Following our Kurt Russell triple-feature, we decided to talk about even more Kurt Russell movies on Patreon! Those movies ended up being Tango & Cash (1989), 3000 Miles to Graceland (2001), and Bone Tomahawk (2015). Here is a small snippet of our discussion on that first film. This week I am joined by Chris and Elle of SPOIL MY MOVIE! We discuss the cult favorite TANGO & CASH - and why the nostalgia glasses are foggy for us.Police officers Ray Tango (Sylvester Stallone) and Gabe Cash (Kurt Russell) are narcotics experts working to bring down drug lord Yves Perret (Jack Palance). In an attempt to stymie their efforts, Perret sets up Tango and Cash, making it look as if they've killed an FBI agent. Arrested and put in prison, the two cops formulate an escape plan and, once out, team up with Tango's exotic dancer sister, Katherine (Teri Hatcher), in order to clear their records and take down Perret once and for all.Sign up for Zencaster TODAY! https://zen.ai/Ax2lLiOypAMyn_rp4eoKemgLq-YYFcUzPdCT19xZh1EOFFER CODES: cultworthyVisit thecultworthy.comCultworthy LETTERBOXD: https://boxd.it/31EObSPOIL MY MOVIE https://open.spotify.com/show/70v8Vr992ShbWDVNg5oPmi
An 80s flick synonymous with perhaps the most popular action genre of the eighties: the buddy-cop movie. In the wake of Lethal Weapon, there were many variations of the formula. Perhaps the most testosterone-fuelled was this 1989 cult classic that paired Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell as Los Angeles cops framed by Jack Palance's evil drug lord. With generous helpings of style, odd-couple quips, and tons of action, the movie was a box office hit. But behind the scenes, it was a mess, with the producers going through (at least) two directors and two cinematographers with a fast-approaching release date and pressure from the studio. So check your stock portfolios, brush up on your English lessons, and keep the mice out of the maze as Tim Williams and guest co-host, JB Huffman from "Manly Movies" Podcast discuss “Tango & Cash” from 1989 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: When Tango and Cash escape from prison, Cash turns to Tango and asks if he stopped "for coffee and a Danish." Tango responds, "I hate Danish," an in-joke referencing Sylvester Stallone's recent divorce from Danish actress Brigitte Nielson. At the quarry scene towards the end, one of the monster trucks is the famous Bigfoot truck. Although it's painted in different colors than its trademark blue and does not feature any Bigfoot decals, it was confirmed by Bob Chandler, the owner of the original monster truck, that it is indeed Bigfoot. This week, after a 40th anniversary sequel went straight to Netflix, we're winding it back to a 23-year-old Eddie Murphy's breakout smash as a capital-M Movie Star. It's 1984's Beverly Hills Cop, directed by Martin Brest, and starring Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Lisa Eilbacher, Ronny Cox, Steven Berkoff, Jonathan Banks, Bronson Pinchot, and Paul Reiser. This one comes from J Mo's collection as it's a movie he's strangely never seen before, having been burned by other overhyped Murphy comedies of the 80s? Is this one worthy of the hype? We'll find out together, but if you've seen it I think you know. Plus: Hayley's watched Axel F. to see where this franchise is at after 40 years, while Justin's staying hydrated in the heat. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to this discussion, Beverly Hills Cop is currently streaming on both Netflix and Paramount+ in Canada at the time of publication. Other works referenced in this episode include Twisters, Gladiator II, The Last Duel, House of Gucci, Napoleon, Speed Racer, Miami Vice (2006), Hot Rod, Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, Point Blank, Grosse Pointe Blank, High Fidelity, Charade, Driveaway Dolls, Maid, Blockers, Metro, Trading Places, Bowfinger, The Other Guys, The Santa Clause, True Romance, Scarface, Cobra and Tango & Cash among others. We're back next week to tee up Deadpool & Wolverine by watching Hugh Jackman's previous collaboration with director Shawn Levy: a silly sci-fi rock-em sock-em robot boxing movie from 2011 called Real Steel, with Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie and Kevin Durand, currently streaming in Canada on Netflix and free with ads on the CTV app. And of course, we'll close out the month of July by inducting Twister into the pod canon. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
Sean celebrates our 600th episode with a rewatch of Tango & Cash (1989), the adult action cartoon that partners Sylvester Stallone with Kurt Russell's hair, about two wrongly accused rivals who have to take down the syndicate that set them up. Listen as we break out our measuring sticks in the prison shower, send rats through a desktop maze, and visit the Q branch of the LA police department on this week's exciting episode! One of the last movies released in the '80s, it's the apogee of '80s action movies, and the second installment of our Other Buddies month: Tango & Cash! Starring Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell, with no less than four directors, and a writer that refused to put his name on the movie, it's a feature that shouldn't work, but does... so, so well. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thegenxfiles/support
