A Navy Aviation Officer Candidate with a bad attitude (Richard Gere) must learn to be a team player or risk his chance to make a better life for himself. Co-starring Debra Winger, Louis Gossett Jr., David Keith, Robert Loggia, Lisa Eilbacher, Harold Sylvester and David Caruso. Directed by Taylor Hackford and features the hit song "Up Where We Belong" performed by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes.
After Italian producers balked at director Enzo Castellari's idea to remake The Dirty Dozen, he raised the money himself and hired American B-movie titans Bo Svenson and Fred Williamson to lead a group of military prisoners across Nazi German territory (really the backlots of Cinecitta and surrounding areas) on a trek to freedom into Switzerland. In 1978's The Inglorious Bastards, Castellari uses all the staples of Italian 70's schlock cinema (boobs, blood and bad dubbing) to great effect in this rousing and silly war film. Dan and Vicky discuss the film that so inspired Quentin Tarantino he bought the rights to the title to use for his own 2009 Nazi war film. Along the way, you'll get conversations on saving movie theatres, Sip and Paint and 80's actress Lisa Eilbacher as well as find out what a Disney bitch is (hint: Vicky is one). You'll also hear talk of some recently seen like Beverly HIlls Cop: Axel F, The Seven Samurai in 4K, A Quiet Place: Day One, Will and Grace reruns and Fly Me To The Moon. This week, after a 40th anniversary sequel went straight to Netflix, we're winding it back to a 23-year-old Eddie Murphy's breakout smash as a capital-M Movie Star. It's 1984's Beverly Hills Cop, directed by Martin Brest, and starring Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Lisa Eilbacher, Ronny Cox, Steven Berkoff, Jonathan Banks, Bronson Pinchot, and Paul Reiser. This one comes from J Mo's collection as it's a movie he's strangely never seen before, having been burned by other overhyped Murphy comedies of the 80s? Is this one worthy of the hype? We'll find out together, but if you've seen it I think you know. Plus: Hayley's watched Axel F. to see where this franchise is at after 40 years, while Justin's staying hydrated in the heat. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to this discussion, Beverly Hills Cop is currently streaming on both Netflix and Paramount+ in Canada at the time of publication. Other works referenced in this episode include Twisters, Gladiator II, The Last Duel, House of Gucci, Napoleon, Speed Racer, Miami Vice (2006), Hot Rod, Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, Point Blank, Grosse Pointe Blank, High Fidelity, Charade, Driveaway Dolls, Maid, Blockers, Metro, Trading Places, Bowfinger, The Other Guys, The Santa Clause, True Romance, Scarface, Cobra and Tango & Cash among others. We're back next week to tee up Deadpool & Wolverine by watching Hugh Jackman's previous collaboration with director Shawn Levy: a silly sci-fi rock-em sock-em robot boxing movie from 2011 called Real Steel, with Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie and Kevin Durand, currently streaming in Canada on Netflix and free with ads on the CTV app. And of course, we'll close out the month of July by inducting Twister into the pod canon. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Episode 12 - The BTW team put their special take on 1984's Beverly Hills Cop. Considered one of the most influential comedies of the 1980s, Beverly Hills Cop is a comedy/action movie starring Eddie Murphy as Detroit police detective Axel Foley. The movie was directed by Martin Brest and also starred Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, and Lisa Eilbacher. Beverly Hills Cop was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $300 million at the box office and sending the Eddie Murphy star into the stratosphere. The team at Born to Watch have already covered one Eddie Murphy movie in The Golden Child and it wasn't received well, with it sitting on the bottom of the ladder. Revisiting a favourite movie is always fraught with danger but Beverly Hills Cop is one of those special films that are as good now as it was in 1984.The boys will cover all the major topics on the movie and answer some of the big questions like:-1. What exactly was the relationship between Axel and Mikey?2. Again, what are bearer bonds?3. Is this as good as it got for Eddie? Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://www.facebook.com/borntowatchpodcast

Not only is BEVERLY HILLS COP one of the biggest movie franchises, but it also helped propel a cross-genre of films still thriving today.
