gofundme dedicated to his memory. Please consider donating if you can, both of them will surely be missed a great deal.
In this episode, recorded in 2021 with the filmmaker Brad Michael Elmore, Ariel discusses the issue of LGBTQIA+ representation in horror, specifically in his lesbian vampire horror comedy, Bit.Support the show (https://lovethepodcast.com/omnibusride)
Hey there, listeners! Another week, another weekly episode! This one covers so much, so stick around! Our NEWS segment (0:08:24) starts with a few shorter bits of updates (Don't miss the Illyana podcast or the Batman on HBO Max!), before digging deep into Multiverse of Madness speculation (0:12:26) based off of a comic book wrap gift, Trans Representation in DC media (0:18:18), the Future of DC Entertainment (0:24:50), highs and lows of the Wonder Twins casting (0:28:18), Constantine by JJ Abrams Updates and Rumors (0:32:21), the official White Knight Red Hood Announcement (0:37:37), and of course, a full breakdown of the Thor: Love and Thunder Teaser (0:43:15)! The weekly comic book PICKS (1:02:02) feature the penultimate Batman/Catwoman issue, Immortal Red Sonja #1 (fantastic!), and a few other fun things. This week's comic book PULLS (1:11:21) come with a short preface on open-mindedness, which I hope is understood. The discussion of MOON KNIGHT episode 3 (1:20:30) goes through the events of the show, the comic book references and Easter eggs, and theories about where we're going next. And, of course, an explanation on who that third persona likely is! We end with YOUNG JUSTICE Season 4 episode 18 (1:32:07) where things are getting Zoddy, and Doctor Who: Legend of the Sea Devils Spring Special (1:35:25), where I talk the history of the Sea Devils in Who, as well as the real life history of Madame Ching: Pirate Queen! I'll be back with a new weekly episode next Monday (or Tuesday) talking comic books, news, speculation, Moon Knight, Young Justice, and DC and Marvel July comic book solicitations! Till then, stay sweaty, and enjoy your week. Gorgeous book lovers, do we have an episode for you?! This conversation with Torrey Peters, authors of the acclaimed Detransition, Baby was one of our very favourites. We chose Torrey's book as our February book of the month, for all the ways it touches on modern love, trans identity, and queerness, as well as parenthood and what that means to each of us. In this chat, our founder Molly spoke with Torrey about her experience of trans identity and how she reflected this in Detransition, Baby, as well as the illuminating likeness Torrey presents between divorced women and trans women. We also chat excitedly about Detransition, Baby being adapted for the screen, and all the ways in which we can be empowered and educated by stories of others whose lives are so different to ours, but their desires and dreams are so similar. You can get your copy of Detransition, Baby, alongside other amazing gifts in our monthly book subscription box, linked below! New here? TW: Strong language, transphobia Today we're talking about the representation of transgender people in film and how trans people have fought for the right to tell their own stories. Gia Gunn, famed, outspoken Drag Race contestant steps Behind The Rope. Checking in from her home in WeHo, Gia is here to tell it all. We would expect nothing less from one of Drag Race's most outspoken contestants in the history of the show! Let us start at the beginning. Gia takes us back to the first time she did drag, what that was like, what prompted her to “try” and where her infamous name “Gia Gunn” comes from. Think Project Runway! Gia also opens up about the first time she became aware of her “trans identity” and what that was like to deal with at a young age. Flash forward to Season Six of RuPaul's Drag Race, Gia explains how she got involved with the Iconic hit TV show and why Season Six was the right time to participate. Gia discusses what it was like to film the show, the other Queens, the competitions and what it was like to “not be out” at the time. Flash forward to “All Stars Season Four”, Gia was back and ready to take the competition by storm. We discuss the differences this time in “All Stars”, the competition as well as the fact that Gia was an out Transgender Woman, or we should say Woman, participating in Drag Race. Of course, we address the fact that Gia's participation in this installment of “All Stars“ came mere months after RuPaul's comment that they would not cast an openly Transgender Contestant on the show. Gia explains how she felt by that statement and whether she thinks that impacted the decision to cast her (whether or not it was “stunt casting”). She also opens up about the rumored filmed but, ultimately, edited altercation with RuPaul on set during “All Stars” over this statement and whether her standing up to RuPaul led, in any way, to her elimination. She also opens up about the fact that the altercation was edited and whether the show is forever slanted to “make Ru look good at all costs”. Gia also chats about the recent change of RuPaul's famous opening catch phrase to be gender inclusive and the presence of contestant Gottmik, Drag race's first Trans Male Drag Queen. Gia chats about the whether RuPaul and Drag Race have come far in their Diversity and Inclusion Efforts, shares her thoughts on Caitlyn Jenner - they are not what you would think, and discusses shows like Pose answering the main question as to whether each has been a step forward for the Trans Community. Finally, Gia discusses current projects, the “Gia” brand, and the fact that it is beyond time for The Real Housewives to include a full time Trans Housewife. Yes, Gia is nominating herself. In true Gia Gunn fashion, NOTHING is off limits nor held back. @gia_gunn @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef Bonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope Brought to you by O.R.G SKINCARE - https://www.orgskincare.com (Use Code VELVET for 15% Off Entire Purchase) Brought to you by ROTHY'S - https://www.rothys.com/velvet (Now For Men Too) Brought to you by NOOM - http://www.noom.com/VELVET (Sign Up for Your Trial Today) Merch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 Learn more about your ad choices. In a divergence from my usual format, I hold a conversation with Jessie Blount and Lark Malakai, the producers of The Gayly Prophet, EsGAYpe from Reality, and We are the Gayers at Hashtag Ruthless Productions, about their experiences with fanfiction as well as the importantance of trans and queer representation in media and the important role that fanfiction plays in providing that representation. We also discuss the ability of fanfiction to fill gaps and transform works that have come from problematic sources, particularly Harry Potter, and the importance in firing JK Rowling/ finding ways to ethically engage with Harry Potter while denying her profits under our capitalist society. This week's episode is our first look at the work of the Wachowski sisters - Lily and Lana - who are the most prolific SF creators on the WMSF list with their work expanding across several platforms. We watched Jupiter Ascending (Wachowskis) - our first screening since September - and are both avid fans of Sense8. We are joined this week by our special guest science fiction critic, writer, editor, and publisher Cheryl Morgan. After a run of fairly serious space and science/fiction films we wanted to watch some pure space opera - but this is a Wachowski storyworld it was never going to be that simple...
