An unlikely cycling revolution is happening in one of the coldest big cities on the planet: Edmonton, Alberta. Despite freezing temps, lots of sprawl, big trucks and an economy built on pulling oil out of the Albertan tar sands, the Western Canadian city is in the midst of a four-year, $100 million CAD investment in active transportation that will connect far-flung neighborhoods with a network of safe, high-quality, protected bike lanes. Many of these bike lanes will even get priority over roads for cars when it comes to snow removal. We traveled to the home of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers to attend the Winter Cycling Congress, where we talked with the people pushing for this transformation, including the city's former mayor, Don Iveson. Plus, hear our appearance on drive-time radio in the heart of oil country. *** Support The War on Cars on Patreon and receive access to ad-free versions of all our episodes, exclusive bonus content and stickers. *** This episode was sponsored by Bullmoose Soft Goods and Cleverhood. On this episode of The Construction Record Podcast™, digital media editor Warren Frey has two interviews from the BC Council of Forest Industries (COFI) 2024 annual conference in Vancouver. The first interview is with Don Iveson, the former mayor of Edmonton and current executive advisor on climate investing and community resilience for Co-Operators Insurance. Iveson is also the co-chair for the Task Force for Housing and Climate and he spoke to the important ways both the current affordable housing crisis and the present and future climate change emergency are linked together and can be mitigated in an integrated fashion. The second interview is with Abacus Data CEO David Coletto. In his address to COFI 21024 delegates he revealed public perception of the forestry industry has changed in a positive manner because of a continuing wildfire crisis. Most of those polled in B.C. understood the industry's role in mitigating wildfires when they occur and changing practices to manage forestry resources in a way that addresses ongoing risks, a big change from the public's views of the industry in previous decades. Welcome to the Cross Border Interviews With Ian McCormack What attributes make a good leader? Ian McCormack has had conversations with hundreds of mayors and thousands of councillors and other local leaders over the years. While each community and its leaders are unique, some common themes emerged among those appreciated as the most effective. Investigating these themes and drilling down into the key factors that enabled them to exist revealed several key attributes held in common by these strong leaders. In The DNA of Great Leaders, McCormack provides 25 key attributes of great leaders around three major thematic areas: personal characteristics, community leadership, and governing. Each chapter dissects a key attribute, contains examples and quotes from mayors who embody these attributes, and end with questions for reflection. “There is arguably a growing leadership deficit at all levels of public life, and yet in my experience local democracy remains the most reliable structure for selecting and then growing authentic leadership. And so Ian McCormack's book is timely as community leaders turned off by party politics and polarization turn to their county and town hall to try to make life better close to home. I agree with McCormack's recurring premise that ‘The politics of local government doesn't have to be zero sum,' and his book describes many of the attributes and skills necessary for mayors to steer councils, municipal organizations and communities on the non-zero-sum path. More communities led in this thoughtful way would add up to stronger communities, a stronger country, and a timely antidote to the politics of division we see around us.” Don Iveson, Edmonton Mayor 2013-2021, current Canadian Urban Leader at the University of Toronto School of Cities. *************************************************** Purchase " The DNA of Great Leaders": https://www.municipalworld.com/product/mccormack-the-dna-of-great-leaders/ *************************************************** Follow the Cross Border Interview Podcast: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/crossborderpodcast/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/CrossBorderPod Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/CrossBorderInterviews Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI2i25ZVKTO84oUsLyO4jig Website: https://www.crossborderinterviews.ca/ Back the Show: https://www.patreon.com/CrossBoderInterviewPodcast The Cross Border Interview Podcast was Produced and Edited by Miranda, Brown & Associates Inc © 2022

Bryce and Caroline are joined by librarians Carol Ma and Cassidy Munro to look at the top movies, books, music, and TV that helped kick-off the new millennium. The group also talks about the paranoia around Y2K, the controversial 2000 US Presidential election (hanging chad) and making some mixed CD's. Join us as we crack open another pop culture time capsule. Be sure to visit our list of all the top items from the year 2000 that we talk about in this episode.  On the next episode of Overdue Finds, we’ll be talking with EPL’s first Forward Thinking Speakers Series speaker of the year: Mayor Don Iveson. We’ll be asking him about his vision for the Edmonton of tomorrow and we might even be able to sneak in a few pop culture questions for him. Dan Corns is the Founder and CEO of Magnovate Technologies and he’s been in the media recently, urging Don Iveson and Edmonton City Council to pump the breaks on the current LRT expansion plans and reconsider a more efficient and cost-effective solution. Imagine travelling across town in 5 minutes, or jumping between Edmonton and Calgary city centres in under an hour, both completely plausible scenarios as Dan sees it.