We're celebrating one full year of being unlikely partners on the podcast beat by finally getting around to what we've been told is one of the all-time great buddy cop movies. Yes it's 1989's Tango & Cash, directed by a three-headed monster of directors on a deeply troubled production but overseen in post-production by Demolition Man editor Stuart Baird, and starring Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, Jack Palance, Teri Hatcher, Brion James, James Hong, Michael J. Pollard, Robert Z'Dar, Lewis Arquette, Eddie Bunker and Clint Howard. No sense sugar-coating it, she doesn't want it to be a secret: Hayley hated this movie. But J Mo still makes the case for its not-so-guilty pleasures, and we reflect on a full year of doing the show. Of course, with the Oscars on Sunday we also take a quick minute to make our picks in the major categories, leading Justin to discover that while he's now seen 100 films from 2023, he's somehow missed almost all the Oscar movies. Embarrassing. We're going heavy on Oppenheimer. Big surprise. Other works discussed in this episode include Dune: Part Two, Robin Hood: Men In Tights, Spaceballs, The Princess Bride, The Emperor's New Groove, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Voyeurs, Deep Water, Nocturne, The Perfection, Tenet, The Fast Franchise, First Blood, Rocky, Thief, The Rocketeer, Dick Tracy, Cobra, and Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. We'll be back next week to kick off a new campaign as we're joined by Briarpatch publisher and all-around good dude John Cameron to discuss the 1972 Robert Redford political satire The Candidate, which is currently available to watch in its entirety for free on YouTube. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
This week, he will, he will rock you as we begin the first themeless month on the pod in quite a while with a movie that Hayley has seen north of 50 times and Justin has never seen before now. It's 2001's A Knight's Tale, written and directed by Brian Helgeland, and starring Heath Ledger, Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Paul Bettany, Mark Addy, Alan Tudyk, Laura Fraser and James Purefoy. It's the movie that firmly cemented Ledger as a movie star, as Helgeland crafts an underdog sports movie in the world of medieval jousting. Plus we've got theatrical field trips to report on as Hayley caught Drive-Away Dolls this week, while J Mo took in the Tenet re-release on 70mm. If you'd like to watch the film before listening to our discussion, A Knight's Tale is currently streaming on Netflix in Canada at the time of publication. Other works discussed on this episode include Macbeth, Dune: Part 2, Madame Web, Mr. 3000, Top Gun, 10 Things I Hate About You, Lords of Dogtown, I'm Not There, Brokeback Mountain, The Dark Knight, Capote, Dark City, Dazed & Confused, Rollerball, Payback, The Order, L.A. Confidential, Mystic River, Blood Work, Man on Fire, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, and Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant. We'll be back next week to celebrate one full year of ADHD-DVD as we die and go to buddy-cop heaven with Stallone and Kurt Russell in 1989's Tango & Cash. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
Tom Lorenzo (You're Missing Out Podcast) is on this week to discuss the hilariously bad 80s action flick: TANGO & CASHWe discuss Sylvester Stallone's career and on-screen persona. From Rocky, to beyond, we try to understand why his lows are so low, and his highs are so high. Compared to his co-star Kurt Russell, whose comedic timing and ability to expertly play off his good looks, almost manages to keep this movie on its feet. Hosted on Acast. "Tango & Cash" was the final major motion picture released in the 1980s. Like a fish born with legs, this 1989 action-comedy showed signs of evolution into a new age but sucked ass at swimming. Big D didn't know "Tango & Cash" was supposed to be comedy. Gene wondered why the movie failed so hard at depicting journalism and court proceedings. And both hosts were shocked at the entire prison plotline. In this episode, The Shat Crew asks A.I. to assist with new action-star pairings (Chuck Norris and Van Damme, anyone?), apologizes to Teri Hatcher, wonders if Jack Palance is OK, and braces for an HBO reboot from the makers of "True Detective." Starring Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell the last 80s action movie should be an amazing movie. Unfortunately the production was a nightmare. The director and the producer were at odds, the script was constantly rewritten, and filming ran late and $20 million over budget. Somehow, Tango & Cash still manages to be a watchable and entertaining film. It just falls far short of its potential.

Our Bad Boys episode was so much fun that we decided to keep chatting about prison movies. Covered in the conversation are prison movie themes like revenge and redemption, tropes such as the guy who can get anything or the inevitable shower scene, and how great prison films like The Longest Yard, The Shawshank Redemption, and Starred Up have more to say about the human condition. We also chop up films that have elements of prison movies within them like Deadlock, Face Off, Tango & Cash, and Out of Sight.
Idag är vi nyktra(!) när vi snackar om snutar på film i form av den sköna "Tango & Cash" från 1989, den babbliga "The Maltese Falcon" från 1941 och den helt galna "Stone Cold" från 1991.