Today I'm super excited to have Grayson Harvey. Grayson identifies as trans masculine and is here today to share their journey. So often many people in the trans community have become educators and I'm so grateful for Grayson to take the time to educate us on how we can all be better allies and support our trans family. We talk a lot in this episode about legislation and how important trans representation is for humanization and progress. Tune into this episode to see how you can turn your coal into diamonds.
Last year, we saw the media regularly call Black Lives Matter protesters “rioters,” “violent,” or “thugs.” Yet on January 6, those who attacked the U.S. Capitol were often described as “passionate protestors” and “Trump supporters.” Linguistic anthropologist Suzanne Wertheim explains why these language disparities matter—and how biases like these show up in our workplaces, too. Dr. Suzanne Wertheim is an anti-bias consultant, researcher, and educator. She is also the founder of Worthwhile Research & Consulting, a firm that optimizes workplace culture through anti-bias and communication training. She is an expert in how cultural biases are expressed and perpetuated through language, and trains tech companies to spot and dismantle these biases in their workplaces. It's not your fault that you were born with a human brain. It's not your fault that your entire lifetime you've been fed garbage distorted data. And it's not your fault you were born into the body you were born into… But it is your responsibility, once you learn things, to make sure that you are looking for problems and then using your power to address them. —Dr. Suzanne Wertheim, founder, Worthwhile Research & Consulting We talk about:The role of a linguistic anthropologistThe dangers of softening language and other linguistic distortionsHow bias impacts workers in the tech industryWhich populations are most at risk for workplace bias and how to effectively fight against itWhat we can learn from research on trans workers who transitioned gender presentation in the workplacePlus: in this week’s You’ve Got This, Sara talks self-care, self-confidence, and how to better understand our inner critic. Good luck, future me. I hope you feel more certain: Noah, a high school senior in Illinois, is writing to organise his thoughts. Considering ideas of gender and where his identity might fit on the spectrum, Noah's letter is full of questions for his future self. Now, as that slightly older person, Noah shares how the answers weren't as important as the process of asking the questions in the first place. He talks about applying for colleges, disregarding labels, finding community online, and realizes that where he feels comfortable to express himself has slowly shifted since he wrote this letter. On this episode of the podcast, guest collaborator Sheepwave and I discuss two important topics in the MTG sphere. The first half of the show is dedicated to the announcement last week from Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast that there will be Lord of the Rings and Warhammer 40k crossovers with Magic expected sometime in 2022. We discuss the potential of crossovers in MTG as well as identifying the number of crossovers already present in Magic's design. In the second half of the show, we discuss how WotC has increased the visibility of queer and trans representation in the Magic lore by not only including Niko Aris as the first openly trans Planeswalker, but has also utilized Niko as a major part of the advertising campaign for the Kaldheim set instead of a footnote. We discuss how representation can be crucial to bringing those who might not otherwise play into the game, which leads to a healthier overall playing community. Sheepwave can be found on Twitter at @sheepycutie, and her website is sheepwave.com You can find more episodes of my podcast on Spotify, Google Casts, and Apple Podcasts. I'm a trans woman who plays video games. I guess this episode was inevitable. Let's dig into trans representation in Swery's games, particularly Deadly Premonition 2.
The new documentary Disclosure captures the history of trans representation in Hollywood and mainstream media, with particular attention to the ways in which racism and misogyny influence the portrayal of those who transgress society's gender norms in order to live their truth. In a wide-ranging discussion, Director Sam Feder and Laverne Cox, star of Orange is the New Black, talk with Medaya and Eric about what has been gained in recent years as well as the challenges ahead as transgender stories, writers, directors, and performers take center stage. Also, Percival Everett, author of Telephone, returns to recommend Laurence Sterne's classic Tristam Shandy, as well as Michael Winterbottom's recent film adaptation: Tristam Shady: A Cock and Bull Story.
In this episode of the Trans Icelandic Broad Cast, Andie Sophia Fontaine and Sæborg Ninja Urðardóttir discuss how trans people are portrayed in television and movies. They discuss what's been done wrong, what's been done right, and why positive representation matters. Speaking of representation, Andie and Sæborg would like to warmly invite any trans masculine or nonbinary people to reach out to be special guests on the podcast. Those interested are asked to send an email to andie@grapevine.is. Enjoy!
