Art and fashion are being redefined by new, creative voices who transcend the old high and low art boundaries. “Visual artists were thought to be less serious if they collaborated with fashion brands or if they appeared in fashion magazines, and now you have folks operating in a real post-medium condition,” says the writer, editor and curator Antwaun Sargent, on Episode 5 of Rodeo Drive – The Podcast. “It's really encouraging to see Carrie Mae Weems, for example, just shoot the latest Prada campaign.”Sargent is the author and curator of The New Black Vanguard: Photography Between Art and Fashion, the acclaimed publication and touring exhibition that is on view at Cleveland Museum of Art through mid-September 2022. He is also a director at Gagosian, a global network of art galleries, and he is currently working on an exhibition developed with the late Virgil Abloh, former artistic director of Louis Vuitton's menswear collection. Abloh's fluidity was influential on the boundaryless creativity today, says Sargent. “One day, one hour, he's designing a dress, the next hour he's designing a sculpture, the next he's making music.”Sargent talks with host Pari Ehsan about the Abloh show, about the dissolving of boundaries between art and fashion today, and about diversity and inclusion and how to do it authentically. “It's less for me about some stale notion of inclusivity or diversity, and more about allowing folks to fully express themselves in this space that they should have always had a claim to,” he says. This fluidity between disciplines – art, fashion, food, publishing – is also visible on Rodeo Drive, where luxury brands and fashion houses that once mainly sold clothing now offer curated exhibition and retail spaces and even restaurants. Field Correspondent Jason E.C. Wright checks out stores including Saint Laurent and its current Rive Droite installation conceived by the house's Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello and exclusive to its Paris and Rodeo Drive boutiques.Rive Droite features surfboards and furniture made in collaboration with Hervet Manufacturier, along with lighters and playing cards, branded headphones, footwear and bags, vinyl, art and design magazines and books. This really expands on how “the art collector is intersecting in the fashion world and those from the fashion side are collecting objects,” says Wright, adding, “it's a beautiful way of seeing this evolution of the stores being more than just a retail space and a point of experience for the world.”Season Three of Rodeo Drive – The Podcast is presented by the Rodeo Drive Committee with the support of the City of Beverly Hills, The Hayman Family, Two Rodeo Drive, Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, the Beverly Hills Conference & Visitors Bureau, and MCM.Listen to Rodeo Drive – The Podcast and subscribe, rate and review wherever you get your podcasts.Watch moments from the series here and on YouTube.Check back in regularly for what's next in the series.Season Three Credits:Executive Producer: Lyn WinterHost: Pari EhsanField Correspondent: Jason E.C. Antwaun Sargent became a director at Gagosian gallery in 2021 after a decade as a writer and curator, most notably of the book and now exhibition "The New Black Vanguard: Photography Between Art and Fashion." In this podcast, he discusses the global success of the New Black Vanguard Show and his upcoming collaboration with late designer and artist Virgil Abloh. That exhibition will open in June at the Brooklyn Museum. Social Works, his first show for Gagosian, was a major event in Chelsea. There were lines around the block for admission. Gagosian's Chelsea galleries have previously seen such lines for shows about Picasso's late works, curated by his biographer John Richardson, and a blockbuster Monet exhibition mounted by former MoMA curator John Elderfield. Social works was so successful, Gagosian accelerated the launch of Social Works two in London from 2022 to last fall. In this podcast, Sargent tells us of the potential for a third social workshop and where it might be held, as well as a series of shows he's putting on at Gagosian's 74th street location in New York.

Art writer, curator, fashion figure and man about town, Antwaun Sargent discusses the May/June 2021 issue of Art in America which focuses on New Talent. In the 1950s and 60s, Art in America ran a series of regular features and issues that sought to identify up-and-coming artists whose work would be lasting and meaningful for the future. Instead of approaching the idea of New Talent as a singular benchmark, Sargent talks about how he took the approach of assembling a group of artists and writers who could better show the multiplicity of what New Talent means. Sargent argues against the idea of equating the idea of New Talent with youth. Instead, this issue features artists ranging from painters Deborah Roberts and Amy Sherald to photographers Tyler Mitchell and Clifford Prince King and artists working in different media like Precious Okoyomon or Allana Clarke or Qualeasha Wood. Above all, the issue brings new voices into the conversation about art. “We talk about audiences all the time,” Sargent says, “but we're still allowing all of that to be defined by a very limited number of folks. This magazine is an opportunity to push back against some of those notions—about what a critic can be, about what an art writer can be.”