Today we are talking about the 1989 film Tango & Cash. In true silly 80s fashion this film is full of cheesy lines, action film cliches, and predictable plot lines and if a person is in the right mood, enjoyable. The film boasts three Razzie awards for worst actor and worst screenplay. [Tango grabs a hefty submachine gun and hands Cash a pistol] Ray Tango: Here. Gabriel Cash: Aw, c'mon, how come yours is bigger than mine? Ray Tango: Genetics, peewee. Some of our favorite parts of this movie are: Many directors Thank goodness Patrick Swayze didn't get the role of Cash Excellent car chase to open the film How many times does it rain that much in Cali The cheeky lines like “Does this guy think he's Rambo?” Sound effects from other films like Star Wars and Back to the Future Special thanks to our editor Geoff Vrijmoet for this episode and Melissa Villagrana for helping out with our social media posts. The 2009 film I Love You, Man is the topic of today's show. The Paul Rudd and Jason Segel pairing sets up tension through the whole film. Rudd's character Peter is looking for a friend to be his best man, enter Sydney played by Segel. At first Rudd's fiancé Zooey, portrayed by Rashida Jones is happy that he is making a friend but things start to be suspicious. Peter Klaven: “Slapping the bass! Slappa da bass! Slappa da bass mon! Slappa de bass mon!” Some of our favorite parts of this movie are: The dog named Anwar Sadat Paul Rudd acting like a dork John Favreau acting like a jerk Jason Segel acting suspicious Show don't tell of Rudd only interacting with women at work Koo Koo a Roo is only a LA based restaurant Billboard prices are off Special thanks to our editor Geoff Vrijmoet for this episode and Melissa Villagrana for helping out with our social media posts. Bad English is a supergroup composed of members of Journey and The Babys. From The Babys comes John Waite on lead vocals, Rick Phillips on bass, and Jonathan Cain on keyboards. From Journey comes Neal Schon in lead guitar, and Jonathan Cain, the common thread between the two groups. Deen Castronovo is on drums and would later join Journey. The band was initially formed by Cain, Schon, and Waite. The name Bad English comes from a term in the game of pool. John Waite missed a shot, and Jonathan Cain made a comment on how bad his English was.The group was attempting to sound original and not too much like either of their previous groups or Waite's solo work. They were also being pulled by the record producers towards a highly produced sound common with the hair metal groups of the time. The group wrote about 40 songs in six months for the debut album, eponymously named Bad English, but Waite stated that “a lot of them weren't very good.” There were enough good songs to create a hit album, however, as this debut went to number 21 on the Billboard 200 charts. Bad English would produce one other album after this debut, but it wasn't very successful. Shortly thereafter the group disbanded with Waite continuing solo work, and with some other members re-joining Journey.Bruce brings us this supergroup. Best of What I GotThis is the opening track to the album, and was the fifth of seven singles released - though this one was only released on US rock charts. It hit number 9 on the Mainstream Rock charts. It was also featured in the credits to the buddy cop film "Tango & Cash."Lay DownA deeper track written by Waite, Schon, and Cain, this track was not released as a single. It is a bid more rocking, with lyrics about coming back from a trip and getting together with your girl. Forget Me NotThe first single from the album was a darker song written by Waite, Cain, and Mark Spiro, a songwriter and record producer who worked with a number of musicians. Spiro collaborated on this and four other tracks from the album. The inspiration for these lyrics are Anne Rice's vampire novels. The lyrics deal with possession, lust, and a longing that goes on throughout eternity. When I See You SmileThis is the big hit single which went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Diane Warren, an American songwriter and hitmaker for many artists from Celine Dion to Milli Vanilli, wrote this hit. Ironically it would create a rift within the group as they struggled with whether to seek hits on the next album or to create their own material. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter by Iron Maiden (from the motion picture "A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child”)Freddy Kruger continues his rampage in this fifth installment of the horror franchise. STAFF PICKS:Once Bitten, Twice Shy by Great WhiteBrian starts off this week's staff picks with the biggest hit from LA hair band White Snake. This song is a cover from a 1975 single from Ian Hunter, and appropriate for the title of their fourth album, "...Twice Shy." The lyrics reflect life on the road and learning from bad relationship experiences. The group lived on the road, touring for years. Love Song by The CureWayne's staff pick goes goth with a surprisingly positive song from a notoriously dark group. Robert Smith, The Cure's lead singer, wrote this song as a wedding gift for his bride, Mary Theresa Poole. Smith and Poole married in 1988, though they had known each other since they were 14.Closer to Fine by the Indigo Girls Rob features an Atlanta based indie rock duo. This single is off their platinum selling self-titled second album. Amy Ray and Emily Saliers are joined on this album by multiple Georgia artists, including members of R.E.M. Amy and Emily met in elementary school, began performing together as high school students, and took the title of Indigo Girls in college.Something to Hold on To by Trevor RabinBruce brings us a single from Yes alumnus Trevor Rabin's fourth solo album. This single went to number 3 on the Mainstream Rock chart, and the video got a Grammy nomination for Best Short Form Music Video. Rabin would later re-join seven other Yes alumni for the Union album in 1991. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Chinese Torture by QueenQueen's thirteenth studio album provides this instrumental which closes out this week's podcast.
