From Sparks to Light - Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times
At the age of 19, Manizha Wafeq traveled to Oklahoma City with 13 women to participate in Peace Through Business, a program to support women from her native Afghanistan to become entrepreneurs. No sooner had they arrived in the United States when it became clear that three of the women did not speak enough English to follow the lectures. Manizha volunteered to serve as an interpreter. She taught them to type in Farsi on their laptops, creating an alternate keyboard to the English one they had. Sitting beside them, she assisted them in writing their business plans, all the while working on her own. The rest, as they say, is herstory. Now, more than 20 years later, she has garnered a wealth of experience in development, with a dedicated focus on women's empowerment and gender equality. She has positively impacted the lives of thousands of women. In her role as the PEACE THROUGH BUSINESS country facilitator and trainer, she has directly trained and mentored approximately 800 women from over 17 provinces of Afghanistan in the last 17 years. She has co-authored a training manual on Business Start-ups and contributed to the creation of “Gender and the Legal Framework of Afghanistan.” Manizha Wafeq has learned valuable lessons through years of working to change the lives of women in her native Afghanistan, a country of 41 million people that has seen dramatic cultural shifts in recent years. "Long term commitment, patience and building your network with the right people" are key. She admits to a revolutionary streak in her personality. She is someone who is not afraid to take on whatever challenges await her. But big change takes time. “You have to keep on learning,” she says. If you don't learn, you will never succeed. Passion only goes so far. You have to be well versed. You have to take the time to learn what you need to make the changes you want to make.” She is the winner of several awards such as the Enterprising Women Magazine's Advocacy and Leadership Award, Leadership Award from the National Business Association of the US, and Young Activist Award from the Afghan Women's Network and the Afghan Lower House of the Parliament. She also won the award for the best membership services and entrepreneurship development of SMEs at the 11th World Chambers Congress. She has MBA from the American University of Afghanistan and she is the mother of a 9 year old daughter. To learn more about Robert Maggio, the composer of "Where Love is Love," our theme music, please check out his website. To learn more about Suzanne, visit her website. Manizha - Russia's Eurovision 2021 artist - has had her first rehearsal of "Russian Woman" at Eurovision 2021 in Rotterdam. Here's our first review and reaction. You can read our full reviews on the wiwibloggs website: https://www.wiwibloggs.com
If you push Manizha down, she just gets up stronger. In the weeks after winning Russia's Eurovision 2021 selection with her song "Russian Woman", she faced an onslaught of hate from people who said she wasn't Russian enough since she was born in Tajikistan. “How do Russians look?" she says in our Zoom interview. "Can you explain it? Can you describe it? I can. I can look in the mirror and say that I am a Russian woman and I am proud...My mission is to not give up. I know that all the haters want me to give up… I have my voice. I have my music. And, I have my family. I’m not gonna cry because I’m going to Eurovision.” And when she gets there she'll use her song to call on Russian women to stand up for their rights. “I’m doing all this because of Russian women — to say ‘Come on, girl. You can do anything you want to do.’ Say good-bye to patriarchy and let’s think about gender equality in our country. Let’s think about something really, really beautiful like your strength, your personal strength." We also discuss abusive relationships, how her song is ironic and does NOT fit in the "drama genre", how her mother worked four jobs at the same time (including cleaning lady and cooker) to help the family make it after immigrating. "My mom inspired me so much so that’s why I will not give up and I will not listen to all these haters." Manizha will sing "Russian Woman" for Russia at Eurovision 2021 in Rotterdam. Interview: William - https://www.instagram.com/williamleeadams

Wiwiblogger Renske writes: "Taking us from the fields of the Emperor to the destruction of war, Manizha powerfully tells us that despite all backlash, you can 'stand up and go'. It's a mix of styles and poetry that we have never seen at Eurovision before, making it perhaps one of the most unique entries in recent years."
