Medical student Rishma Jivan discusses her article, "Medical curriculum 2.0: Integrating technology and innovation in medical education." She argues for an urgent update to medical training, embedding technology and innovation as core components to prepare future physicians for a digitally transformed health care landscape. Rishma highlights the necessity for medical students to become active contributors to health technology, not just end-users, to address pressing issues like physician burnout and patient distrust, and to bridge the gap between tech development and clinical needs. The conversation explores integrating concepts like the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) approach from the tech world into medical thinking, fostering collaboration between medical professionals and technology developers. She proposes a curriculum enriched with hands-on experiences, partnerships with innovators, and inclusion of diverse voices to ensure new solutions are equitable and effective. The key takeaway is: It is imperative to evolve medical education to equip the next generation of physicians with the skills to co-create and implement innovative solutions for better patient care and a more sustainable health care system. What happens when you leave a thriving medical practice—not because you're burned out, but because your definition of success changes? Rishma Walji, our guest this week on Money Tales, spent two decades as a doctor where she helped others navigate emotionally complex decisions about life, hormones and healthcare. But when her own crossroads arrived, Rishma made a bold pivot choosing family, personal growth and intentional living over her credentials and paycheck. Rishma shares the emotional calculus behind pivoting away from the work she trained so long for, how she reconciled ambition with motherhood and why her definition of success had to expand beyond income. Rishma Walji trained as a Naturopathic Doctor and PhD. She spent over 20 years in clinical practice helping patients make big decisions about health, hormones and family. She's currently writing a book about intentional decision making. A lot of her work is related to awareness and emotion that can either guide or mislead our life choices. She is host of the XO Conversations Podcast and a TEDx speaker.

My amazing book-loving and creative friend, Verzana Mokiem, shares with us her story. We chat and laugh a lot in this episode. We talk about the bigger goals, living the life, and being loved by family and friends. But also about getting overwhelmed by (doing) the dishes and eating pie. Verzana is in legislation and owns and runs a bookstore with her friend, Rishma. You can find their bookstore on www.Atlantis.sr and on Facebook (@atlantisbooksandmore). Her quotes are really cool too: > "The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it." - Oscar Wilde. > Loosely translated: "Life is short, eat pie." LOL. > "For the Love of Books" is one of her favourite quotes to use to write on the packaging and share with others :) Tag us when you get creative with the quotes. Misha and her husband had a marriage that seemed perfect from the outside. They were close friends and partners who had been together for years. However, there was one issue that they had been struggling with for a long time - intimacy. Every time they tried to be more intimate, Misha would experience pain, which made it difficult for them to be physically close.Misha felt embarrassed and didn't know what to do. They both struggled to communicate about it, and despite their efforts to find help, they didn't get the answers they needed. They tried to ignore the problem, pretending it was okay, but eventually, things fell apart.Misha's story is not uncommon. Many people struggle with intimacy, but it's not something that's talked about openly. For Misha, it was a taboo subject, and she never felt comfortable discussing it with friends or family. As a naturopathic doctor with over 20 years of clinical experience, your host, Dr. Rishma Walji understands how important it is to have these conversations. She believes that it's essential to break the taboo around intimacy and increase awareness - not just physical awareness (understanding your body) but also system awareness (how to get the resources you need). By sharing Misha's story, Dr. Rishma hopes to encourage others to speak up and seek the help they need. Her cancer diagnosis necessitated her to come to terms with facing death and mortality. Rishma elaborates on how her cancer journey ran deeper than just the physical toll, preparation, or adjustment during and after treatments. She gave herself an opportunity to turn inward, connected to herself and did some soul-searching. She identifies with some prominent thoughts that played on her mind in the early stage of her journey and her positioning to get curious, leading up to her own conclusions about death and dying. Rishma shared, in addition to physical pain she endured, she tapped into a deeper meaning of her hair loss experience and feeling as though she had lost parts of her identity. She delves into details about the exhaustion she experienced; worry thoughts as she wondered what life might look like; what would happen if she didn't make it; time spent facing her truths; planning for potential outcomes and worrying about her children and husband. Today, she explains that she doesn't have constant thoughts about the cancer, though in full awareness acknowledges how it has completely changed her life as she lives each day to the fullest. Her key message to the listeners is that: don't be afraid to die that you don't allow yourself to live; indulge in life; and if you do fear death -- get curious as to what is getting in the way.

