The difference between who we say we are and how we actually live impacts not just us personally, but also everyone we lead. But how can we learn to identify this gap and begin shrinking it? In this episode, Holly and I talk with our guest Terra Mattson, about this issue, which she calls an integrity gap. We dive into what this means, common symptoms of an integrity gap, and how to start closing this gap. In addition, Terra sheds light on why unresolved trauma is common in leaders and what leaders need to do about it. We also discuss with Terra whether we should address integrity gaps when we see them in other people. Finally, we explore why speaking up is so important, even when it’s risky and what it means to become a wholehearted leader. This is an important conversation for every leader, whether you are just getting started or whether you’ve been in leadership for years. As Terra reminds us in the conversation, this is an ongoing process and none of us are immune to integrity gaps. For the full show notes for this episode, go to estherlittlefield.com/episode121. wake up Waking up is not just about us. It's not just about an individual. Waking up might be a an individual journey, but the result of our waking in our own lives is a gift to the collective society and it guides the energy for where society moves next. If you would like to actively participate in the direction that society moves, then we must wake up, we must be mindful for that will encourage more people to wake up more people to be mindful in their lives, which will encourage better, more mindful choices for all of society." .40 - It's time to maybe start thinking about maybe how we can take advantage of this period of time in a way that we haven't quite yet. 2:00 - Why Now is the Best Time to Wake Up - Introduction "We are here as souls in order to wake up. It's interesting to think that we are asleep. I know that that sounds weird. Of course, we're awake. Of course, we're moving through our days. Of course, we know our name and we know the date but there's a difference between simply going through our lives on autopilot and kind of just one foot in front of the other "the next right thing" as I call it, and actively choosing each moment of each day as a fresh new experience. 4:00 - Not fitting in "And yet most of us start to settle into what society has decided what is culturally accepted. And the more we do that, the more we're just going to fit in to the crowd, the less likely we will be living our true soul path. Because I promise you this—somebody who is living their lives aligned with their souls. Someone who is awake and conscious and mindful, isn't going to fit in. They're going to stand out in some quirky ways. They're going to have something about them, that maybe you just can't put your finger on, but they just don't necessarily do what you expect or say, what, what you what you might want them to." 6:16 - Authentic Life "It's so unusual to encounter somebody who is willing to be authentic to to express how they really feel without sort of, well now I'm at work and this is the persona I wear. And now I'm with my family and this is the persona I wear. These personas are what I call "skin:s are exhausting. They fatigue every single system of our body. And most importantly, I suppose they they hide our souls, they cover up our souls, they muffle our souls. So if we're waking up, part of that process means to be living authentically, to be true to our emotions and how we're feeling, to speak truth, to be an embodiment of our truth, and to not let social norms and expectations always trump that." 8:04 - Waking up Looks Like... "So this is what waking up looks like. It's about authentic presentation of ourselves, authentic acceptance of our emotions, a kind of wholeness in our being a connection of body, mind and soul that all comes together to to be in this life that expresses and experiences each moment as original as fresh and ripe for opportunity. This is really hard to do in normal life because life is moving so fast. And it's just one thing after the next after the next meeting, upon meeting after conference call, and then the rush hour drive home and then, you know, making dinner getting the kids ready. It's just this merry go round of busyness." 9:00 - First Reason Why - We are all slowing down "And so this is the first reason that right now is the best time to wake up to move on this path of saying, I'm alive. And I have emotions and I have thoughts and they might not always point in the same direction as everybody else is facing. It's a good time, because when things slow down, we can observe more closely. It's really hard—if you picture a merry go round—to spot the faces that are going around and around. But as it starts to slow down, you can start to recognize some of the different faces. Imagine that these faces are your emotions, your feelings, your thoughts, the parts of you that are just moving through life so quickly a smile frown a sadness, an anger,

In this week's episode of creativity sparks, Susan and Laura discuss their personal quests for authenticity and the dissonance felt when What it Feels Like on the Inside doesn't match What it Looks Like on the Outside. Fresh examples of this dynamic include Game of Thrones's Emilia Clarke, Anne Hathaway's Oscar acceptance, and Marlene Dietrich's cabaret performances. They also find sparks in family history when the discovery of the Women's Timber Corp in the UK during WWII, a.k.s the Lumber Jills leads to a search for a personal connection to the Civilian Conservation Corp in the US.

