WELCOME TO THE MWSA PODCAST FOR WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9TH The devastation from the Jasper wildfire is still on the top of many minds, but, the latest discussion surrounding the massive fire is on who will bear the brunt of the recovery costs. We tackle the topic with Lorne Gunter, a Senior Political Columnist with the Edmonton Sun. Next. Hundreds of Calgarians have come together in a bid to overturn Calgary's blanket rezoning bylaw. We had the chance to get details on the movement from Rusty Miller, one of the applicants of the Court challenge, to hear why he's so passionate about the bylaw and how he believes the city should be addressing Calgary's housing crisis. And finally. After your “food coma” from Thanksgiving dinner, you know the “trick” to make you feel better? Any guesses? That's right, it's Pie! It's a favourite among almost everyone and no one knows more about the tasty treat than Nancy Goemans, co-owner of Calgary-based Pie Junkie. We catch up with Nancy to talk about our ‘love' of Pie and of course, sample some of the most popular flavours of the season!

An unlikely cycling revolution is happening in one of the coldest big cities on the planet: Edmonton, Alberta. Despite freezing temps, lots of sprawl, big trucks and an economy built on pulling oil out of the Albertan tar sands, the Western Canadian city is in the midst of a four-year, $100 million CAD investment in active transportation that will connect far-flung neighborhoods with a network of safe, high-quality, protected bike lanes. Many of these bike lanes will even get priority over roads for cars when it comes to snow removal. We traveled to the home of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers to attend the Winter Cycling Congress, where we talked with the people pushing for this transformation, including the city's former mayor, Don Iveson. Plus, hear our appearance on drive-time radio in the heart of oil country. *** Support The War on Cars on Patreon and receive access to ad-free versions of all our episodes, exclusive bonus content and stickers. *** This episode was sponsored by Bullmoose Soft Goods and Cleverhood. On Tuesday 28 year old Bezhani Sarvar is alleged to have entered Edmonton city call carrying a long gun and incendiary devices described as long guns. Sarvar, according to Edmonton police statement "once inside City Hall he lit several handheld incendiary devices, believed to be Molotov cocktails, that caused one small fire outside an elevator. He then fired several shots from a long gun into the ceiling, walls and windows." There is reported to be a video, writes Joe Warmington of the Toronto Sun, in a column which also appeared in the Edmonton Sun, in which Sarvar is believed to be heard citing "this genocide that's going on in Gaza and throughout the world." The voice on the video, includes "we will rise up against you guys, and we'll put you on trial." Rambles on about climate change, taxes and more. Joe Warmington wonders why this assault at Edmonton City Hall has received so little attention nationally. Joe's column is headlined: "This was a jihad-like terror attack in Canada that no one seems to know about." AND Joe added to his columns about goings-on in Alberta on Thursday with one headlined "Tucker Carlson drops bombs Alberta won't soon forget" as the former FOX News show host, appearing at an event with premier Danielle Smith, as well as other conservative figures in Canada and making remarks challenged as homophobic and far-right American. The premier is as well as targeted by federal Liberals and federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh for appearing with Tucker Carlson. Guest: Joe Warmington. Featured columnist Toronto Sun/Edmonton Sun. [12:35] Today, March 31st is #World Backup Day. This reminded this Gadget Guy of an article I was inspired to write for the Edmonton Sun 22 years ago not after watching the news or a show about Technology, but rather a TV Show about Women – specifically Bravo's Sex and the City. It's an update to the 2001 article with a humorous look at how I went about writing the article what transpired in Season 4 Episode 8 appropriately titled: My Motherboard, My Self, where Carrie Bradshaw - played by Sara Jessica Parker has her Mac PowerBook G3 laptops crashes and all the trials and tribulations around it including her questioning her relationship with her then boyfriend Aidan who interestingly is a PC user. The podcast also talks about backups and the importance of them as well a lessons Carrie learned about backups and relationships. So do your part, take a pledge and take action on #WORLDBACKUPDAY. You can also visit WorldBackupDay.com for more info. You can also read the updated article at Troy Media.

