She holds a B.S. in Business Logistics from Penn State and an MBA from Drexel University. The breadth of her experience in business extends to supply chain logistics, purchasing, global scheduling and e-commerce, where she served in key roles in companies to include Honeywell, Gap and IKEA. She is the author of Dark, Dirty, Dangerous: The Vibrant Future of Manufacturing. Trotman welcomed her two sons during her time at IKEA, giving her firsthand experience with the difficulties prenatal and postnatal mothers face in their professional and personal lives. While on maternity leave, she founded the Belly Button Boutique, an online shop for pre- and postnatal women. Over the span of eight years, her business expanded to celebrity and international clientele, earning her features in PEOPLE and on NBC 10, CBS News, HuffPost Live and more. Finding A Core Value Match Hiring new employees is difficult, but finding the right fit virtually is an entirely new challenge. While many companies work with teams they have never met in person - it can feel impossible to spot the wrong person in a mobile world. Unfortunately, if you don't have the right practices in place - it is a lot easier for someone to fake it. When analyzing if a potential hire aligns with your company's core values, implement core values cards during the hiring process to get a better understanding of where your prospect lies. Not Going Anywhere When you feel attacked in the workplace or are experiencing criticism, it's natural to want to retreat or get defensive. But, there are better and more effective ways to respond. It's important to make sure that everyone involved knows that their concerns were heard, are valid, and most importantly you are not going anywhere. We all have a choice to continue to stay in the circumstance or not. If you're the employee in this situation and are dealing with a superior - you should come to the conversation armed with data. Spend time role-playing the conversation, to eliminate the element of fear. Don't let the conversation be the first time you've talked it through.

Business is easy, people are challenging. During this week's episode of the Intentional Greatness® podcast, my daughter Ali and I share our insights on communication best practices in the workplace. In 2021 things are going to get a lot messier before they get cleaner. It's important to know what employees really want right now and what they're willing to trade to have those things. Throughout our conversation we discuss core values and how to make sure that someone is a right fit during the hiring process. Finding A Core Value Match Hiring new employees is difficult, but finding the right fit virtually is an entirely new challenge. While many companies work with teams they have never met in person – it can feel impossible to spot the wrong person in a mobile world. Unfortunately, if you don't have the right practices in place – it is a lot easier for someone to fake it. When analyzing if a potential hire aligns with your company core values, implement core values cards during the hiring process to get a better understanding of where your prospect lies. Not Going Anywhere When you feel attacked in the workplace or are experiencing criticism, it's natural to want to retreat or get defensive. But, there are better and more effective ways to respond. It's important to make sure that everyone involved knows that their concerns were heard, are valid, and most importantly you are not going anywhere. We all have a choice to continue to stay in the circumstance or not. If you're the employee in this situation and are dealing with a superior – you should come to the conversation armed with data. Spend time role playing the conversation, to eliminate the element of fear. Don't let the conversation be the first time you've talked it through.

People are just tired. Tired of their current circumstances and mentally exhausted. While there have been many discussions surrounding burnout – there has not been a lot of talk focused on ways to combat it. During our conversation, my daughter, Ali, and I share insights into what we really need when we're experiencing burnout and how to avoid it altogether. Finding Peace Within Habits If you're experiencing burnout due to overexertion or being overworked, one of the first things you should do is take better care of yourself. It may feel impossible to dedicate time to things like movement or meditation – but it's necessary. You have to make the choice to do the things you don't want to do for the lasting effects. When forming habits it's important to look back and think about how you've felt doing this in the past. Healthy habits are not about instant gratification. The Power Within When you feel burned out, it's likely because you are sick of doing the same things that don't fuel you or fulfill you. When you feel this way, it's important to remember that you are in control. You have the power to change your behavior, surroundings, or anything else that does not serve you. We put too much emphasis on what we think we should be doing, instead of what we need. In order to truly exile burnout – we must start paying attention to the things that make us feel good and do more of that.

While we are still on a journey of understanding and evolving our work lives, we have an opportunity to create a better work culture. My daughter, Ali Stieglbauer, is joining us once again to discuss work culture in our new normal. During our conversation, Ali and I share insights about what work culture really is and how we can maintain it, even while distanced. Creating the Rules of Engagement Work culture can really be defined as the core values and guidelines that everyone agrees to follow. These rules are typically unwritten and picked up on from behavioral cues and norms. When we are no longer having a shared experience in the office, we miss out on these behavioral cues – leaving everyone to make it up as they go! It's crucial to set standards and guidelines through meeting frameworks and regular communication. Finding Discipline Prior to 2020, most employers couldn't imagine allowing their employees to work from home. Many thought they wouldn't be able to trust that their employees were actually working. They weren't sure how they would be able to hold them accountable. Surprisingly, productivity has largely increased. Employees find that they really need to show up and get results, as a way to showcase their work.