It's another COULD'VE BEEN A CANNON and this time we're covering the infamously maligned TANGO & CASH. A movie that's better than the punchline it became over the past few decades. It's got prime sexy form Kurt Russel, Sly Stallone and Teri Hatcher with a Harold Faltermeyer score, what's not to love about this blatant copaganda romp?! Also, this movie's got more quips than Chandler Bing writing Deadpool fanfic over the corpse of an attention-deprived standup, cha cha. "Best Of What I Got"?

This week the group kicks off the holiday season with the theme of "these are a few of our favorite things" which are movies we will tune into any time they air on television and the first pick goes to Commando with the Sylvester Stalone and Kurt Russell buddy cop film, Tango & Cash. A movie that was so powerful it required two directors to complete it, Andrei Konchalovsky and Albert Magnoli. Also in the episode we welcome another member of the Porch family to the show, Fatty, who we learned was confused why Tom Hanks and his slobbering dog weren't in this.
S10E02 Nutty Buddies: Buddy Cop Movies - The CCS squad, being from different walks of life, are forced to overcome their differences, and work together to collar the Perp. Re-casts of Tango & Cash (1989) and Stakeout (1987) awaiting trial.
Hear us find our second wind in real time as we ask: whose baby is this, and will Kim orphan it? In which: -President Wifeguy: The Return -Sam talks a lot about Tango & Cash -and a familiar smokeshow reappears!
We hop back into the 80s action genre with yet another Stallone movie, but this time he's bringing along his buddy Kurt Russell. Today the movie is 1989's Tango & Cash. A movie that Roger Ebert called, "A waste of electricity". Was he right or wrong? Yes. An unrepentant Elekra King joins the podcast shortly after having been shot and killed by James Bond. We attempt to learn more about what led the daughter of an oil tycoon down such a destructive path & make sense of the choices she made to become the criminal mastermind who 007 was forced to stop at all cost. Afterwards, Jack speaks to Bond fan and YouTube host Shayla Miller. They have a fun conversation about James Bond as well their mutual love of Tango & Cash and the TV series Hannibal. Find out Shayla's answers to the JBR Quickfire Questions & how she started her YouTube channel with her friend Chelsea!
Despite being labeled polar opposites, Ray Tango and Gabe Cash are just a couple of glory hound hot-dogs cut from the same cloth. After several high profile drug busts, and a criminal amount of one-liners, the two are setup by LA's rodent obsessed crime boss and find themselves convicted of a murder they didn't commit. Can the macho men put their differences aside or will the egos of Tango & Cash cause the situation to be FUBAR.
Unlucky number 13 and it's a doozy! On this episode of the pod the boys dive into what Bryne refers to as a "dollar menu Lethal Weapon," 1989's TANGO & CASH starring Sylvester Stallone as a highly serious Beverly Hills cop (no, not *that* one) and Kurt Russell as his loose cannon counterpart. There's a lot to like here, primarily the chemistry between the two leads, but there's also a lot of tonally odd things in this movie that make it feel disjointed and like two very different movies sandwiched together. Bryne and James discuss that, as well as Cash's boot gun, Cash in drag, Teri Hatcher's, ahem, appeal, Stallone taking himself entirely too seriously while also taking over the direction of this movie, Jack Palance's turn as Perret and why he's not the main villian of the movie, and a lot more. Plus we fantasy cast a new Ocean's Eleven with '80s action stars that we promise will be TOTALLY different from the Expendables franchise. Did you know Tango & Cash was actually a comedy? I didn't realize that when we watched it. When you look at it as a comedy it really makes sense. Jokes on me.
¿Tanga & Bitcoin?
In this one, Jerry, Eddie and Cody talk Tango & Cash. Enjoy!
Ryan and "Matt" talk sexy about non-video games like Flex, Krosmaster, and Big Trouble In Little China figs before Ryan details how his movie spree included 4 movies that weren't Tango & Cash. Then they make up stuff about when they played Evolve, Evolve: Hunter's Quest, and The Jackbox Party Pack before drudging up Nintendo's missing 3DS shipments, new Shadow of Mordor DLC, and entire WORLD of tanks, a date for GTA V heists, a possible Alpha for The Division, Rock Band 4, Phantom Dust speedbumps, Spawn in Mortal Kombat X, game length a la The Order: 1886, and Magic Mario in this week's weak question.
