Join us for our first director's special episode! This week, we share our thoughts on Deewar and Silsila, two of Yash Chopra's most iconic films.
This week, we hear from artists who've been making a difference in their local communities. Sudanese filmmaker Hajooj Kuka first spoke to The Cultural Frontline in 2019 when he was filming the protests taking place after Sudanese President Al Bashir had been deposed following 30 years of authoritarian rule. Anu Anand catches up with Hajooj to hear about the community filmmaking projects he's been undertaking through his local neighborhood committee. The Russian Tajik musician and campaigner Manizha moved with her family to Russia aged four to escape the civil war in Tajikistan. A successful singer songwriter, she was the last person to represent Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest. She explains how many of her concerts have been cancelled due to her opposition to the war in Ukraine and how her music supports the work of her SILSILA foundation which helps those who have experienced domestic violence, along with championing the rights of refugees and migrants. Shine Tani is a successful Kenyan artist with his art gallery at the centre of the Banana Hill community just north of Nairobi. Shine came from a poor background, surviving by begging and performing as an acrobat on the streets with his brothers. Self-taught, he now represents over 100 artists from across the continent and his work has helped change the status of local art in the country.

Silsila ye chahat ka song Shreya Ghoshal cover by Martina Motwani
In this episode, we learn about what's happening in Bhopal today: a parallel crisis that was brewing under Bhopal at the same time as the gas tragedy, also the direct result of the Union Carbide factory.
This episode's topic is so literally monumental, we brought in three experts to help us bring it to life. We're going back more than 3,000 years, to New Kingdom Egypt, to visit two of the job sites that contributed to the production of some of the ancient world's most iconic monuments. We start with the dynamic duo of Dr Maria Nilsson and John Ward, Nat Geo Explorers and archaeologists who have spent over ten years uncovering the secrets of Gebel el Silsila, the little-known quarry site that supplied the stone for pretty much every major temple you'd see along a ‘hit parade' Nile River tour. Then, joined by Egyptologist Sofia Aziz, we zero in on the Valley of the Kings site, Deir el Medina, where extraordinarily detailed archaeological and historical records reveal the lives of one group of ancient Egyptian construction workers in astonishing detail. Think worker strikes and social media are a modern phenomenon? Think again. As with so many things, it seems the Egyptians did it first. So, let's tread the dust of two of their most prolific building sites. Like an Egyptian, of course.

SUNDAYS, 9:00PM 'til 11:00PM (central) - The INTREPID RADIO PROGRAM with Scotty Roberts and John Ward - www.intrepidradio.com and www.ipbn-fm.com/listen-chat.html Joining the lads this time 'round, is none other than Dr. Maria Nilsson, archaeologist and Mission Director of the Gebel el Silsila Epigraphic Survey Project and Lead Archaeologist at Gebel el Silsila, Egypt. Following the disputation on her doctoral thesis on Hellenistic Queen Arsinoë II's crown at Gothenburg University in 2010 Maria now focuses her research on the relatively new topic "pseudo script", primarily Ptolemaic and Roman quarry marks in Gebel el Silsila, Egypt. That research has now lead her to the new discovery of the lost Temple of Khenu at Gebel el Silsila, where with John Ward and her phenomenal team, they are continuing to make discoveries and expand the preservaion of the site and its antiquities.