Go After What You Deserve Confidence is a major part of success in your personal and professional lives. You need to allow and tolerate what YOU think you deserve in every situation. When you take on that perspective, I believe it gives you leverage when you have to make difficult decisions. Owning Your Mistakes Vulnerability is admitting what you don't know, owning up to your mistakes, and being honest when you're scared or unsure instead of pretending. It is extremely hard to make ourselves vulnerable because as leaders, many of us have conditioned ourselves to conceal our imperfections. There is a great deal of fear associated with vulnerability, and when we show any signs of self-doubt, it feels like we are jeopardizing the image we've spent so long developing. Honesty puts us at risk of being exposed as a fraud, but when we make decisions based on what other people think, the outcome is often much worse. Authenticity and humility are key to strong leadership, and vulnerability is the bridge that connects them. Excellence and Perfection When we become vulnerable, we are in one of our most powerful states because we are present, authentic, and exceedingly human. The strange thing is that when we make ourselves vulnerable, we often feel weak and exposed. It is not a bad thing, it is just something we have to get used to. Vulnerability is a state in which we can create powerful connections, and that it is key to achieving excellence. Perfection is about managing other people's perceptions; excellence is about managing the problem itself. No matter what happens in the face of adversity, you've made it through enough mistakes and survived to make it through the next challenge.

It wasn't an easy year by any means, but it gave many of us the time we needed to reset and recalibrate. As we prepare for what's ahead in 2021, we have an opportunity to recognize how far we've come and let go of everything that is holding us back. We need to dig deep and find that sense of optimism, because optimism is the key to resilience. My daughter, Ali Stieglbauer, is joining us once again to provide an additional perspective to this discussion. During our conversation, Ali and I share insights about what we are doing to stay resilient so we can push forward in these difficult times. Finding Inward Optimism “15 Days to Slow the Spread” quickly turned into ten months of uncertainty with no end in sight. We continue to do our part, but at the same time, most of us are DONE with this! We are beaten down, tired, out of jobs, and bored out of our minds. Yet, we still feel the pressure to wake up every morning and bring our best selves to every interaction. The reality is that these are not normal times. There is a lot more weight on our shoulders, but there is also a lot more time to deal with it. We need to step back and rest to process everything that is happening. We have been following most of the pandemic protocols for a long time now—they are unfortunately becoming second nature. So use your rest days as a chance to figure out what is really making you tired. If you can address that, you will be significantly more resilient. Consistency vs. Certainty The hard truth that many fail to realize is that we've never had certainty in our lives. All of us have been dealing with uncertainty long before the pandemic took place. We lived our lives with consistency, stability, and the illusion of control, and there is comfort in those things. At the same time, we can still find ways to create consistency and stability to find some sense of normalcy in these strange times. When we draw the separation between certainty and consistency, it becomes easier to move forward.

It is not good for human beings, and too much uncertainty subjects us to a wide range of emotions we didn't ask for. I have been thinking about different ways we can cope with these emotions. Most of us experience life in the past, present, and future. But if you spend too much time in any of them, it will start to shape your thoughts and emotions. You will experience fear if you are focused on the past. The past causes us to second guess our decisions and hopelessly run through all of the alternative scenarios. We can't live there. We have to let the past inform us so we can move forward prepared. Normally, we strive to live in the present. But right now, it is a state that we almost can't escape. In the current state of the pandemic, we are making decisions for the future without enough time to process them. The overwhelming input makes it difficult to actively seek opportunities. It leads to decision fatigue, where the decisions are ultimately made for us. And finally, the future produces a sense of worry if we spend too much time there. This pandemic is unprecedented, so we are going to make mistakes. For many of us, the field of vision is limited. We are overwhelmed by the unknown and the complexity of our situations, but thoughts come before feelings. The present is where you get grounded, and it is where you find what is constant and true. For business owners, this has to do with who you are and the business you're in. That stuff never changes, so lean into it. Set an overarching goal, make a plan, and execute. You have the ability to stay in the driver's seat if that is where you want to be.

We are learning to navigate new challenges that test our ability to think, collaborate, and problem-solve. But we have to remember that we've never encountered something like this before. Our best option is to focus on things we can control because small victories will pull us through this. We have to become resilient leaders who are confident in our decisions, and we have to write a new playbook because the answers we seek don't exist. I put together some of my thoughts in hopes that they will help you take control of every facet of your life during these difficult times. Manage your family and home first. With everyone back from school and work, household chaos is the only chaos you can control. Figure out where you best serve your team members and clients as everyone operates remotely. Reprioritize and rescope as you get new information. Being nimble, responsive, and flexible is a necessity. Structure your day-to-day around your ‘new normal.' Maintain your daily regiment to avoid getting sloppy or unmotivated. Develop your digital workflow. Digital work can be taxing, so make sure you set up shop in an ideal work environment breaks and stop-times mapped out for each day. Form practices and habits that make your new work environment more sustainable. Seek inspiration, joy, and collaboration to maintain a positive digital work environment. Stay connected with your peers, friends, and family to diminish the sense of isolation. Go through your spreadsheets and make sure all of your autopay and nonessential services are paused until we gain a better understanding of how this situation will play out.

