Today's guest is pioneering sweeping innovations in access to maternal and perinatal mental health care, changing the face of care for many women and families. The truth is that too many people are falling through the cracks in our US healthcare system, especially in the perinatal period. Join us to learn what Mamaya Health is doing to help revamp the system! Amy Green is the founder and CEO of Mamaya Health and the Nashville Collaborative Counseling Center. Over the last ten years, Amy has served as a clinical social worker, adjunct professor, nonprofit founder, and entrepreneur. Through her experience with pregnancy loss and a deep passion for creating access to care, Amy founded the NCCC in 2019 to change the landscape of mental health care available to those navigating pregnancy, postpartum, infertility, and loss. Mamaya Health was founded in 2023 as a subsidiary of NCCC to support the next stage of scale and growth of maternal mental health care. Amy is proud to be part of the EY Winning Women of North America 2023 Cohort and a recipient of the Nashville Emerging Entrepreneurs of 2022 Award from the Nashville Business Journal. She received her MSW from the University of Buffalo with a concentration in trauma-informed care and human rights, a certification from the University of Massachusetts in Integrated Care Management, and a certification in maternal mental health from Postpartum Support International. Today it's so much fun to have my friend Amy Lynn Green. She writes beautiful stories set during WWII often in homefront settings. Today we're talking about her brand new release The Foxhole Victory Tour. Y'all, I adored this story set in a small USO tour — the ensemble tour is wonderful and the setting is unique with most of it being in North Africa. We had so much fun talking about the challenges and fun of writing a story with so many characters — she ends up writing so much more than you read. We talked about how she knew she was a writer and the advice she would give herself if she could go back in time. She also told me that she finds joy in the process of overwriting and then editing down to the core story. It works so well for her books and for us as readers. This is such a fun conversation. Things We Didn't Say by Amy Lynn Green was a book out of the ordinary. She weaves a tale using only letters, telegraphs, and notes. This piece of history was unknown to us, German POWs were brought to America to work with farmers. We were taken back in time to January 1944 to Ironside Lake, Minnesota. We met Johanna Berglund, a determined linguistic student that was coerced into returning to her hometown to work as a translator at the nearby POW camp. She couldn't wait to leave her hometown and now, ironically, she is headed back. Peter Ito, Jo's closest friend, is a language instructor at a school for military intelligence officers, he encourages her to do her best to give Ironside Lake a second chance. Peter has a lot of wisdom: “God never promised us an easy path. But He did say He'd be with us through it all.” “The past is never in the past. But we have to have the courage to move beyond it.” “We can do anything we must. How we do it is up to us.” “Don't hold on so tightly to one idea of what you want that you don't let God push you In another direction.” Jo was a guarded: “I don't have enough charm to spare and have to ration it for general interaction with humanity.” “Real life is dreadfully tedious, the way it interrupts reading.” She cleverly began her letters to Peter with German idioms, such as: “To add one's mustard=put in one's opinion” “The fish begins to stink at the head=the source of trouble is often at the top” “To howl along with the wolves=do as those around you are doing” As Jo's adventure continues she battles with owner of the newspaper, Mr. McHenry, who prints anonymous negative letters about the POWs in the name of freedom of expression. Her attempt to show him the wrongness of his practice is priceless. “As I see, no one should be able to sling mud from a dark and shadowed corner…” Pastor Sorenson wrote, “Sometimes showing grace breaks us before it heals us. Forgiveness can feel like a betrayal of justice.” Powerful message from a man that lost his son in battle from the same place the POWs were captured, yet he agrees to let the prisoners attend church. Why was Jo on trial for treason? What will be revealed in the trial? Will Peter survive his time in the army? Who was Jo's scholarship donor that told her to choose the better dream, not the bigger dream?” How can letters alone paint a picture of days gone by, but connect so amazingly to the world we live in? The Blackout Book Club is a unique WWII story set on the coast of Maine that highlights the power of books and the importance of connections. The story follows five main characters who are all dealing with secret issues that are all brought to light. Amy Lynn Green beautifully weaves their lives together and shows how we all need community to thrive. This is our first Amy Lynn Green novel but for sure not our last. She vanished on Sept. 30, 2002, after being dropped off on the campus of the Ohio Valley Medical Center for an appointment. It wasn't the first time Nancy had gone missing. Just a few months before her disappearance, she was gone for a couple of days before emerging from the woods near Wheeling Hospital. She admitted to her daughter that she had planned to remain hidden, but a raccoon scared her, and while she was running a member of law enforcement spotted her and returned her home. The local PD never conducted a search of the area Green disappeared from, instead leaving it up to her family to search. For many musicians, recording in a professional studio can be an overwhelming experience at first. There is a lot going on, it's all very technical and mostly incomprehensible. Jargon is thrown around. Things often move fast. For a while, I have been thinking about doing an episode that explains, in the simple terms, the recording process for musicians.To help me, I asked singer-songwriter Corrie Lynn Green to join me in a conversation. Corrie is relatively new to recording, and I thought her questions would be a useful way to cover these topics. Some musicians are very technically adept, probably because they have learned to do their own recording at home. But some may have misconceptions, or otherwise might benefit from a better understanding of the technology. Others don't really want to know. They want to focus all their energy on their music and performance in the studio, and leave all the dull, technical stuff to others. This episode is for them, although I suspect that even seasoned studio players might find some useful tidbits. For most people, the more you understand, the better you can use the technology of the studio. That makes better recorded music.
