"Forrest Gump" came out in 1994 and took over the world. Kids were shouting "Run Forrest, run!" and "Seat's taken!" and talking about boxes of chocolate with voice affectations that would surely get them cancelled today! Directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, and Sally Field, the film was almost universally adored, and won all of the awards. It's one of the most beloved films of all time, right? No? People hate it now!? Oh man, let's get into it. 00:00 - Intro / Wait people hate Forrest Gump?? 01:35 - What exactly was Forrest's... condition AKA LET'S MOVE ON 03:30 - Keith thinks this is one of the most emotionally effecting films of all time 05:53 - This movie was such a big deal, and largely a product of its time 09:21 - Looking at who was going to be cast as Forrest and Bubba, did the filmmakers originally plan for this to be more comedic AKA thank God they picked Tom Hanks 16:03 - Tom Hanks gives an incredible performance, masterfully balancing the "goofiness" of the character with true heart and subtlety 20:35 - Gary Sinise as Lt. Dan is fantastic 21:45 - Keith's take on the theme of the film: Chance vs. Destiny 25:13 - Writing, editing, pacing... all excellent, and the film excellently balances the shifting tones 28:00 - The film allows you to relate to its emotional moments, and see yourself in the situations Forrest finds himself in 31:37 - Keith is brought to tears by one scene in particular 35:56 - Funny moments and quotability 38:30 - Jenny is just awful, and you're sexist for thinking so 45:20 - Keith doesn't love the degree to which Forrest fits into American history 51:38 - Cut the whole running sequence and that terrible "happy face" t-shirt scene 57:57 - Forrest is covertly trying to turn you into a conservative 01:04:49 - Wait so how did Jenny die? Gary Oldman thinks "The Fifth Element" sucks. Is he right? In this episode the boys look back at Luc Besson's 1997 genre-bending sci-fi action flick "The Fifth Element," which stars Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, Gary Oldman, Chris Tucker, Ian Holm, and Tiny Lister. It's colorful and it's fun and it's a bit campy here and there... but is it good? Keith, watching it for the first time, is less than convinced. Is "Starship Troopers" brilliant or stupid? Or both? Paul Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers" was released in 1997, and was immediately torn apart by critics. It was called "brainless" and "overly violent" and even was accused of being overtly pro-fascist. They didn't seem to get the joke. But how much of the film IS a joke? How much is meant to be satire, and how much is meant to be taken at face value as a sci-fi space adventure? The Bluff Council is here to ask all these questions. Not answer, but ask. We need you guys to answer!! Someone help us out here! Let's get into it. 00:00 - Intro / This movie scarred Ev for life, apparently 03:44 - Rewatching "Starship Troopers" today, knowing it is satire 04:50 - Paul Verhoeven and his anti-fascism messaging 07:40 - Why didn't critics in the 90s get the satire memo? 08:49 - Keith loves the propaganda videos 10:05 - The struggle to deduce the balance between satire and seriousness in this movie 12:29 - The special effects are still pretty solid 13:33 - Keith loves the comedy in this film 14:29 - Did the actors know this was a comedy? Were they in on the joke? 17:50 - The film tries to have its cake and eat it too, and that makes for some tonal challenges 19:49 - A movie can start to drag when it's based around one big "joke" 22:00 - The humans lose every fight, which is fine since they're the villains of the story 25:09 - The brilliance of the co-ed group shower scene 29:00 - Dizzy's death and the lack of genuine emotion in the film 31:40 - What's today's version of this film? "Don't Look Up?" 33:26 - Verhoeven deserves more credit 35:05 "The Perils of War" starring The Bluff Council 35:48 - Background actors thirsting over Dina Meyer "Starship Troopers" starred Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, Dina Meyer, Neil Patrick Harris, Jake Busey, Michael Ironside, and Clancy Brown.