3 Invaluable Lessons from Kristin Scroggin You’ve got to have a plan for attracting and retaining top Millennial talent. The people with the most influence are those that have the money and those that have the power - Millennials have the power right now in sheer numbers. If you’re not willing to adapt and spend money on training to work with Millennials you will be dealing with high turnover. This week, host Sue Dyer speaks with Kristin Scroggin the differences between the generations and the key differences between millennials and other generations. Learn how to engage the millennials on your team and to retain them and mitigate turnover. Subscribe to Construction Dream Team For the first time ever, we are offering a beta-test of the Project Scorecard for everyone to use on their project, not just our clients. About Guest Kristin Scroggin (1:40) Kristin Scroggin will be the keynote speaker at the Collaboration 2019 International Partnering Institute Conference. Kristin started a company called GenY Communication Strategies. Kristin has her Master’s in Communication Studies, her Bachelor’s in Communication Arts and has been a communications lecturer at the University of Alabama for the last eleven years. Her passion is generational diversity. Kristin’s Journey to Becoming the Founder of GenY Communication Strategies (3:25) Kristin was originally a communications lecturer and she wanted to make all of her students love her so they would want to get the best performance out of them – it didn’t work She wanted to figure out how to get her millennial students to reach their maximum capacity and started researching Millennials, then moved on to other generations to explain generational differences She’s worked with all the branches of NASA, military defense, hospitals, construction, Alabama linemen, and Solid waste The Definition of Millennials and Other Generations (6:45) Millennials are anyone born between 1985 and 2005 Kristin’s company looks at “micro-generations” in 5- to 7-year increments because things change rapidly They look at how kids are raised to see why they are how they are Millennials were raised by Flower Children (the hippies of the 60’s and 70’s), the iGen generation was raised by GenX The iGen are the first group since the GI Bill with an interest in returning to trade so we need to start focusing on high-school kids Why Should We Focus on Millennials? (10:30) About 46% of the American population is under 33 years of age Companies are alienating the new generation that’s coming in, but to stay afloat, you need to attract the top of the generation The Millennial generation is 86 million - the largest generation we’ve ever had There will be a massive flip in the way work is done when Millennials get fiscal power 2030 is the year where things will flip dramatically to Millennial power Millennials will stay in power for pretty much their entire career How Millennials Became So Different? (15:25) Almost everything that we hate about the Millennials is what we as a culture put in place. We pushed self-esteem on this generation and now their rates and standards are extremely high, they won’t just put up with things. Millennials have taken to hear the complaints from their parents that they heard as children and have responded accordingly. For instance, the parents of the Millennials had an extremely high divorce rate so many Millennials don’t marry until later or have kids. We’ve watered down what it means to be excellent, the parents of Millennials decided to give participation trophies, not the Millennials themselves. What is an Action Plan to Take to be More Effective with Millennials? (20:24) The younger generation has not been refined or polished because we’ve removed the tribal style of learning and refining and disempowered refiners We need to mentor/be a Coach to the Millennials You have to train people on soft skills - the Millennial generation is great at knowledge, but they’re missing wisdom How to Approach Learning with Millennials (24:25) We have to build rapport and relationships with our employees. You have to get people to respect you before you put a lot of commands on them. “Just because I said so” doesn’t work for this generation because that’s not what their parents said to them. A lot of why we make people wait is because we went through the same thing - the waiting game. Millennials walk away from jobs with a lot less threat because the nest they land back in is very soft. If we don’t modify in order to attract and maintain the top, we will have to deal with the bottom of the barrel. We are going to have to provide more training, continuous feedback, and catch them doing right as often as we catch them doing wrong. What it Looks Like to Mentor a Millennial (31:10) Millennials work really hard for two characteristics: Someone they respect that’s consistent, even-tempered, and authentic. They need to be a little bit afraid of you, there has to be a respect line that has been drawn. The Challenges Kristin Has Faced and How She Improved (33:02) Her original idea was to bring in some of her former students, train them, and then farm them out. All of those people were Millennials and both of the people managing them had very different management styles. The Millennials were not working well for the more rigid manager, and Kristin had to have a conversation with the other manager. Kristin was frustrated on both ends: with the hyper-office mindset and also with the Millennial side - you have to find the happy medium that works the best for your corporate culture. What Are the Differences Between the Generations? (40:40) First ½ Baby Boomers (64 – 74 years old): Raised by traditionalists, the older ones went off to WWII. They were pressured to get a job. Their job and identity are intertwined, and competition is huge for them. Second ½ Baby Boomers (54 – 64 years old): Raised by hippies and HR emerges from this generation - they appeal to the whole self and building rapport. This generation would love to retire but can’t. They got hit hard in the recession. GenX (44 – 54 years old): The least collectivistic of all of the groups of people. Most want to come in, do their work and go home. Xennials (34 – 44 years old): Latchkey children, won’t tolerate micro-managing. They don’t need social elements of generations. iGen’s (23-13-year-olds): They’re a boomerang. They don’t want to be like the older millennials and are completely addicted to their cell phones. GenZ (13-year-olds and below): They’ve experienced life post-9/11. Parents want them to be super independent. If that child was born to people later in life, they’ll still be bubble wrapped vs. children coming in now who will have more freedom. Coming to terms with your identity can be a struggle in and of itself, but when you add the perceived and real reactions of the people around you, it can seem nearly impossible. Brandon Meneses is a bright, caring, and spiritual young man who is full of life, energy, and focuses on being intentional and manifesting the life he wants to live. But he wasn’t always this way. Brandon struggled with his identity since he was in kindergarten. Realizing that he liked boys confused him and he was unsure how to approach his new sexuality. This led him down a path of depression because he wasn’t living his fullest truth but couldn’t see how to embrace his identity. His depression took a suicidal turn and in his darkest moment contemplated taking his own life while holding a knife to his wrists. This was a turning point for him and he slowly started coming out to his family and friends. Today, Brandon lives an open, happy, and healthy life as a real estate agent in South Florida. On this episode, we’re talking about why it’s important to live your fullest truth and how you can embrace coming out. Our goal is to help support and shower you with love. To show you that it’s okay to own your sexuality. We’re also exploring how we, as allies, friends, and family, can support someone coming out. Brandon also talks about when, why, and how you can start to come out to your loved ones and what to do if someone isn’t accepting of your sexuality. Have you ever struggled with your sexuality or identity? Do you know how to help someone through difficult times? How do you talk to your children about sexual identity? Sex is a beautiful gift from God. As Christian’s we have God’s permission to enjoy sex within our marriages – God invented it. We can learn not just to enjoy it but delight in intimacy with our husbands Martha Peace shares: The physical union of husband and wife is designed by God to meet God-given desire for companionship, to protect the husband and wife from temptation, and for the mutual giving and receiving of great pleasure and joy between the husband and wife. Companionship is strengthened by the private, intimate, physical bond of a married couple. Even as Christians we can too easily let the world or other voices in the church give us our view of sex when it has to come from God’s Word. God’s Word is sufficient in all ways and especially and even in our sexual relationship with our husband. On March 12, 1909, The Arizona Gazette published an article titled, "G. E. Kincaid Reaches Yuma." It was a short, mildly interesting announcement that Mr. "Kincaid" was only the second person to make the perilous boat trip down the entire course of the Colorado River, starting from Green River, Wyoming and eventually reaching Yuma, Arizona. A feat worthy of mention in the papers of course, but aside from stating that he took over 700 photographs and "Some interesting archaeological discoveries were unearthed," there was not much indication of the news which was to come next. Twenty four days later, on April 5, 1909, the newspaper ran a follow-up to their first article on the adventurous Mr. Kincaid, except this time it was full, front-page coverage on just what discoveries he'd unearthed previously. This article (also uncredited) reported that along with "G.E. Kinkaid" (his name now spelled with a "k") a "Professor S.A. Jordan" and a team from the Smithsonian had investigated what appeared to be a large network of tunnels and rooms, some filled with ancient mummies and artifacts that did not appear to be from the Western Hemisphere. And that was the end of the story. No further stories were printed by the newspaper, no knowledge by the Smithsonian about any such expedition, and no one knows if "Kinkaid" or "Jordan" ever existed, let alone the cave itself. That leaves us with two questions: is this story real, and if real, what would be the implications to world history? Tonight's Quote: "First, I would impress that the cavern is nearly inaccessible. The entrance is 1,486 feet down the sheer canyon wall. It is located on government land and no visitor will be allowed there under penalty of trespass." "G.E. Kincaid," Explorer, referring to a cave full of anomalous artifacts he discovered in the Grand Canyon.