We’ve been watching this dance in slow motion for weeks now, with the Edmonton Oilers on the edge of it — both before and after their extended break during and after the NHL all-star game. It’s the great turtle derby being contested by half the Western Conference. One thing is for sure — at some point, a couple of these teams are going to break away from the pack. And the question in Edmonton is: Do the Oilers have the right team to do it? Host Craig Ellingson talks to Edmonton Journal and Edmonton Sun hockey beat writer Derek Van Diest about the great Western Conference Wild-card Turtle Derby of 2019 and what it’ll take for the Oilers to rise above it. And the danger for the Oilers all of this: Making a trade for help now that could sacrifice the future becoming all for naught.
The Edmonton Oilers are losing ground in the multi-team race for the wild-card playoff spots in the Western Conference as the NHL heads for the all-star break. A pair of weekend home losses — to the Calgary Flames and the Carolina Hurricanes — saw the Oilers slip a few points behind the pack while their rivals won games. Opportunities to get at the forefront of the wildcard race: Gone. Lost. Considering the Oilers changed coaches just two months ago, and considering they’ve won eight of their last 20 games, the focus is squarely on the makeup of the team an the man who put it together, general manger Peter Chiarelli. Mind you, GMs are always in the spotlight of Canadian NHL teams, but considering even his most-recent deals and moves — never mind the big ones from the past involving the likes of Taylor Hall, Griffin Reinhart and Milan Lucic — Oilers fans’ voices are reaching a fever pitch in calling for Chiarelli to be fired. Hockey beat writers Jim Matheson and Rob Tychkowski of the Edmonton Journal and the Edmonton Sun talk to host Craig Ellingson about the sputtering club.
Ken Hitchcock has had a good glimpse at what ails his new team, what works and what doesn’t early in his tenure behind the Edmonton Oilers bench. With other teams who had gone through a ‘rebuild’ phase at the same time as these Oilers finally realizing success — like the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Buffalo Sabres — is there anything Hitchcock, the third-winningest coach in NHL history, can do to jumpstart flailing Edmonton? Oil Spills podcast host Craig Ellingson talks to Oilers beat writer Rob Tychkowski of the Edmonton Journal and the Edmonton Sun about Hitchcock and the work the head coach done over the past week while on a three-game road trip to California. Are we watching a repeat of the sputtering Oilers show we’ve been watching now, 2016-17 aside, for more than a decade now. Is it too much for even Hitchcock to handle?
On the latest of the podcast, Edmonton Eskimos beat writer for the Edmonton Sun Gerry Moddejonge joined me on the podcast to break down the Labour Day rematch and what's up next on the Eskimos schedule! Follow Gerry on Twitter: @gerrymoddejonge
The gang’s almost all here! Edmonton Oilers prospects have reported to rookie camp ahead of the opening of main camp later this week. It features the likes of Evan Bouchard, the Oilers’ first-round draft pick this past June, as well as other hopefuls who have an opportunity to make an impact and get a longer look as the team readies for the season. Tyler Benson, the Oilers’ second-round pick two years ago, is playing in his first pre-season games after missing action the past couple of Septembers because of various ailments. And can Kailer Yamamoto, the team’s top pick in 2017 who stuck with the NHL squad as the regular season began before being sent back to junior, earn a spot again this year? Podcast host Craig Ellingson talks to Edmonton Journal and Edmonton Sun hockey writers Rob Tychkowski and Derek Van Diest about the opening of camp and what we’ll be looking to see from prospects and veterans alike as players report and train for the upcoming 2018-19 NHL campaign. Can Connor McDavid take his offensive game up a notch? How will new backup goalie Mikko Koskinen look? And what if Darnell Nurse misses the start of camp because he doesn’t have a contract? They also touch on the recent Montreal Canadiens-Vegas Golden Knights trade that saw Habs capta
With Andrej Sekera lost for a few months after tearing his Achilles tendon this summer, the Edmonton Oilershave signed free-agent defenceman Jakub Jerabek to fill his spot — at least at training camp, where the NHL team will see ho stands out and deserves that sixth spot on the blue line. Prospects Ethan Bear, Caleb Jones and the oilers’ most-recent first-round pick, Evan Bouchard, will also likely be in the mix. Is adding Jerabek the right move? Podcast host Craig Ellingson talks to Edmonton Journal and Edmonton Sun hockey writers Rob Tychkowski and Derek Van Diest about the Oilers’ signing of Jerabek; about the team bringing in free-agent forward Scottie Upshall on a professional tryout; about when we might see the Oilers and Darnell Nurse come to terms on a new contract; and on the likely eventual unveiling of the team’s new alternate jersey. Of course they’re going to bring back the blue one, right?