The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

By the time Antwaun Stanley entered the University of Michigan in the late aughts, he was already 15 years into what could be considered to be a successful singing career. He was signed as a contemporary gospel artist, had made the rounds on TV shows and singing contests, had been through a series of managers, producers and handlers who all recognized the immense electricity in his singing and his stage persona.  Meanwhile, he was also just a regular kid from Flint, Michigan, raised by a single mother and trying to walk the straight and narrow path. That dual identity was part of his journey almost from the very beginning - like a superhero. On Sunday mornings he was a star, but by the next day he was back to being a regular student. And when he got to college, he tried his best to blend in, joining an a cappella group and singing with student bands, while at the same time trying to manage his career as a budding gospel star. Even today, he lives with that same duality. While his work with Vulfpeck and collaborations with Scary Pockets and Cory Wong have elevated his notoriety, he still chooses to stay close to home, splitting his time between Flint and Ann Arbor.  Antwaun recently released released a collaborative project with producer Tyler Duncan called Ascension, a high class dance pop project that gave each a chance to stretch out and do what they do best.  We talked recently about walking the line between spiritual and secular music, managing the responsibility to his fans and his own desire to explore, how he sees his career as “one giant experiment” and “a constant process of discovery”, and of course, his experience in Vulfpeck. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast

Season Two: Episode 7 "Tea Talk Spotlight” with Antwaun, CEO/Founder of R.A.W (real always winning) He candidly & authentically shares his walk through grief due to the sudden transition of his dad. As he suffered alone for months he realized that he had to reach out. He also realized that he could no longer hide behind the mask of grief & depression which birthed his brand R.A.W In this episode we are talking about the face behind the mask of depression. Young men deal with depression but often suffer in silence due to the stigma behind it. This was a very powerful podcast because my oldest son shares his walk with depression due to the transition of their dad Devanrmoni Johnson. Powerful message

New York City is a manifestation of where art, fashion, photography, and culture intersect. Even in the city that serves as a saturated cultural playground, there are few individuals who better represent and encapsulate such a spirit as masterfully as art critic, writer, and curator Antwaun Sargent, or Steven Irby, photographer and co-founder of Street Dreams Magazine. Hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas are joined by the two culture juggernauts to discuss the junction connecting photography, magazines, and fashion. But first, the quick hits reveal that Virgil’s back in the office and a new Off-White x Nike sneaker has already been in the works (1:50). The Vapor Street is finally available after it made its first appearance a few seasons ago during the brand’s women’s runway show. After talking a couple sneaker misses, the cast is fired up with the Kiko Kostadinov x ASICS GEL-KORIKA along with its eccentric campaign featuring Juergen Teller and his dad bod (5:14). Speaking of chunky, Antwaun pinpoints how GOLF le FLEUR* and Converse’s all-new silhouette, the GLF Gianno Ox, seems like it came straight out of an episode of Doug (6:43). Will Tyler, the Creator be infusing his pastel palettes into high-end fashion any time soon? Jian and Noah pit Antwaun and Steve against each other in a game of “Boutique or Gallery,” where the two guests guess whether the names dropped are fashion boutiques or art galleries (18:50). Antwaun flexes his knowledge of galleries before moving on to talk about his first book, The New Black Vanguard: Photography Between Art and Fashion which delves deeper into the conversation on black representation in art, specifically the new generation of photographers who are bridging art and fashion (23:01). He seamlessly transitions into Street Dreams Magazine, asking Steve to share his motivations for creating the publication (30:43). The project builds upon his passion for photography, and has initiated a phenomenon that transcends the original confines of social media and its relationship with the medium of photography. This episode’s segment of “What’d You Cop?” saw a healthy week for Antwaun and Steve (39:07). The former got his hands on the new Pyer Moss sneakers, a gallery shirt from Grace Wales Bonner’s exhibition at the Serpentine, and cologne from Le Labo. Steve copped a pair of Noah (hemmed and tailored) suit pants, a Futura toy from his weekend in LA, and Uber Eats throughout the week. Sir Sargent, as he’s known on social media, represents a new wave of art writers and critics focused on Black contemporary art and its evolving role in an international African diasporic consciousness. He was born in Chicago as Antwaun Sargent, and has called New York home since 2011. When he first arrived in New York City, he was a kindergarten teacher, but he soon discovered his interest in telling the stories of Black artists and sharing his insights on into a contemporary art world often perceived as opaque and inaccessible. He’s since co-curated his first exhibition, spoken at countless events, and is now working on a book. I invited our news editor, Jasmine Weber, to join me in this conversation to learn about Sargent’s thought on a scene that is getting more attention than ever. A special thanks to Amani Fela for providing the music for this episode.