My guest for this episode is Jan Berthold. Janice is a Senior Vice President with Heffernan Insurance and one of the few brokers who works with clients on a "Referral Only" basis. Prior to merging her firm with Heffernan, Janice was President and CEO of J. Berthold Insurance Service Inc. and a Principal of All West Insurance Brokers, one of the top five closely held insurance brokerage firms in Silicon Valley. She has over 25 years of commercial insurance experience and holds the insurance designations of Professional Workers’ Compensation Advisor, Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, Chartered Life Underwriter, and Chartered Financial Consultant.  She has been an Advisor for the California State Senate Committee on Insurance and is a featured writer for the Business Journal. Janice has received numerous awards. In 1999, she was named Small Business Owner of the Year by the San Jose Mercury News and the Women's Fund. In addition, The Business Journal named her Enterprising Woman of the Year in 2003.  In 2016 she was the YWCA’s Silicon Valley 2016 Tribute to Women Honoree Janice is a graduate of the University of San Francisco. Diane Medley and her business partner founded their CPA firm to treat people in a way that they can achieve their dreams. When Medley became managing partner of Mountjoy Chilton Medley, she was named the first female managing partner of a CPA firm in this U.S. region and the only female managing partner of a Top 100 firm, as well as a founding member of a firm. In her role she determines and executes Mountjoy Chilton Medley’s strategic goals and has led the firm through several mergers and acquisitions. Under her management, Medley has helped make MCM the largest CPA firm in the region, with five regional offices and nearly 300 employees. Medley, a graduate of the University of Louisville, actively serves on several chairs for local foundations and organizations. She holds numerous accounting credentials and has earned many awards, including Enterprising magazine’s Enterprising Woman of the Year and NAWBO Louisville’s Owner of the Year. Medley is married with four children and five grandchildren. She and her husband reside near Louisville, Ky.

Heather Howell’s desire to inspire her children and fear of failure power her in selecting her projects and in growing beverage brands. As director of innovation for Brown-Forman Corporation, Howell is responsible for developing the global portfolio expansion strategy and acts as brand leader for Collingwood, a premium blended Canadian whiskey. Howell joined Brown-Forman in 2015. She previously worked for Rooibee Red Tea, where she served as chief tea officer, CEO and, board member, helping take the organic tea brand from the farmers market to the national market. Howell has been recognized numerous times, including Ernst & Young’s 2013 E.D.G.E. Award, a 2014 Enterprising Woman to Watch Award from Business First, and a 2013 finalist for the Business Leader of the Year Award. She is also president emeritus of the National Association of Women MBAs and serves on the board of Republic Bank. She resides in Louisville with her husband, Dr. Steven Howell, a pediatric eye surgeon, and their two children: son,Teague, and daughter,Juliana. Amanda Gorecki is an advanced registered nurse practitioner and founder of Healing Waters and Pure MD® Skin Science. She has a BSN from Seattle Pacific University and an MSN from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She trained at Harborview Medical Center and Duke University where she worked as an emergency room nurse and nurse practitioner for the Department of Neurosurgery before venturing into private business. Gorecki was named Enterprising Woman of the Year in 2014 by Enterprising Women Magazine; she is an Atlanta member of the WPO (Women’s Presidents Organization) Chapter 1, received the Champions of Respect Award from theYWCA Women’s Shelter, has been nominated for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, and was named one of the 40 Under 40 by the Wichita Business Journal. NABWIC Talks with JocCole “J.C.” Burton realized she had an aptitude for engineering when, at nine-year old she took apart, then reassembled the family tv set. J.C.'s parents nurtured her analytical skills, developing her into a first-rate problem solver creating family game night, called “the calculus challenge”. A California native, J.C. has a degree in Chemical Engineering from UC Berkeley, post grad of Georgia State Univ. and is a Licensed Realtor. She merged her talents under her leadership of Woodline Solutions, a Construction Consulting Firm. The focus of the firm is threefold: Construction Consulting, Energy + Water Consulting (also known as Sustainability Consulting), and Facility Management. Woodline provides services from Texas to Virginia.  She has been recognized my many organizations as a global leader in sustainability and has been recognized by the White House as a “Champion of Change – Clean Energy”.  She has spoken at the White House on green technologies and environmental issues in the construction industry.  Among other industry awards, she has received most notably are: Associated Builders' & Contractors Eagle Award; Enterprising Woman of the Year, 2012; Atlanta Tribune Woman to Watch 2011. She has chaired several industry advisory boards including Urban Land Institute, US Green Building Council, United Negro College Fund Advancement for Sustainability to name a few.