I don't want life to be ordinary. I want it to be extraordinary. The difference is just a little extra. How do you define living a little extra? In this episode we explore how live a life that we love. Finding joy, connecting deeply with my family, feeling energetic, following my dreams, making an difference and having fun. It comes down to lots of little choices, moments and insights related to personal growth and wellbeing. But how can you make those choices when you have no time and never ending responsibilities? This is the journey of this podcast, finding ways to live a life that we love, one with 'a little extra'. It's not enough to know what to do, it's not even enough to know how to do it. To really be deliberate in life, you need to understand how things work and then you need to become self-aware so that we can find a way to make it work, for you. That's the key. Knowing how things work and then figuring out how to make it work for you.In this podcast we talk about how things work in the body, the brain and in our emotions. Then we look at ways to make changes that will actually work for us, taking into account our lives, personalities, goals and challenges. For example: Telling me to stretch feels like a chore and it's less effective than helping me figure out how to want to stretch, and maybe even turn it into a habit. Telling me to be more patient with my kids honestly doesn't feel great. and isn't as useful as offering me a strategy that I can use when I'm feeling less than patient. Telling me to meditate because I'm stressed about being busy feels impossible, but understanding how meditation works allows me to incorporate other ways of finding peace and calm that could be a bridge to real meditative effects.Wanting or dreaming of a happy family is nice but what's more tangible is learning ways to help my brain store and recall happy moments more readily.Meet your host: Dr. Rishma Walji is a life strategies, emotion hacker, joy seeker and travel adventurer. She portrays that her personal grief journey is like that of peeling and unravelling of an onion, with each grief layer looking unalike, and therefore she embraces ‘grieving with gratitude'. She speaks about what it is like to grieve during the global pandemic, there were no traditional rites and rituals performed or known gatherings of family, friends, not being able to receive hugs from her heart connections, and how she had to run a completely different course than what was familiar to her. She takes time to open up her story to share aspects of the grief journey which she has not openly shared before and made some poignant connections with grief literacy. Rishma converses about the multi-roles that she played beyond being a wife and mother, she jumped into advocacy and detective hats to ensure that there was no compromise to her husband's wellbeing and quality of life. She has learned the importance of soft skills and connecting with empathy. Her key message to the listeners is that: lots of people go through this alone -- you don't have to; be sure to reach out to someone; “reach out to me”; find resources, there are many in the community; each person has their own story filled with their own pain and loss -- you are not alone.

Do you deeply understand your body and your physiology? Dr. Rishma Walji is a licensed and registered Naturopathic Doctor and Acupuncturist. She has an undergraduate degree from McGill University in physiology and a PhD in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Toronto. Rishma did two post-doctoral fellowships at McMaster University, one in health and aging and one in pregnancy and pediatrics. All that means is that she has a unique balance of scientific, evidence-based knowledge and natural, holistic healing experience. What Rishma has learned is that there are options. There are steps you can take, once you learn how things work. In this episode, we dive straight into what it means to be a Naturopathic Doctor. This type of Doctor will look at lifestyle changes, herbal medicines, vitamins, and nutrients. Also, they will try to put together the root cause of why a patient may be seeing issues. For example, if someone has a headache every day, you need to understand why you are getting that headache. Eventually, a Naturopathic Doctor will get to the root cause of your issues. Typically, Dr. Rishma will see women who are having issues with their period. Whenever a woman has these issues, it means their body is telling them something is not going well. It’s not normal for us to be having excessive symptoms. Western culture believes that our body is broken once a month; we start to think our period symptoms are just typical. Therefore, women don’t try and make their symptoms better. Dr. Rishma tells us that these symptoms are not normal, and we can do something about them! Later, Dr. Rishma reveals what every woman needs to know about hormones. Plus, we speak about the importance of understanding our bodies and how traumatic experiences will imprint on our psyche. In This Episode: About Dr. Rishma Walji and what Naturopathic Doctors do [ 2:25 ] What common symptoms Dr. Rishma will help women with [ 8:30 ] About the different pieces + seasons of our cycles [ 13:05 ] What we need to know about our hormones [ 19:00 ] How Dr. Rishma will measure a hormone imbalance [ 28:15 ] The inspiration behind Dr. Rishma’s career [ 34:00 ] The importance of understanding our bodies [ 38:25 ] How traumatic experiences will imprint on our psyches [ 47:50 ] Quotes: “Understanding your body is the most powerful way to address any issue.” “Your body is talking to you.” “We don’t learn how to understand our body symptoms.” “The cycle is just as important as your blood pressure and just as important as your heart rate.” “We have such a negative connotation to the cycle; I don’t want my daughters growing up thinking they are less than because they are women.” Links Mentioned: Dr. Rishma’s Website: https://rishmawalji.com Follow Dr. Rishma on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rishmawalji/ Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lea.pickard Follow me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lea.pickard
