In this episode, Rosie is joined by Dr Emma Reay, Senior Lecturer at the University of Southampton, who researches Games Studies and Game Design. Emma has previously looked at exploring the therapeutic effects of games for mood repair, building resilience and community, and joins us to discuss games and grief. We chat about how death is interpreted in gaming, as a fail-state, and how we can look more closely at games who look at death within games as a win state. What happens when we start to uncouple loss and losing? We dive into games such as Spiritfarer, and What Remains of Edith Finch to elaborate on this. Rosie opens up about her grief during university, and how she used Kingdom as a way to recuperate and process what had happened. We look at how technology has started to change the way that we can grieve loss, and in many ways immortalise who/what we have lost. We also chat about very real narratives and storytelling through games such as That Dragon, Cancer and Before Your Eyes, and how games can be used as an immersive tool to be a part of the grief process - not just for the player, but for the developer as well. Is Papers Please too disempowering? Fortnite entirely misses the point of what The Hunger Games was trying to say.

In Episode 80 of the Davos’ Fingers podcast, we wrap up The Mystery Knight novella and the last of the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms compilation as Dunk recovers from a bad outing at the tourney.  He is forced to give up his sword, armor and horse, only to find he is also missing his squire.  Dunk tries to uncover the mystery of the missing Egg only to find and unravel a deeper plot to place a Blackfyre on the Iron Throne of Westeros. Bloodraven is the topic of Who’s That Dragon this week, as we take a deeper look at Brynden Rivers, including his time up at the wall, and what may be in store for him in the future of ASOIAF.  We follow this up with what might be the final Davos After Dark for while, so buckle in and enjoy!  Also joining us for Davos After Dark is special guest Elena from the Small Council of Ice and Fire Con.  We talk a little bit about the con, what makes it special and why you (yes YOU) should consider coming to Ice and Fire Con this year.  More information to be found at iceandfirecon.com or you can reach out directly to Elena at @TheBearHeir on twitter! In Episode 75, Matt and Scad embark on a journey through A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a series of novelletes surrounding the wanderings and adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his bald squire known simply as “Egg”.  In this first episode, Dunk buries his only friend, and the knight he squired for, and begins his own journey of knighthood.  He makes his way to a tourney at Ashford Meadow, and is joined by Egg whom he takes as his new squire.  From there it’s all about getting in the jousting lists, buying armor that will fit him as he is a beast of a man, flirting with a puppeteer, learning about his potential jousting foes, and trying to stay out of way of nobles and princes. Davos After Dark is still a thing, though you will hear us prattle on and on about what actually is a spoiler in this context.  In any event, we have done our best to avoid giving away any in-story spoilers in the main section of the cast, saving those for this special section at the end.  Also, pay attention for “Who’s That Dragon?”, a new little feature that lets us dive into a single Targaryen per episode. I recensionerna tar panelen sig an det självutlämnande spelet That Dragon, Cancer. Ryan and Amy Green were facing the unfaceable: their youngest son, Joel was diagnosed with terminal cancer after his first birthday. Producer Sruthi Pinnamaneni tells the story of how Ryan and Amy stumble onto an unlikely way of processing their experience fighting alongside Joel: they decide to turn it into a video game. In the end, they find themselves facing what might be, for a game designer or a parent, the hardest design problem ever. Correction: In the original audio we stated that the survival rate of childhood AT/RT cancer is 50% over five years. But studies suggest the survival rate is 50% over two years. The audio has been updated to reflect this change. For an extended version of this story and a bunch more incredible stories, go check out Reply All. Special thanks to Eilis O’ Neill, Jon Hillman, and Josh Larson.
